  • Black shift dresses are usually pretty easy to find at the thrift store! BUT the cool thing about this tutorial is that you can do this to the bottom of ANY dress that you like! ♥

The hardest part for me would be that that dress was really cute to start with and I'd be scared to ruin it.
Ps your thrift stores are 1000000 times better than the thrift stores near me

Annika!!! I recreated this dress using a thrifted black dress and an old layered skirt that was white. This was my first ever time using a sewing machine and my first ever big project. I was so proud of the outcome of my dress. I will say, it is really hard to find a non stretchy dress at any thrift shop though and seeing as I was using a 50-60+ year old sewing machine that only has one setting and is extremely sensitive I just ended up cutting out rectangles and ironing them on with iron strips. Everyone at my school was so amazed by it. I love you channel so much and it is what really got me thinking about sewing more and more. I have a few more projects of yours I want to recreate as well but I just wanted to comment and at least tell you how well you are doing and how easy it is to follow your videos to create the clothes you do. 😊

"Where did Make Thrift Buy #19 - Rude Cat Tee go?"
As I'm getting a couple of these same questions, I'll address it here.
The challenge that I was set was originally by a company who wasn't very happy about me recreating their idea, so I had to take down the video and it won't be coming back (sorry if you never got to watch it!)
I gave full credits to the company for the design in my video, and urged everyone to support them financially *if they could* - not everyone can afford to spend $34 (+ shipping + taxes) on a t-shirt, after all - but after asking them to watch my video and explaining the idea behind the Make Thrift Buy series, they still weren't happy, so I asked them if they wanted me to take the video down, and they said yes. But I totally respect their decision - it's their design, after all! I guess that I now know where that line is that I shouldn't cross when doing this series, so that is a valuable lesson for me.
But don't worry! It's not going to stop me from making Make Thrift Buy videos in the future - in fact, a new episode 19 (with a TOTALLY different item of clothing) is just around the corner ;) And I will be more careful with the challenges I choose to do in the future - I'll stick to more generic/widespread designs by very BIG designers, and things which are sold-out-and-never-coming-back! (Keep that in mind if you're suggesting clothing for me to do!) :)
ps Please don't send any angry/hateful messages to the company if you did get to watch the original episode 19, coz that isn't cool. It was totally within their right to ask me to take the video down. Love you all ♥

Damn, I saw the MTB episode 19 there the night it was uploaded but was going to watch it the next day. Wish I saw it before you had to take it down :( but I can't wait for the next installment of Make Thrift Buy! You've inspired me to make my own patterns instead of buying them 😄

I thrifted black and white cloth and a black pencil skirt and made this. I call it my "Piano Skirt" and i've had so many people compliment me on it. I'm helpless with a sewing machine, so i sewed mine by hand. it's so fun to have a skirt that shows off one of my passions (i play piano) and this video made it super easy to make. Thank you , Annika!

Glad the video is up. I admire your skill, but if I may offer a suggestion...diagonally trimming the corners on the "piano keys" before turning them right-side out again, gently pushing the corners into points and then ironing so they are neat rectangles would have given you a more uniform, higher-end look.
I cannot wait to try this! 😎
