I'm American. I researched Wales and the language for a writing project and fell in love with it. Everything they endured, standing defiant in spite of the odds - how can one not be inspired? They brought their language back from being endangered, and it continues to grow every year. For years I tried to learn a second language and would never stick with it (like Spanish, since my country has so many speakers living here). But something about Cymraeg spoke to me. I loved it from the first lesson. I started self studying on Duolingo and any books or videos or podcasts I could find. I write out my work calendars in Welsh, and put labels all over my household with the Welsh names for things. I may never become fluent like a native speaker, but I know I'll be studying and trying for the rest of my life. Cymru am byth!

My grandfather was Welsh through and through and I'm so proud of my Welsh roots! My daughter has now married a Welshman whose first language is Welsh so she's learning from him and having lessons through Bangor University. It makes my heart swell to know that the language is being passed down through the generations 😊. Diolch yn fawr!

Wherever I go in the world and talk to people they say oh you're from England(usually Americans)..... No I am Welsh and extremely proud of it Yma O Hyd is fantastic but the same as the national anthem listening to them live in the stadium is something very very special and I dare you not to cry.
I'm Irish and brought my son to theWales V Ireland Rugby match last February....a highlight of which was listening to the Welsh crowd singing the Welsh National Anthem ...it is truly moving!

I would like to mention that the Welsh have a long history of choral singing. There is a high level musicality in the population. I love this song I cry almost every time I hear it.

It was the Welsh who introduced the Welsh Not into the classroom, not the English. I know that might not fit the narrative of some but that's the reality. Teachers believed speaking Welsh would hold back children in later life so discouraged it.

I prefer Rugby over football but you cannot argue that the hymns and songs are what makes it magical. Great reaction ❤ I discovered you whilst going down the Ren rabbit hole. The people of Wales have been persecuted by the English over the centuries, so much so that only 1/4 of the country can speak our language. The English, brought something called the Welsh Not to all primary schools, if a child was caught speaking Welsh then they would get caned and be forced to wear a necklace with a WN on it, of course Welsh was the first language in those days. I am also English 😂 I moved here, learn the language and now have Welsh children, for their sake, I hope we escape the British political system 🏴 🏴 🏴

Although I appreciate your comment and how Truthful it is about how those of Wales have been treated, I must clarify one thing! It is the UK government. Not the British, as the only nation to founded by the British people is in fact Wales. Tolkien explains how it was Co-opted in his lecture on Germanic and British languages at Oxford university. He hated the fact that the English (his own people) started calling themselves British.
What about the sizable part of the population in the south east, that have a good deal of mixed heritage, many of whom are quite happy to call ourselves british.

Not just Welsh, the English tried to eradicate anything Celtic in the UK - they failed then and they will always fail! As a Welshman living in Northern Scotland for over 50 years I want Scottish independence SO badly!

Dafydd Iwan is an international hero, as proved by me as a Canadian of Native American and Celt(both Cymraeg and Gaelic) descent understanding it to be true, Yma o Hyd, We are still here.
When you look for international songs you must listen to "I am australian" by The Seekers! This is the really inofficial australian anthem which EVERY Australian can sing. The Seekers were a "Popgroup", founded in 1962 by Athol Guy, Keith Podger, Bruce Woodley and the wonderful voice Judith Durham. The Song is written and composed by Bruce Woodley. Judith Durham passed away last year on 5th August 2022, but she is unfogotten. I am German, but when I hear this song, I got goosebumps.
I’m not a big patriot at all, but I do love this song. I’m probably somewhere in that crowd of football fans singing it, with tears streaming down my face.

I've been a few times to Wales, beautiful country, fantastic people, ( girlfriend at the time studied in Swansea) brilliant time. Tjezus must have been the early 2000s. It has been too long. Have to visit them again.

