Jim, turn off the cap lock. In texting terms you are shouting when you capitalize. I’ve had my Total Gym for a couple of years and can’t say enough good things about it. This UA-cam channel has really helped me as well.

I had a weider and the power bands really help for resistance. If you need more resistance get a adjustable stepper (the kind people use during aerobics classes) and put it under the front of the Weider. It will seriously increase the resistance and help to build muscle.

Great videos, I watch them regularly. I'll use these ideas for my own workout routines! Its good to get back to the basics and these 8 exercises fit the bill. Would love to see a follow-up video to the muscles one where you explain what muscle groups are worked for different exercises. In particular, I'd be curious to know about the different positions and angles for the same exercise (such as bicep curls: seated, kneeling, lying, facing backwards, etc.) The Total Gym lets you do many exercises in several different positions angles. Are there any differences in the way muscles are worked based on the position or angle? Or are they all more or less the same and just a matter of personal preference/comfort, etc. Thanks!
Thank you for watching. I did link the video I did about what muscles are being worked in the description box. In the future I could do a more detailed one like you described, but I wouldn't worry too much about the specifics about certain angles. More important is just finding an exercise/angle that you "feel" more that particular day. I would say it is about a certain level of personal preference.
I don't own the total gym yet, but I'm definitely looking into it. But I have quite a bit in the army and after a little. One of my favorite things is negatives to build strength or work through plateaus. I just noticed it on a few movements is easy to help yourself up with your legs and just do a few negative reps. Thanks again for information
No problem, thanks for watching. Haven't heard anyone tell me they regret buying a Total Gym. You get what you put into it. Hope you consider getting one soon.
@@chrisrgutierrez I've been rationalizing not buying it. I looked on Craigslist and there are some not far with attachments for 200. Maybe early Xmas for me and the teenager.
Thank you...love (and do) all of these on a Total Trainer DLX, just another (and a good bit cheaper) than Chuck's version. There's a few more I would love to tell you about that I use alot and used when I trained as a personal trainer. One is the lying cable shoulder press. Lie down, head towards the bottom, like you are going to do the cable curls that you showed in this video (that, by the way, is THE best bicep exercise on this planet!). There is no pressure on the spine or body, everything isolates right into the biceps. It's superior to dumbbell curls. Anyway, take the cables from here and bring them into a shoulder press. It mimics the dumbbell shoulder press as you have to use stabilizers, unlike when you do the bar shoulder presses (that you show in this video). I like doing the bar shoulder presses, but it's just stuck in that one plane of motion. Doing them with cables is like an enhanced version of using dumbbells. And like with the curls, the spine is out of the equation with no pressure on the neck/back whatsoever. All the stress goes right into the shoulders. If you've never done them, try and let me know what you think. DC in Dallas, Georgia.
Thanks for this great comment and sorry I missed it awhile back. I have tried that shoulder exercise, but not as often just because (at least on a TG) I need more length in cables. I've done it with chains and when I have my extra clips/swivel in. But yes, that's a great exercise I don't do enough.
@@hybridresistance Yeah, I'm 5''10" and it is about right on mine. Mine is a Total Trainer (Bayou Fitness) not sure you've heard of that? Got it a long time ago just because it was only $300 or so, compared to alot more for Chuck's version...lol.
@@justinw1765 Believe it or not, I actually do a 2 or 3 second hold at the top! Chin ups are great on these things because you can't start "swinging" your torso to help out...lol. I also like to do a cable pull down move, with the your palms facing your body (neutral grip). It hits the back and biceps both. If your pretty strong, you'll need to add weight to make this one effective to hit your big back muscles. But I have two big ol 50 lb small bore dp plates that I've had since I was a kid. I throw them on there and you can wear your lats and bis out with this move! Give it try and let me know how it works for you.
I just did what seemed natural and it was basically 4 of the 7 you mentioned. I have a really one looks like from 1990s. I think this is perfect for me. I was a runner/ hiker who didn't really work out besides pt and yoga strengths for back. But I got Into to a car accident a few months ago and am now recovered and this is perfect the only stress I put on back and elbow is what I choose. With free weights I could get myself re injured halfway through a movement before noticing.
I find doing lying close grip cable dips to be a superior exercise (for me) for triceps development as the exercise also works the chest and anterior delts. The secret is to focus on working the triceps white lifting and lowering the cables in a controlled manner, pausing for an instant at both top and bottom of the exercise.
