Spring creeks? I fish them in Virginia from the bank. 8’-30’ across and 1’-4’ deep. I like to throw Galloup style lightweight streamers from 3”-6” long on a Centric 7wt. I usually only fish them when the water gets up and dirty. Thanks! I’ve heard conflicting things on floating vs sinking lines on spring creeks.

Sorry I spaced this. I'd probably lean towards an intermediate or type 3 tip for weighted flies and a std 24' type 6 for unweighted. Unless it super slow water then it would be a floater and a type 3.

Hi thanks so much for sharing your experience! Hi have a question though..what type of sinking line would you recommend for fishing streamers when wading in the river or stream? I have tried the airflo streamer max long but I ended up with tangling the line that I strip in because, of course, that sinks and after retrieving is completed I have a bunch of line standing on the ground at the bottom of the river at my feet. I think that also affects the cast: when I make the cast the fly try to shoot forward but that portion of line that is below the water surface seems to hold back the line from going out toward the target. How would you handle that?

I usually prefer a floating runner. If I was fishing a small river and needed to get deeper it'd be the Rio streamer tip with the type 6. On a bigger river id lean towards the DC 24' tip. Of course it's all situational.

Alex, looking to put a sink line on my streamer setup for big articulated flies. Adding Shot ruins the action for me. The type of water I’d be fishing would be 3-5feet deep small streams with moderate flow. I’d be doing a variety of upstream casting and swinging through the pockets and need to break that top 1/3 column. I’m looking at SA sink 3/5, SA sink 3/6, or SA sink 3/5/7. Could you shed some light on that and what youd recommend? Thanks brotha!

Also, I wade fish. Very rarely from a boat!

@@matthewmcmillen796 l've been thinking a bit about this, and that is a tough situation. Typically it's hard to find a tip that will sink fast enough in small water to be effective. You may just want to make a short tip, maybe 5', out of T-14 sinking line and use a short leader (2') to it. It'll cast like shit but it doesn't sound like long casts would be used much in your situation.

Hey Alex, I remember in a different video hearing you mention the Yellowstone. I have had a hard time finding a good middle ground for the different types of water you'll fish in one float. Not sure if you have fished it but you'll be in situations that you're fishing 2-4ft of water, then a few minutes later be around some heavy current and hydraulics with water in that 6-8ft+ range, then back to very slow water. I have fished the sink 25 cold in a 300, the sink 30 cold in a 300, and a sonar titan int/sink 3/ sink 5. Thanks!

Yeah, that happens. Typically I deal with that more in Arkansas where I run a jet boat. What that allows is time to switch rigs. The airflow lines fall like a hammer and frequently ill switch to that type of line. That being said, I usually use pauses in my retrieve to get the line down which will pull the fly down. Down side is less bank shots but bug ones don't come from banks in most situations. I typically catch fish over 4 pounds in the deeper runs, 4 to 6 foot. I try to keep my presentation deep and slow to show it to as many as possible in the deep run. Your numbers will go down but you will be fishing for the bigger fish. I personally focus on everything between the boat and the bank more than what's on the bank. I use the Rio striper 300 and it'll get down on a longer pause. Fish like to eat on the long pause also

@@alexlafkasfishing Great thank you! I'm going to try the rio striper... I have fished a lot of the airflo's in the past and I know what you mean they really do sink like a rock. Stoked for more videos in the future!

What’s your stance on the verisleader

      Aaron,
I haven't played with the most recent ones but some of the older ones were not really smooth casting. I love the idea and if they cast smoothly I think they would be a great option.

Hi Alex, just wonder what you think about the Airflo streamer max long? Thanks for all you videos.

    • @alexlafkasfishing

It falls like a hammer so fast retrieves will stay down better. I fish my fly slower typically so they fall a little faster than I like. In deep, fast water I'd think they'd be great. They also seem to take 1 additional haul for most anglers to really get it out. Hope that helps

Thanks Alex, I’m new to this type of streamer fishing so I want to make a good first choice as don’t have a ton of money to through around. I also do a ton of bass fishing so I’m hoping to have this line due double duty. @@alexlafkasfishing

@@robertwest7197 I"d probably recommend a 15 foot tip. You'll be surprised how little sink tip you need on a lake unless you are planning to fish 15 to 20 foot of water. Rio makes one that comes with either a type 3 or type 5 (I believe, might be a type 6) . I'd lean towards the heaver sink tip just less of it

@@alexlafkasfishing Sounds good and thanks for responses. I don’t fish lakes hardly at all. Once our steelhead are gone from the river I fish, I do mostly river bass fishing mixed with browns but I have to travel a couple of hours to get to a river that holds browns. The river I fish for bass is all walk and wade. How much would you think I should cut off the front? I have a Flycraft raft but I’m by myself so I get out a w&w from run to run. Oh I’m from Ontario Canada.
