- Old shotguns sometimes need a little TLC to get 'em in tip-top shape. Watch along as Larry Potterfield, Founder of MidwayUSA, restores the stock on a Remington Model 11 Semi-Auto Shotgun. He'll show how to remove the old oil, repair and refinish the stock, and recut the checkering.

Probably some of the most immaculate woodworking you'll see out there.
I would initially think watching an old guy do tedious and time consuming work on an old gun would be boring, but this is like the tenth video I've watched today and i can't stop watching. This is awesome. Larry is like the Bob Ross of guns
This is funny your probably dead or something and all never get a reply but hello, good comment!

You are the Bob Ross of gunsmithing, thank you for releasing another firearm repair video.
Exactly! Simultaneously informative, entertaining, and relaxing.
I would say the Norm Abram's.
happy little shotgun right here
The best Gun Smith of our time!
Bob Ross and Mr. Rogers of gunsmithing, all in one! Only thing missing is him beating the devil out of the stock after soaking it in the acetone.
Beautiful workmanship on a beautiful old shotgun!!
This is a masterclass in timber restoration.
Seeing old guns being cared for and restored makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
This guy is a treasure, very professional and clearly explains and demonstrates each step of the process. A true craftsman.
I will never get tired of watching Larry work on these magnificent firearms
Beautiful. People don't realizethe versitility and craftmanship necessary to be a master gunsmith. Thankyou for sharingyour knowledge and skill
Those are great shotguns. I had a friend had one when were kids. .....This guy knows his stuff. A gold mine of information.
Amazing amount of patience to do this work. The results are equally amazing.
Whenever I watch a video on old guns, youtube suggests this one again and again. And I watch it again and again, with no hesitation. 😄
You are an artist and a true craftsman. I love your work and your videos.
Thank you for showing us your relaxed patience while working one step at a time in the restoration process. Each step really is “simply done” in your capable hands.
Painstaking work, especially checkering the stock. Doug Carpenter repaired and refinished the stock on my Dad's old Model 17 Remington. He redid all of the checkering that was worn smooth on the wrist and the forend. He also repaired numerous cracks, just like on this Model 11. It's a fantastic job, and after watching this video, I now understand how much work it was for him to get it completed.
The confidence and accuracy are off the charts. Larry is truly skilled.
The amount of professionalism and work is out of words.
This guy loves what he does. And it’s that reason he does a great job
never knew it was possible to repair a wood dent like that, really impressive!
Thanks Larry!… I always enjoy watching a craftsman, such as yourself, at work!
I have no idea how i just ended up watching this but its just great!
You can keep all of your soap operas and reality tv shows, watching a craftsman at work is much more entertaining. Thanks.
What a awesome job, that has got to be THE best restoration video,I have ever seen, here in the uk,gun laws as you know are very repressed…you are so lucky in the state’s…I have a pre war,1932,bsa air rifle that needs restoration….and the bit about removal of oil from the stock, was a gem…so thank you very much for a well informed tutorial 😬👍
I’ve been watching Larry for many years and can tell you NO one is better at what they do than him.
Carpenter since 87
AND I WOULD LOVE A HANDS-ON LESSON WITH
THIS GENTLEMAN.
If anyone is trying to learn pay attention. This man is teaching a lifetime of lessons.
That wood is beautiful and you sir are an artist!
It just doesn’t get any better then what you just saw EXCELLENCE AT ITS BEST!
Second time I’ve watched this video! Larry Potterfield is extremely talented…The old Remington is beautiful….wish I could purchase it….
Now this is a CEO, literally does everything.
He i a gem of our sport we are lucky to have him !!!😁😁
UA-cam just recommended me a video of checkering and i read the description. Shocked to see that the CEO is this talented and dedicated. I will be shopping online at midway in the near future
hes like the elon musk of guns

Need to repair a cracked nylon stock from a Remington model 12 bolt action.
It's amazing how much oil you removed from that stock excellent job
Wow didn't realize how much work goes in to the repairs. Absolutely loved the video. Great craftsmanship
That's some real craftsmanship work, very nice, Thank you we have sure missed your videos.
Excellent work Mr Porterfield!
Just had a thought. How long have I been watching this video with my mouth open in awe. You sir, are a magician.