I do 50 of each of these, even if some take some time and a lot of profanity. Sometimes its 2 o r 3 at a time towards the end just to get it done. The first couple weeks of starting are the worst, and when you want to stop. Just don't. It gets better, and becomes a fun routine to do while watching stuff. Well, it still sucks working out, but it does get better.
Great video! Do you have a follow up on number of reps, sets, recommendations on importance of each set going to exhaustion... that sort of thing? thanks again

I've always wanted one too. Im an over 60 female who has had alot of physical injuries...won't bore you with all that, but there have been many. However, I was quite athletic in my younger days and I really enjoy 🏊♂️ swimming and being active. I just bought a well used one, which is fine by me, because it just tells me it was well 😍 ❤️ loved. My friend is going to help mevset it up and I honestly cant wait to get started. I hope I can get into some kind of routine and strengthen the muscles which have been injured. I've also lost slowly around 100 lbs. I gained after being injured. I can move alot better now and look and feel alot better now. I just want to get muscle tone back. .Can you suggest exercises that are great for the abs, back, and legs. Anything you can do for inner thighs? Just curious. Thanks much!
I always recommend going off of "feeling" on reps. By that I mean choose a rep range that allows you get a decent amount of work per set, but not really to failure. Naturally as you progress or get stronger you'll be able do more reps / sets. But usually I'd say for most people it's somewhere between 10-20 reps. Personally, I never once counted reps on any set unless it was for a video/workout.
Have you tried laying on your chest with your head facing down and working your hams with one foot hooked in the strap? I find leg day is more fun using the straps in different positions.
I've do have the two feet strapped in, but never tried one strap connected to both feet if that's what you mean. I just featured in my newest "new exercise" video a seated facing tower/ or face up hamstring curl strapped in that feels really good as well.
I bought a used Total Gym 1700 last summer, then lost it and everything else except my pajamas and dog in a house fire. So my budget while I recover from that is razor thin. I can get an OG Total Gym in good condition for $25, which is in my price range. Can all these exercises be done in this particular Total Gym?
By and large yes, that is if you have some of the necessary attachments. But any TG is better than no Total Gym. Sorry to hear about that loss my friend.
I’m curious 🤨 I am leaning toward buying the Gr8flex because the price and attachments included but as a girl with long hair that pulley exposed uo top makes me nervous
Sorry for late replay(thought I replied to this, but apparently not). Both the Total Gym and GF run that risk of the hair getting caught if that helps at all.
Do you have any problems with the squat stand squeaking? My gym is only like a month old and just squeaks so bad that it’s super distracting and makes me not want to do squat exercises cause I can’t focus.
On average I'd say 10-20 reps for 3 sets. I'd also recommend you check out my "programs" playlist where I go into more details on this for various workout splits.
Thank Thank you so much, we just started following these routines with my hubby and we are happy to do our workouts at home! Would you make more burn calories videos on circuit ? Thanks
Roughly about 3 sets for 10-20 reps. I've made a "programs" playlist that goes into this in more detail for following a program if you're interested as well.
Could just be that your still driving force / tension through your neck. A lot of muscles still have to work together to produce this exercise. I would experiment with wider grips, making sure you're pressing through your ears, lower the incline / speed.
Hello just purchased a glide board and want to thank you for the excellent videos. You're filling a void for sure. In the past always focused on chest ignoring back...big mistake. Trying to build upper lats. Seems like the face-up pullovers are good especially one arm at a time focusing on the first quarter of the movement. I find it difficult to engage the lats unfortunately.
@@hybridresistance Hey ... tried pullups on the Gr8flex gripping at the built-in oval. Used heavy resistance band looping in a figure 8 around my waist and leg stand. Not sore at first but it slowly developed over a few days all over back especially between shoulder blades. Typically, don't feel my back in pullups probably use arms and shoulders or some other muscles but the Gr8flex seems to provide more back isolation. Also, super-setted with one-leg squats with resistance bands while the pulley was disconnected really got heart rate up. Good exercise combo. Tried "iron cross" afterward and that felt pretty good too. Thanks for all the tips hope you're well.
