Love Jordan's take on this. It is a great example of many classic Gothic romances and Gothic horror novels of the 19th century where one guy is the "tall dark and handsome" and the other is the shrinking violet who needs saving but who by the end of it, either succumbs to that overly aggressive male, or breaks away from that narcissistic personality and falls for the "tall gentle and kind".
The Beast really is a prince who was punished by a hag because of his own overly sensitive egotistic nature. Not too dissimilar to Gaston. Yet the Beast becomes someone loathing of all things female and human, and yet he knows that is his own way out of the hell he's found himself in.

What he says about Gaston is always what I thought of it without putting it into the words that Jordan just did there. It's like they say, "tale as old as time." The Gothic horror story is probably what started it in a more modern novel storytelling. The women love the "tall dark and handsome" but then realize that "tall dark and handsome" is not the greatest for their mental health.

I've met many of the kinds of people JBP's talking about. I've met the narcissistic psychopaths who can snare naive women with their faux competence.
I've also met those women who've never had a good relationship with a man, and so every forthright and even somewhat assertive act by a man puts off alarm bells in their head. It's so frustrating, and very sad.

Church is a community. He says in the video that when the community gets large enough it becomes a place where psychopaths can hide. They can look like productive members but in reality are not.
These people tend to be the pastors. God even points this out in several scriptures.
No longer shall the shepherds feed themselves. I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, that they may not be food for them.
They are supposed to feed the flock. Not themselves. Now, not saying that people are specifically becoming pastors because they are psychopaths but being raised that you are God's chosen, anointed, then elected or appointed over others, and whether you asked for it or not, but simply being in the position will have ignorant people just hang on your every word I think the position creates them.

This is one of the worst takes I've every heard in my entire life.
All the women in town love Gaston. Belle finds him unappealing. She sees through what is considered ideal masculinity. It has nothing to do with reciprocity in economics. Jordan could not be more wrong about the meaning of the story.
The story challenges the status quo of what it means to be a man and a woman. Belle is an intellectual, the beast is actually a gentleman.
There's a reason why all of the servants became objectified and lost their humanity, just like the beast. It shows how love is what makes human beings human. Without love, men are beasts, and people are little more than tools or objects.
BTW, who does the beast transform into when he breaks his curse? It's a huge clue as to how different this story really is. Underneath the facade of the beast, is a real gentleman, something Gaston "could never be". Gaston represents toxic male masculinity. The beast represents man without love.

If you understand the mimetic function of our psychology, and what myth means to a psychoanalytic thinker like him, then these cartoons are retelling patterns of behavior that have repeated across enough time to be as meaningful as he is expressing, or more... It's probably more. But this interpretation is pretty great. And he also brings in a kind of factor analysis to back up his claims....

@@samuelf5985 sure but at the end of the day these are stories for theatrical release, the writers are trying to entertain. I’m sure you can get wordy about intellectualizing this fundamental fact but they are sketches that ultimately get animated.

@@conformityfarm Well I think thats where the mimetic function comes in - it is something that our psychology is more than just entertained by, but something we enjoy as we are (consciously or unconsciously) placing ourselves within the story etc. to embody wisdom that we already contain in some sense.. but yeah, I believe I get your point. However, its hard to say what the end of the day thing is... including Peterson's take.

Yea but why would a psychopath's behavior, that has as a consequence this destabilizing effect, be better than just none of the evil along with competent good people focusing on fixing and working through the flaws?

Listen. Fuck psychopaths I dont care if they get eaten alive
All I say is that society is cursed as well. Society is weak and has allowed oppressions and double standards and unjustice for thousands of years. Dot idiolize society.
      That what I meant
And you make a huge assumption that you think society focus on their flaws and fix it

Since you said the F'word your comment isn't showing up for me here, but on my email.... so hopefully im responding to you in full: If thats what you meant then you should have wrote something that indicated that more. I assumed nothing, I responded to what you wrote. I did not say you like or respect psychopaths, nor that I idealize society, but I certainly don't beleive your criticisms of society are the dominant view we should be taking when looking at the western world today. Also whose to say that it isn't the psychopaths, narcissists etc sharing a large part in causing all of those ills of society in some sense.

It's important to remember that they are talking about western models for relationships. Indigenous dynamics don't have those issues, which is why western males try to stamp it out and commit genocide historically against me indigenous peoples.
