Moulton deluxe Hebridean way

  • Cycle expedition to Scottish Outer Hebrides islands on vintage bicycle Moulton deluxe made in 1965 in Bradford on Avon in England. Started from my house in Burntisland, used only the bike, trains and ferries, no car. Cycled 40 miles on mainland Scotland and 210 miles on 9 islands all the way from Vatersay to Lewis and Harris. The plan was to camp or use any kind of shelters on the way. I followed mainly Hebridean way blue signs but not strictly, made my own way through. It took me 8 days in total from home to home..
    I've usually been going out for 2 or 3 days in last say 10 years and haven't been for a proper road bike cycling trip for many years. I knew this expedition will be all the way on roads and it will take about a week so I kept delaying the project for some time as I was too lazy to go out of my comfort zone which was finally the main reason why I forced myself to do it. Also in combination with the fact I've got my Moulton now and I enjoy to ride on this bike a lot.
    All times in the video are filming included. No puncture or any other major problem with the bike or myself! It was beautiful but hard thanks to it's remoteness and challenging weather condition.
    I have to say I haven't experienced a trip with such an intensive adventure feel all the way through for some time. Hope you enjoy watching.
    Filmed in May 2022 in Outer Hebrides in Scotland.

    Excellent video.Did it a few years ago my main memory wasn't the rain but the wind which reduced my speed to a walking pace at times but a great place to cycle.PS I did see an otter just after passing the sign , they do exist just as the tourist board promotes.🚴

    Love your film - I have a late 60’s Moulton which has been my main bike until I finally bought a new Moulton last year.
    The old Moulton is my favourite possession and l must have ridden it thousands of mile as a regular ride around Edinburgh, long day rides and mini cycle tours with a little tent, cycling events like the Eroica, West Coast of Scotland and many visits to the annual gathering of Moultoneers at Bradford on Avon.
    I’m watching this at my in-law’s place in Achiltibuie - can see Lewis out the window - must bring the bike next time 👍

The trips I enjoy the most are those on Scottish islands. Did Arran, Mull and Hebridean way and planning more. Moulton bike means Adventure to me. Cheers Jonas

    Hi there, am reading a book at the moment called finding Hildasay by Christian Lewis, he walked the uk coastline, was looking at some of the photos and there is this bus and he comments on the broken back window, so I came back and watched your video again,I'm pretty sure it's your bothy bus, his journey began 2017 so the paintwork is in slightly better condition. Love it! I'm not in that kind of condition, but I Moulton'd from Glencoe to Oban, and the hills are no joke, especially loaded. But the beauty is jaw-dropping, and worth it. The Hinba coffee shop in Oban is enough reason to stay a day, and the harbor on a quiet night is gorgeous.

    What a great video Jonas ! Your sense of humour was needed in what must have been at times a difficult cycle through often wet and windy Hebridean weather. I was over on Barra and Vatersay with my Brompton bicycle in early May, 2021. The weather was lovely and sunny but bitterly cold. I camped near the spot where you camped on Vatersay but over the fence above the beach. The village hall was a great place for a bite to eat and a shower the next morning. In fact, I decided to stay there for a few days exploring the island and its beautiful beaches. I must get back up there again to travel further north. Slàinte 🥃 !

    • @jonashubalekwhiskyandthewild
      @jonashubalekwhiskyandthewild  Рік тому +1

      Thank you Michael, Barra and Vatersay are beautiful islands and I would love to stay longer in there or go back one day. Next one up Eriskay is also quite nice however then it wasn''t too interesting for me [and humor was needed indeed😁] I didn't find South Uist, Benbeculla, North UIst and Berneray very interesting.. just a boring moorland most of the time really. However that could be because the weather was rubbish when I was cycling through and I didn't have much views. But that was just a one day of cycling basically. Then you get to Lewis and Harris and that is a stunning island and I very much recommend it. It has got everything.. beaches, mountains, lochs, woods.. absolute paradise!
