BYRNA LE • NYLON vs ALUMINUM vs RUBBER-STEEL AMMO

  • Welcome to Airgun Alley’s second video about Byrna, a powerful .68 caliber launcher that global brand Byrna markets around the world as a "less-lethal" form of home/self defense.
    Today we’ll have a good look at a variety of solid ammo: Byrna’s hard plastic Kinetic Projectiles + light weight aluminum balls + the famous Rubbe-Steel balls by Acil Selling - with the new Byrna LE (Law Enforcement) 16+ joules launcher.
    We put the plastic, aluminum and rubber-steel rounds through the chronograph to calculate the speed of the projectiles in FPS and ultimately their power in Joules... (easier written than done, as you'll see.)
    We then turn against the coconut and finally we shoot a very, very, very (I think 20%) ballistic gel T-Rex, kindly provided by Clear Ballistics.
    Will all the ammo work in this world famous powerful CO2 launcher? And how powerful are them shots? Click play and enjoy this MUST WATCH video!
    PS The low light really ruined some key readings due to low light ERR messages. I was in a rush against the incumbent looming storms and sunlight was a disappearing luxury during this shoot.
    I will be putting this gun through the chronograph a lot....

    Byrna LE + Aluminum Balls.....
    A Winning Combination !!!

  • @Metalalbumreviewers
    @Metalalbumreviewers 10 місяців тому +17

    I recently purchased the LE. I have it for work (I run a small security company), and use it as an alternate carry on days I'm running errands here in commie SoCal where I know I won't be able to carry my firearm (lucky enough to have a CCW here). So far, I'm loving it. I had an interaction with security at a venue recently, where firearms were prohibited, but I would be allowed to have something like a can of pepper spray, or a pocket knife. The looks on their faces when their supervisor googled the laws around non-lethal launcher/spray devices, and had to sgree that even if they didn't like it, I was allowed to do it, was absolutely golden. I was gracious and polite about it, but it was nice to finally have a solid defense tool I can take basically everywhere legally, and people here kinda have to suck a fat one, learning that it's literally just a can of pepper spray on paper.
    My ONLY complaint is the difference in consistency across different ammo types.
    Also, I know that the only reason I'm allowed to carry pepperball ammo here in CA is because I have all of my state security certifications and licenses.

      quick uodate for anybody who comes across this , metal balls I got from amazon were much better than the byrna brand , cheaper than the byrna brand and caused no issues to the byrna pistol itself that I have noticed
      I also tested black plastic "reusable" ones from Amazon and not only were they much cheaper but alot more dense and hard and overall better than byrna brand balls
      conclusion : dont waste money on byrna brand balls

Wasn't sure if I would mess up my byrna but I think I'll order them and then see if maybe you respond before using them. They're not named brand, just something free that I get to choose from because I am an Amazon Influencer and get free stuff every day. Lol! Hopefully they'll work in the sd (5 round mag) with the 8oz co2 cartridges. Any help or advice would be helpful. Thanks.

    Great video. You playing like a Barney Fife cop in the beginning is hilarious. I had the same issue with the rubber/steel balls sticking in the seven-round magazine and had to carefully pry them out with a flat-tipped screwdriver. I was able to get them to work using a five-round one from my SD because of the way the balls sit in the magazine straight up and down instead of staggered as the seven-round has.

    Another great video my friend! A few thing I've found about byrna, heavier projectiles affect the feeding as well as continually "ghost loading " an extra round. I carried my SD with 6 Canada riot balls for about a month or two. When I went to practice I found that they didn't want to feed reliably. I dissambled the mag, lightly stretched the spring, and all was good. Since I've gone back to byrnas kinetic round with 5 in the mag. P.S. If I could get down there I'd volunteer for the pepper tests!

    Seems like the LE has become popular in South Florida. Another nice test my friend. Is the Byrna LE the best compact option or is the Grimburg Gavle better? Hope you get your hands on the Gavle in the future and can compare them head-to-head. John Wixon sells them and they work fantastic and still allow you to charge the Gavel even with it on. Gavel is very well made and very simple it is straight power from the C02 no internal regulator on Gavel which helps give it its power.

      Hi there! That’s always the million dollar question and sadly the answer is a very generic one: it all depends on the scenario you find your self in. If you’re confronted with an armed, heavily dressed or heavily drugged/intoxicated individual the answer is most likely “no”.

    Keep in mind that if you run across a great deal on the SD with 8gr CO2, you can convert it to the 12gr CO2 with a kit that's under $60. There are also now 7 round magazines available. The SD is still smaller, and I assume the LE has a bit more punch due to longer barrel length.

    Not sure if I ever mentioned on your channel, but if a person uses ammunition that is not specifically intended for use in a launcher, thereby “changing” the lethality of said launcher, the prosecutor can raise the argument against the user, that “intent to kill or inflict serious bodily harm” upon an assailant is “premeditated” thus raising those actions to the level of “criminal intent”, which is punishable by law. That said, please use launchers for their designed and intended purpose so as not to fall victim to overzealous prosecution for defending yourself and/or your family, friends, neighbors, or anyone else whom you may encounter needing assistance from an assailant. Less lethal launchers are to “deter an assailant” from their criminal intent. Not to kill the assailant. Showing you have some respect for life, unlike people who shoot others in the back and argue they were in fear of their lives, 🙄 Let’s just say they are murderous cowards. If anyone is in fear of their life while the assailant is running away from them, they need to be prosecuted for 1st degree murder and then they can spend the rest of their lives truly being in fear of their lives while living with the criminally insane. Use launchers responsibly, because the misuse of them can get you a lifetime of suffering.

