Hey Kelly...It's easy to see that you have already learned it....in this video as well as in a phenomenal rebound from emergency surgery. Sooner or later, somewhere between Springer and Katahdin, all thru-hikers learn it. And what we learn doesn't just hang around as head knowledge, but settles deep down in one's heart and soul, where the struggles of life are fought and won. Where they are sometimes lost.
We learn that all the physical preparation, the running, work-outs, though all of that can be helpful, is not a guarantee that we'll make it to Katahdin. By the time we touch that sign on Katahdin's peak, we've learned that the most formidable opposition on the trail isn't the weather, or the ascents and descents, or the bugs, or always trying to adjust but never getting adjusted, or trying to find comfort when you're always uncomfortable.
We learn that the greatest'' foe we face is our own self. It's that inner voice that says: "You can't do this. It's too far, too hard, too cold, too wet...too everything." We discover that what really gets us to Katahdin is what is in one's heart. It's not food or clothing or gear issues that stop us, but rather the inability to overcome the greatest of all obstacles: one's own self.
Maybe that's why touching the sign at Katahdin is so life changing and meaningful. Maybe it's because we've learned that when you can't... you can. Then you know why the journey was worth it, and that in the end, the greatest battle of all is with our own self, our most difficult foe. Yet with God's strength it's a battle that can be won. Maybe that's the best "trail magic" of all and the essence and crux of the entire experience.
Hey Kelly, I know it's been a while but I hope you are doing well. I'm 55 with bad hips so I'm living vicariously through you. Thank you for sharing the beauty, fun, headache's and food along the way with us. You inspire us! 💜
Pink flowers are rhododendrons. Mountain laurel are white flowers. Orange flowers are flame azalea. Great time to be hiking for those blooms!
In Appalachia, some call rhododendrons "laurels" as a common name. Said to be more common in North Carolina, but called it that growing up in SW PA. Great comment noting the differences. Appreciated! :)
"Movement is Medicine!" Amen, you are so right! I'm 70 and have hiked 1200 miles of the AT. Its what keeps me young, healthy, and going strong. Keep moving!
You've got an "Army" of support behind you Kelly...stay strong and keep moving..R.
Love watching your videos. My wife and i have section hiked 800 miles from Ga to Central Virginia. It's neat to see places we have been and know what's coming. We've hiked in Spring, Summer, and Fall, so it's neat seeing some places at a much different type of year.
Keep going strong! We look forward to your videos.
Thanks for showing us all that you see on the trail even when you aren't feeling your best. I appreciate what you do.
FYI...the pink blooms are catawba rhododendron and the orange are flame azalea.
That is right. Mountain Laurel has white blossoms. When you were at the Cloudland Hotel, the largest growth of Catawba rhododendron in the world was on the other side of the paved parking lot. At that elevation, they don't bloom until the third week of June. Uncle Nick Grindstaff was a hermit who lived up there. He was from the area, but left as a young man. Something happened and he returned home. Some say it was a woman he loved and lost. He lived as a hermit the rest of his life but came down the mountain for supplies and people checked on him. Sorry you felt bad today. I hope you feel better tomorrow. I am enjoying your adventures.
Uncle Nick lived alone, but now thousands of hikers walk by his grave every year.
I thought those were rhododendrons :)
Catawba means "people of the river"...referring to the indigenous people of NC.
@@holstonusa Not all mountain laurel are white. There are white mountain laurel, pink mountain laurel, and white mountain laurel with pink pin-point dots. All these can be seen on the AT coming north out of the NOC in NC. But the mountain laurel blossom is more of a cluster of dainty little cups compared to the rhododendron blossom.
Legit living vicariously through you! I know it's been a year since this all was filmed but I can't help but love watching it! I found you o think because o watch Dixie's videos!
Kelly you are an inspiration for me to keep going as well Amen girl 🙏🏽 and thank you for the encouragement to keep going myself ❤
Hey Kelly... Your walnut snack reminded me of a version of the old trail-snack staple, Gorp (good old raisins and peanuts). You can mix walnuts, sliced almonds, peanuts cashews, etc. with chopped dates, chocolate chip morsels and raisins in any proportion you like while in a trail town and pack them out in Ziploc bags. Or, have someone at home mail them to you in carriable amounts. This snack satisfies the sweet craving, but more nutritiously than Snickers. Still carry some Snickers, though, because sometimes when the trail is hard, you just need some chocolate in your life.