Thank you so much for this video as well as your others, very helpful and informative. If I could ask your opinion, do you think the Total Gym Fit and/or the Gr8flex would be okay for someone 6’5? It looks like I may not be able to get full extension on bench press and maybe some other exercises. Also, I’m guessing full incline would be good for building muscle even for someone used to working with dumbbells (looking for something easier on the joints, etc)? Thanks again!
I get this question a lot and actually made a video on it (link in this comment) regarding these machines and being taller. In some ways it's really a personal preference, I've had people who are 6'4 and say that the machines work fine, but again everyone is built differently. I'd say the GF and FIT are so similar with dimensions that it's not much difference, but the cables are a little longer on GF so it does make make the bench press less likely to bottom out. I also check out my video on the swivel attachment. That with a couple carabiner clips will also aid in lengthening the machine out for you. ua-cam.com/video/emfpvtHhbLM/v-deo.html
Hi there I love your channel I have an older total gym but im trying to save for a better one what suggestions do you have for a diabetic that's really trying to get there stomach shredded as far as ab routines specifically or how would you approach a full body workout or a split ??? Love to know your opinion keep putting out awesome content love your channel!!
Thanks for watching. I do have various program splits if you're interested under my "programs" playlist that you would be interested in as well as a "core" playlist as well. I think the best way for visible abdominals is diet and training them as you would any body part. Basically you can't spot reduce the area, but you can spot enhance. The Total Gym does have some decent abdominal exercises, but I personally don't do too much of them.
I have the Total Gym XLS. It slides to much doesn't stay in place. I have tile floors in this room.I have a mat I got from Wal-Mart. Maybe that's the issue or I'm doing my work out wrong. I can't find the mats on the Total Gym Vidoes. Maybe I should just get some carpet.
You could check out these stall mats amzn.to/3fPzTcQ you can also find them at Farm and Fleet type stores and possibly larger hardware stores. They shouldn't move too much on this surface. I don't think you're doing anything wrong, probably just the tile floor. Carpet would also work, although I've had people tell me it slides on carpet. I think it just depends on the type of carpet.
Thanks for the great video! I am getting back into my TotalGym. This real helps to simplify things. What would you think about throwing the crunch attachment into the routine? How many sets do you normally do? Thanks for all the great information!
Yes, the way you sit can be another modifier for increasing / decreasing tension. I sometimes will sit with my feet on the ground, but it just depends how much you're using the ground to assist you with the movement.
No problem at all. Thank you for watching. Check out my "beginners' playlist if you want to see other videos I think are helpful in getting started with the machine.
All solid exercises, I don't claim any machine, mode, or exercise is superior for all people. Problem with those is that for many people (obese, back issues, shoulder issues, etc) they would be a struggle. Just had an ex wrestler start using this and told me this is the only way he can do a pull up
Learned a lot by watching your videos; chains, weight bar for stability & the Large Squat Stand (a leg press, not a squat). I do have an issue with using the Wing attachment for pull-ups & shoulder presses. I felt a lower back pain because the handles were not in line with my body (similar to arching your back using free weights). My solution; the Tri-Grip Shaper Bar. The pain is gone.
So basically you just are using your body weight as resistance?? I’m trying to understand exactly how these machines work. Any information would be appreciated
Essentially yes, but it doesn't do it justice to compare it to pure body weight training. The various exercises and intensities you can work at based on the incline really do feel comparable (if not better IMO) to free weights.
Re watched this and feel I'm back to a routine, I lost the plot with so many TG videos showing this and that my head was wrecked and I came to a grinding halt, thanks for getting this old bird back on track 🥴
Interestingly this staple group of exercises came naturally to me probably because of my background when I used to go heavy with free weights. But I started doing these even before I found your channel early on.

Well, it still sucks working out, but it does get better.
That's intense, love to hear it
Great video! Do you have a follow up on number of reps, sets, recommendations on importance of each set going to exhaustion... that sort of thing? thanks again
Thank you. here's a video where I go into a summary of how I like to use these machines. ua-cam.com/video/PVIopw8Hpzc/v-deo.html
@@hybridresistance Thanks!
This is very useful. Thanks!!
Great stuff, as always. I do almost every exercise you post, and totally appreciate it. Seeing some changes to my 58 year old body. Off topic tho...where did you get the circle of stars t-shirt? Really like it. Also...are you a soldier, or a marine? Best regards....keep sharing please.
