Thanks Buffalo it was so dark and cloudy today that the beautiful wood did not shine thru on camera. But talk about a blast to shoot, not sure the last time it has been really cleaned but I think it is time.
@@Dayattherange Hey if you don't mind me asking what rest are you using for the rifle? I need to upgrade and have been looking at some different ones but I don't think I have seen that one.
Didn't Mossberg make a rifle that shot long, long rifle and shorts? Loaded through the butt stock of the rifle. My cousin had one and I'm pretty sure it was a Mossberg. My dad and I used shorts after the dog's would tree a raccoon. I still have a partial box out of his gun cabinet that we used. He also liked the High Standard 9 shot revolvers. Always a tube feed rifle if possible to night hunt because of losing magazines. Shorts were used to kill our hogs for butcher also. Deadly little suckers within range. Great video! Keep'em coming!
@@davidmontgomery2929 my dad gave this one to me foe Christmas 1967 and it was used when he bought it. I have not researched date of manufacture. They are great old guns.
You sir, bring back so many old enjoyable memories of shootin 22`s of my younger days. Thank you so much! Your channel is my first stop for youtube videos just to watch you shoot. Just a no nonsense fun channel to watch.
Wow, you got this 22 short video out quick after our last correspondence! Good to see the Remington cycle them so well, the floating chambers can be a little finicky at times. I've been using 29g CCI Shorts, not the most accurate, but minute of squirrel at 20-30 yards. I also use them out of my bolt action Marlin xt-22tr, tube fed, super quiet. My newest plinker and squirrel getter is a Tompson/Center T/CR22. Cool light weight carbine with a 17" barrel, threaded muzzle....mine done in Reaktree camo. Would love to see you review one, with and without the can, or compare to a Ruger 10/22. Keep up the great videos, its obvious you have a great attitude about "A day at the range".
I wish I had more of the old rifles. My first .22 was a Remington 552. A cheap version of the 551. I do still have it though. I love the sound they make, the crack and echo....
Interesting fact about the floating chamber. It was designed and patented by Carbine Williams. My 550-1 actually has his name ( Williams) and patent numbers stamped in the barrel. Not sure if they all do or not.
My dad has a 550. It won’t shoot shorts or longs. He had heavier spring installed for LR only. It has shot lots of stingers and other high velocity without any problems.
When high velocity ammunition like stingers are used in these rifles the floating chamber is know to get stuck or jammed forward preventing the firing of shorts or longs.
I don't really have any interest in shooting ars or aks, I just enjoy the 22s. I love the quiet ammo, the shorts, the high velocity and everything in between. No other caliber has that much variety in gun designs and variations of ammo.
I wondered how shorts would group. Thanks for showing us. It might be "minute of squirrel" but certainly not "minute of angle". 😆 Btw, I submitted an entry for the group challenge a few days ago but haven't seen it post yet.
From the groups your 550-1 is printing, looks like the barrel is worn out . Mine is doing the same thing. I have had mine since 1956. Over the years I have seen my shot groups getting bigger and bigger. Gunsmiths say I needed a new barrel or this one relined. I am 74 years in hospice, I think I’ll let the new owner worry about it.
@@Dayattherange I submitted a target last week. My best group is around .275" range. I have shot better. (50 yards outside) My best group so far is about the size of the back of a .22 shell.
Ive got a Remington 550-1 that does not have a dovetail, from my research they made the 550-1 in a few different options depending on the year. So i had to drill and tap mine. Buy mine as well is a pretty straight shooter, however i have not had much luck with 22 shorts from mine, not sure if it was the batch i tried or what but the CCI HP Shorts i tested were all over the place.
I've got the 550-1 without dovetail also, just can't bring myself to drill and tap it. My father bought it new in 1953. Glad to see there are still some out there being used, awesome rifles.
If you’re interested Id be happy to send you my .22 Bergara BXR in the carbon fiber configuration. I have 6 safes full of guns, however I’m not that impressed with the bxr.. wondering if it’s poor shooting or a poor 800$ .22

Love the S&W Victory
Early models had no rail, but Weaver made an N side mount for the 3/4" scopes.
Funny thing, due to the shortage I bought 500 shorts, CCI hp. They go bang, I have 2 bolt guns, and a revolver that uses them so what the hell.

shorts

Hi, what is the best scope magnification for shooting this 22 rifle for 300 yards???
