  • On this episode of Create Consume Repeat I finally answer the most commonly asked question I receive, how do you play videos during your live stream without spending a ton of money.
    In a previous episode, I reviewed the ATEM Mini Pro and mentioned that the only way to play video on the ATEM was to buy a Blackmagic design Hyperdeck. Well, that was not technically correct since there are various ways to get around this issue.

    I'm trying to soak in as much as I can from your videos. Wrangling my head around the different hardware and software components isn't easy and I appreciate the resources. I'd love to share these videos too but the one swear you add to all your videos means it's not for younger folks...who I imagine could really benefit from your content. Cheers!

      Thanks for the kind words. As for sharing the content with a younger audience… I list the video as inappropriate for younger audiences per UA-cam guidelines. That said, I’m certain they’ve heard worse.

    I have a similar setup with my ATEM Mini Extreme, only I run Companion on an Raspberry Pi with CompanionPi.
    You don’t need to create any macro on the ATEM for this to work. Connect OBS with Companion with an Instance.
    Then you will have access to all the OBS scenes from within Companion, and just drag and drop at will. I setup the OBS input as AFV.
    In Companion I also create an end video button, that will stop the playback, and select a blank scene in OBS (so I can trigger the same video again), as well as make an auto transition to the input that is in preview mode.
    Companion is so powerful. I hardly create any macros in the ATEM software, all is done in Companion.
    Nice video btw 👍

      Awesome tip. Your way is def. more advanced but also reliant on serious hardware chops/ programming chops. As for the blank scene and stop video. I have similar macros on my Stream Deck.

    Thanks for the tips. I recently changed from a MacBook pro 2017 to an M1 Macbook pro. I imported everything from one to the other and a couple of things for my live stream stopped working including the audio routing from the mac plugged into my Atem Mini Pro by HDMI. There doesn't;t seem to be any sound going from the Mac tot he Atem and I cannot figure out why.
    Also, a separate issue is that since updating photoshop, the Atem media pool export plugin won't show up in the export menu is PS even though the plugin is in the correct place in the PS plugin folder.

      1) Ensure you have selected the proper sound device from the Apple system preferences > sound menu. 2) Download and keep a copy of Photoshop 2021. I’ve already contacted Blackmagic design and they have yet to respond to the issue in Photoshop 2022

      @@CreateConsumeRepeat Thanks for the reply!I found the problem, I had a demo version of Loopback installed which was running in the background which was routing the audio to weird places.
      On the PS issue, OK thanks I will try that although I don't know how well that version runs on the M1s.

    Love your videos! Question - at 3:29 in your video: Windowed Projector > Fullscreen > BMD HDMI. I do not have this option, I only get the option Screen 1. I can see the input on my ATEM SSRC but can not get the video to trigger using the Screen 1 option. Mahalo for any advice here.

      1) Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Displays.
      2) Click the Arrangement tab.
      3) Make sure that the Mirror Displays checkbox isn’t selected.
      Hope that helps.

    This is great! Except I have to select "full screen projector" every time I launch the scene or else it won't play as a full screen. Is there a way to fix that in OBS?

    Hi, did you know which monitor was complementary with the Atem mini? When connecting my EIZO monitor to the Atem I get a magenta screen. Apparently it has to do with a YUV color profile. Are you familiar with this problem and if so do you know a solution that doesn't mean investing hundreds of dollars? Thanks 👍

    Unless I'm doing something wrong, you cannot use OBS for playback during a livestream. Every time you click on a scene, you have to set up a BMD full screen projector in OBS before you play the video. If you go to another video, you have to set up the full screen projector again. If you come back to the first video, guess what, you have to set up a FSP again because it doesn't save the projector setting from the previous play. So you can't go through and set each video to play a FSP because as soon as you click on a different scene, that setting disappears. Am I doing something wrong or is this the way OBS works?

    • @CreateConsumeRepeat

      Use windowed projector, then go full screen and leave it on your secondary display.

    • @dnorrisreporter

      @@CreateConsumeRepeat No matter what I do (even with projectors selected to "always on top") The new projector plays underneath the original. All I see is a still of the original video while the new video is playing underneath. If I mouse over my OBS icon, I can see all the projectors, but I have to physically click on the projector I want to get it to play through the ATEM. I'm not a tech guru, so I may be doing something wrong that could be fixed with a click of the mouse. But I can't seem to find the mouse click to fix it, and no one else, not even OBS seems to know it either.

