i'm growing up and that scares the hell out of me

a list of the BEST coming-of-age movies aka one of my favorite movie genres! give me angsty teens, awkward first romances and school settings 🎒 movies about teenagers will always have a special place in my heart because i'm such a nostalgic person, so it's very easy for me to relate to them and think about my time in high school, etc.
there's been SUCH great teen comedies/dramas in the past century, i think the genre is getting better each year. let me know in the comments any movies that you think i missed on this list!

Got home from work and couldn't wait to watch your video. Loved your list! My recommendations would be:
1) The Perks of Being a Wallflower
(watch/read this even if you don't see the rest. I absolutely love it)
2) A Silent Voice/The Shape of a Voice
(it's an anime film, but you love Spirited Away as much as I do, so you should be good with one anime on the list lol)
3) Ms. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
(lovely message and a fun story)
4) Little Boy
(beautifully shot and the acting is 👌)
My next recommendation would've been Pan's Labyrinth but I'm glad you mentioned it 😊
Thirteen is a incredible movie!
@@bimbo6345 I love "The Perks of being a wallflower" so much 😍
Lady Bird and Eight Grade are big ones for me too. Edge of Seventeen as well!
Also love Speak, really "spoke" spoke to me lol, especially if you were quiet and introverted in high school, and beyond.
Sing Street!
The Graduate
Bandslam
ET
and
Boyhood, which is basically my life, I was literally sitting in the theater when it came out like tripping out, cause there is some beat for beat stuff happening.
Hi I love your videos but i don't speak English :( would you consider to put Spanish subtitles? 🥺
_”Were all in a coming of age movie”_
ik that when you’ll make one of the best coming-of-age movies. i believe in you.
🤩🤩 THANK YOU!
Love, Rosie, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Dead Poets Society, 10 Things I Hate About You, Easy A, American Graffiti, The Blind Side.
love rosie 🥰🥰
I'll forever love Dead Poets Society
10 things i hate about you I LOVE IT
i would kill to watch dead poets society again for the first time
I’ve never watched a ‘coming of age’ movie and truly enjoyed it. I mean, I like to watch them, but for some reason they scare me. I’m 17 about to turn 18 and seeing people my age living their life so, not dangerously, but freely or something along those lines I can’t find the right word for it, makes me feel inadequate. I’m an introverted person and, like you said in your last video, scared of growing up. I still feel I haven’t “grown up” even though I’m an adult. Does that make sense? Idk why I went on this rant, but if anyone else feels this way, you are so not alone!
Anyways, lovely video as always and I’ll def watch some of these.
P.s. so glad to hear you dad’s doing well💜
I understand what you mean perfectly. I recommend watching Eighth Grade if you haven’t yet. It’s the most real portrayal of a middle schooler/teen i’ve seen. Don’t worry about being introverted, embrace it! It’s totally okay. Once you graduate and get out of the high school cycle you’ll see that you will ‘grow up’ in a sense because you’ll have new responsibilites. I was still very shy/quiet/immature when I was 18 and didn’t really start growing up and being a functional adult until I was 20 and moved to the US by myself. Different situations in your life will make you ‘grow up’ so don’t worry about it for now! Thank you so much for watching and commenting and i hope this made sense lol 💜💜
A little bit of Monika thank you so much for you comment! Also, yes, it does make sense😁💜
Miss Ravenclaw I totally understand what you’re saying! I never ~get~ coming of age movies
God. You perfectly described what I've been feeling all day. I'm 17 going on 18 and it's crazy. I still am a kid and haven't grown in the same ways I see these movies and peers grow. I am mature, but not of age?
people have these misconception that you should grow up but you honestly don't for a really long time. yes, your grow but i don't think anyone is really a grown up until their 30s
The way way back, perks of being a wall flower and boyhood are my favorites
Mine too.
I still love them
@Laura nah boyhood is fucking boring
same!
In "The Edge Of Seventeen" i liked the relationship she had with her teacher (psychologist, friend). I think this part was brilliant.
coming of age movies are my favorite as well, along with my favorite books. since i’m a teenager it’s nice seeing myself represented and feeling like i’m not alone in what i’ve gone through. i mean ofc they’re fictional characters but it’s unlikely that no one else identified with these characters too so it’s a great reminder.
yeah i love coming of age, young adult books too! that’s one of my favorite things about them as well, seeing myself in these characters (such as Kayla from Eighth Grade). Thanks for watching 💜
A little bit of Monika you’re welcome💜
Hi! ^^ As for books, could you recommend some please?
Gina wonder by rj palacio; loser by jerry spinelli; 11 birthdays by wendy mass; wikipedia by chris van etten (this is more horror but there’s a teen in it, so yeah)
also sorry if most of these are around middle school or early high school reading level, haven’t read those kinds of books in a while.
Lady Bird is such a complex storyline depicting real archetypes, experiences, love stories, and and female experience with sexuality. I connect with everything within the movie in some way.
Why are people overrating lady bird that movie was so boring and plain
@@rosekillah683 you prolly couldnt relate to the movie
i highly recommend the netflix show anne with an e , its a great coming of age show set in the late 19th century and the cinematography and the plot and the characters were all so perfect. that show really stood out amongst almost, if not every film i ever watched.
I loved Ladybird as well. I thought that Greta Gerwig did an amazing job showing how from a young woman's perspective, Christine's mother's words may resonate differently. She might perceive her mother as unjust, mean and insensitive, but in reality her mother was actually quite reasonable and was just being a good parent. I think that a lot of young people (myself included) are guilty of distorting adult's words and being unreasonable. Of course, in a similar manner to LadyBird, we should challenge our parents' parenting but always keeping in mind our family's circumstances and thinking of the bigger picture as we do so.
the perks of being a wallflower is my favorite coming of age movie and movie just in general. It shows the struggles of a teen who has been abused and has mental health problems. I can relate to the main character a lot.
You can think that I`m crazy, but for me Peter Pan (2003) is a coming of age movies... One of the most common fears for a teenager is to grow up and accept you`ll be an adult; the adventures of Wendy in Neverland are her last ones before she grew up and is a journy to understand and accept why she has to... I know this sounds weird, sorry :p
Just found your channel! As someone who loves your whole aesthetic and watching/making films, I'm so going to binge the rest of your videos!
Ahhh TYSM! 💜
I’m surprised no one has mentioned mid90s, loved that movie
same
what’s it about? :)

