Saint Vitus and The Obsessed for sure . I had a fondness for a band called Warhorse on the doom front of things . And I am not sure if you could throw all of the next band's work im about to mention here , but CLUTCH ! They have there moments in this genre at least !
Om - Conference of the Birds Somali Yacht Club - The Sun Virus - The Agent that Shapes the Desert Dead Meadow - self-titled or Howls from the Hills Acrimony - Tumuli Shroomaroom Spirit Caravan - The Last Embrace Witch - self-titled Conan - Blood Eagle Heavy Temple - Chassit Just a few of my favorites. The early Kyuss records are pretty much the cream IMO
Somali Yacht club, nice. Got a cd copy from them directly, they actually emailed me personally when I ordered it, the band back then handled all their orders themselves I agree with you, the more I dig in the genre the more I come to realise Kyuss covers it all and better than anyone.
MM is great! I was trucking over the road and met a young guy at a truck stop who looked like a young Dave Wyndorff (might not have the spelling right). I asked him if he liked hard rock and he said he loved it. I told him he needed to listen to Monster Magnet and he was fired up. I wonder how he liked it.
My favourite stoner rock albums are Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun, Dozer - From the Eyes of Heathens, Monster Magnet - Dopes to Infinity, Lowrider - Ode to Io
Witchcraft - Legend. Greenleaf- Hear the Rivers. Others Orange Goblin, The Sword, King Buffalo, 1000mods, Dozer, Clutch, TAD (I consider this early stoner not grunge). Mastermind by Monster Magnet is one of my favs.
No modern Stoner Rock list is complete without mentioning Elephant Tree. They only have a few albums, but they're all bangers. They haven't released a bad track. Modern kings of Stoner Psyche.
This is a good list but if you do more of these I hope that at some point you'll mention Acrimony's "Tumuli Shroomaroom" (1997) - it's an often overlooked masterpiece.
Great list. I agree with all of these choices. There is so much great music in this genre right now. Farflung A Wound in Eternity, Spaceslug Lemanis and Weedpecker III are good albums to add to this list.
King Buffalo is a new one for me, so thank you for making this video. The "new" band (past 20 years) that has not made it as big as I thought they would is THE SWORD. I would definitely have them on my list if I made one of these.
Here would be my list if you did a part 2. Fu Manchu in search of Orange Goblin time traveler blues Color Haze Tempel Dozer in the tail of a comet Nebula to the center Lowrider refractions Alabama Thunderpussy staring at the divine The Machine solar corona
CoC - Deliverance, Down - NOLA or Over The Under, The Sword - Warp Riders and Age of Winters, Uncle Acid - Blood Lust, Trouble - Psalm 9, Cathedral - The Ethereal Mirror, Elder - Reflections of a Floating World, The Obsessed - The Church Within, Green Lung - Woodland Rites. A lot of those are more to the metal side of things but I think they fit as much as Electric Wizard and Kyuss.
Should check out what Sweden has to offer - namely Truckfighters (They fight trucks!) and Dozer. Then there's 1000mods from Greece or even Thumlock from Australia. All good shit!
Only know Salem's Pot and Idle Wind. Have no albums. You can never see these bands in the UK. Is it really a retro boomer audience thing? Psychedelic metal
You can't talk about Welcome to Sky Valley without mentioning Whitewater. It is the greatest stoner rock song ever made. King of the Road by Fu Manchu, Blast Tyrant by Clutch and Deliverance by Corrosion of Conformity seem like glaring omissions, but I like that you purposely included some modern stuff. Some cool stuff to check out though, so thanks for that.
Interesting! This is giving away my age a bit, but when I think of Stoner Rock I think of Camper Van Beethoven, Phish and maybe Blues Traveller. I never realized there is a whole sub-genre of Stoner Rock that comes from the Metal branch of the family tree. Interesting...but we are smoking very different kinds of weed.😜
Greece is now the go-to place when talking about Stoner Rock. It’s more popular there than anywhere else, and their scene is mindblowing. Check the "Weedian - Trip to Greece" compilation.
Awesome!🔥low rider is quite good, but a little repetitive… or maybe the style is. Im not sure. When theres a lot of bands going after the same approach its hard to keep up.
