Hey all! I hope you enjoyed this video - and as the world is, let's be real, wild and scary right now, I was hoping to use this pinned comment as a place to maybe source some positive feelings, if at least for a moment. Feel free to reply below and just let me know what your favourite go-to game is. Y'know, the game you play when things are overwhelming and you just need to take your mind off everything for a few minutes/

Oh, should mention: Mine is actually Sonic CD. Either Steam or on my phone - I play the latter when I'm out and about working on projects haha! I've run through it enough lately that I can beat it in under 20 minutes, and I feel oddly proud of that. Also dove back into Pokemon Shining Pearl thanks to the Shaymin event today, so that was pretty cool!

@@StuffWePlay I’m not sure what my favourite of all time is, exactly… but I know Earthbound, Ristar, Ecco, and Puggsy top the list. For some real “comfort food” I’d probably cite Castle/World of Illusion and Quackshot, too. Hey, you should give Puggsy a go some time! It’s never gotten much coverage, yet it was one of the first games to try implementing a somewhat realistic physics system. And the music is some of the absolute best on the Sega Mega Drive, thanks to the incredible Matt Furniss.

@@StuffWePlay the Sega CD version is pretty great, and now I’m encouraging you even more to do a video about the game 😁 really the only “flaw” is that it doesn’t show off what a talented musician can get out of the Sega Mega Drive sound hardware. Kids these days and their CD quality audio!

I have this version too. Bought it when I was living in Italy but NOT in a physical store but ordering it through a store advertised in Consoles specialized magazine (in the 90s). Don’t really remember where it was coming from. Too many years passed 😅

I’m glad you’re still doing videos, Jamie, and on one of my favourite games, too! I’ve… still been going through utter hell these past few months, PTSD is getting _way_ too much, part of why I haven’t said “hi” lately, but it’s… somehow a comfort to know you’re still going.

The thumbnail I just looked at & I know exactly where this was made for. Essentially some parts of Asia that are not Japan or South Korea. Places like the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, etc.

From Germany? i doubt it since the form factor of the cartridge wouldn't fit on a german megadrive.

They sold the same bootleg segas from Russia in parts of Germany in the 90s so some of the games for that version crept into Germany

I'm from Germany and I never saw those gold logo variants back in the day. I own one, which I bought a few years ago from a collector who said it's from Asia.

I haven’t seen the video yet but I have seen these carts before, these are Asian PAL carts sold in Hong Kong and probably parts of Japan which used the PAL video standard at the time. They’re pretty cool collectables and if I remember rightly they should play on most any non-TMSS console they fit into. I might look into getting one of these for myself, as I don’t have a box for my copy of Sonic 3 and it’s pretty unreliable.

I have this for Sonic 3 and Aladdin. They have worked natively and normally on the PAL Sega Mega Drive (Australian) model 1 without modding, although Sonic 3 stopped working for me. I think it’s just one of those pin issues. 😊

I got my model 1 Mega Drive in South Africa in 1994 - weirdly, this exact version of Sonic 3 was the pack-in with that console, complete with the "For sale in Asia except Japan and Korea" text. I always wondered why my other Mega Drive cases and cartridges looked different to my copy of Sonic 3.
So it seems like this version made its way across many PAL regions (South Africa is a PAL country). Odd indeed!

10:50 At the risk of being THAT Well Acktshually guy, but: That Flag next to Alexis is Belgium, not Germany. Maybe it's just an unfortunate juxtaposition of picture and voice over, but just wanted to let you know :) (That said, "Meier" without a J is a super common last name in Germany, like Smith or Jones in English-speaking countries. Some variations include Maier or Meyer. With with the J in Meijer, it's distinctly Dutch.)

Because of the "Meijer" part of the person's name, I instantly thought Germany. There's a store in the mid-west called Meijer (pronounced Meyer). My friend works at one and said the name is German when I asked because I thought it was pronounced "Merger".

(first of all, i'm dumb, second, read until the end)
nope, down here on the caos of brazil, i lived mostly with ntsc my man
not a single pal television or console made its way here outside of weird imports
and the crt i own that is older than me is also ntsc (and mono !)
edit: i did a short google research
and down here we dont simply use pal
we use pal-m, that is, a freaking 60hz pal, cause our power lines run at 60hz
this explains why i didnt ever notice a diference between ntsc and our pal-m
sure thing is, Brazil is a exotic place with weird tech and minds

i remember i had sonic 2 and the cardrige design was different
    Niemeijer is dutch/nederland
In Germany we right Meier/Mayer...not used the j or i dont know this

Most of the sega consoles sold in 90s Russia were Chinese fakes, of course there were original ones, but Chinese ones were everywhere, the only original console on sale was snes, which lost in sales to mega drive/genesis.

What is the difference between this and the one shaped like a Genesis cartridge? I was visiting home in the Philippines and my brother living there had a bunch of old games he no longer needed, so I decided to take some of them with me. One of them was a gold label Sonic 3 cartridge similar to what's in this video, but with the form factor of a genesis cartridge. Is it just a more common variant or something?

Hi, friend. I have that version with small differences on the cover: mine has the most centered image with the black squares, it does not have the MD in the gold logos, nor does it have the circle that says pal, and on the back it lacks the date. The rest is the same except for the lack of the manual. I'm from Spain but here I don't remember that similar versions were sold

I love these mega drive asia releases but man they are expensive as hell!! Some how I managed to get some locally in Europe for next to nothing from people who did not know better. I also got CIB Japanese MD1, the console had a sticker of some Belgian import games store (I mean it was sold brand new in the 90s in an import store) one of the games had a sticker of a similar German import store. I've seen some people sharing scans of that store advertisment selling pc engine games as well. Pretty cool these stores existed back then!
By the way some of these Asian MD releases are NTSC as well, NTSC for Taiwan and PAL for HK I think
