NightOwl I love the work that you do because it connects me to my childhood. The music, the characters, the stories; thank you for bringing my past back with your videos!
Love your content! I always felt like Lu Bu against the three brothers should be on here somewhere. I know it’s too much to ask but I always wished Koei would flesh out more of these like they did with the number 1, 2, and 3 on your list. But I know nowadays that’s impossible. There’s way too many characters in the series now. Now it’s pretty much kingdom based. I liked having new characters but I always was disappointed that it came at the cost of fleshing out more characters. I’d love to see Ma Chao having a conversation with Zhao Yun about Wang Yi. In earlier games they did a lot of that.
Yeah I feel this 100% I think there are enough characters and the story is pretty well done, they just need to now develop the underdevelop characters along with their relationship dynamics and parts in the story, respectively. And they've added lots of fictional elements so as long as it isnt anything that deviates to far away from the story or characters, im game for any and all improvements for the underdeveloped characters
But then they would have to admit what Ma Chao did: took hostages to try to force a rival's surrender and killed them when it didn't work. "Hello. My name is Wang Yi. You killed my son. Prepare to die."
I love Zhao Yun, because duh Title Card Boy, but even though he is the main "good guy" in every Title Sequence against Lu Bu....they never actually do anything with Zhao Yun. He doesn't have a story but he's the "Main Guy".
I always felt like Koei had trouble with Ma Chao when it came to Wang Yi. He wants revenge and tries to kill Cao Cao a number of times claiming its justice, but acts like Wang is unreasonable in her desire for vengeance to kill him. Did they really want him to seem like an egotistical villian???
The only way it works is if you claim Ma Chao as a legitimate authority but Cao Cao as an illegitimate one. Accepting this premise, Cao Cao's actions were atrocities, while Ma Chao's merely necessary evils. That's probably giving it far more thought than they gave it. I think they bet everything on "Green man good, blue man evil," and hoped you didn't dig deeper.
Yeah, that's my problem with Ma Chao. He comes off as a massive hypocrite as he's basically hating Cao Cao for destroying his village, but he did the same thing to Wang Yi's village, too. Doesn't help that I can't tell if Koei intended this or not because they barely touch on the subject.
Having now read most of ROTK, the secret sauce is... the Girdle Edict. The Emperor had ordered Cao Cao's assassination, and Ma Teng, among others, had answered the call. Cao Cao used treachery to strike first. So Ma Chao is simply finishing what his father started, while Wang Yi has defied the will of the Emperor by siding with Cao Cao as the enemy of her enemy.
The Top Three Rivalries in the Dynasty Warriors Series Cao Cao vs Liu Bei- these two guys have different ideologies which made them go against each other every time they face off in the battlefield. Even though Wu is part of the Three Kingdoms, it’s Wei and Shu Han who always try to beat the living crap out of each other and their respective hypothetical routes in Dynasty Warriors 8 depict the final battle between Liu Bei and Cao Cao Zhuge Liang vs Sima Yi- a clash of brilliance between two men who are intellectualy dominant with both of them trying to outsmart each other and neither man wants to be overshadowed by the other Guan Yu vs Xiahou Dun- the two of them are always at each other’s throats with Xiahou Dun showing jealousy towards Guan Yu due to Cao Cao’s obsession towards him and despite not being involved in Guan Yu’s fall at Fan Castle in both real life and in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xiahou Dun doesn’t give a crap, all he wants is to kill Guan Yu, period!
@@TheNightowlGaming Cao Cao and Liu Bei are two men who are completely opposite of each other and they are destined to be rivals, fighting for total control of the land with Wu stuck in the middle like a third wheel in the Wei-Shu Han feud although if Sun Ce didn’t get killed way too soon, he wouldn’t like the idea of being considered the third wheel and he would try to pick a fight with both Cao Cao and Liu Bei in order to establish his kingdom’s supremacy Cao Cao: You are a threat to my ambition, Liu Bei! You either acknowledge my authority or get crushed! Liu Bei: I shall not let your power hungry ways compromise the lives of the people here in this land! I shall create a land where everyone are able to live peacefully without being harassed by war! Cao Cao: Your silly idealism will get you killed one of these days, Liu Bei! Sun Ce: SHADDUP! We are sick and tired of you guys making this whole conflict centered on the two of you! You know what, I challenge you both to a fight! Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Ce, a three way battle to secure total control of China! Bring it on, losers!
