I remember Alpha protocol i thought that game was underrated granted I know the game has tons of problems and bugs and glitches galore however the story in the game itself was actually tons of fun and very interesting as a RPG fan your choices actually effected the story which made me happy but other then that it was actually a disappointment.
Yeah, it was a fine game; ambitious in what it tried to do, kinda clunky and unremarkable in what it actually did, but with enough of its goals showing through to make me wish it'd gotten more time to be polished. That said, though, how the hell did the game go through 2 years of development with seemingly nobody having a clue what the hell they were trying to make? щ(゜ロ゜щ)
So glad I bought this on Steam years ago. I played it during the pandemic and ended up loving it, even though it's clearly unfinished and unpolished. A very unique RPG that deserved more.
After my mum died over Christmas this was the first game I played. With my estranged brother too. It was the best fun we'd ever had together in the 20 something years we'd known each other. Literally a diamond in the rough.
I was literally just thinking about this game last night. I still dont think there's any game that comes close to the impact of your choices in this game.
@@vcdonovan5943 I actually did it last fall.. And in a very weird way: I put a random number generator beside me and set it from 1 to 4. Every time there was a dialogue choice to pick i took a number from the generator and that was my choice (1-professional, 2-ruthless, 3-suave, 4-action-when-prompted). A very weird run for sure 😆
Wishlist dream: Obsidian, now owned my Microsoft, tells them they want the Alpha Protocol license back from Sega. Next year at E3, Alpha Protocol is announced as a reboot for next gen systems 😳😳😳
I hope this happens too. Sega isn't really doing too much these days, and Microsoft would definitely give Obsidian the time and resources they would need to do a proper reboot.
Hands down, one of the best gamer ever made. Not a hyperbolic statement either. It's one of those games that truly blur the lines between quality, talent, gameplay, and what makes a good game.
Played the game a few years ago for the first time and quite enjoyed it, it was like Mass Effect with espionage theme. Too many people who get disappointed with Alpha Protocol seem to play like an action game, but you really should play it first and foremost as a stealth game.
It can be played as both action and stealth. I mean there are armor and skill sets for combat, stealth, and gadgetry (which is the equivalent of the standard warrior, thief, mage RPG paradigm). The whole point is to allow players their own approach to missions. It's just that none of the play styles really work all that well. AP is janky, but it's also imminently playable.
One of my favorite game! It had everything: cool characters, a loooot of freedom and possibilities how to complete level, interesting original story, billions of dialogues, even sex, and you could be anyone in this game. And what do we have nowadays as RPG?...
All I can say is that I LOVED Alpha Protocal. Everything was great, from the story, characters, action, choices you make outfitting your character, choices you make in dealing with other characters and the many endings. Its just a great , enthralling game.
Wish big companies would be more willing to take risks with small capital projects of beloved franchises. Obviously a big AAA release is a gamble, but not everything needs to be a hundred million dollar game to reward and secure a loyal fanbase, versus seeing so many franchises showcased on this channel be just left abandoned.
I heard about how this game was a disaster shortly after playing it, and I didn't really get it. It's got some problems, but for what it is I had a whole lot of fun with it.
some of the devs that worked for this game actually worked on CP2077. CP2077 leaks also pretty much reveal the game supposed to be a third person game until Adam Badowski radically changed it to first person focus game.
I remember being disappointed with the final mission. Up to this point, all the "your choice matter" stuff was done really well. But at the end, suddenly, all your allies but one you choose disappear, and all the contacts you met and kept alive are irrelevant unless you go for one specific ending. Felt a bit lame.
Id love to see Obsidian give this series another go at it, with optimized gameplay systems. The story alone is worth the effort & the idea of a Spy role playing game is still a unique idea that to my knowledge hasnt been done by anyone else besides them.
I absolutely love AP and played through it 3 times. It's the definition of a diamond in the rough, but there's so much good in there that all the jank somehow doesn't bother me.
To be fair, Alpha Protocol was way ahead of its time. It tried so much to copy and paste with other spy games. I mean, Ubisoft has Splinter Cell (but they still kept silent on a new game), Square has Deus Ex, and IO Interactive have Hitman. The problem with Alpha Protocol was that SEGA didn’t promote the game properly because of poor marketing and lackluster sales killed any hopes of a sequel, but it’s still a fun game that has been overlooked and hasn’t been talked about since.