I actually got it for free from my supplement order. The company I get my stuff from is always giving away free shirts and they fit great. I recommend a lot of their products and am affiliated with them if you by chance what to check out the link. They have a sale right now until the end of the day for 15% off and you get a free shirt (which I just took adavantage of) www.tigerfitness.com/?a_aid=600863522a755 But no, I was not in the service, however I do support them! Thank you for watching.
@@hybridresistance Hey...thanks for response..I also support the military, with fundraising for local veterans needs and other things. Thought you served, for some reason. Anyway, I looked into TF supplements, and it looks like good stuff. Might order something at some point. I also found the t-,shirt seperatly, but they're sold out of XL. I will keep checking back. I have referred many Total gym users to your channel. Anyone with a TG would get a ton of great tips, from watching your workout ideas. Thanks again for sharing. Please kepp em coming. 😊
I agree to all comments. Really simplified workout routine. . Need to know reps.
Here's a video on that ua-cam.com/video/CjQGr4W1M7w/v-deo.html
Excellent video!!
Thank you very much!
Hi, after watching your video I bought an old Total Gym XLi in mint condition. I really like mixing this with my other training.
Great to hear!
~Thank you SO much for showing this. I have my uncle (RIP) Jimmy's Total Gym 14000....simply love it.
No problem at all. A Total Gym with sentimental value is always the best model!
RIP uncle Jimmy. He sounds like he was a great guy
@@olatutuakinyelure9680 ~Thank you. Yes indeed...my uncle Jimmy was an awesome man of God & family.
I've had my total gym 1500 foryears. I love it. I am a big girl but I'm strong. Lotta muscle in upper body.
Awesome to hear.
Love the simplicity of this workout I’m a beginner
How many reps? and 2-3 sets?
I'd reccomend going off of feeling, but on average about 10-15 reps for 2-4 sets.
I have the Total Gym X-Force model with the 12 incline levels. Are there any beginner inlines you would suggest for these sets at 185 lbs?
Sorry, I'm not sure what you're asking?
Thanks a lot. Do you have any videos for PPL routines?
Here you go, I also have more programs in my "programs" playlist. ua-cam.com/video/FVAtaZkfQQ4/v-deo.html
Could you post a total gym workout video for tricep rope exercises? Thanks for the videos!
Yes, will do! Thanks for that recommendation, that's helps me out.
Exceptional information thank you🎉
Great advice!
Thanks for watching.
Do you have recommendations on where to start as far as reps and then how to build on that?
Thanks, you have helped me so much. Thanks again.
No problem at all. Thanks for watching.
I do a lot of single arm biceps triceps and squats I got a bad knee
Good video, seems like this machine is worth it!
For sure worth it, but I know I'm a little biased. IMO nothing for the home gym comes close.
I agree best exercises you can do.
Do you have any problems with the squat stand squeaking? My gym is only like a month old and just squeaks so bad that it’s super distracting and makes me not want to do squat exercises cause I can’t focus.
I haven't had that, but I would just give them a call and or find the source to WD-40 it.
Great video
awesome video. Thanks very much!
Thanks for watching.
How many sets and reps would you recommend for each exercise?
On average I'd say 10-20 reps for 3 sets. I'd also recommend you check out my "programs" playlist where I go into more details on this for various workout splits.
Needed this thanks👍
No problem. Thanks for watching
Thank Thank you so much, we just started following these routines with my hubby and we are happy to do our workouts at home! Would you make more burn calories videos on circuit ? Thanks
Thank you for watching. Yes, I can look into making a video like that in the future.
How much time would you put into each exercise?
Roughly about 3 sets for 10-20 reps. I've made a "programs" playlist that goes into this in more detail for following a program if you're interested as well.
How set should i do?
Why does inverted shoulder press hurt my neck, I keep my head neutral
Could just be that your still driving force / tension through your neck. A lot of muscles still have to work together to produce this exercise. I would experiment with wider grips, making sure you're pressing through your ears, lower the incline / speed.
@@hybridresistance thank you I’ll try that
I noticed that with the Total Gym my shoulders give out before my chest when doing the chest press. Any tips to get around that?
I'd check out this video I made if you haven't yet as it addresses that concern ua-cam.com/video/W63zPz1vD3c/v-deo.html
How do your lats feel with the regular pull ups on the machine? To me that's where I feel it the most, but pull overs as well are a close second.
