Alex Lafkas Fishing
United States
Приєднався 23 лис 2019
Hello, I'm Alex Lafkas. This channel is dedicated to teaching you how to become a better fisherman. This isn't just another fishing channel. It contains fishing tips and strategies I've learned in the last 30 years, which are scattered throughout my videos. There will be a big emphasis on fly fishing but not limited to fly fishing. From casting, streamer and dry fly techniques, boat fishing, and everything else fly-fishing, it'll be here. I've spent over 30 years fishing and guiding for brown trout across the U.S. I base my operations out of Traverse City, MI, and spend 2 months a year on the White River in Arkansas. The last 10 years more effort has been focused on fishing aggressive techniques on lakes for bass, pike, and musky, on flies and gear. This has presented plenty of opportunities to learn, which has helped in all angling pursuits.
Fly Tying: Hex Parachute
I tie an example of my favorite hex parachute pattern. This patten can be tied for an iso or brown drake as well by down sizing the hook. It's not the easiest for beginners but with the right materials and some practice it won't be hard. I'll share some materials that have made these flies easier to tie correctly that are readily available.

Streamer Fishing Winter Brown Trout

Fishing streamers in the winter should have anglers look for different types of water than spring and early fall. In this video we target slow water with fine substrate to find nice brown trout. Winter has approached quickly and Russ Maddin and I got out before/during the 20 inches of snowfall. We focus on using weighted streamers this time of year with type 3 sink tip lines. Fly Tying Streamers: Flash Tail Whistler
Where are you fishing
Ask your dad, he knows
Hi Alex it’s me Emmett I fished with you a couple months ago with my dad I really like the bug
Thx Emmet, u warm up yet? Tell your dad to get busy on the vise and get some tied for you
Do you fish steelhead from your boat ? Would I need to travel near the lakes to get them. I am in Grayling.what would be a preferred rod to fish this Trout? Would the Manistee be better than the Ausable? I’m sorry if I ask to many questions.
I don't fish steelhead much but they do get nice runs below Foote dam on the Ausable and below tippy dam on the manistee
@ Thank you Alex
Thanks Alex. I will do that.
I will never have that luxury of a second person. I would have to cast to the sides of the river. Maybe drop anchor to fish?? I’ve wadded so far. I hoped to cover more water, as well as minimize the tripping hazards of waders?
A really good way to use it is float to the best areas to fish then wade them. Or, focus on slower wider sections like Conners flat
Nice bug. Not a night guy anymore but I’d roll that at sunrise. Come on summer.
Yeah, you can run it most of June and get bit any time of day
Alex, Can I catch a 20 inch trout in the Holy Waters ? Or should I make a move closer to Mio? Backwater fishing ? Connors flats? Not looking for a honey hole, but a stretch of water that has the potential, thank you. In advance. I know it’s not big like you fish. But it is a monster to me😊
There's 20 inchers in all those areas. Best bet is to settle into one of the biggest holes during a good hatch and be patient. Don't cast until you see the fish you want to catch and just sit on the bank waiting for that fish. There are definitely a higher percentage of them the further downstream you go but there's also less density. It's becomes harder to get around if you are on foot too.
I am going to purchase a Colorado XT to help me get down the river easier. Maybe with a trolling motor? Hopefully I can cover more water??
@deaconterrycarsten9722 it's hard to streamer fish without someone driving the boat at all times, for stalking Dry fish it's fine
Thank you for bringing this to us. Well explained and well tied.
Thank you
So are you fishing this fly pre-spinner fall searching as well as the main spinner fall?
I've got about 3 hex patterns I rotate through for the entire hatch. Some times it's day to day or can be fish to fish but if you've got 2 or 3 good patterns you should be able to catch 95% of the fish. I'm in the process of getting the spinner I like filmed now.