I agree with the majority of it but some honorable mentions are in order: “NO-LA” by Down Anything by Wino era Saint Vitus The 1st Melvins record “The Church Within” by the Obsessed Self titled “Clutch” very early Soundgarden “Dopes to Infinity” Monster Magnet & of course “Paranoid” “Vol. 4” & lby Sabbath 🖤🤤
I hate the term "stoner rock". I have no interest in drugs but this stuff is both awesome to listen to and play on guitar. Implying you need drugs as well to like it just cheapens it. It's like saying you have a girlfriend who's prettiest when you're drunk.
Love what you’ve built here, but really could have used some more generous cuts of the actual music you’re talking about. Sure I could cut out and sample the music elsewhere, but I really felt very little flavor of any track. Just craving something more to chew on. 🙏🏼
Thank you for your feedback. I completely understand where you're coming from though. I usually keep the music clips short to avoid any issues with UA-cam, as their system detects songs and can affect the monetization of the video. Thanks for your support and patience!
Down, The Sword, Fu Manchu, and Clutch. Some lesser known bands that deserve a nod would be Graveyard, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, Kadavar, WoFat, and Nebula.
Excellent video. I grew up listening to Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Internal Void, etc, but being a Jersey boy, Monster Magnet was the first band I can say brought a truly original take on this subgenre. I bought the s/t CD (it was B4 Spine of God came out) at Vintage Vinyl----and that my doomy friends, is where the re-incarnation of all of this began. Lastly, why why why must everyone use the term "stoner rock" or "stoner metal"? It's theeeeee dumbest name ever, don't you think? If intelligent people stop using the term, maybe it''ll just go away.
Well, again, it’s kind of like a lot of other things. When you see/hear, you’ll know. I think of The Growlers song Sea Lion Goth Blues as an example of this genre.
Great video. Though the aesthetic is different, and it belongs to a less optimistic decade, I still think Black Sabbath were at root a Psychedelic band with their roots in blues, just like Jimi Hendrix. But from the dark side of trip. That's what's so good about them, and what's not as good about much metal ... except for these types of Stoner Rock bands. Who I do think are the rightful heirs. Too much metal is just a more ordinary angst and anger and cartoonish, whereas with Sabbath you always felt it was all a bit genuinely unhinged. And some, like Melvins, who are also very much their own unhinged thing - even if you can somewhat place them in a lineage, Melvins are Melvins. Same with Sleep, or Earth.
I thought rock was dead, and then I found Elder and that opened me up to all the rest. All them witches belongs on the list with king buffalo and lord 13.
Be nice if we could hear some clips of the songs that illustrate the points that you are trying to make. I'm trying to discover new music here. Well maybe not here. It's cool to talk about it but I'd like to hear some of it. Otherwise why watch the vid, you just made a video out of a magazine article. Not the best use of the medium...
Any album by Duel Any album by Mothership Any album by Ruby The Hatchet Any album by The Marlboro Men The Last Adventures Of Captain Dog by Blind Dog (how is this not on the list?) Burning Village by Mountain Witch Wayfarer by Void Cruiser Ascendancy by The Dirty Earth Riders On The Edge by Planet Cruiser High Place Phenomenon by Instant Boner Event Horizon by Dustrider Shovelhead by Mississippi Gun Club Odd by Descarado etc... etc...
Would you like to see part 2 with more stoner rock/doom metal albums?
Um yes!
Absolutely. Next time don't forget Mars Red Sky, Windhand, and Elephant Tree.
Saint Vitus and The Obsessed for sure . I had a fondness for a band called Warhorse on the doom front of things . And I am not sure if you could throw all of the next band's work im about to mention here , but CLUTCH ! They have there moments in this genre at least !
Fu Manchu, sHeavy, Orange Goblin and Monster Magnet's 'Dopes to Infinity' are notable absences from this list. Melvins as well maybe....i dunno
@@maluorno Aw man ! I forgot about Orange Goblin ! Good call brother .