Thank you for these videos! I'm not much of a gamer, so I always learn a lot thanks to these mini-documentaries! Your hard work is highly appreciated!! 👍
Something that I though was cool in that game was the addition of extra dialogue option in the opening section depending if it was your first playthrough where the protagonist is acting like a newbie who wasnt sure what to say, but if you have already beaten the game once and your doing a second playthrough the new dialogue option are him acting like an expert and answering questions like a pro
i remember being SOO hyped for this game. It was a pretty big let down, but I really wish someone else would attempt this idea, of an RPG spy game. Getting to create my own jason bourne is such a cool concept, and to live out my own series of action packed stealth action movies.
I’ve said it since 50k, I don’t know how the fuck this channel dosent have millions and millions of views. It’s this type of professionalism and investigative mini documentaries on niche games snd their development is literally what I pay internet for.
I still remember how awesome this game was. Played it a couple of times over the years, coming back to it for its awesome dialogue system and kinda fun gameplay. The pistol is super busted BTW, just so you know!
This game is such a hidden gem, literally no one in my area had heard of it and I picked it up in a bargain bin somewhere maybe 2 years after it came out, anyways I told a bunch of friends about it and they all grabbed it and literally every single one enjoyed it
I got this game on sale many years after it was relevant, and fell in love with it. I was appalled to hear it never received a sequel after finishing my 4th playthrough.
I liked this game for what it was. It wasn’t perfect, but during this video Several clips shown I immediately remembered the location and what I was doing there . I guess the game stuck with me more than I thought
One of the few games I remember playing where the lackluster technical performance just couldn't obscure how interesting and awesome the ideas and writing were. I didn't know the game had been pulled from stores, thankfully I still have it through Steam (and hopefully always will)
Man I wish I could have gotten this on PC. This far along the community would have fixed all the bugs and issues, enhanced the textures, perfected the gameplay controls, and perhaps more.
I bought a retail PC version of the game on Amazon Canada for like 25$. The latest patch/update removes the online activation, so you can play without the disc.
I’m a big Deus Ex fan, so of course I checked this out. But due to middling reviews, I waited until it was cheap. I ended up liking it way more than the reviewers. (I was a reviewer myself at the time)
It honestly kills me that no one has thought to make another spy RPG game. Like Mass Effect is pretty much already a decent blue print. Just throw in some splinter cell/MGS Elements along with a strong RPG like story and it would be gold. The potential is insane. I hope they atleast release on backwards compatability now that Obsidian is part of xbox.
Obsidian is obviously the best in the business and my personal favorite game developer I mean just look what they did with the fallout new Vegas and just over a year of development time it breaks my heart because I feel like if given more time and money the obsidian games that came out could’ve been so much greater and the ones that got canceled or basically counseled sound like they could’ve been some of the greatest RPG experiences of all time I’m honestly glad they got bought out by Microsoft hopefully they don’t treat them like rare
A part near the end where you have to fight a guy sniping at you in a tower is burned into my brain because of how difficult it was having not specced into combat much
What an amazing game, had tons of fun with it and ironically just like VtM: Bloodlines, has an awful combat but amazing dialogue and even better it actually has choices that matter.
I've played this game so many times when it came out and not a single playthrough ever felt the same. I've even tried to copy a previous playthrough and one outcome or instance would always be different. I honestly don't know how they did it. Almost felt like magic.
It is a shame. This game had awful janky gameplay. But the narrative choice system STILL hasn't been matched by modern games a decade later. This game had SO MUCH replay value. Other RPGs only track whether you are killing bunnies or saving them. But the way Alpha Protocol tracts the choices you make directly, your style of play and relationships with characters and dynamically integrates them into everything that happens makes the narrative choice systems in Bioware games look like a joke
Shame we're not getting games like this now. How about doing a video on thee tragedy of Aliens Vs Predator 2 2001? A great game that is not available on Steam or current consoles. Nor did it get a proper sequel.
To be fair to Sega, you've got to give them some props for even taking the risk. Many publishers would never even have given a project like this a second look. It's the kind of game that maybe only a publisher like Focus might greenlight even today. This video also sent me checking through my cupboards to see if I still own it, and I do...it still has its 2 for £10 sticker on it.
I just finished Alpha Protocol as a recruit on hard mode with an assault rifle + pistol & it was super fun coz of how hilariously dumb all the enemies were but the story was incredible, never have I ever felt more satisfied with a game's ending where the hero saves the girl, kicks the villain in the crotch & rides off into the sunset.