@ Yeah I’ve had good luck with locally tied patterns, like ones at Gates, but not usually with the commercially tied stuff. I’ll give this one a try, thanks
@bryanb-x1w that sounds about right
Excellent bug! After bending out a commercially tied size 8 hex pattern last year i vowed to tie my own on the best hooks money can buy. I am trying the Ahrex FW 570 but will check out the daiichi as well. Keep up the great content!
Thanks Paul. I've been there, it sucks. I have not had that issue with the Daiichi which is why I've stuck with it
Great tying video, your techniques have been amazing to watch on your channel! Your use of materials and the explanation of why they are there are second to none!! I also agree with you, Joel's hair at nature's spirt is great!!! It used to be all I would buy. Recently, I made the mistake of trying Josh Varners hair. Whoa, it's next level. Now that my go-to, if I can find it.Have you tried it?? Thanks again for a great video.
Appreciate it Dean. I have not tried it but now I'm going too
@alexlafkasfishing Maybe next a missing link type pattern. Here it's my go-to searching dry fly pattern. I think it gets eaten for an emerging caddis at times as well as a mayfly. I've caught fush when both are happening. I only tie it in 3 different colors and mostly in 16 and 14.
@deankrueger7178 I do have a mayfly emerger I'm gonna do that I run for most mayflies 14 and smaller
Unfortunately they will not take any advice from people not in the government click!
Seems like it. I'm gonna annoy Tonello as long as he has his position. The Biologist for the ausable has seen better results with reduced stocking, seems like Tonello could see that.
@@alexlafkasfishingI’d be real curious to know if stocking that middle manistee has done anything besides hurt the trophy trout numbers in those sections of river. I can’t imagine many people are fishing those sections of river specifically for some stocked trout to chuck into a cooler especially when they can drive a few minutes and catch some walleye or some other far better tasting fish.
@halvo11 it's definitely made them harder to catch. Over time it will hurt the wild trophy fish because the young of the year wild fish won't be able to compete with the trucker trout that are put at around year 2 size compared to the wild fish
@@alexlafkasfishing yeah I agree, not sure when they started the stocking down there but it’ll have some negative effects on the wild fish getting to that 5+ year class. Not sure what gain there is to dumping the hatchery mutants in there but that sums up a lot of Michigans management unfortunately.
Happy New Year! Thanks 🙏🏾 for all you have done! If I am ever in your area I will personally stop to shake hands!
Oh hell, it's actually pretty fun. People have asked me about writing a book, I was never going to do that. I decided this might be a better platform for what I wanted to do
Thanks, Alex, for the great instruction! This game is all in the details, and you sharing your hard-won years of learning is a big help. So many ways to not hook and/or lose a good fish that commits. So much of this is how not to lose. I use the Daiichi 2461s down to a 2 for steelhead with confidence, but that’s a 3x long shank. Is anyone besides Ahrex making a round bend hook in the shank vs gap size range (1x-2x round bend lighter wire) of the Trout Predator LIght and the Gama worm hook? I’m not seeing other quality hooks that size. The 2461s are 3x, which I like over any of the 4x hooks, but it’s not ideal unless you’re tying a longer pattern. With articulated flies, I prefer the 1x-2x shank length that results in bigger gap for length.
I can't find anything smaller than a 2 that fits the bill for me. Seems like everything with the right gage wire has a very small gap. Unless u move to a super short shank like the finesse wide gap
@@alexlafkasfishingI would say that for all freshwater predatory fish-no smaller than a 2 (and bigger if the fly allows). I also try to have good gap relative to the fly…for the point to be out far enough to hook well without being just plain too big. I push that boundary, figuring bigger is better to get more flesh than small gaps (agreeing with wire not being thick). It’s not uncommon to see store bought flies with hooks or gaps too small or poorly located.
Alex is such a laid back dude. Great quality for a guide.
Better put an "at times" disclaimer in there. The young guys I get who are trying to improve get it a little harder
Alex, would you Consider the Ausable Holy Waters a big or small water river ?