Fu Manchu "King of the Road"
Dozer "Through the Eyes of Heathens"
Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats "Blood Lust"
Are all essential Stoner Rock albums. 😎
Agreed! Adding to that list:
Witch S/T
35007 - Liquid
Mars Red Sky - S/T
Slift -Ummon

Red Fang - S/T
and so many more
@@doctoraep Truckfighters Mind Control is top tier as well
Nice picks
Clutch self titled should be here.
Absolutely!
Dude! Totally! Ahead two thirds!!
Almost any early Clutch could be on the list. Especially Elephant Riders!!
@@_Clem_H_Fandango_ Yeah, thats more fuzzy and it fucking rocks
Immediately thought of that album
I'd personally say that Blues For The Red Sun was more groundbreaking, also at international level than Welcome To The Sky Valley.
1000 Mods, Villager of ioannina city and all the Greek scene !
Corrosion of Conformity's Deliverance should absolutely be here. Actually any COC with Pepper Keenan on vox.
Wiseblood!! Forevah!!!
Fly on albatross
Totally agree. A classic album
Time travelling blues by orange goblin is a stoner masterpiece!
Bro do u like bluesy stoner doom?
for sure. found them about 5 yrs ago. glad i did
Desperately needs a vinyl reissue, gatefold tasty artwork please.
Shout out to Stoned Jesus, 1,000Mods and Asteroid, three super underrated Stoner bands, love 'em to death.
Super vid! Sabbath has been my favorite band for 40 yrs but strangely, i know little about stoner rock. Very helpful.
Is that Buck Dharma at 7:35 in the lower central part of the screen?
I'd say it is.
The lack of a Fu-Manchu mention seems concerning.
Check out the blog
thank you -I'm just kind of getting into this genre and I appreciate all the good advice
Check out the early stuff from an American band called corrosion of conformity , pepper Keenan ( guitarist in down ) is the singer and guitarist .
Om - Conference of the Birds
Somali Yacht Club - The Sun
Virus - The Agent that Shapes the Desert
Dead Meadow - self-titled or Howls from the Hills
Acrimony - Tumuli Shroomaroom
Spirit Caravan - The Last Embrace
Witch - self-titled
Conan - Blood Eagle
Heavy Temple - Chassit
Just a few of my favorites. The early Kyuss records are pretty much the cream IMO
SYC's Sun is a banger!
Somali Yacht club, nice.
Got a cd copy from them directly, they actually emailed me personally when I ordered it, the band back then handled all their orders themselves
I agree with you, the more I dig in the genre the more I come to realise Kyuss covers it all and better than anyone.
Finally someone talking about Monster Magnet 👍🏻
Monster Magnet is awesome 🤘
MM is great! I was trucking over the road and met a young guy at a truck stop who looked like a young Dave Wyndorff (might not have the spelling right). I asked him if he liked hard rock and he said he loved it. I told him he needed to listen to Monster Magnet and he was fired up. I wonder how he liked it.
My favourite stoner rock albums are Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun, Dozer - From the Eyes of Heathens, Monster Magnet - Dopes to Infinity, Lowrider - Ode to Io
King Buffalo is one of the best bands i've heard in 30+ years
💯
Melvins
🤘Buzz and Dale 🤘
My favorites include Saint Vitus, Monster Magnet, Kyuss, Earthless and Sleep. Spine of God is such a great album!
Acid bath were pretty hard to put into one specific genre but I feel they were pretty influential
1000 mods also really good
UFOMAMMUT from Italy. So so good
Good video, I would recommend Acid King- Busse Woods, Orange Goblin-Time Travelling Blues, and Cathedral-The Ethereal Mirror.
Orange Goblin is sick!!
I don't know much stoner rock but my two favourites are California Crossing by Fu Manchu and Powertrip by Monster Magnet.
Witchcraft - Legend. Greenleaf- Hear the Rivers. Others Orange Goblin, The Sword,
King Buffalo, 1000mods, Dozer, Clutch, TAD (I consider this early stoner not grunge).
Mastermind by Monster Magnet is one of my favs.
Right on. Thanks for sharing.
No modern Stoner Rock list is complete without mentioning Elephant Tree. They only have a few albums, but they're all bangers. They haven't released a bad track. Modern kings of Stoner Psyche.
The Sword
The sword is sooo much more than stoner rock though. Love that band!