    • @CreateConsumeRepeat

      For clarity sake, you should only use one projector window and switch scenes to play different video files.

    What's the point of creating a macro on the atem when you can do exactly the same on companion ?

    • @CreateConsumeRepeat

      You are referring to stacked actions in Companion and it boils down to preference and comfort level. Either way works.

    I don't get it. If I have two monitors on my pc. One running the ATEM software, the other running OBS. Then what output from my PC is connected to the ATEM input?

    • @CreateConsumeRepeat
      @CreateConsumeRepeat  3 роки тому

      The video assumes you already have a monitor connect to your ATEM for monitoring your feed. Sorry for the confusion.
      Setup
      I have and iMac with a Samsung 32” TV as the secondary display running into HDMI 4 on the ATEM. The ATEM output is running to an Atomos Ninja Inferno for monitoring.
      Bonus: The Atomos has a pass through that I use to pump out to the same 32” Samsung but on a different HDMI input on the TV itself.
      Sorry for any confusion I hope this answers your question.

      @@CreateConsumeRepeat so, the TV on your iMac functions as a secondary screen. That makes sense. But how is the TV an input for your ATEM, does it loop thru the input from your iMac?

    • @CreateConsumeRepeat
      @CreateConsumeRepeat  3 роки тому

      The TV isn’t an input. The iMac is the input, only displaying what I put on the secondary display of the iMac.

      @@CreateConsumeRepeat I know this is from a year ago... I am stuck exactly on the same point this person was. If you have an iMac with a TV as the secondary display, then there is an HDMI (or other video cable) going out into that Television, right? How is the iMac secondary output also physically plugged into HDMI 4 on the ATEM? Are you using a splitter? The actual connections are really quickly glossed over, I'm sure in the interest of trying to keep these short and sweet (and they are sweet, don't get me wrong, I love them, lol) but I am still lost here on how everything is actually physically connected.

    • @CreateConsumeRepeat
      @CreateConsumeRepeat  Рік тому

      Hi, Jeff. OBS is on the same computer. You need a separate display connected to the iMac/PC. You will also need to have your Mac/PC connected to an input on the ATEM. The part most people miss is opening a projector in full screen on the secondary display. This is covered in most if not all the videos but people tend to miss it. Hope this helps.

    • @CreateConsumeRepeat
      @CreateConsumeRepeat  2 роки тому

      OBS will not switch your ATEM. You will need to do that manually or create a macro that triggers OBS and the ATEM to switch (I recommend the Elgato StreamDeck)

    • @christophergarofalo
      @christophergarofalo 2 роки тому

      @@CreateConsumeRepeat yeah that's what I'm attempting. Atem macro, companion, obs, streamdeck. I can make a button to switch and a button to play an obs video but when I try to combine the actions, it only plays the video.

    • @CreateConsumeRepeat
      @CreateConsumeRepeat  2 роки тому +1

      I would ensure the macro is working in the ATEM Software control panel. Once that is verified ensure it is recognized and able to be triggered in companion. If all that works then check the sequence in stream deck. The only other thing I could suggest is ensuring the key is activated.

    • @christophergarofalo
      @christophergarofalo 2 роки тому

      @@CreateConsumeRepeat Yeah, I don't get it. The macro works in the Atem software, in the Companion emulator and on the streamdeck. But once I combine it in a multi action, it only plays the video and does not switch the Atem. I guess worst case I can create a button to start the video and a button to switch the Atem and press both.

    • @CreateConsumeRepeat

      If it all works I would add some pauses in the multi action. If you need more details or want to look at my macro I would check out this video (skip to the 8:50 second mark) and download my macro file: ua-cam.com/video/ZD114_CCTpE/v-deo.html

    So the way to make it simple is to buy several new pieces of equipment, and master both OBS and whatever the deck software way. I've got to stream on Sunday, and this is Thursday. I could probably figure this out if I didn't have anything else to do for the next three days. This is not a simple solution in any way.

    • @CreateConsumeRepeat
      @CreateConsumeRepeat  3 роки тому

      Bruce, I am sorry to hear you don’t find the tutorial simple. I tried really hard to take the complexity out of the process. If you have an important stream on Sunday and planning to do animation on a device that technically doesn’t support animation I would simplify your stream.