Thats a small river in my mind. I'd consider Parmalee down through mio more med size. The lower manistee, Muskegon and grand id consider big.
Lovin the videos, tied up some of them leeches, cool simple fly
Thanks! Everybody out here spending 45min on a fly and I'm trying to make em in 5min and catch just as many
What weight is your streamer rod?
I run 6, 7, 8 and occasionally a 9. That day was an 8
Rock on! Truly appreciate the work and time you're putting out. Rooting for Curt to catch a monster. I hope when you head to the White River you continue to put out content. 1 question: As you're working the oars, speed wise, are you trying to go a little slower than the current for multiple shots or are you trying to maintain same speed as current for a natural presentation. More focus on getting the right angle/shot for your anglers. Tight lines and monster fish mojo to you guys.
@jimmarkovich4119 oh curt gets plenty. He got 3 with me last year from 25.5 to 26.5, his biggest this year was 27 while wading. I tend to go a bit slower with one angler on bigger rivers to hit everything. I also do it to keep the line tighter with the 300gr and a lead eye fly. We fished some really shallow water
@ Wow on Curt! Hats off to you man
Thank you for the help. I’ll check the raft out.
No problem
Loving all the content Alex- thanks!!! What was your leader set up here?
Curt usually brings his rod that has a butt section from an old dry fly leader to a small swivel then we add 14 pound flouro. This can be as simple or as complicated as u want to make it
Appreciate the info! I’ll have to try a swivel set up. I heard you mention in another video that you use maxima chameleon as a long butt section to a short section of Fluoro. How do you attach the maxima to the fly line?
@jaydutcher2112 that's my typical set up. I'm doing loop to loop with the fly line and a crazy Alberto from Maxima to flouro. I'll also do the swivel sometimes, especially when it's cold because the knot is easier when u can feel your hands
@@alexlafkasfishingyou’re the man. Really appreciate this Alex
Another killer video man, Kurt is a lucky lad and soild angler!! You doing a live tiying with Norther Angler this winter? I know you'll be in AK but love that program.
Thanks. Curt is as cool as they come, likes being out and is fine with whatever happens. Matt and I are trying to get something lined up before I leave but trying to schedule with him is like trying to get a sit down with the president
Keep at it, love the content. Appreciated!
Thanks man
Alex, What boat would you recommend for a 70 year old guy fishing the Ausable ? I need to load and unload myself.
That's a tough one. The clacka skiff is pretty light and a bit smaller than the 16lp clacka but if you're talking a drift boat it's more about which accesses you use than the boat. The raft I have is the one I'd get. It's the smallest flycraft they make and doesn't have a self bailing floor. It's around 90 pounds, which is 30 to 40 pounds lighter than other rafts out there. Ive used a bunch of the other rafts out there and they are way more work loading and unloading
Great stuff Alex! Peaceful out there. What sunglasses are you using in that low light situation?
Thanks man. Smith low light yellow. Similar to the low light igniter that they discontinued
Curts a G
Hes been fishing that section 60+ years, he might know a thing or two
Great videos! What is your streamer rod setup?
Appreciate it. Typically I'm running a sage R8 in a 6, 7 or 8 depending on situation, that day was an 8. With a rio 300 grain premiere (I believe). Obviously I'll match the line to whichever rod I'm using
You should look up “Drop Jaw Flies.”
@ Thank you!
@@craigjacobsen388 Have you tried them? They look promising. I discovered them recently & ended up ordering a zip stick. It was delivered today. Eager to try it out when I get home.
I want to be Kurt when I grow up

I appreciate that. Gotta get some more stuff going pretty quick here, I'm running out of content!

@zachpinnell1498 that's an interesting idea.
Do you ever choose wider schlappen tails and if so does it affect the swim?
I use to run those and have moved more to the Chinese strung saddle. I think it gets a better wiggle
What rod does Russ fish, the Echo?