Fun Manchu, Nebula, The Melvins, Clutch, Goblin Cock and for an older crowd U.F.O.🤘
No one has mentioned my favorite stoner band, Windhand. Well, my favorite along with Electric Wizard.
If you get into these bands, try Neurosis and Yob, and, perhaps, Black Sabbath
CLUTCH self titled would be #1 on my list
This is a good list but if you do more of these I hope that at some point you'll mention Acrimony's "Tumuli Shroomaroom" (1997) - it's an often overlooked masterpiece.
Thanks man, i'll check it out!
Clutch self titled (Moon Album) is my all time favorite to smoke up too!
Check out Montréal's Dopethrone. Stoner/Doom riffs with a Black Metal- style vocal....wicked
Master of Reality Black Sabbath 1971
The blueprint
Spelljammer will be checked out for sure.
Good list buddy
Awesome, thanks!
monster magnet is absolutely mind crushing!!!
Elder.. Reflections of a Floating Planet - EPIC.
Great list. I agree with all of these choices. There is so much great music in this genre right now.
Farflung A Wound in Eternity, Spaceslug Lemanis and Weedpecker III are good albums to add to this list.
That Farflung album is great!
Spaceslug is the greatest modern stoner band imo. Eye the Tide from them is such a masterpiece as well.
I put these closer to spacerock than stoner but yeah they rip
King Buffalo is a new one for me, so thank you for making this video. The "new" band (past 20 years) that has not made it as big as I thought they would is THE SWORD. I would definitely have them on my list if I made one of these.
Glad I could help, thanks for watching!
Dead Otter, Bask, are similar progressive stoner with King Buffalo. 3 greats
Pentagram review your choices, King Buffalo Longing to be the Mountain, Sheavy Celestial Hi Fi, Truckfighters Gravity X, Solace Further
Review your choices is my favorite Pentagram album
Bongzilla, All them witches, The Swell Fellas, Bantha Rider and Bong Ripper are a few more worth the listen
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats - Blood Lust 🤟
Here would be my list if you did a part 2.
Fu Manchu in search of
Orange Goblin time traveler blues
Color Haze Tempel
Dozer in the tail of a comet
Nebula to the center
Lowrider refractions
Alabama Thunderpussy staring at the divine
The Machine solar corona
CoC - Deliverance, Down - NOLA or Over The Under, The Sword - Warp Riders and Age of Winters, Uncle Acid - Blood Lust, Trouble - Psalm 9, Cathedral - The Ethereal Mirror, Elder - Reflections of a Floating World, The Obsessed - The Church Within, Green Lung - Woodland Rites. A lot of those are more to the metal side of things but I think they fit as much as Electric Wizard and Kyuss.
Dark Castle - Spirited Migration. This should be on every stoner playlist.
No Dr. Colossus?
Everybody needs Sleep!
Agreed
The first stoner rock song was Freedom by Buffalo from '73
I'll see your Freedom and raise you a Sweet Leaf from '71
CLUTCH
YES. The self titled album is a smoked out masterpiece. Those guys rarely get the credit they deserve
@@reggiebannister4098 elephant riders too😶🌫
Completely agree.Blast Tyrant ain’t bad either!
Should check out what Sweden has to offer - namely Truckfighters (They fight trucks!) and Dozer. Then there's 1000mods from Greece or even Thumlock from Australia. All good shit!
Not having anything from Fu Manchu or Nebula is a serious oversight 🤔
My bad! Check out the blog maybe there is some Fu Manchu mentioned there!

Just as Philosophy is a footnote to Plato, Stoner Rock (imho) is a footnote to Black Sabbath.
I'm 57, dig in! I thought it was just Tool and QOTSA that were still active. There's a bunch of awesome bands in this comment section
Los natas - Delmar y Ciudad de Brahman. Dos álbumes fundamentales.
gracias por el descubrimiento! ¡Su segundo álbum es absolutamente excelente!
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats?
Blood Lust should be on the list
stoner rock will blow up in the late 2020s to revive rock and finally kill hip hop and rap
Corrosion of conformity ?
Yeah, maybe I will have to do part 2 with Deliverance!!
Nebula!!
Where's Nebula ?!!
All Them Witches.