Your Patience is amazing
I have an old shotgun that was passed to me from my late father that needs this exact treatment. I wish I had the tools and craftsmanship to make it as beautiful as it deserves to be. Very fine work on this one. What a beautiful finish!
Rainy day in New York, not going out to the range, you made my day. That was spectacular
THANK YOU LARRY POTTERFIELD! You epitomize what we all should strive to be. Ethical, fair, compassionate, respectful of all and a true patriot. Your soft-spoken demeanor says confidence in all things. We as a Republic are truly blessed to have you in its citizenry. God bless you and yours in all ways. Sincerely, Swede Johnson and family.
Awesome a new Midway video! I really like your longer in depth ones... I used your trick for steaming out dents when refinishing a kitchen table last summer and it worked so well I could hardly believe it. A large ugly dent that had been there for years was gone in an instant. Fantastic work.
Always a pleasure to watch a true craftsman at work. Thank you.
tinkering takes a whole lot of steps
The original manufacturer didn't spent this much time on the gun!! Awesome work!!
Larry, you deserve all the success from your job and stores. A man that takes everything to the last detail.
Your job is extraordinary.
Congratulations and my best regards from Brazil.
You, sir, are a true artisan. A true gunsmith establishing a standard by which all others should be measured. Thank you for this video
Many people will undertake a job like this without understanding what is involved, and yet unwilling to pay the price to have it professionally done. The value of these videos is to provide an understanding of the what, why, and how, before one steps off on something that is above their ability to do it themself.
I wish I had your talent. You are one great Gun Smith and Wood working Master.
Hesus, you are a master. The crack repair was enough, but the restoration of the checkering on the butt plate is magnificent. Kudos!
What a rush job! Why, because I got a rush of enthusiasm for this mans amazing attention to detail. Awesome video.
Considering the labor, I can't imagine the repair cost.
This must be a real special gun to someone.
Or it’s his, a friend’s, a family member’s, etc.
If not, and someone’s paying a master gunsmith for MANY hours of labor, then they really cherish their family heirloom.
After watching this video it's now a special gun to me, I'll never forget it that's for sure
This video was invaluable in helping me restore my newly purchased M1903A1. She was a gooey mess and now a good-looking shooter.
you are a heck of a patient man, with still very steady hands, awesome job like usual
Not only a "REAL GUNSMITH", an artist to boot!
This IS great to watch. I did a similar job on a Marlin bolt rifle stock. The bullseye was missing and I made due with inserting a bit of antler. The pithy brown center of antler almost imitated the original bullseye insert. Don't we all wish we had Larry's patience and skills ?
I repaired my Persian Mauser using this video. Thank you so much for being so generous with all your knowledge!
Mr. Potterfield, im very honored to have met you personally several years back. At the time i met you, I was employed at Ron Peterson's Firearms in Albuquerque NM and asked you for your autograph. Let me say that you are truly a gentleman a fine craftsman and above all humble in your presence. It was an honor Sir.
A friend of mine order the standard model of the gun in the late 1960's. They sent a presentation model worth 3 times value. It was a beautiful piece of work.
I used to work for Warthog Gun Co a stock finishing company, now sadly defunct. We,in partnership with Purdey marketed a kit for stock finishing and where you use a sanded in finish used a powder called Rotten Stone for grain filling,it gave a lovely smooth surface.Watching you brought memories of doing stock finishes at the Shot Show, fascinating footage I`ve watched it twice now.
Anyone that has ever used it knows exactly why it is called rotten stone!
A very beautiful video. Great restoration and a lot of patience.
The finished stock is beautiful, but an old, cracked, worn finish stock is a thing of beauty.
Hi Larry, I just wanted to say thank you, I followed several of your tips and tricks and used them to refinish a couple guns now. They have turned out beautifully, you are truly a gun smithing wizard. Thank you very much for your extremely well done and informative videos!
Your extraordinary level of craftsmanship combined with the unique timber of your voice and narrative style, do not need musical enhancement, imho.
Larry, You are a real gunsmith and master craftsman. We can see the years of experience. I’m a sometimes target shooter, 99% of my reloading supplies come from Midway USA. Funny, every time I turn the tv on, that Bob Ross guy is painting another sky/clouds. Lol..Keep up the great job and we will keep buying supplies and donating to the NRA, via your web site. You are appreciated.
I love Larry Potterfield. He’s like the Bob Ross of the gun world with a little of Mr. Rogers to boot. Thanks for your business!