He fishes a couple different ones the echo and a north fork composite blank he gets wrapped
What mono are you using for the articulation connection? Loving the tying videos. Thanks!
30 pound Maxima Chameleon
Nice work Alex and Russ
Thanks Dan
Alex I’m down on the White today with big water. No boat. Thought about renting one. But yesterday I managed 3 bites from the bank on a yellow game changer. One stuck. Any advice on fishing the White from the bank with big water? Seems like I just need to walk & cover as much water as possible. Thanks!
Yeah, I'd be walking the grass banks at wildcat and white hole
Come on Alex- don't stop at the title- make the thumbnail 5 all black bbc's and 1 all white one hahaha
I had visions of a very good thumbnail but im guessing the tube would have flagged it
Love watching all the videos, keep up the good work! Can you do a video explaining the best times to use certain streamer fly lines? Full sink vs sink tip vs floating. Specifically what you do from a boat in tailwater such as the White?
Thanks! That's a good idea for a video. I think it'll be best to do on the water. I might get a chance this week
Nice shout out from Kelly Galloup on his podcast today, confirming you are a top streamer fisherman in the world. 😮😅
No kidding, that's nice to hear. I first met Kelly around 25 years ago when he had his shop.in traverse city. The first time we fished together was in the white 6 or 7 years ago. Hopefully I'll get a chance to get out west and see him again
Great information!
Thanks!
Can’t seem to find anything that hooks em quite like the TMC 8089, moved away from the B10S in larger sizes as well because it seemed like they had to really eat it or else it wouldn’t stick em. Really digging the content man, especially the tying vids. Not a lot of guys who talk about tying a fly to get a specific action or use in a specific situation and love how that seems to be one of your main focuses. Would love to see trophy hunting series, see the thought process of you and Russ going out to find a 2foot plus trout!
I had a lot of heart break on the b10s in 1/0 & 2/0 before I made the change. It's been a long time since I dedicated myself to getting a really big brown. All the stuff I learned chasing browns has been applied to muskies more recently and has resulted in some very big trolling fish so I should still know how to do it. Maybe I'll get my buddy in Arkansas to put some time towards it.
I think you should put together a couple person streamer boot camp for 2025.
I'm way too lazy for that but I guess if the price was right it'd make sense. Might be hard to find a couple people who'd be able to handle my ass for multiple days
Alex, I appreciate your experienced view on the nuances of flies and fishing, keep making great informative content , a lot of guys don’t see the subtle differences and you explain it fully . Have a great Christmas with your family Thanks again .
Thank you Trying to come up with ideas for other videos lately. The more I fish, the more I think of. Been too cold to get out lately
Here in Italy, the B10s has become a standard for streamer fishing after marble trout, but usualy they don't have the tendencies to nibble 😅 for brown I use 2 different hooks: Gamakatsu F314, very similar to the B10S but thinner wire and the Partridge Attitude Salt Extra. In general I noticed for trouts shorter shank hooks works better than longer shank hooks.
I agree. I use different hooks for bass and pike/musky than trout which leads to a lot of tying and a lot of fly boxes
@alexlafkasfishing For certain flies I use the same hook as for trout, the B10S for pike and F314 for bass and asp
Hey Alex. Eric Summers here. Thanks for all the content this year. It’s really educational and much appreciated. Have a great Christmas.
Thanks Eric. Merry Christmas to u too
I love the Daichi 2461. Bought a few packs years ago at Gates and still working through em. Snapped a few, but I’ll take that with more hookups. Hubbard uses ‘em for steelhead swing flies…
There is definite a fine line for hooks. The TMC 8089 hooks anything that touches it but I rarely tie on them anymore because of how light they are
Always great information from this guy
Thanks man!
Merry Christmas Alex! I’m hoping to get up to your neck of the woods to use my Christmas gift my wife got me. As always thanks for your advice and knowledge. Much appreciated.