Coming of age movies are my favourite because I'm 18 and I have little to no freedom at all. I have three brothers one older and one younger and my parents treat us all like kids and I have the most freedom but it's so restricted and I've never been to a sleepover and I've only been out with my friends alone like a few times, I have my license and I can't drive to go places for myself and when I do get to drive, it's with my dad for 30 minutes maximum and it's 'practice' and looking at these coming of age movies and seeing these people living their best lives is the best thing ever
I feel like the difference between booksmart and most other coming of age movies is that booksmart delves into other characters and subverts the stereotypes that we so often see in high school movies and gives those characters personalities
Dazed and confused, me and earl and the dying girl, and the graduate are some of my favorite coming of age films.
i haven't watched the others but i LOVE dazed and confused OMG. its SOOOO underrated
Jahnavi Raman me and my cousin quote D and C all the time we love it. I love the graduate and me and earl and the dying so much because I related a lot to the main characters.
@@ilikeemerica9619 that's really cool. tbh i don't remember the intricate dialogues of D and C bc its been a while since i watched it but its still a great movie
gotta love john hughes movies. the breakfast club, sixteen candles, pretty in pink, ferris bueller's day off, weird science and etc. his movies are far better what i generally see nowadays. I know a lot of his movies are old but it is timeless and such a classic. my opinion. nowadays, a lot of coming of age movies are just a bit cliché. xx
Great recommendations! Let's don't forget that SPIRITED AWAY is also a coming-of-age movie. One of my all time favorites :)
You are SO right 😭
ahhh! this list is full of so many amazing films! coming-of-age is one of my favorite genres as well and i think that is definitely related to being such a nostalgic/sentimental person. i love all of these so much, save for booksmart which i haven't seen yet but am excited to watch! some of my personal favorites are electrick children, the virgin suicides, the perks of being a wallflower, rushmore, and stand by me (among many others)! i also feel like frances ha fits into this genre even though she's not a teenager. a friend once said to me that frances ha and ladybird feel like sister films, and that's exactly how i feel about them too!
You should definitely watch Mid90s, it’s on Amazon right now
For me the best coming of age movies are
Call me by your name
The Edge of Seventeen
10 things I hate about you
Your list is amazing! Some I have watched but some don't so def added them to my list! If I have to add others, it would be Ghibli's: Whisper of The Heart, Kiki's Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, and Ocean Waves (kinda romance)~ just mentioning Ghibli and have a little flashback to each one of the stories makes me smile... that's how special they are :")
istg id love to be able to even just witness how one of these movies are made. Like physically be there and see the process. I'd love to be a filmmaker but I'm not sure if that's going to happen
OMG IM SO GLAD YOU MENTIONED JUNO I LOVE IT SO MUCH
submarine (2010) has always been my favourite coming-of-age movie ✨
submarine is my favorite movie ever, it makes me so happy when i meet other people who love it as well

I just found your channel and I just want to say that your videos are so beautiful and you seem so sweet. I can relate so much to a lot of things you've posted, from being and introvert to being in a long distance relationship. Also love your movie related content and that you talk about fim school, I've been thinking about switching from fashion to film school and it's nice to hear about it. :)
Love this! And would love to be in a coming of age story you direct one day - go get it girl!