Greece is now the go-to place when talking about Stoner Rock. It’s more popular there than anywhere else, and their scene is mindblowing.
Check the "Weedian - Trip to Greece" compilation.
Thanks i'll check it out!
Low rider - ode to oi and Karma to burn - wild wonderful purgatory and Unida - urban coyote are my go to albums .
Awesome!🔥low rider is quite good, but a little repetitive… or maybe the style is. Im not sure. When theres a lot of bands going after the same approach its hard to keep up.
Wo Fat's Pychedelenaught deserves an honorable mention.
I agree with the majority of it but some honorable mentions are in order: “NO-LA” by Down
Anything by Wino era Saint Vitus
The 1st Melvins record
“The Church Within” by the Obsessed
Self titled “Clutch”
very early Soundgarden
“Dopes to Infinity” Monster Magnet
& of course “Paranoid” “Vol.
Myopic list, thanks for sharing your personal favorites.
My pleasure.
atm it's GNOME
Acid King - "Busse Woods" Give it a listen. Thank me later.
Black Pyramid - Black pyramid? Good album I’d say suits our stoner metal genre
Love what you’ve built here, but really could have used some more generous cuts of the actual music you’re talking about. Sure I could cut out and sample the music elsewhere, but I really felt very little flavor of any track. Just craving something more to chew on. 🙏🏼

Nightstalker baby
Orange Goblin’s Big Black is a must too
What is the real musical difference between hard rock and stoner rock?
Down, The Sword, Fu Manchu, and Clutch.
Some lesser known bands that deserve a nod would be Graveyard, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, Kadavar, WoFat, and Nebula.
Uncle acid👍
Have you heard Church of the cosmic skull?
What about PUNCH......Deathhead on the Brown Acid LP......??
Recorded in 1970...kicks ass!!
This helped me discover King Buffalo, and all I can really say is HOLY S@!T!
Clutch and COC as mentioned by others.
Plus Sasquatch (listen to I, II or III), Lee Van Cleef and Borracho.
I will check them out, thanks!
You have to include Unida here. Catchy melodic stoner. In my top ten bands………….welcome to the club.
Excellent video. I grew up listening to Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Internal Void, etc, but being a Jersey boy, Monster Magnet was the first band I can say brought a truly original take on this subgenre. I'm probably the only non-stoner who loves stoner rock! Lol! What can I say, I enjoy heavy music.
If you're going the sludge route, shouldn't something from the early fuckin Melvins be here? Like Lysol?
Well, again, it’s kind of like a lot of other things. When you see/hear, you’ll know. I think of The Growlers song Sea Lion Goth Blues as an example of this genre.
Of course, in terms of songs, also include Bananarama’s Cruel Summer, and STP’s Big Bang Baby as Stoner Rock Mainstream Crossovers…
You’d have to include Sublime somewhere in there. Because you can get to root real quick. Definitely Badfish.
Boris.
All Them Witches eclipses the whole genre
I thought rock was dead, and then I found Elder and that opened me up to all the rest. All them witches belongs on the list with king buffalo and lord 13.
Same here. Stoner rock and doom metal re-introduced my love for bands in general 💪

TCV#1 Super Group! ✨
Down with Phil Anselmo is also another gem especially with the album N.O.L.A
Queens of the Stone Age aren't stoner rock. Ask them.
They're just Rock N Roll to me. Not metal,Grunge or alternative like some like to count certain bands. Stoner Rock is just Rock to me 😂😂
QOTSA are what I consider melodic punk metal with psychedelic overtones, definitely not Stoner Rock.
and trippelganger, domkraft, goatess, mount saturn, temple of the fuzz wicth, ered guldur, frale, and son crow
Sugartooth self-titled album is an absolute must listen
I’d go dopes to infinity if a MM record
Los Natas?
Check out NOLA's Suplecs, "Wrestling my lady friend." This band should've been bigger. And also anything by Drunk Horse!
Any album by Duel
Any album by Mothership
Any album by Ruby The Hatchet

Saint Vitus and The Obsessed are there in my book .
Don't know whether Fu Manchu is more desert than stoner which is arguable, pillar band too
Nah i think they’re 100% stoner