I almost get emotional when you see the trail provide like that 💕 You were feeling crumby and the trail brings you beautiful flowers to brighten your day! 🌺🏵💕
It's spring.
I love your honesty and real-ness.
I just did a backpacking trip this weekend during “that time” and the whole time I got through it by telling myself if Kelly can hike with a massive cyst I can do this - also those disposable heat pads stuck to my lower abdomen haha but you are an inspiration! Like you said though, movement is so important!
Keep On Trekking Kelly!!!
Hike The Good Hike!!!
Thanks for sharing your adventure with all of us!
The ups and downs of the trail are what make it memorable and if you made it through what you did weeks ago, you can make it through anything. We all support you with good thoughts and prayer. Your attitude is in the right place, your body is strong and we are all behind you. Keep moving and just go with the flow, pun intended. :)
You rock Kelly Hayes. You should have your own camera crew! Hope to one day see ya on the AT I'll prob be going NOBO march 2022. You're very inspiring. Take care and god bless
Oh wow! The wild rhododendron and azaleas are gorgeous!!
I watch you every day you are doing Great . . keep on keeping on . . LoL
The orange flowers are wild azaleas, which we don't have in New York. I had a spectacular azalea (the only variety that will grow in cold NE) bloom last month, but they are purple, those orange ones are fantastic.
Great day Kelly.
You took a bad start and turned it into a very positive attitude. Good for you girl. The Brooks and Dunn didn't hurt either. 😉
You Toughed through it,Congrats!! Lets Go! Lets GO! You are doing GREAT!!!! Kick Ass. ATB
Good luck from England. I enjoy your videos.
Those pink flowers are Rhododendrons. The bright orange are called Flame Azaleas. You will also see light pink Azaleas. Mountain Laurel blooms a little later. They are light pink to white with a cup-like bloom. A saucer shaped flower about the size of a dime.
Haven't seen an update in 3 days... hope everything is okay!
Was just thinking the same thing
You are a Queen 👑 !!!!
Love your healthy eating and love of all things beautiful - those flowers were epic 💜💜
Morning Kelly! Beautiful section of trail today! I love those hiker boards. So glad you were able you find your joy and peace today. A lot of people would have given up down the rabbit hole of negativity. Those are rododendra. You will see many many more of them! Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.
-Grateful
Good for you for having a better day. I love what you’re doing. Love you Joanna California
Your a trooper, keep positive your a champion.
I appreciate your candour, your honesty and transparency are a breath of fresh air!!
Good video with some good views, so let's keep on hiking 🚶♀️😀💪
Great update! "Movement is Medicine" Amen to that! Who is your favorite UA-camr btw? Your videos are always an inspiration! Keep Strong!
Hey Kelly... Here's a suggestion for those times when there is a delay in posting videos and you need to let us know the situation. You could post a statement as a comment on the most recent video and pin it. That way your post would always be at the top of the comments where everyone can see it. This would help those who aren't on Instagram and Facebook and can't keep up with the "latest."
Glad to learn that you're OK and that the video delay issue is an internet problem and not a health problem. And thank you for all the hard work and sacrifice required to put out such pro-grade videos. Your efforts are most evident.
I put a couple video stories on here explaining what is going on a few days ago. :) sorry I had y’all worried. Hard for me to cover all my bases! Thank you for your support. A new video will be releasing in a few minutes.
@@kellyhays23 Thank you. I had already found the stories you're referring to by sorting the comments by "newest first" to find your explanation. Otherwise, your replies were so far down in the list that almost no one would see them without going to "newest first." That's what led me to suggest a pin post.
I'm not sure everyone realizes the enormous sacrifice you're making to film, edit and post videos daily, when you're butt tired and just want to crash, but the quality of work you're producing is beyond outstanding, and this channel can grow as much as you want it to. Kellymania continues to spread.