      @AirgunAlley  11 місяців тому +3

      Hi my friend! Thank you so much for subscribing. I would recommend you watch a few of my videos (and of others) to see which option best suits you.
      I personally like the revolver style launchers, as they offer a much larger variety of ammo options and shapes. With mag fed guns like the Byrna, you only have the round balls option.
      That said, solid round balls have proven to be extremely effective, to not mention the powerful pepper ones.
      So, to make it short, I would see which you prefer between the Byrna LE and the Umarex HDR 68 (16 joules version) as they’re both among my favorite options.
      Lastly there is a PCP (not CO2) gun that I should be testing soon, the Huben GK1. That one promises to be up there among the best options - however it comes at a price. Literally. CO2 launchers go for a few hundred dollars while the GK1 is looking to cost around $1400.
      Hope this helps and best of luck

    well i know you are like in florida right, so i know it is not a pistol but my aea hp 51 cal max rifle i regulated it and i use the exact half inch carbon steel ball bearings at 8.4grams or 128grain.and my regulated speeds are arount 1080fps with 6 shot magazines and 18 shots before the power starts dropping.
    and i listened to this and your riccochets and well i am firmly convinced that i would rather stick with lethal self defense as one round would do the job , being steel it is going through , pretty much anything even half inch aluminum plate, but i do not suggest shooting steel at hardened steel cause it will come back at you.
    smiles as you now know.
    i only use steel on soft targets. i use lead for the hard targets at 300grain and well i get around 350fpe regulated regardless.
    so it is gonna go through a car door and everything in there and out the other side of the car's other door.
    so vehicles used in drive by's beware comming on my street k. i would not suggest it.
    and t-rex go find another meal cause i willeat ya.

      well it is only fair that if i can muscle through the pepperballs(been through prison and they gassed us alot , kinda flavors the ramen soups better) so wipeing it off myself onto the person that sent it is just fun right.
      the steel , well i have had it riccochet so close it grazed a leg and took hair. so i just keep that in reserve for hunting and soft targets.
      got plenty of lead and those 310gr and 300 gr fly at around 750-820 fps and if i need to use the heavy 51 cal my element max it uses 345gr through 420 gr lead and well it is devestating at near 530fpe. like sending a sledge hammer at something, so even a kevlar vest is still gonna allow that energy to transfer into that target break bone and put that vest into the target. it is sub sonic flight so probably wont go through, but they will get knocked off their feet and wont be much of a fight for a bit.
      got a .357 air rifle the aea big bore that sends 160 gr hp at around 900fps and has the same energy level but it is twice as heavy and scoped for longer ranges.
      snd back in the late 80's and mid ninety's there used to be drive bys here in grand prairie many nights. once i had to dodge 96 machine gun /uzi bullets my self got my palms all cut from glass on the ground. but ya know the streets here are not that bad these days comparitively.

    Non-lethal means to use a lesser means to avoid using deadly force. I think using a material with metal in it could only cause death or serious harm that can lead to death. I think using the rubber steel rounds or aluminum will lead to some sort of lawsuit in the future and make it difficult to carry the Byrne Le or other non-lethal tools. Strongly recommended not to use the steel/based or aluminum balls as self-defense because the law may consider it deadly force application and jail time may be produced from this.

      @AirgunAlley  6 місяців тому

      Hi, thanks for this. I however would argue that using a metal projectile Can be deadly, with a capital C. They’re actually far from being easily deadly.
      If your attacker is wearing heavy winter clothing and a helmet, I think having an aluminum ball will give you that extra energy and confidence you may need for that scenario.
      I mention clearly in the video that Byrna is designed for pepper or nylon balls only.
      You are right in saying that it all depends on your local laws and regulations. But there is definitely no law that forces you to use only certain projectiles with a launcher

      Low light. This chrono likes a lot of direct light on it…

    Try a light coating of silicone on the rubber steel. Perhaps they will feed better. Sorry about your equipment.

    Byrna will void your warranty if they find out the owner is using different ammo other than the byrna 3g kinetic rounds. DK Spencer just did a video on this. Despite the fact he supported byrna products, endorsed them, bought their products, byrna said it was his fault his launcher is broken and they won't fix it. They want him to pay

      Thanks a lot for this! I’m not at all surprised. Umarex also does the same. I guess I can’t blame them. People make all kinds of crazy projectiles nowadays. I’ve had “brands” send me wax slugs that melted in the gun. The metal balls are also extra harsh on the barrel… again, I think it’s understandable.
      That said, it’s a fact that people must know, so thank you again for sharing. And really sorry to hear about DKSpenser

    WARNING.....Using non-Byrna balls will likely void your warranty if any damage is caused, There is a UA-cam video addressing this warranty issue with the LE. Just saying......
