Learn how to make a delightfully simple yet breathtakingly beautiful DIY countdown calendar from just one sheet of 12" x 12" cardstock!
December first means it's time to begin the countdown to Christmas! And one of my favorite ways to do this is to put out advent and countdown calendars! I thought it would be fun to make a super simple countdown calendar that anyone could do regardless of skill or time. So today we are making a crazy easy DIY Christmas Countdown that looks like a snowy Christmas town!
I appreciate every subscriber. It's free and easy to subscribe -- just click here: bit.ly/sub2jennifer
MATERIALS LIST (contains my affiliate links):
* One 12" x 12" sheet of smooth white cardstock, high quality (I'm using the white side of a sheet of cardstock from this pack of paper: amzn.to/2svjBQG
* (Optional) One 12" x 12" sheet of wax paper, vellum, or copy paper (to diffuse light) - amzn.to/2OSFWiA
* (Optional) One 12" x 12" sheet of contrasting cardstock (alternative diffuser) - amzn.to/2srqWR6
* (Optional) Tacky spray or tacky glue if you put a second sheet of paper behind your Christmas Town - amzn.to/2spam4i
* (Optional) LED tealights (to illuminate from behind) - amzn.to/2OXX0Uf
* (Optional) Weeding tool - amzn.to/37LMbNT
* A way to cut the cardstock (I used the amazing Cricut -- jennifermaker.com/which-cricu... )
* My free SVG cut files (Design # 166) (available in my free resource library at jennifermaker.com/library )
Step 1: Get my free design
Download the DIY Christmas Town Countdown design from my free resource library at jennifermaker.com/library
Step 2: You can cut the DIY Christmas Countdown with a good craft knife, but be prepared for that to take some time. I cut mine using my Cricut cutting machine and it was WAY easier.
Upload the SVG to your software and it's ready to cut! If you're cutting just the building layer and not the back layer you can hide it.
Use a really good quality paper to cut this, as there are a lot of little cuts and you'll notice the issues with bad quality cardstock a lot more.
It will take about 35 minutes to cut the main building layer, so just set it to cut and go do something else ... like put up some lights or decorate your tree! Let your Cricut do the hard work.
Step 3: Once your Christmas Town is cut, unload your mat, flip the mat over onto your work surface, and gently peel the mat away from the cut cardstock. This will minimize curling and ripping. Mind the doors, as they could tear off if you remove it too quickly. If the DO tear off, just reattach them with some tape or something. But I think you'll be fine if you're careful.
Step 4: If you're in the mood, there's another layer in the file you can cut from a diffusing paper (such as wax paper, vellum or copy paper) or from a contrasting cardstock (any color). This layer goes behind the Christmas Town, and you can use if you want. But it's not necessary.
If you choose to do this, just glue the back layer to the Christmas Town building layer. You can use tacky glue, or even Tacky spray. If you use spray, open the doors on your buildings and spray the back of the buildings, then close them again and attach the backs -- doing it this way prevents adhesive from getting on the backs of the doors and keeping them from opening later.
I think it works best if you close the doors before you attach the backs!
Tip: Keep your building backs on the mat and remove them one by one so you know exactly which building it fits!
Step 5: Fold the Christmas town, building by building. There are dashed lines where you need to fold to make it easier to fold them straight. Like an accordion.

I'm new to the Cricut groups of very talented people. I have been reading and watching everything I can to learn how to use my cricut maker. My daughter and her two very little girls are putting alot of faith in me to make some wonderful new crafts. I have been a sewer for over 40 years and looking forward to adding this crafting tool to my creative side of things. Thank you Jennifer for all your wonderful videos.
You are so welcome, Jan! I hope they aren't putting so much faith into you that this really fun craft turns into something that isn't fun anymore! Because it is!!! 😉😍
You are so creative and generous to share your designs. Thank you
Thanks Cheryl! I enjoy sharing with other crafters!

What a great project! So intricate and yet it only uses one sheet of paper. Awesome! I love the blue color background, but I also love the way the light shines through the wax paper.

Jennifer, after seeing this this morning, I got right up and made it for my grandson who was here for Thanksgiving break. As you said it was relatively easy just took sometime to cut. The first page was easy but the wax paper didn't cut well the first time and was the same the second time, but i was able to make do. He loved it! Thank you so much for all that you do. I love all of your videos.
I am so happy that you were able to make it for your grandson and that he loved it. We all love making things that our loved ones love, right! 😊