I would recommend Suo Gan! People often confuse it for being Chinese, but it is in fact from Wales.
A true hymn. It doesn't always take elaborate compositions or instrumentations to create a very catchy song.
And I totally agree to your comment. We're all one race and I never understood why we're not able to come together as a whole and still accept our differences and see them as an enrichment to learn from one another. That doesn't mean we each should discard our different heritages or substitute our languages. Although I must admit that my native language of German has assimilated many English terms over the past years and even merged some words to a so called Denglish. But, language is always evolving. Nowadays nobody speaks in terms like Mozart, Beethoven, Goethe or Martin Luther (not the jr.). And let's be honest here: many of our words are of latin or greek origin and nobody complains about that...💛💛
First of all we are not one race we are a species made up of many races. If we were one race we would be universal donors but we are not as the body can reject transfusions and transplants from different races. Secondly we can't all just come together because we are different. That's nature, it's the same throughout the animal kingdom too. Animals protect their genes and so do humans. It's only recently in history people have started mixing races and that's because of decades of grooming from government propaganda. Wales is tiny and we are in serious trouble of being wiped out by mass immigration. We are definitely not the same, we, along with the rest of Britain and Ireland are racially abused every day by them and also gaslighted by the governments and media. Our kids have been getting gang ray ped for over sixty years by the foreigners and the establishment keeps trying to cover it up. Stabbings everyday, murders , lootings, ray ps. Child trafficking .etc. why would we want to live with that? It's slavery, not to mention the beheading of gay people. I got surrounded and spat on a few years ago by mus lims for holding my boyfriends hand in the street.. in my own country. Coukd of easiky killed us. We are sick of it. Why would we want that? We want our country back, we want our lives back and we want our freedom back. You seriously need to grow up and get your head of the clouds where you think everything is rainbows and unicorns.

The real magic in this song, is it has helped galvanise a Nation into saving its language. I remember how close the language came to dying out, it was not that long ago on several hundred people could speak Welsh fluently, after the decision to teach it in the schools etc it has become much stronger and will survive, unlike some other Nations where their language has been lost to most.

The song reminds me of the Israeli entry to Eurovision 1983 "Chai" and the singer reminds me of Bluegrass ( which comes from the UK immigrant's folk heritage among other things) great Ralph Stanley. There is btw also a great video on youtube of a lone Welsh football fan singing along to his national anthem surrounded by French fans..it is awesome..as is the French fans' reaction

Diolch yn fawr Rosaline, not the greatest example of singing from Cymru, but it is all about the meaning. Dafydd is pronounced more closely to Daveth, 1 F = V, 2 FF=F, double DD is more a TH, sound but uniquely Welsh sounding, and Y is a vowel. Welsh people were forced to speak English at school and wear wooden boards around their necks saying "Welsh Not", not quite like other nations, the English actively tried to irradicate the Welsh language and Welsh identity through violence and abuse. Hundreds of years of poems, tales and songs would have been lost, since many were not written down but shared.

Greetings from Scotland! *But* because, by birth, I am a Welshman I will say *"Croeso I Gymru, Gwlad Y Ddraig Goch!" (Welcome to Wales, Land of The Red Dragon!)* 😂😂 Jeez, my Welsh is rusty! But to be fair I was only 19yo when I left for my honeymoon in The Scottish Highlands. And 50 years later, I'm still here (and still married to the same lady!) 😊 A slight oddity in Welsh is a single "F" is said as a "V" and a double "FF" is said as an "F" then a Single "D" is said as a "D" but a double "DD" is said as a "TH" sound so Dafydd (David) is said as Davith (sort of) Don't ask what else because it gets very, very complicated to pronounce! Now you know why I have a great love for singing and music Rosalie!

We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in Edinburgh last weekend! I always felt at home among our Celtic cousins and all my family now are born in Scotland! So where does that lovely Welsh surname come from Drew? My family (Howells) came from Williams, Turners and Howells families. My wife is from Davies lineage.