Go Kelly, GO!! You got this!
Great work
Keep the videos coming....
Would you talk about how you edit your videos....maybe routine for keep phones and battery packs charged?
Thanks...
Why aren’t the trails ever straight? I mean I imagine at times it should curve, but it’s always curvy through meadows/up hills through fields….
I have to admit , was laughing at your pain in the beginning of this video, lol, but after mentioning "movement is medicine" wow! thats good!.
Hope your feeling better. Hike on. Be well.
have fun and go wild
You got it done! 👏👏👏👏🤙
Suck It Up Buttercup has a new meaning. Stay strong.
Ugh periods. That first day is always the WORST. You killed it.
You got this girl you can do it ! 🙏🙏🙏
What cheerful thought (the tombstone) lol
Your resilience has really impressed me... not many more like you.. Keep on going rain or shine!!!
Amazing views and adventure!
Way to go sis so proud of you 👍
What music do you fellow hikers out there like if I get a chance to listen to some music when on my hiking trips I always choose music like Delta Parole or Guns N Roses, the rawness is the best with nature.
From my PhD from google I was able to learn about uncle nick.
Apparently he was a pretty smart and liked guy in his upbringing, but he liked being alone and lived on those grounds until one day one of his friends who came to check in on him found him dead.
Surgery probably isn't helping. You can complain, but only if you know we take that as prayer request.
Wed night at church...
Paster - before we brake up for prayer anybody have a prayer request?
Me - "please pray for Kelly, she is hicking the Appalachian trail and she got her period."
Congregation - (total laughter)
Me - "What? I'm serious"
"Movement is medicine". Yep!
Super curious on how you take care of that time of the month while on trail. Keep up the good work!
Just talked about this on an upcoming video!
If you ever hike through the Talladega Forest, there's random graves and cemeteries scattered throughout the Forest...
Be careful it appears that there is norovirus on trail ahead of you. Good Luck, Rick
I called Bob and Birty about your situation. Hope they were able to help and that you're feeling better.
Every step counts.👍🌲
Hey Kelly hope all is well, been 5 days no video my wife and i been following you from the start . Hope and pray its only camera issues.
Its internet issues. I don’t have enough internet or service to upload full HD videos at the length and quality I’ve been sharing in the current section of trail I’m at. Please be patient and understanding, I’m doing my absolute best to continue sharing my journey with everyone❤️
@@kellyhays23 Glad everything is alright. Was just checking on you this morning.
You are my favorite UA-camr. Good video.
Congrats on stepping up and making it happen Kelly!
There are many reasons why sometimes we just aren't feeling it and that's just part of reality. As you've found out, just gotta make it happen.
It may seem kinda corny, but there's an old John Denver song that I let take over my mind at times to focus my efforts.
"Some days are diamonds,
some days are stones,
sometimes the hard times
won't leave me alone.
Sometimes a cold wind
puts a chill in my bones,
Some days are diamonds.
Some days are stones."
Helps me with my perspective.
Best wishes and blessings as always!
Oh, yes, John Denver. How I miss him... like Elvis, Hank Williams Sr. and Glen Campbell, to list a few. Only a few writers could capture the emotions and drama of life experiences like John Denver could. His songs "Seasons of the Heart" and "It's Good to be Back Home Again," with that immortal line, "supper on the stove," will live with me forever.
Embrace the suck. It will get better. 🤗❤️
. . . totally earned - yes . . . I like the last frames of the video . . .
The orange flowers are Flame 🔥 Azaleas!
pretty awesome hike!
I may be overreacting but 5 days ago Kelly Hays was not feeling good at all while hiking 16 miles. She said she was on her period. Recently she had surgery for a cyst on her ovaries. She hasn't posted since day 26, the day she was having so much trouble. Does anyone know if she is alright?
Charles... Sort the comments by "newest first." Scroll down a few comments and you'll find her response. She's fine, but internet limitations are temporarily hindering new videos.
not all days are blue ribbon days.. but you made the most of the hand you were dealt for the day.
flame azalea, there my favorite too.
