@@JamesPrime1 would definatly recommend the national park areas like Pembrokeshire, the Gower, Brecon Beacons or Snowdonia. As long as the weather is favourable there are some absolutely stunning sights to see
I love Wales. I'm from England; just over the bridge, but spent a lot of time in Wales as a kid. We used to holiday in a little bay called Parrog in Pembrokeshire every summer. It's a beautiful country and most people are very warm and friendly (even to the English). Also, when I was at school, half of my teachers were Welsh. Many used to travel over the bridge to teach, or moved over for the work. The first Severn bridge was completed when my parents were kids. It transformed Bristol. Nowadays, there are thousands of Welsh people living and working this side of the bridge, and vice-versa. Also, for those who don't know the meaning of the long town name....."Literally translated, the long form of the name means: "[The] church of [St.] Mary (Llanfair) [of the] pool (pwll) of the white hazels (gwyn gyll) near to [lit. "over against"] (go ger) the fierce whirlpool (y chwyrn drobwll) [and] the church of [St.] Tysilio (Llantysilio) of the red cave (-ogo[f] goch)"."
@@Spnlgrl1985 The national animal of Scotland is the unicorn. It’s hilarious because every other country in the world has some animal that actually lives in their country, that they can see out in the wild and point to and say “That’s our country” about, and protect the ecosystem for it and lead conservation efforts and look out for it, as their national animal... And then there’s Wales and Scotland. Actually, England having a lion as their national animal is pretty silly, too-they definitely don’t live there, either, except in zoos-so I guess the three of them deserve each other.
What bothers me is that people apparently think “Scottish” is a language. There are two living languages from Scotland: the Germanic language Scots and the Goidelic language Scottish Gaelic. I hope that this video doesn’t confuse people into thinking there’s one Scottish language or that those two are interchangeable.

Hi James, Well done on your video. It's really nice to see our little country being promoted and brought into the light. I always feel proud when I travel, telling people that I'm Welsh but it does often lead to blank looks especially when I'm in America.
Hey G, I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it! Last year when I was traveling around the U.K. I planned on visiting Wales. But there was no place I could stay because Covid. I nearly made it to Wales, hopefully one day I can make it there and get a good feel of what Wales has to offer!
The rather portly Welsh comedian and singer, Harry Secombe, was once asked by a reporter if he really came from Wales. "Of course I come from Wales", Secombe replied. "Look at me - I couldn't have come from bloody sardines!"
James, I really enjoyed this video and thank you for sharing this with us all. With best wishes from Malcolm Hughes from Colwyn Bay, North Wales 🏴

One thing about the language, you said 99% of people speak English that is true but for a lot of people like 28% it's actually there second language with Welsh being there first
* Raises hand * - And, despite an old encyclopaedia my dad found in a disused windmill years ago suggesting that Welsh would die out soon (it was published in the early 20th century before the discovery of Pluto), at that time there were people in Wales who couldn't speak a word of English.
@@daviddavies3637: Yup. My father, despite living in the Rhondda, had to be bilingual because up into the 1940s some of his relatives spoke no English.

There are several accents in Wales, though. Interestingly, you're more likely to hear accents from Welsh-speaking farming communities. That's primarily because their English isn't that good so some farmers actually struggle to speak it properly.

This was actually super wholesome. Most of the time Americans don't look great in these videos but I like that you didn't try to make them look stupid and just showed us what they do know. I was impressed most of them knew Wales is in the UK and knew roughly where that was on a map! I love that the one girl pointed to New South Wales in Australia and the girl who randomly guessed almost everything right about Wales 😂
I'm from Wales and to be fair some strong questions there. If anyone is planning on visiting the beautiful country, look at travelling around Snowdonia region, tonnes of mountain climbing, lakes, waterfalls just very aesthetically pleasing, plus more people there use the native tongue so you'll learn a few things.
Stumbled across this video. Being a Welshman who now lives in Belgium (from one small country to another) it was funny to watch. Hope you make more videos like this soon, James!

Let's see, what do I know about Wales ... I know Swansea in addition to Cardiff. Unsurprisingly, I know Dylan Thomas. Coal mining, and the Aberfan tragedy in the 1960s. Legendary birthplace of King Arthur; actual birthplace of King Henry VII. David Lloyd George. Welsh freedom-fighters like Llewelyn I, Llewelyn II, and Owen Glendower. And, for some reason, all the curling stones that Scots use are actually made from stone quarried in Wales.