Probably they are the bearers of the name! 😂 Interesting side story, my family surname should be HOWELL, but a drunken great grandfather registered the birth of his son incorrectly putting an S on the name - and it has been Howells ever since! 😂

I’d love to see you react (not sure if you already have or not, this was the first video I’ve seen of you) to Calon Lân, it’s a beautiful famous Welsh hymn, my grandma used to sing it to me and taught me the song, as well as the Welsh alphabet and some basic Welsh when I was growing up. I was born in England, I am quarter Welsh from my dad’s side although my auntie on my mums side married a Welshman, so I have Welsh on both sides, I’ve always felt more connected to my welsh side and now have been living in Wales since 2021 and I honestly don’t ever want to leave here, it’s home to me now. You explained everything so well in this video and I’m glad this song has spread and reached you, diolch ❤️🏴
Also, just to add a double d “dd” in welsh is a slight th sound, not a full th with your tongue going through your teeth, but the tip of your tongue touches the back of your teeth slightly and creates a hissy mix th sort of sound as the air is pushed through the small gap. I don’t know how to describe it properly but thought I might add that on as your pronunciation otherwise is miles better than what I’ve heard other people including fully English pronounce. I’d ask a fully Welsh person to back me up on this though as I have limited knowledge myself, only going off of what my grandma and aunties taught me and my Welsh books, I’m still learning 😅

im from a part of wales with a really weird new years tradition, we have a horse skull and decorate it with feathers and ribbons going from door to door entering peoples homes, its called Mari Lwyd.

Welsh is a Celtic language alongside Scots and Irish Gaelic. They are all much older than English. The Celtic people are the Ancient Britons.

It is not a folk song it is the anthem for the Welsh Nationalist Party, which has been adopted and sung at Rugby matches.

Thanks for looking at some of the UK's other native language songs, my favourite Welsh band is still Edward H. Dafis (1973 - 1980) I was involved in making the the cassettes of some of their albums for their music company "Sain"
I would have loved to go to one of their dances back in the day they looked to be great fun with some good ol Rock and/or Roll, and their protest songs are quite moving even though not being able to speak Welsh, with my favourite being "Cân mewn ofer" ( A Song in Vain) ua-cam.com/video/pDzBXKVeXzM/v-deo.html with Welsh and English lyrics.

As a Welshman, Yma o Hyd brings tears to my eyes on each and every occasion. The key thing about this folk song is that the language survives despite the efforts of past English political masters to try and suppress it. Children in the past were beaten in school if they spoke in Welsh and if the Welsh language had been lost then Welsh culture could have diminished.

It was the same in ireland and our Irish language now is getting stronger too. Love this song, you can see and feel the passion in this man and the crowd for this song. The thing is i don't understand why the English tried to wipe out the irish language, Welsh language and also the Scottish language but this didn't happen in other countries they colonised.

a single F in welsh is the equivalent of V in English and the Y because it’s in the last syllable of the word is the equivalent of I in English and DD is the equivalent of TH in English.
Iwan is pronounced ee-oo-an.
The I in this instance is an Ee as in keep sound. W is oo as in book.
So Iwan sounds like Ewan as in Ewan McGregor

Hint: Welsh f = English v, Welsh dd = English th (as in "the") and Welsh d = English d and the letter "a" is ALWAYS pronounced ah and never ay. Accordingly Dafydd is pronounced Dahvith. Surname pronounciation is approximately Eewan.

English is a Germanic language in it tree trunk if you like, mixed with Latin, French, Spanish, Indian (due to the Empire), Welsh, Scots Gaelic and Scots and Nordic, making up it's branches and leaves so it's kinda the most correct in some ways to be the world language and it's maybe the most mixed language in a lot of ways. Lot's of languages evolve, in fact every language does. But English in it's creation has been the most mixed of any language in the world it could be argued

He went to prison in the 70s due to campaigning for the Welsh language so yes, he is very dedicated to Wales, Welsh and his beliefs

Many years ago the English tried to ban the Welsh Language, what they did is to have sign and written on it was Welsh not this was hung around a Childs neck in school if they were speaking Welsh and and at the end of a school day the child that was wearing it was punished.
They were encouraged to report other children they heard speaking Welsh, so it would be passed on to them to wear. It was not a sign, it was a heavy wooden block on a chain.
