Lyrics
I've got too much energy to switch off my mind,
but not enough to get myself organized.
My heart is heavy - my head is confused,
And my aching little soul - has started burning blue!
I can't give you up, till I've got more than enough.
So infect me with your love -
Nurse me into sickness. Nurse me back to health.
Endow me with the gifts - of the man made world.
When desire becomes an illness instead of a joy,
And guilt a necessity that's gotta be destroyed.
I can't give you up, till I've got more than enough.
So infect me with your love -
Nurse me into sickness. Nurse me back to health.
Endow me with the gifts - of the man made world.
Take me by the hands and walk me to the end of the pier.
Run your fingers through my hair,
and tell me what I wanna hear -
Will lies become truths in this face of fading youth
from my scrotum to your womb, - your cradle to my tomb.
I can't give you up, till I've got more than enough.
So infect me with your love -
Nurse me into sickness. Nurse me back to health.
Endow me with the gifts - of the man made world.
Nurse me into sickness, nurse me back to health
And tell me what it is that I want in this world!!
Probably the most underrated artist of the 80s. Period.
Absolutely agreed!!!!!
For once I would agree to an Underrated Artist comment. Though to those that know, Matt Johnston is rated very highly.
I don't think so.
yes
Fuck yes! Seeing him this November in Brissie😁😎
Nearly 40 years later and this is still ahead of its time.
Good memories of good times! My 18 year old son tried to "introduce" me to this song! Picture his face when I produced the original 7" vinyl! LOL!
I'm guessing incest was an issue?
... VHS Tape :-)
Hahahahaha that is classic ! Nice one !
Hahaha....that’s GOLD!! 😂
Classic
Not heard this in years. I can't believe how good it still sounds.
Hi I recommend an indie song here on youtube called 'Where I Come From' By Robert Nix
ua-cam.com/video/fPSO8pdAX6c/v-deo.html
I remember this being shown in its entirety on Channel 4, and then I bought it on laser disc...great days! Soul Mining and Infected were two astounding albums.
Still waiting for the blu ray.. sort it out MJ x
agree
Me too. It’s amazing to think (looking back) that a TV channel would do something like that. ’Soul Mining’ still sounds great.
Been wanting the laserdisc for years now. Sooo awesome, the good ole days.
Yes, I remember seeing the whole thing on channel 4 also.
the bass drum pattern in this song is so ridiculously good
David Palmer - drums
@@rokapali69David Palmer formerly of ABC!
Love a good bassline, crisp tops, awesome vocals x one of my all time faves
I owe everything to Matt Johnson for this album as it's how I met my wife in 1987....And we are together ever since. Always play a track of his on my radio show. Thank you Matt.
Gary Gibson a non robot controlled playlist on radio great to hear
Browsing some off the radar 80s tunes here in Mex...scrolling comments and look who I find... Love to Sandra and the Girls. Keep rocking the Ultratunes.

Matt Johnson is kind of a little genius who perfectly blends music with words, adding to them a great power.
hell yes!
Not only that, but he also has an eye for the visual. The other songs on the Infected album had promo videos accompanying them, and individually and all together, the whole package is a masterpiece.
This VHS album was so important to me when it came out. I had it on loop in the background all the time. I was obsessed. Still sounds amazing.
and you were not alone, most indie band faithful were doing the same best music here saw them at earls court in 89' yes amazing
Still got mine....the main reason I still own a VHS player.
tostare an obsessed The the fan you say? Why, there's surprise 😲
I remember Paula Yates interviewed him out there.
For me in 1988.89 it was the CD ... especially “Angel if Desception“ with the fighter plane chat on radio. Had been in German Military that time ... and in 1990 stationed to Ramstein. First US.Iraqi war beginning the last decade of the old millenium.
This song is top of my Covid 19 Corona Virus Playlist.
