  • There is some unknown and incorrect info since the work this video is based on is 50+ years old. This is based on Margaret L. Press’ 1970s description and is not an accurate description of how MODERN 21-century CHEMEHUEVI is spoken.
Chemehuevi forms part of the Uto-Aztecan language group, which also includes languages like Nahuatl, and Comanche. It is spoken mainly in the Chemehuevi Valley in Southeastern California near the Nevada border, historically the tribe live right on the Colorado River and around Lake Havasu..
****Today the number of native speakers is not known****, or even if the language is undergoing a revival but there is a glossary or rudimentary dictionary in progress. The pronoun and suffix systems are by far the most difficult topics in this language. This language is agglutinative and therefore has its own complex system of attaching suffixes and special rules about what kinds of nouns and verbs get which suffixes. This video could not cover all the grammar features of Chemehuevi, because it has a lot of grammar and rules but we cover the gist of the aggluatinative grammar structure and basic syntax.
    Question of the day:
What was your favorite feature of Chemehuevi? Is it similar to other Uto-Aztecan languages you may have studied?
Do you speak Chemehuevi, do you understand other dialects or variants of Northern/Southern Paiute? ?