I had a couple of fun playthroughs of this game years ago. I recommended it to a friend who got deadsaved halfway through twice and then never tried again.
The only problem I had with Alpha Protocol was the one way doors which couldn't be identified and could never be travelled back through. You could miss out on finding things just because you couldn't tell the difference between a regular door and a "next area" door.
Finally got around to playing this game. It has so many issues but the good is so good it outweighs them all for me. The amount of ways the game acknowledged choice is incredible
There seems to be a sudden interest in Alpha Protocol as of late. This isn't the first time I've heard people talking about it in the last couple of weeks. Heck, it even made me dust off the ol 360 for another Veteran playthrough! My last save file was dated 2012! I must have completed this game at least half a dozen times. I honestly never encountered any of the bugs and glitches people go on about. Sure, it's janky. But Alpha Protocol is imminently playable. And brilliant, to say the least. It really is a shame that distribution of it has effectively been suspended. I hope SEGA can work out its licensing issue. AP is really one of a kind, and it's a wonder that there aren't any more spy thriller RPGs like it. With Microsoft behind Obsidian now, maybe we can hope for a proper sequel or successor some day with even more of the depth of scope that a proper RPG spy thriller deserves.
This is one of my FAVORITE games of all time, besides the horrible gameplay feel. Its a big shame all this that happend during development... GREAT VIDEO!
Man I need to finally play this game, it’s right down my alley. I’ve had it on my Steam backlog for years, just need to stop being distracted by the new shiny. I’ve heard great things about the writing and RPG portions (shooting and other gameplay? Not so much). I also wish Obsidian would have finished their Alien RPG, that one looked great for an Alien fan like myself.
god i was so happy when i found a copy for the 360 in my local supermarket, i still have it and is one of my most treasured game due to it's rarity. I just knew the game was a gem despite all the horrible reviews
This was such a shame, Alpha Protocol was a good game despite its many flaws, and had an awesome amount of unfulfilled potential. It could have opened a door to another genre and kind of RPG, one that still to this day barely exists in a few examples (like Vampire: Bloodlines), none of which are actually about spies.
I remember getting this game! It was a gift and I had a shitty PC so when I played it I thought the problems were my PC not the game so I enjoyed it. Played it several times. Maybe I will download it again and play it once more.
I loved this game. It taught me the value of headshot-hunting pistol sneaking, and was a fun ride overall. I'm glad I got it on Steam while I could, since my PS3 is broken. I'll always hope for a sequel, but I know Sega will never make good choices outside of the Japanese market.
One of the best games i have ever played. I never had any issues with the gameplay. Sure it is not the best gameplay system when it comes to combat and stealth but at the same time it is hardly game breaking. And if we want to talk about bugs/glitches we should take a look on the games of today. Myriads of game breaking bugs and glitches upon release. Story telling is excellent. Intelligence gathering and profiling are excellent, characters are excellent. Choices matter. Alliances matter. Alpha Protocol was a great game. Sadly...one that was criminally underrated. I hope we get this game remade with some gameplay fixes and with the story and characters intact. Cause this is one of the best games ever made. And it is sad that it does not get the recognition it deserves.

That said, though, how the hell did the game go through 2 years of development with seemingly nobody having a clue what the hell they were trying to make? щ(゜ロ゜щ)
@@Sara_Feingold good question I wonder about that as well
So glad I bought this on Steam years ago.
@@FrensisR sounds like a fun second play through type of thing. how did this turn out ?

Wishlist dream: Obsidian, now owned my Microsoft, tells them they want the Alpha Protocol license back from Sega. Next year at E3, Alpha Protocol is announced as a reboot for next gen systems 😳😳😳
I hope this happens too. Sega isn't really doing too much these days, and Microsoft would definitely give Obsidian the time and resources they would need to do a proper reboot.
Just make new espionage franchise with same style.
Not quite what you described, but Alpha Protocol is at least available on GOG now!
Too many people who get disappointed with Alpha Protocol seem to play like an action game,
but you really should play it first and foremost as a stealth game.
than obsidion should make it a stelath focus game instead
It can be played as both action and stealth. I mean there are armor and skill sets for combat, stealth, and gadgetry (which is the equivalent of the standard warrior, thief, mage RPG paradigm). The whole point is to allow players their own approach to missions.
It's just that none of the play styles really work all that well. AP is janky, but it's also imminently playable.
Damn I wish this got a remake
The meme potential is out of the roof
Remake for the memes! Good enough reason as ever to buy right xD?