I would say yes. It uses body weight 4 resistance. Do more reps if it's too easy
How do you add the bands to the Total Gym?
Here is a video where I go over that. ua-cam.com/video/tpS3qBXhzAU/v-deo.html
Like this video. Very helpful.
I'm 6'5" and 130kg, which Total Gym of the different models would you suggest?
I'll actually be releasing a "buyers guide" video tomorrow but I'd say either the FIT or XLS.
Thanks for the great video! I am getting back into my TotalGym. This real helps to simplify things. What would you think about throwing the crunch attachment into the routine? How many sets do you normally do? Thanks for all the great information!
Thank you for that. I personally don't do a lot of crunch related exercises to say it's in the essential list. For sets, I'd say somewhere around 2-4.
Total gym- the best thing ever!
Do these exercises work if you keep your feet on the ground?
Yes, the way you sit can be another modifier for increasing / decreasing tension. I sometimes will sit with my feet on the ground, but it just depends how much you're using the ground to assist you with the movement.
4 can be done lying stomach down on the platorm. Its like swimming.
Is every GR8flex part interchangeable with the total gym fit?
I'm not sure about every model, but at least for the Total Gym Fit and probably the GTS, everything does work together.
I’m a super newbie. Love this video man. Thanks a lot for posting!
No problem at all. Thank you for watching. Check out my "beginners' playlist if you want to see other videos I think are helpful in getting started with the machine.
1.) Weighted Pull-Ups/Chin-Ups
2.) Weighted Push-Ups/Decline Push-Ups
3.) Dips
4.) Hyperextensions
5.) Weighted Leg-Raise / Sit-Ups
6.) Weighted Squats
All solid exercises, I don't claim any machine, mode, or exercise is superior for all people. Problem with those is that for many people (obese, back issues, shoulder issues, etc) they would be a struggle. Just had an ex wrestler start using this and told me this is the only way he can do a pull up
Getting my gym today ! Thanks for motivating me to buy it !
Awesome to hear Allen. Let me know how you like it!
How many sets or reps do you do per exercise?
Give or take about 3-5 sets for 10-20 reps.
Thanks for that comment Keith and thank you for the positive comments.
What porcentage of body weight will I be lifting with this machine?
Great question. Stay tuned tomorrow and I will release a video on this.
Thank you for your info I found a pro form total body on clearance from bjs for 80 dollars
Awesome. Great deal and great machine.
Re watched this and feel I'm back to a routine, I lost the plot with so many TG videos showing this and that my head was wrecked and I came to a grinding halt, thanks for getting this old bird back on track 🥴
Great to hear that this helped you. Thanks for the comments.
I disagree with the chest press as the only way I feel anything in the chest at all is if I have the cables over the forearms instead of under
Add flys , iron crosses and ab crunches and you have it right .
Great tips
Which exercise is for your stomach?
I am in a wheelchair my leg muscles are very weak can use this.
To build muscles you have to go slowly, forward and backward. Tension is what builds muscle.
You can build "tension" and unique stress to muscle at a variety of rep speeds. There has been many studies on this showing varying results.
How many reps do you recommend
I made video on this (link below) otherwise on average 10-15.
ua-cam.com/video/CjQGr4W1M7w/v-deo.html
Does the machine run small for a 6'2" human ? 🤔
I can't say for sure as it may depend on your personal preference, but I did make a video on this here ua-cam.com/video/emfpvtHhbLM/v-deo.html
What model is the camo total gym?
That's the GR8FLEX machine he's working out on. He made a previous unboxing video about this piece of equipment. ;)
Nice
1. Chest Press
2. Pull Up
3. Inverted Press
4. Pullover
5. Row
6. Bicep Curls
7. Tricep Curls
8. Squat
On your pull-up, I don’t think you should fully extend your arms? 😎
Interestingly this staple group of exercises came naturally to me probably because of my background when I used to go heavy with free weights. But I started doing these even before I found your channel early on.
Awesome Terry. I do feel these exercises are pretty intuitive.
@@hybridresistance Yes but very smart of you to provide them for folks unfamiliar with resistance training.
100% agree
How many reps & sets?
Here's a video on that but basically about 10-15 reps for about 2-4 sets in my opinion. ua-cam.com/video/CjQGr4W1M7w/v-deo.html
More leg stuff. Side leg pulls, abduct /adduct
