While I agree that stepped motors are louder than brushless, I question if putting the mic on top of the servo motor was a fair sound comparison, because the body of the mic/transmitter will likely pick up and amplify the motors micro vibrations. That said this was a very good review; however I'm a huge fan of the Zeapon Micro series, and I am anxiously awaiting their new PONS PT (Pan/Tilt) system as it integrates with their Micro2 series of sliders and while not as simple to set up or quite as quiet they are monsters for load capacity. The original micro 2 with a motor can be had for around $450, and I have seen the single axis PONS unit suggested to sell for around $250-$300 which means a whole 2 axis system like the nano should be around $700-$750, basically the same ballpark as the shark nano, but using a stepped motor with around double the load capacity, a more consistent and predictable slide, but also has the ability to add a third axis motor in the future which is something the shark nano can not.

      Hey hey again Bill!
I hear you about my test method, I did it that way because the motor travels with the slider while on a table, while the ifootage did not. I will try another method next time I do motor noise comparisons.
I should be getting that Pan/Tilt head soon for review. I am happy that Zeapon has finally gotten to it as we've all been waiting since Micro 2. I too would rather have the predictable slide of the stepping motors, but will miss the free flowing AB set points of the brushless. I know 3axis brushless exists, but I would love to have the consistency of the servo. If all goes well with the Pan and Tilt from zeapon, the last bit we need is that Follow Focus motor that they've also hinted at in their roadmap!

Great review! Was excited about this slider ever since I saw Gerald Undone's review of it 9 months ago. I guess the whole chip shortage has hit iFootage as well with this slider. Have they given you any indication when it may actually be available for purchase?

      Hey again Gerald!
Hope all is well my friend! Same here, really love the use of the brushless motors to physically set up AB points. I have not heard when they are going to get more in stock, it seems like they sell out immediately the moment they get some in (Same with BHphoto) Hopefully some more will come in soon!

Another great review. How do you like this as compared to the Zeapon? Specs say the Shark has only 8 inches of movement when not on a tripod. Do you find that's typically enough, or do you find it necessary to mount to a tripod to get the longer 16 inch moves? How smooth is it when moving at its slowest speeds? Does it have ease in and ease out, to slowly begin and end a move? (lots of questions, I know). Thanks

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 роки тому +1

      Hey hey again Michael!
I leave mine on a tripod the entire time to take advantage of the full slide, during my testing phase I rarely did a table top slide. Personally I think 8" is probably too short unless you are doing super macro shots. For Product shot b-rolls the 16" is a nice length for indoor small studio. If my studio was bigger I'd probably like a 24" extended slide like the Zeapon.
That being said, the Zeapon has less quirks to work with because of tactile servo motor. However to go from point A to B to set up the slide forces you to wait for it to go those points which can take anywhere from 5-20 seconds depending on the Zeapon slider length you have.
The Shark does have Easy in and out points which is nice. As for the slowest of moves, it does decently well. I stayed in the 20-30 second areas for most standard shots. I can't say how well it does with over 1minute slides. I can take a look and report back alter.

@@TLDR_filmmaker Thanks for the detailed reply. Just had a look at Zeapon's new pan tilt head - the Pons PT. Already on Aliexpress for around $200. So a full-up Zeapon with 3-axis slide, pan, and tilt should be around $600. Looks like the current slider to beat. Only major feature it's missing is integrated follow focus.

I bought the Edelkrone SliderOne v2 with the HeadOne kit to add Tilt function. Used it 2 times, I need to pull it back out to get some use out of it. I do like the ability to drag and position sliders like the Shark since it has brushless motors.

      Hey hey Matt!
Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
I unfortunately have never operated a edelkrone slider in general so I can't say how I feel about the difference between the two. I hear mix things about it "sagging" at extreme ends, but thats probably the very long models and they could be the older type as well. For the most part, for this slide travel, the ifootage is extremely solid when doing the extended slide while mounted on a tripod.

One things you dont mention is you need a good ans solid tripod, otherwise the slider kinda fall off on the side sometimes. Apart of that, this slider is really usefull!

      Hey hey again CultureJapon!
Good call! Very true, a solid metal slider mount directly onto the video head mounting point would be best, thats how I decided to mount it instead of mounting it onto a video head. That calibration process in the beginning can be pretty harsh sometimes!

It jitters a lot for me, I will try buy a lighter video head, what is the one you use with a long plate?
How do I know where is the center of the weight perfectly?

      Hey hey Waleed!
Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
For me I just use a super basic tripod head thats not meant for fluid pan and tilts, I just needed a bulky to hold the camera. I have a manfrotto quick release plate with a long plate for me adjust back and forth. As for knowing where the balance is, this is based on your practice and just knowing where the balance is as you pan and tilt the head. When its flat, its easy, but as your tilt down, you gotta move the plate backwards, if you tilt up, you got to move the plate forwards. That is extremely general, but it should give you an idea of what to do. If you've ever balance a gimbal before, this will be easier to understand. Hope this helps.

This slider can't do pan and slide 'independently' of each other. In other words the pan and slide will both start and end at the same time. You can't for example start the slide and have the pan start later and finish earlier. It's a feature I fully expected this slider to be able to do. But it doesn't. There's no reason it shouldn't be able to. It is after all supposed to be 'programmable' .

For this two point slider, it unfortunately can't be done. Other sliders that allow you to have more than two waypoints can achieve the independent motor moves. In theory this iFootage slider could maybe get a firmware update to allow it more waypoints, I can't see why this feature couldn't be added unless the memory chip inside is too small to handle more waypoint data.

@@TLDR_filmmaker Thanks for getting back to me. I have this slider and I love it. But given the expense, it should be able to do this in my view. Does iFootage even do firmware upgrades? I was trying some stuff last night and you can achieve this manually with the phone app. But it sort of misses the point of it being programmable and repeatable.

A slider is NOT in any shape or form a gimbal so I have no idea why you’d claim that

Hey hey Anywhere Near Zero Official!
Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
Sorry if there was confusion, in the video I talk about how because of the slider using brushless motors it follows the same brushless motor rules like on Gimbals. The Brushless motors needs to self calibrate weight and resistance, there is computer inside making all those calculations for movement, like a gimbal. I didn't mean that this slider was literally a gimbal in that it makes the same movements, obviously it does not.
Anyways, hope this clarifies what I meant and why my "cons" was heavily based on gimbal principles in that the motors have their own quirks you need to work around to get the most out of this slider.