This is my zen. Thank you Mr. Potterfield for your contributions to the trade. You are a master.
Love my Model 11 Sportsman. Shoots so straight at the five stand.
This guy makes it look easy. I don't think I could ever be this good.
I honestly enjoy the Potterfiled vids! They are outstanding! Go MidwayUSA! Semper Fi
A REAL GOOD MAN AND GOOD CO.MID WAY IS TOP OF THE LINE!!
I MISS MR WALKER .WHO SOLD GUN PART IN AL
This guy knows his way around a gun. Pretty impressive to watch his workmanship.
Awesome restoration and beautiful detail in the process. Truly old school. Love it! Thanks for sharing this video.
It is amazing to watch a master craftsman work and to enjoy the expert editing. Thank you for showing us how. Regards, Al
This level of attention to detail was extremely satisfying to watch I must say. Pride in workmanship, delivering more than promised I'm sure....
WOW! Man that weapon turned out beautiful.
You are an AWESOME GUNSMITH = Best I've ever seen. This is the second time I have viewed this video.
Your patience and expertise, to my mind are unequaled.
Thank you so much for your dedication to your trade.
God Bless You!
larry potterfield is the chuck noris of gunsmithing
Years of experience. Back when gunsmithing. Was more common. You won't find people like this much any more.,,
Larry does excellent work and takes his time and explains everything in clear verbiage. The finished product is certainly desirable. I'm anxious to try this on Dad's old Browning.
Larry is the definition of American ❤️❤️
I have my Grandfather’s Remington Auto Loading shotgun made in 1908. Well used, several major dings and cracks but otherwise a very functional and usable shotgun. My Grandfather, who served in France during WWI, passed in 1963. When I handle the shotgun I think if him and wonder how that ding was caused, what was he doing to cause that dent and crack. As much as I admire Larry’s very professionally done stock rework, I would never dare doing such work on mine. Larry’s work turned out beautifully, but mine has my Grandfather’s soul.
Your videos are outstanding! They have a serene quality that makes them very therapeutic to watch!
Thank you for producing such interesting topics, makes you appreciate the craftsmanship that went into these guns, especially a hundred years ago, long before CNC machine tools! The images of teams of workers in an old (not then) brick factory in Massachusetts/New York are a wonderful travel back in time.
Wow! that was a lot of work. Good job giving life back to that old shotgun.
Just great craftsmanship and care to attention and detail: love this work
I grew up with a Remington Model 11...I was watching for the friction ring... Nice work, Larry!
No way I have patience like this. Not even close. But cool to watch.
Outstanding video on a how to refinish an old stock. It certainly motivates one to try and duplicate when a good example is shown in details easy to understand.
Glad to have you back Larry, Great video as always! THATS THE WAY IT IS
Shifty cz 557
Midway is a very successful company and after watching some of Larry's videos I can see the reason behind Midways success.Bravo Mr Potterfield.
I'm glad you're back at it Larry!
Absolutely fabulous craftsmanship, brilliant work. Greetings from North Wales 🏴
Amazing work , love your channel and the way you're describing what your doing, theres a reason behind the tool and how it works. I purchased some of these tools because you've described their functionality. THANK YOU !
So absolutely wonderful to watch your smithing. The way you present is over the top. Thank you !!!!
That was a superb refinishing of the stock. You achieved a beautiful result.
Beautiful work you’re an inspiration very knowledgeable. Thank you for all your years of service and loyalty to the gun owners and collectors, hunters law enforcement, and Abbott outdoorsman thank you.
You are truly a master of your craft Sir . The little things you do pay off in the end ! Excellent job 👍
It’s midnight I can’t even get guns but I am watching this still
Thanks Larry, your videos have helped me grow through the years.
Absolutely top notch video from a true professional.
That wood is absolutely beautiful!!
It’s always a good time to take a look at Midway and whatever they’re up to, excellent repair job
i love these videos, Larry. Back to your former glory !!! Keep them coming !!!
Superb craftsmanship Mr. Potterfield! I look forward to your videos!
9:15 - Love the split-screen editing you did here.... both steps seem rather mundane and common, but its still nice to see them in the process and the split screen helps keep things from getting too drawn out or boring. Great idea, keep it up!!
Here is a man that really knows his trade, a joy to watch his programs!