Flame Azealia (orange flowers).
Way to turn it around!!!
You go girl , that view was amazing . Great job staying positive and focused on your goals
I like going on these virtual hikes with you down the Appalachian Trail. Lots of fun!
Didn't see update in few days hope all is ok
I think you're doing great!
Do you have any plans for the PCT or CDT?
Yes😏
Pretty sure the blooming plants are wild rhododendrons
The PARK Rangers in NC taught me when hiking, trailing, camping to Always try and keep a small 4oz. bottle of 'TIDE or Dawn*' with you. Those 2 have ingredients that Will lift the oil off your skin. I've even taken a shower using it to get it off my skin (Never shower with hot water when washing it off, Cold or Cool water only so the oil doesn't enter your skin)....Im with ya though on being allergic. They've got pix of me with it at the Dermatology Dept. in Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta covering over 20% of my body (long story). When your at the/a Hostel, just ask for some from the Kitchen. I've done it. Facts. Stay Strong Grasshopper =)
Yes Dawn dish soap.......No hot water showering because oil can enter skin. ....interesting thanks great information.
@@carolynclark588 / Also, i renovate homes...if you're Ever working with 'Insulation'....I highly suggest wearing an $8 slip on painters cover, and Always take a cold shower after you finish. If you don't have one, wear longs sleeves, jeans, a mask (im Sure those are easy to find, haha), then take a VERY long Cold shower afterwards and wash those clothes separately. You'd think i was an Eagle Scout? ;)
hello ??? do any thru hikers walk the AT without staying in motels and hostel and such.??????
that makes it very expensive to get all the way to Maine
There are, but they’re not uploading videos to youtube. To be clear I think any way you get on the trail is cool, the AT changed me, just made me happy for anyone thats blessed enough to get to experience it. No matter how they do it.
thank you for the flash reply. happy trails. be well
asta Luego
Hang in there.
Sorry you were feeling like crap. I know the feeling. Blessings from Poland
Hope your okay. you haven't posted a video in Five days. I hit youtube every day hoping you uploaded your video. I hope your okay and still rocking the trail.
Praying you're well.
“Movement is medicine” So TRUE!
ANEN! Movement is the best medicine. Nature Heals! Whos your favorite UA-camr
Brooks and Dunn!
You got a great voice!
Grow in hollows along streams=8)
If I came across some native peaches for trail magic I would think that I died and went to Heaven. My favorite fruit but store bought ones are so horrible tasting now. They lack the flavor that peaches used to have. Southern Eastern peaches are the best. Lucky you !
You're killing me with all the healthy, delicious food you are eating. Gives me hope that it is possible to eat healthy and hike the miles. Tired of seeing hikers eat donuts, Pop Tarts, and other sugary foods. Actually makes me feel sorry for them because I know how unhealthy it is to eat that way. Six months of trail food won't kill you or damage your health permanently but I doubt that they eat any differently when they finish their hike. That is the problem, not that they stuff donuts in their face every day while hiking. It's more what they buy for town food in restaurants. Very few order salads and eat fresh fruits and veggies. Nice to see someone who cares about her health and is thinking about their old age before it's too late.
Please ! will somebody get this girl some trail magic ?
Really nice Flame azelas
Hoping everything is OK. Sending prayers and positive thoughts.
Kelly will you ever do Everest
You can sing.
Look out for them snakes
Movement is medicine. Amen! Also, nice job on Neon Moon😁
How did you activate your garmin mini?
Hope all is well you haven't posted a new video for a couple days
Sorry Kelly Guess I was wrong about a better day. Just remember God doesn't give you more than you can handle.
A bit counterintuitive, but coffee, if you have some, may help with cramps.
Hey just wake up.and get west. East is just a humidity bug fest.
Love it when you and another AT hiker “ Andrew Live life “ sing while hiking. Maybe you guys can meet up and do a duet. Ha ! Your voice is much better , but don’t tell him !
Does anyone know what happened to Kelly after day26? Is she alright?
Agree people do sit to much these days
You said you were listening to your favorite youtuber...care to share?
You got this!!!!!! The lord will guide you on your journey.
