      Art speaks to the soul! Art tells a story as it visually unfolds! Art is meant to elevate and enhance a space! Let's talk about "Original Art vs Giclées" Originals are timeless and valuable investments that can be passed down as heirlooms but replicas and giclees aka prints or copies are not. Nevertheless, Yes! "Art holds a strong visual language to its Audience." 🎨🖌☺

    You mention buying original art. I collect art, but I realize everyone can’t afore Picasso so I’d like to offer another suggestion to the one you mentioned as where to find original art. You my want to look at art school. Many of them have student art sales. You never know, you may find a budding Jackson Pollock.

      I love that. I discovered that option just 2 years ago. It’s also very nice to discuss with the student/ budding artist during those fairs.

      I love looking at art from MFA student shows too, and there are other budget friendly options as well--but be careful of those unlimited editions!

    Such a great video! Well explained. One thing people don't realize about thrifted
    Art is sometimes it is filthy! I see UA-camrs buy a vintage piece, take it home and hang it straight on the wall. You would be shocked to see how beautiful a piece really is under the grime. Watercolors and pastels can't be washed but acrylic and oil paintings can most definitely be cleaned.

      That is SO true!!!! I dug through vintage paintings last weekend on a trip and by the time I was finished, I was covered in dirt! Lol, all in good fun, but I was happy to get my hands washed soon after!

      I couldn't agree more. I had one wall with 6 identical frames (they told a story). Even though the frames were identical, there was a slight variance with the location of the hanging hooks; I didn't notice that until after I put all the hooks on the wall and hung the pictures. I ended up with multiple unnecessary holes which could have been avoided using Ashley's method of paper cut-outs and marking the location of the hooks.

    We have Art after Dark the first Friday of the month and many art fairs we were we live. I rarely buy in antique stores since they are super expensive in our area. But the art fairs have phenomenal artists at great prices. I also always buy art when we travel abroad or state side. My adult kids are now into only buying original. We all lean towards modern contemporary, photography and landscapes. I have told my 4 kids to go thru house and tag the art you want when I no longer want it or pass on. It’s been so fun to see what they have chosen. I just gifted my youngest son a huge original piece that was in my living room that I no longer want. Had I not asked my kids to tag, I would have never known he loved this piece. Win,win for both of us. 🎉

    Hi Ashley. Thanks for sharing your lovely home and the advise here.
    Just to confirm - the size of the artwork should be AT LEAST 2/3 of the size of the furniture, not EXACTLY 2/3.
    Soliciting for your advise, which size of artwork for the living room is better, considering these measurements:
    Length of sofa: 78-79"
    Height of sofa from floor: 36"
    Space from edge of sofa to ceiling molding: 55"
    Artwork sizes to choose:
    (W) 28" x (L) 56"
    OR
    (W) 32" x (L) 64"
    Thanks, Ashley.
    Appreciate taking time to share your advise. ❤
    Buying the pricey artwork, so should make this right.
    32:42

    • @ashleychilders
      @ashleychilders  Рік тому

      The 2/3 rule is just a guideline. If the art is vertical I'd for sure go with the 32"W piece, if you have the wall height to support 64"H. If the pieces can be hung horizontally, either size would work. If you hang vertically, you can also fill the wall space on each side of the art with sconces. I love adding a single large, impactful piece of art above a sofa flanked by sconces. Such a sophisticated and finished look. Good luck!!!

    Thank you for a very useful video. That was great! I love that you framed a scarf! Such an unusual but wonderful idea. I have so many odd frames that I've been collecting and I really need to do something with them. I don't have any artwork yet though, but it will be fun creating a gallery wall. I love mixing shapes and stacking. I actually took an interior design course years ago, but it was nice to watch your video as a refresher since I don't work as an interior designer.
    For someone on a budget - they could buy an inexpensive art book from a charity shop (thrift store) and cut the image. Art prints can be very expensive and sometimes you can't even buy the print/art that you want. Postcards are a great choice too and super cheap. Art gallery shops would be best to find great art postcards, either modern or classic.

    Ashley I’d love a close up and description of the mirror doors on your cabinets both sides of the fireplace. The mirrors appear to have a vintage aged effect which I think would be lovely, straight up mirrored doors just wouldn’t cut it for me. ❤️❤️❤️ your channel, so glad I found you on UA-cam!

    • @ashleychilders
      @ashleychilders  10 місяців тому +1

      First of all, thank you so much for watching and for your sweet comment! The mirrored doors are created by what’s called Églomisé, it’s a French term for gilding the back of glass to create a mirrored finish. It’s achieved by applying individual sheets of gold or silver leafing to the back of glass then antiquing it. Lots of time they’ll also be a hand painted design on the reverse of the glass prior to the leafing creating encased art. It’s my absolute favorite type of mirror and something you usually only find on antiques, but I include it in my designs when I can!

    • @soniabanwell6670
      @soniabanwell6670 10 місяців тому +1

      Ok I know what that is actually. I have numerous UA-cam videos on the process and was planning on making a antiqued mirror using decor stamps, stencils mirrored and gold spray paint. It’s a case of so many craft /decor ideas and so little time. Hopefully you can do a close of your cabinet in a future video if you haven’t already? Many thanks for your inspirational content!

    Great tips and info on how to do a gallery wall. I learned a couple of new things. My style is more colorful so I think it is even more important to coordinate a bit on the frame/styles and definitely do as you mentioned, integrate other types of art. I think having a theme or a particular vibe or color combo gives it cohesiveness so it doesn't become an incoherent blur of confusion on the wall.

    It looks nice but it's a repeated style. All the new houses tend to have this approach because all designers propose it. The artworks are "safe", monochromatic tiny sketches and indifferent, you place them and never care to look at them again. The big one's better if are abstract (lines, geometrical forms, repeated motives. Most of "sculptures" are as if they come from paleolithic age or the industrial (cylidric glass vases, chains). Important is the shape and the sense that all pieces are expensive modern or primitive art. What about all the other art movements? I have paintings of classic style, portraits of intense oil colour and i'd love to frame big bouguereau's or Botticelli's prints. How can "modern" style embrace them? How i make them look less heavy?

      I love all types of art, watercolor, charcoal, oil paintings (probably my favorite!). If you want to make large oil paintings feel less heavy I'd opt for a clean lined solid wood frame with a beautiful gilded finish. Chic and sophisticated, but still timeless! ❤️

    There is so much going on that the eye does not know where to land. I think you need to edit.

    Somehow, I just knew you would always opt for white....the room with the mocha walls make you look like a little person

      Just because it’s not your taste, no need to be offensive.
