- The Royal Opera's Yaritza Véliz sings 'Chi il bel sogno di Doretta' from Puccini's La rondine, as part of our Battle of the Arias series.
Commissioned by a theatre in Vienna, La rondine (The Swallow) is an opera that has at times been compared to La traviata, undoubtedly because of a libretto that focuses on a somewhat frivolous young women, Magda, who is kept by the wealthy Rambaldo but in love with a well-bred young man, Ruggero, whom she met at the Bullier Dancehall, and who will be forced to sacrifice her love by social convention. Arias like 'Chi il bel sogno di Doretta' or 'Ore dolci e divine' have contributed to making the work’s title known even to those unfamiliar with the work.
Chilean soprano and Jette Parker Young Artist Yaritza Véliz joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme in September 2018 and made her Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season.
Véliz studied at the Universidad de Chile with contralto Carmen Luisa Letelier, supported by a scholarship from the Corporación de Amigos del Municipal de Santiago. She also attended the Castelton Artist Training Seminar in Virginia. Her operatic appearances include Zaida (Il turco in Italia), Roggiero (Tancredi), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Magdalena (Cristo del Elqui), Musetta (La bohème), Jano (Jenufa) and Clorinda (La Cenerentola) for Chile’s Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) for Teatro Municipal de Concepcíon, Musetta for Teatro Argentino de la Plata and Luigia Castragatti (Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali) for Teatro Municipal de Las Condes.

Veliz's Glyndebourne recent performance as Mimi (La Boheme) was superb, her voice is expressive and had sufficient power to produce the full emotion when required and her pianos and pianissimos melt the heart. Her acting was so good that she 'became' Mimi and while all the soloists were very well applauded for the curtain calls, the cheers and Bravis for her brought the house down. It was a great privilege to be present.
She is too young to be this good and I agree that she must take her time, however her plans include Violetta in South America and I may have to get an overdraft and fly out to hear her.

Love her and her voice, but I do prefer her in the bel canto repertoire (for now) based on what I’ve heard. She performed ‘O Quante Volte’ in a master class with Joyce DiDonato, and I swear she sings that among the best who have EVER recorded it. I say stick with what makes you extraordinary, and the bel canto rep is more healthy for a young, gorgeous lyric voice like this. Brava, Diva!

Her vibrato is very fast. Solemn song = semi slow vibrato.
That's not how vibrato works for singers...
Needs work with Italian.