Don’t stand so close to me #2
I remember dancing myself stupid to this song in the eighties...great energy beat
R MCK mine too
Living on my own - Freddy Mercury
You do remember that this band had a song called The Armageddon Days Are Here (Again)?
The The best band(s) ever Matt Johnson songwriting genius. So underated, glad i lived through the 80s n 90s.
One of the best tracks, not only of the 80’s, but of all time. When that guitar kicks in……just takes you there. The riff reminds me of Big Trouble in Little China.
Classic album! Decades ahead of its time! Genius
I just bought this album yesterday. 9/5/20. Amazing. Absolute gold
Bien hecho.Buena decisión.@@kidofsteel0362
No one will ever be able to tell me The The (Matt Johnson) isn't the greatest musiof the 80's. I met him a couple of times. One time he introduced me to Dolores O'riorden who was opening up his tour with the Cranberries. He is pure class and totally thankful for and to his fans.
Wow. I'm happy he's a down to earth bloke. I didn't expect anything less.dolores she's well fit.
RIP Dolores. What a talent she had as well.
The The isn't the greatest music of the 80's.
@@silverapples75 That's just my opinion and you are entitled to yours unless you say The Cure or The Smiths, and then your opinion is meaningless.
@@kevinpotts123 The Smiths, by any measure you name to mention, are a magnitude better than The The, who are utter nonsense, and for students from Gloucester.
Soul Mining and Infected. I have lived with these since 83, aged 19.
The Jools Holland version of Uncertain Smile never gets old.
Matt Johnson, living legend, ahead of his time does not even start to cover it. And we still had Johnny Marr to come 😎
jools holland did a separate version or are we talking the SIRE 12" mix?
Didn't Johhny Marr not join up with Matt, after leaving The Smiths?
@@stevendenny7260 late 80s early 90s he played with The The
Bought this album when I was 18 and it still blows my mind 20 odd years later!

Me toooooooooo. Thirty years...and some. I had Soul mining on cassette (it snapped at one point. So I sellotaped it back together. Every time I hear Giant, I still in my mind expect a muffled noise where the player hit the sellotape. and kids these days think theyre funky by editing digital music files...pffft) lol. All his music still holds up in this day and age of...bullshit.
LaKroixmusic Depends how old you are!
sellotaping cassette tapes back together was the business, well thought i was a top scientist perfoming surgery... ha ha ha.....
So glad someone else did that...I was a total Pro!!!

Matt Johnson brilliant loved it in the 80s, love it today, video mind blowing
I hereby nominate this tune as the official anthem of the 2020 pandemic!! Saw them in Perth Western Australia in about 1989 with Johnny Marr on guitar. So awesome!!
"Dusk" is one of the greatest albums ever written !
This is one of the first albums I ever listened to back in '89, it was my brother's. I couldn't stop repeating it and 30+ years later I'm still listening to it (along with all the other albums too), the lyrics have become more and more relevant as life choices have mirrored the dilemmas and personal traits and quirks Matt sings about. Such great melodies too. Matt, you're a lyrical genius!
Thank God for older Brothers
Got this on release in 1986. I remember the first showing of the video on channel 4 one friday night - the first time I got home from the pub early and sober on a friday in years. Superb then, superb now. Everyone I've played it to has bought the the album. The best album of 86 by miles.
Matt Johnson is a musical genius. Always loved his stuff. I liked it even more when he got together with Johnny Marr
I met Matt in Florida back in the early 90s in a town on the Gulf of Mexico.. He’s one of the most genuine, intelligent and incredible men I’ve ever had the pleasure of conversing with, and his music has been one of the most pleasurable experiences I will ever know. I think of him often and wish he and his family all the best life has to offer. His art is truly Promethian.
It's funny how I'll forget about The The for a spell, and then I revisit them and am reminded of Matt Johnson's stunning musical legacy. I listened to their stuff years ago all throughout high school and my 20s. Not enough people know The The.
When desire becomes an illness instead of a joy...
