- Hey everyone! Welcome to the Nest!
In today’s video I show you how to replace an engine air filter on a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. This process should be the same for all 3rd generation Outlander Sports, but it is at least the same for the 2016+ Outlander Sport models. The 2020+ redesign has the same airbox.

Thank you so much for watching, it truly means the world to me!
The rounded corner thing REALLY frickin helped my brotha, thank you so much.
Awesome! You’re very welcome! When I struggled myself on it, I knew I had to point that out. Gotta love engineers! 😅
THANK YOU! I struggled trying to get my new air filter in and your directions of what side and what corners go where saved me 😅
You’re very welcome. Glad I could help! They don’t make things simple any more do they?!
Putting this in my RVR was brutal. The old filter would slide on and off no problem, but the new filter, the plastic piece on the right side of the box that lies under the clamp would not slide on top of the new filter. Closing the box took forever and it was forced shut
The RVR’s must have a slightly different box then. Honestly these types of air boxes are the MOST annoying in my opinion.
Thank you! Several tips here will help this 66 year old gal change it out. Like, I had no idea that lever released the hood!🤦🏼♀️👍🏻
You’re very welcome! I’m really glad I could help save you some time and money by skipping the dealership on this simple repair
Thanks for the great help i was struggling.
You’re very welcome Joel! I struggled at first as well, so I’m glad this video was able to help you and so many others!
Whoever engineered the filter box wins the award for worst design ever! Took me 15min to change what should have taken 2.
Can’t say I disagree with that statement. 🤣 makes me feel better I wasn’t the only one to struggle with it! 🥲
Not nearly as horrible as my 2001 MPV air box. Damn near impossible to separate the halves without removing the entire air hose assembly.
rock auto is the best
nice vid i was just about to change my filter and vid was very helpful cheers
I appreciate the view, comment and kind words. Glad I was able to help!
It's a nightmare to change the airfilter. I wonder what magic you did to get it snugly fit right in first go. I struggled. Really
That’s the wonderful world of editing for you. The first take did NOT make the cut 😂😭
It was such a PITA that it’s why I decided to upload this DIY to try and help others
Help! I tried to change mine earlier today. I got the old one out no problem. I couldn't get the housing to line up and seal properly with the new one in. Had to have an employee at a local Advance Auto store help me get the top shut but he said the underside didn't seal correctly. Gonna take it to the dealership in the morning to see if they will fix it and not charge me an arm and a leg. Are there teeth on the bottom that need to be interlaced before the rest of the housing will come together? Thank you.
Larry, good evening! Yes there are some teeth that need to line up. Personally I would open the top and take out the air filter. Get a flash light shining on the air box so that way you can line up the teeth. The teeth are like inserts. It’ll help if you have a second person with the filter ready to help. Once the bottom is aligned, separate the top just enough to slide the filter in, then close the top. These side open type air boxes can be a pain! I prefer top open like on my Spark and Jeep. Hope this helps Larry! Feel free to comment again or direct message me on Instagram. My name is also NBHRaven on there. I get and see my notifications instantly so I’m here for you! No need to pay the dealer for a simple, yet pita fix
Do you have a direct link to these items on RockAuto?? Or the exact Part Numbers? I'm new to doing stuff to my car so I need all the help I can get!
Good evening! Sorry for the delay in response but this is the link to 2019 Outlander Sport air filters. Next link will be cabin air filters. Engine air filter is under the “Fuel/Air” category and cabin air filter is under “Heat/Air Conditioning.

This is also for the 2.0L motor, but I believe the 2.4L motor uses the same air filter. The cabin air filter is not engine dependent.
The only bad thing with rockauto is shipping sometimes
I’ve only had a couple of issues, and only once was it the wrong part. My shipping issues are usually because of FedEx. Love Rock Auto though!
Horrible design! I always changed my filters on any car I owned but this here is a special device of torture. I'm still struggling with it, an hour after I took the old one away.
Honestly, I still struggle even with this tutorial for others haha. Just replaced at 44k miles and struggled for 5 minutes
@@NBHRaven good for you.
@@Orlin_does_stuff I’m sorry that you’re still struggling with it. Definitely an inherently horrid design and should honestly be a top/bottom design rather than side by side
@@NBHRaven top bottom is the key. I am missing my Dodge journey.
It's done now but the memory isn't good.
@@Orlin_does_stuff I even saw one that was just like the cabin air filter where you remove cover and pull out. THAT is the king design. I’m glad youre finally done with that though