@@psycho-analyticgamer7452 the best reason
I had no idea this game was no longer sold. I'm so glad I got my steam copy years ago.
Played it a few years back, actually enjoyed it a lot.
I really like this game, despite its many shortcomings! I hope we get a game similar to it soon.
Same, the awesome characters, player choice, and the amount of content that can be missed even through 3 different playthroughs.
It's a good day when gvmers uploads.
If it could get a nice, hefty budget for a sequel, Obsidian and MS would have a great exclusive. One of my all time favorites.
Alpha Protocol was like Mass Effect 1.
Imagine what Alpha Protocol 2 could have been like.
That’s actually a pretty apt comparison
Mass effect 2 was where the franchise hit its stride
@@ryanwallace983 before the dark times for BioWare
Just before the EA empire
@@vcdonovan5943 what you got against Mass Effect 2?
@@AncestorEmpire1 Great story. Lousy gameplay.
@@vcdonovan5943 better gameplay than mass effect 1. You were lucky to hit anything in that game until you got to rating X weapons.
I really loved this game played it many times definitely loved the story
Have this game on PC, Xbox and PS3. Play through it once a year. It's one of my favorite games of all time.
This game is such a hidden gem, literally no one in my area had heard of it and I picked it up in a bargain bin somewhere maybe 2 years after it came out, anyways I told a bunch of friends about it and they all grabbed it and literally every single one enjoyed it
gvmers really help a lot on choosing what game to play next on the backlog pile
If they remake this game now, with current graphic and polish... it would be a blast, Allright!
The timing on this video for me is out of this world, this game brings back memories
Honestly I gotta say it's my favorite Obsidian game. NV is neat and all, but maaaaan my boy Thorton is just amazing.
Have to say I love the narration. I subbed the channel because of it. Alpha Protocol is one of my all time favorites!
Shame we're not getting games like this now.
How about doing a video on thee tragedy of Aliens Vs Predator 2 2001? A great game that is not available on Steam or current consoles. Nor did it get a proper sequel.
This is one of my all time favorite games. Despite all the bad stuff, it's a great game. Just imagine what it could've been.
I really enjoyed Alpha Protocol I wish they would have continued the series and ironed out the rough spots instead of giving up.
Japanese publishers tend to be a little less risk adverse than western ones. They're especially lenient when it comes to RPGs it seems.
I just finished this game a few days ago it was a great game even with it's issues!
Really good game, I've finished it twice and now I want another round. Story and choices are great.
Oh wow. I love this game and Obsidian. Played through it numerous times to get the platinum trophy and it was lots of fun every time.
You could miss out on finding things just because you couldn't tell the difference between a regular door and a "next area" door.
in my nostalgia i swear alpha protocol looked like blacklist back in the day
This channel is underrated, glad i found it when it was under 100k subs
Finally got around to playing this game. It has so many issues but the good is so good it outweighs them all for me. The amount of ways the game acknowledged choice is incredible
I love this game. I wish we would get a remaster, remake or sequel.
This series deserves a reboot
One of the few games that after beating I replayed immediately....At least 4x to see everything. Even still I don't think I did.
god i was so happy when i found a copy for the 360 in my local supermarket, i still have it and is one of my most treasured game due to it's rarity. I just knew the game was a gem despite all the horrible reviews
The most inaccurate game review AngryJoe has ever made
So glad to see I'm not the only person who actually liked this game!
History of both McGee's Alice/ Madness Returns, would be awesome ❤️
Id love if Microsoft bought the rights from Sega.
Exactly what I was about to post.
Expired music licenses.. ?
This was such a shame, Alpha Protocol was a good game despite its many flaws, and had an awesome amount of unfulfilled potential. It could have opened a door to another genre and kind of RPG, one that still to this day barely exists in a few examples (like Vampire: Bloodlines), none of which are actually about spies.
I remember me and my cousin were super excited for this game because of the television series burn notice.
Game was janky but criminally underrated
This was always a hand that I wanted to play when I first read about it on this gaming mag. I think this game was beyond it's time.
I would love to see you cover the conflict series from back in the day, I loved that series
Now one on the Kane & Lynch IP. Underrated AF especially Dog Days.
I remember getting this game! It was a gift and I had a shitty PC so when I played it I thought the problems were my PC not the game so I enjoyed it. Played it several times. Maybe I will download it again and play it once more.
Thanks for doing this, this game will forever be my guilty pleasure game.