Neneh Cherry on backing vocals, also dancing round the fire in the video
oh wow I didn't know that! Thanks stranger from 3 years ago :D
Oh yars.....
She sang on Slow Train to Dawn with him as well...thats a tune also..
ua-cam.com/video/TfzvFKO1ud8/v-deo.html
Its not Neneh Cherry dancing. Matt filmed this in Bolivia. Tessa Niles is providing backing vocals...
listened to this band 30 odd years ago loved them and love em more now , bass not percussion are amazing Matts voice gets better with age, BRILLIANT
The musical layering that appears on this album are nearly unmatched, it's a sophisticated and fantastically produced album, reminds me a lot of Marquee Moon by Television.
I remember seeing The The open for Talk Talk and Duran Duran. Concert for stutterers I believe they called it.
Yeah, Mr. Mister were the opening act I think?
Good one...I laffed
The Duran Talk?

When I was at Florida State University I worked at the college radio station. I used to love playing this. Hell, thirty years later I still love playing it.
This album was WAY ahead of it's time. The creativity of production is insane, even in the 20's
Possibly the best band name ever.
Had this on vinyl, album. Immense. Holds up so well even now.
Matt Johnson is a legend..
One of the greatest tracks still today.
Fantastic then…..fantastic now. One of my fav songs. X
one of the best albums ever
FEARLESS & INFECTED - the best in my op. of 1988...
My dorm neighbors in college used to BLAST music every Saturday morning at 8am. I'd have been mad, but it was great music. This was one song I remember 35 years later. "Solsbury Hill" is another (my god, those opening chords.)
Takes me back.
Brilliant track, love the trumpet solo.
we were so blessed in the 80's to have grown up with such brilliance, i feel sorry for the kids today who have no idea what great music is, unless they come across Matt Johnson , 'THE THE' ,, SIMPLE SUPERB !!!!!'
A timeless, transcendent triumph!
The The has been my therapy music since 25 years ago
Neneh Cherry made this album even more amazing than it already was.
Off course. The song "Last Train to Down" is amazing.🪐
odd that she wasnt credited on the record
An incredible album of it's time that still stands tall to this very day - whenever this is... If you haven't listened to his album 'Soul Mining' I absolutely implore you to do so. A work of art indeed, as of course is the Infected.Much respect Matt.
A great follow up to Soul Mining, the best album of the 1980's.
Mate, if you need to borrow some albums, just ask.
Love the drumming and bass - used to play this over and over. Never get tired of it.
what a great guy and what an album, a total classic
This is the Empire Strikes Back in my the The Star Wars trilogy. Epic! Nothing ever sounded anything like those three albums. I wore them out on vinyl, cassette, and CD.
How was this track not a chart hit? It's so damn catchy!
Just the PERFECT song!
It reminds me of my days in LA and the 1980s KROQfm.
Bringing it back to Austin, Texas 2020.
Matt Johnson was right up there with Prince for innovation in the '80s.
Oh that bass line - that bass line - just beyond brilliant
If you weren't out on a dark pulsing dance floor dancing, as I was, to this, back in the day then you missed something great my friend....sorry. This is simply some of the best.
Great memories dancing to this at clubs
I wasn't even a thought yet lol
Yeh man I was there. This, Ultravox. BADynamite , crazy times , best sounds.
Too hard to dance too. Strange beat. I can do it but I have to work at it instead relaxing.
The Depot. Baltimore.
Vibes of the film “Fitzcarrald” in the first 1/3 of the video.
Buahhhh ... Suena fenomenal. Tengo el LP y el CD. Benditos 80s. Esta canción siempre me pareció la mejor de The The. Ninguna canción suena como esta .... Es única, irrepetible y mágica...
Flashback. Still holds up very well
Number 1 on Covid19 playlist
Yeah!.Ha,ha ha.