I don’t hate Xiahou Dun but this rivalry is what makes me dislike him. His disdain makes him unlikable to me, his personality just aint it. Still love the rivalry though, Guan Yu just for being a living legend alone barely even acknowledging that himself made so many enemies
One rivalry that I believe a lot of people tend to overlook was Cao Pi vs. Sun Quan, maybe not as much in the early DW games but after they made Cao Pi playable in DW5. You get to see how similar in status they are within their kingdoms, mostly during the last series of battles for Wu. They attempt to lead their home kingdom with very different ideals. Sun Quan values and shows appreciation for his dad’s motivation and ideology, while Cao Pi disregards Cao Cao’s, with him stating so right off the bat. Plus their wives Zhenji and Lianshi also duel one another throughout the games. Wouldn’t say that this is the most significant rivalry but Cao Pi basically became the “final boss” for Wu’s story in battles like Dongkou (222) and sometimes He Fei Castle (234).
Great list again dude! There are two (friendly) rivalries I kinda wish the games touch on more though. And they basically haven't touch on them at all since DW4. (I'm not sure if it was in DW9 or not cause I've played and watched very little of it) And those are Huang Zhong vs Guan Yu and Ma Chao vs Zhang Fei. Both these duos dueled eachother and was the reason for both Huang Zhong and Ma Chao joining Liu Bei in the end. I love that in DW4 some battles have some kind of unique dialogue for these two pairs interacting. I recall playing Ma Chao at Tong Gate once and Zhang Fei (for some reason) showed up as reinforcements with Pang Tong (which is pretty weird in context but anyways) and Zhang Fei would say something like "What's wrong Ma Chao? You're tired already?" or something like that LOL. The games also don't touch on Zhang Fei's duel with Ma Chao anymore, in DW4 at Liu Bei's campaign for Chengdu if you play as someone else and let the AIs of Zhang Fei and Ma Chao fight for a while(and yes, they are scripted to meet eachother in battle) there were lines of them acknowledging eachother as great fighters as well. Even in some of the made up stages for the Others characters like in "Campaign against Liu Bei, once you beat Guan Yu, Huang Zhong shows up for revenge and if you beat Zhang Fei, Ma Chao shows up. Which is honestly pretty darn cool. There are a few cutscenes with Guan Yu and Huang Zhong in DW7 but outside of those they don't really interact very often. I hope they bring these up more in future games, it would give even more of a sense bond and respect between these Shu officers and really make them feel like they're actually a team. Comparing these characters to ones in Wei and Wu and they feel very weak and pretty unrelated. I mean in DW8XL Yu Jin and Pang De have unique dialogues praising eachother despite they don't even have that much to do with eachother outside of Fan Castle. Yet we get basically nothing for those Shu officers and I've always find that pretty funny. XD
What an interesting read, appreciate the love! Yeah I totally agree, I read that Ma Chao and Zhang Fei dueled and talked about it in both his video and the strongest DW vid. It would be cool if they expanded on the relationship dynamics between most of the characters and really flesh and really well bonding kind of moment for the characters for the game. I talked about it with someone else in another comment, but 100% agree there's so much more they can flesh out with the characters and their relationships with one another
Wow it's crazy that this was recommended to me. I've never played a Dynasty Warriors game before, but I'm considering it. As someone who is recently becoming more interested in historical Chinese wars and the historical fantasy genre in general, but isn't a fan of the more simple minded hack and slash gameplay of DW, is it worth getting into this series?
Wow thats amazing that this was recommended to you, so cool to hear! I think the best game to play would be Dynasty Warriors 8 Extreme Legends: Complete Edition. Now I havent played it personally yet cause I dont own it, but its probably the best dynasty warriors game to date because it has both historical and hypothetical routes you can take along with some extra content and dialogue for some of the others (dont quote me 100% on that, but from comments I've read that seems to be the case). So glad you clicked on the video, hope you enjoyed it!
