How to Write a Prescription as a Nurse Practitioner in Ontario 💊

- Hey guys! I've been doing prescriptions during clinical and in class so I thought I would share the basics of writing a prescription. There are 8 elements needed on all prescriptions that are written by an NP. All of the information is based on the CNO NP Practice Standards. I included 3 rx examples so it makes more sense 😀
⏲️ TIMECODES
0:44 - CNO prescription requirements
2:48 - What NPs cannot prescribe in Ontario
3:12 - First Rx example
4:03 - Second Rx example (calculations included)
7:20 - Third Rx example

WHO AM I
I'm Tania, a nurse practitioner student living and going to school in Ontario Canada. I've been a registered nurse for 7 years. I made this channel because I found that there was a lack of content relating to Canadian NP students on UA-cam so I decided to create this channel not only to document my journey through school but also to provide some helpful information to aspiring NP students 😊

Thank you for this ma'am!!!
No problem ☺️👍🏻
Hi, love your videos!! Currently in my last year of the PHCNP program (Ontario), taking AHAD and THERAPEUTICS. Your videos are super helpful :) Just passed by head to toe with flying colors and watched your video before studying.
OMG that's amazing!! So happy I can help you get through NP school in some way! The struggle is real. Good luck on your last year 🙂
looking forward to more videos :) @@npstudentchronicles3652
Hi Tania,
I wanted to thank you for this video. As an international dentist preparing for the board exams of Canada, i think this video is extremely valuable. Eventhough the fundementals of prescription do not change internationally, Sig. and Disp. sections differ slightly and you explain them very clearly.
Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes I find the fundamentals are the same. Good luck on your exams 😊
great video, well done to you lovely💗💗💗
Thank you ☺
I know this is off topic, can you explain the diagnostic statement - and maybe expand on that vs the differential diagnosis ?
Hey Tania,
Question: is there any reason to not write BID/TID/QID… as opposed to writing out twice/three times a day?
I understand it’s easier for the patient to understand what the script means, but because it’s going to be filled by the pharmacy who understands medical shorthand/abbreviations why do you write it out long form?
Is there a rationale specifically for NPs in Ontario vs physicians or is this just the way that it is taught in school and you can choose later?
Thanks for another great video 😀!
Hi! Awesome observation 😄 You/the NP can absolutely write BID or TID on the script. I just didn't write it for simplicity. So you can write "take twice (BID) a day", similarly as I wrote "take once a day as needed (PRN) for pain" for dilaudid. As long as it's clear for the patient, then you can for sure include medical abbreviations. Hope that makes sense 😀.
Hi, do NPs in Canada need to collaborate with a doctor when prescribing or not needed? It is needed here in Australia
Hi! NPs in Canada can prescribe independently, no need for an MD 🙂
Hi, just wondering how would you prescribe 1 month supply at a time but for a total of 6 months?
Hi! I would write Mitte: 30 days, Repeats: 5....that would give you a total of 6 months. Hope that helps!
@@npstudentchronicles3652 Thant was helpful. Thank you so much.
May I know the name of the college /university that you have been studying..?
Hi! I'm going to the University of Ottawa 🙂