I love this list so much!! 🤩
Usually when I look for them I only ever find lists with white mcs love that you addressed that too 💪🏼
Another one I really like is Dope
All of these movies made me cry at one point or another. Coming of age movies, particularly ones with family issues always feel like a serious gut punch.
the way i have already watched all of these and absolutely love them!!!
I wanted to say that your scenario is very cute! I love the Studio Ghibli movies and I loved the decorations! I really like your videos, they are very well done! Congratulations on your work, I can see that you are very dedicated to it :)
And Lady Bird is one of my favorite movie! I identify with her a lot!
I've seen all of the movies except the first one loved them all so I'm really looking forward to checking it out I've been looking for a good coming of age movie to watch.
booksmart is my favorite movie ever. And as a bi 15 year old girl Amy was so relatable for me and I loved how they portrayed her. I think I've seen this movie like 4 times already
I just found your channel - and i love it so much!
Pan’s Labyrinth was SO GOOD
'Boyhood' is an amazing coming of age film, one of my absolute favourites
The Edge of Seventeen is my 4th favourite movie ever!!! Glad you like it!
yes i love it!
I want her to be my therapist 😢
The Spectacular Now is also one worth watching.
I can't wait to watch the coming of age film you'll direct! 🎬✨
I love Whip It, which is about a young girl ( played by Elliott Page before he transitioned) growing up in Texas. Her mum is a former beauty pageant contestant/winner, and she wants her daughter to follow in her footsteps. Daughter wants to go to college out of state and gets into roller derby by accident. There’s a great relationship with her best friend ( played by Ali Shawkat), her relationship with her dad is sweet too. Drew Barrymore directed it and has a small part in it. The soundtrack is fabulous, the roller derby scenes and the names they choose are funny, and it’s just charming and lovely!
You remind me of having a cool room in a hot summer day.
Excellent selections. Other movies that made my list are:
- Spirited Away
- Moonrise Kingdom
- Brooklyn
- Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
- The Florida Project
- To All The Boys I've Loved Before
- Little Women (2019)
:)
Can you do a very detailed review on what you think makes a movie good, why aesthetics, cinematography matter etc
My faves are sing street, submarine and juno !
Thanks for the recommendations! I love coming of age movies, and I had no idea Bo Burnham and Olivia Wilde were directors now. I really like their work as comedian/actress, so I'll look for where to rent these movies asap!
yeah it surprised me but in a good way!! they're really both great movies
Great recommendations of coming of age movies. Love you honey 💕
yay thank youuu💜
Please can you do a room tour?? It's beautiful!!
Even though it's kind of old I still feel Rebel Without a Cause is an important and amazing coming of age movie. also I just feel it's a must watch since it's a classic James Dean movie
REEEE I HAVE ONE BUT I DONT KNOW IF ITS REALLY A COMING OF AGE MOVIE OR NOT BUT I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH OCEAN WAVES BECAUSE I THINK ITS AMAZING!!! (Its a bit “boring” but I think that’s part of the Beauty of it)
Almost Famous and The Diary of a Teenage Girl changed my life
My favourites - Lady Bird, Booksmart and The Edge of Seventeen
Can’t wait to watch your movie 💕✨
in my opinion, the perks of being a wallflower is the best coming of age movie
Boyhood is one of my favorites!
I'm too late but one of my favorite coming of age movies is “yes, god, yes” I love the humor so much!
Happy to here your dad is doing well:) 1st i need to check out, also have you watched Boyhood? It's kind of coming of age movie in documentary style

honestly i like how real lady bird was, because towards the end lady bird ditched the popular kids and hung out w her old friends. like it showed that not everyone has to be popular ig, and thats ok cuz you can still have fun? idk
i will never emotionally recover from call me by your name
“The Edge of Seventeen”, “Lady Bird”, “Rushmore”, “Moonrise Kingdom”, “Superbad”, “The 400 Blows”, and among those other coming-of-age films are very exceptional.
I don't know if it could technically be considered a "coming of age" movie, but one of my absolute favorites is Then Came You,,, but fair warning you'll most definitely cry 😔✌
Sauce boy from eighth grade is so precious
must protect 🤧
if you ever end up making a film please try something like mid90s but with girls as the main characters 🤍