One of my favorite artists of all time! if you want to give your sound system a good work out try the 12 inch extended mix of slow train to dawn, Infected is a classic album and track. I'm so pleased I got to see them play live especially that Johnny Marr was in the line up. Matt said recently he was working on new material for a The The Album. Can't wait !
l remember channel 4 played the album on TV. I must have been 14....hooked!
me too, I was mesmerised, one of those pivotal moments, it was shown on Channel 4!!!!!
John Cooney same here, it was shown on channel 4 before the infected album was even released. brilliant band & like you I still think so. Cheers
Oh man, same here, wore out the VHS!
I remember that night, I had two VHS recorders hooked up in case one didn’t work!
Such flawless writing
I'm pretty sure Matt Johnson is how I survived my youth. What a genius. And how is every song such a gd masterpiece? Tonic for the tortured soul....
Johnny Marr guitar on this album kills ... had this back in the day on high rotation.
Marr is not on this one. He's on the next one (Mind Bomb).
@@basskittens7495 Matt did a good job sounding like him then ...
'The The' is one of my fav discoveries from the 80's.
If I was lost in space I would have this playing. An even I didnt have it every beat note and word is in my head.
One of the best albums ever.
Fun video to rewatch. Loved most albums and saw them playing live at the now gone Reunion Arena in Dallas, sharing the stage before Depeche Mode. I also recall seeing Mark walking with their back then Dallas drummer, on St. Marks (NY). Brilliant sound, from that album Heartland is still of of my favorites.
This whole album... simply legendary. Almost every song hits me just as hard as when it was first released.
The The best album of the 80's. Listened to this a WHOLE lot.... I hoped to find Last Train to Dawn, my favorite. Miss Cherry on vocals, YEAH? Lovely song...
12" extended mix is pure musical elation
Fantastic song/whole album. I bought this on Philips CDi ,a format which never really "took off"......luckily my son converted it so it's now on the computer. So I can watch/listen to the whole album. Chuffin ell....it's BRILLIANT !
Heard this in 90 and ever saw the video until now. Unusual.
In Spain, the state televisión put in may 1987,the 8 videos of álbum infected. Now TV is one desert or nothing.
It's the year 2020 and I just discovered this album for the first time. I really it. Nice funky bass style.
absolutely effin' magic, the full album is great,
the only thing is i ain't got 2 much energy any more!!!!!
This was on Night Flight back in the day. Lots of cool, off the beaten track vids on that show.
Night Flight was the best.
36 years old, but timeless one of the best Videos ever....
One of music's greatest and most influential pieces.
A constant on playlists of mine since release…phenomenal album.
It was hard to find old gems like this song, before the proper organisation of artist's work. 😎
Filmed in Bolivia. The airport is La Paz airport, I remember the plethora of old DC3s and the view of Illumani. The trumpet solo is in Vale de la Luna, just outside a wealthy suburb of La Paz.
Filmed in Perú and Bolivia
I was sooooo into this band in the 80’s and completely forgot about them for like three decades. My high school friend reminded me of them and now the songs are coming back to me.
I grew up with this before and after all.
i was introduced to this song, in a mtv classic cd!
practically drum and bass
spent many hrs in a studio , this was always playing ... fantastic..
1988 or 1989 I was in high school working at a local top 40 radio station and just discovered The The through this very song. That radio station had a 12" remix on vinyl, I made this song 30 minutes and practically played the entire 12" forward and backwards. The joys of reel to reel multi track recording. Edit: for the record, the top 40 radio station never played this song.
My favorite song by a great band! Started listening to them in 1986 on college radio where else
Great they were on there own , brilliant
The The - THE best band of all times, great song this one; plus This is the day always makes me dance

Back then we listened off vinyl only, and I have to tell you, this album along with _Soul Mining_ and Talk Talk's _The Colour Of Spring_ were regularly thundering out of my Systemdek/Rega-based set-up in 1987. Happy days.
This is a masterpiece of music by the genius Matt Johnson and Neneh Cherry in the choir :)