James thank you for showing Houston's name sign after showing the skyline! I wish I could recognize more skyline's, but there are only a few I know for sure. Other than the geography, I was impressed that people knew as much as they did. I know two people that live in Wales (but they don't talk about it much), saw a few pics from someone that hiked there, and I learned a little cultural context from an episode of the Crown. This was an interesting pop quiz. Got the national animal wrong...I thought it would be the wooly sheep, but they went mythical like Scotland.
Thanks Elaine glad you liked it! I myself don’t know any people from Wales, but I’m hoping to make it over there at some point and see some of that land myself. I’ve heard some pretty good things about the place, I need to see it for myself though. And thanks for watching the video 👍🏽
Very nice Vid! I'm pleased that they all 'had a go' at the place names. The funny thing is that after you've learnt how to say some of the letters like 'LL' and 'CH' , Welsh is easy to say as it's almost completely phonetic, (and yes, I can say 'LlanfairPwll.............. from memory! )
Thanks gelli! I’d like to go there and learn a bit of the language myself. I know I could just look it up, but there’s nothing like immersing yourself in the culture by being there.
James thank you for shining a light on my beautiful Country of Wales. I was glad to see most of your contributors didn’t put us down. There are Welsh signatures on your independence declaration & Pensylvania had a large Welsh influence
I have been to Cymru and would love to go back. Cardiff is a cool city with a lot going for it. Snowdonia is still on the bucket list, along with Caernarfon and Anglesey. I am a bit too old to try climbing Crib Goch, but otherwise would love to do some hiking around there.
My only visit to Wales was in 1966. When we crossed the border from England at Chepstow, we realized we were in a different country--the architecture, signage, etc. was different from England. We went on to Cardiff, Aberystwyth, and then through North Wales before crossing back into England near Birkenhead.
Don’t be too discouraged. As a Welsh person, took me 7 years to learn the long place name and I still don’t have the ‘sound effects’ down 😂 good effort

The funniest part of that name is that it was made to attract tourists

Yes. No one uses the full name. I was born and brought up on Anglesey and I'm OK with the pronunciation but I still have trouble remembering the full name.
Mate you were respectful throughout. So were the people you asked. Done well. Especially the man who'd already been to the UK. 👍

Im Welsh and I loved this! Thanks for showing our country off a bit 🥰 Good tries on the pronunciations and this is the first lot of Americans that haven’t been rude and taking the piss! 👏🏻
Your language looks like it should be pronounced a certain way and then I hear the real pronunciation and I'm so surprised. Very cool and I've always wanted to visit Wales, Scotland, England and Ireland as well as Northern Ireland, no particular order either☺️I have Irish and Welsh blood from my Mother's side.
Love the guy surprised at the red dragon being our ficticious national animal, after choosing Psyduck 😂
They're not fictitious, there's a small family of them living in my chimney, who I feed the odd stray Englishman to. They're quite shy creatures and only come out when nobody's looking (Dragons I mean, not dyn Saes).
I appreciate this promotion for our country 🏴
Thank you! Looking forward to visiting there at some point!
@@JamesPrime1 would definatly recommend the national park areas like Pembrokeshire, the Gower, Brecon Beacons or Snowdonia. As long as the weather is favourable there are some absolutely stunning sights to see

Hi James, I’m Welsh and I think it’s awesome you bring our little country the love, thank you. Great effort by all who participated
Hey Scot! I appreciate you watching the video, I am looking forward to visiting Wales soon!
Why would anyone logically speak Scottish in Wales when Welsh is an answer!?? 😂😂
I know that was funny! But I was surprised that the Dragon was the correct answer for the animal.
That was great! Thanks to James and everyone who participated.
Thank you Mama McFadden, I appreciate that 👍🏽
As an American of Welsh descent, who speaks a tiny bit of the language, I would have nailed everything but the pronunciation of "that town". Diolch am y fideo diddorol!

Welsh speaker living in Bridgend, South Wales here. Awesome & hilarious video man!
Fun fact for you brawd:
The Welsh settled in Patagonia, South America in 1865 and there is a Welsh speaking community there to this day, with Welsh schools, signs and so on. It's fascinating.
My cousin from the Rhondda Valleys visited there on a school trip and sat in on a Patagonian Welsh lesson. She's so lucky!
Btw, it's about 5% of the population of Wales that speak Welsh on a daily basis.
I'm from the coast where Welsh is the first language, I spent my childhood there because my mums family is from there but I moved later to England. I rememeber learning about Patagonia when I was in primary school 😂

Hi James,
Well done on your video. It's really nice to see our little country being promoted and brought into the light. I always feel proud when I travel, telling people that I'm Welsh but it does often lead to blank looks especially when I'm in America.
Hey G,
I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it!

There's a weird flip in Wales, where people who have the accent rarely speak the language, but most who speak the language rarely have the accent
@@Josh-cm9jw I hadn't noticed but you're right. I don't have an accent and speak the language. My wife has a Cardiffian/Llanrumney accent but doesn't speak the language. There are several accents in Wales, though. Interestingly, you're more likely to hear accents from Welsh-speaking farming communities. That's primarily because their English isn't that good so some farmers actually struggle to speak it properly.
@@daviddavies3637 moved here about 6 and a half years ago and it was one of my first observations lol. Guess you don't notice if you've lived around it your whole life
I love seeing people making videos about Wales! Love from Swansea🏴
Spot on. I lovely video with nice people 😊

Very nice Vid! I'm pleased that they all 'had a go' at the place names. The funny thing is that after you've learnt how to say some of the letters like 'LL' and 'CH' , Welsh is easy to say as it's almost completely phonetic, (and yes, I can say 'LlanfairPwll.............. from memory! )

My only visit to Wales was in 1966. When we crossed the border from England at Chepstow, we realized we were in a different country--the architecture, signage, etc. was different from England. We went on to Cardiff, Aberystwyth, and then through North Wales before crossing back into England near Birkenhead.
