I got tired of the old plastic radiator falling apart in my vehicle every other year. So I bought an after market aluminum radiator with an extra tank. It has been great! Since it is aluminum, it radiates a lot of heat. The plastic radiators barely radiate any heat at all. They are only warm to the touch. My giant aluminum radiator gets very hot as the heat escapes from it. The fan barely turns on at all. I loved my aluminum radiator
2 more: follow the speed limit in town. Increase speed by 41% doubles the fuel required and work required. When you see a red light take your foot off the accelerator and coast up. If it turns green before you get to the intersection you prevented a stop and you just have to accelerate to cruising speed.
You can also turn off the engine to save fuel while coasting up to the lights. It only works if you are going to be stopped or the engine is off for 10 to 12 seconds for most cars. It doesn't wear and tear on the engine because it takes a while, much longer than 10 or 12 seconds for the oil to run back down into the engine. Yet it saves fuel if you have a good amount of stop and go traffic and long stop lights. Obviously turn your engine back on as soon as you reach the speed you need to regain your place in traffic!
Scotty I have a 2006 Hyundai tiberion I bought brand new , have 82 K original miles on it , showroom new still , I love her , not a penny into her except regular maintaince parts , but over time she started squealing from rubber bushings Etc drying out I purchased the TP 205 and sprayed every rubber part on the car I could find minus the brake system and lo and behold no more squeals no more squeaks runs again like a dream the day I bought it thank you so much for recommending a product Joe... Navy veteran ACU-2
Buy quality body parts, too. Cheap Chinese sheetmetal takes alot longer to fit and the gaps may not match up, as opposed to OEM sheetmetal. You may pay even more in labor cost.
Patriot extraordinaire yeah they never understood that China is a service center and the quality issues only arise when the American companies tell them make it cheap.
@Patriot extraordinaire if you look, you can find Higher Quality products of all types from other places without further enriching the true villains of this world ( the evil CCP) Here are just a few examples of phones from other places: ASUS ROG Phone II (Taiwan) LG G8X ThinQ (South Korea) Sony Xperia 1 II (Japan) LG V60 ThinQ (South Korea) Moto G Stylus (India)
IDK. I think depending on the age of the vehicle and overall condition of the rest of the vehicle, aftermarket may be considerably cheaper. I know when I had my 97 Civic worked on (from an insurance claim) about 12 years ago they opted to use aftermarket fenders and I couldn't tell the difference, other than the fender didn't have the VIN sticker on the inside of the panel). Of course, the car was 11 years old at the time anyway. ON a modern car, (one made in the last 20 years) you would want to stick with OEM parts most likely but for older vehicles, if you're paying for the repair, you can save quite a bit of money by buying aftermarket. And to be honest, not everything from China is junk. Even Scotty says he has stuff that was made in China that lasted longer than some stuff that was US_made and didn't last more than a few years. It just depends on the item in most cases. What you really don't want to buy from China are critical components like belts and hoses, etc. or even light bulbs. But fenders and body parts aren't going to kill or cause a catastrophic failure while driving.
@@HR-wd6cw realistically for some older cars the chinese copy is the only one available unless you want to hunt around different scrap yards or are willing to refurbish parts yourself.
3:30 that is an RX-8 tach. If you don't rev an RX-8, that is when stuff breaks because of the carbon build up. "A redline a day keeps the carbon away" is a common phrase among RX-8 enthusiasts.
@@fraided88 True. RX8s seem very sensitve to carbon build up, especially the automatic one that doesnt rev as high. I have heard of many engines trashed from people not knowing how to drive them.
About 10 years we had a 93 Corolla with the big 1.8L engine 🤣 and were going Yosemite national park. On the way there the temp gauge was perfectly fine. But when we were heading home the radiator cap failed on us so when ever we would hit a hill the temp would skyrocket. So long story short check your cap before you go on a long trip😅😅😅
@@driver4011 ??? That's not how you solve a problem. That's like going to the doctor and telling him you have knee pain when you walk and he just says don't walk.
What would he do? Fixing cars and making UA-cam videos is his life. My fear would be that he wouldn’t last long because he loves doing those two things. I would love to see him get a tv show of some kind. Remember pimp your ride? Maybe he could travel the country fixing cars for people or exposing mechanics that take advantage of people with unnecessary repairs and/or over charging people. I would definitely watch every episode.
Buying quality parts, no way to tell what's quality when everything is made in Ch-yna & put in "Quality" manufactures box. Bring factories back to USA now
American-made cars are the WORST. They are made for planned obsolescence so that the American car companies can make more sales. Their cars breaking more often makes their service department rich. Then when the badly-build Merkin car breaks down again....you go get another American one.....
I'm not a fan of that automatic start/stop engine technology either. No matter what the engineers say, it's common sense that those engines are going to wear faster. They probably do it for a little bit of emissions improvement, I guess.
Thank u for all u do scotty .. u have helped me and saved me so much on these new cars .. I am not a rich man . If I don't fix it .. it doesn't get fixed .. hell I have bought cars for the price they want to fix new cars lol
My dad would've loved your content, like I do too. I wish we'd had the technology to watch this stuff when he was around, so I could have watched it all and talked about it with him. I'm going to apply loads of your advice to my Audi A3. But sometimes, watching your videos, I wish I had bought a Toyota or one of those Civic Type-R's I was eying up, too. I'm British but a lot of your stuff totally translates and I absolutely love it all. Cheers!
Scotty's videos remind me of an old 80's love song that goes like this....."sometimes when we touch, the honesty's too much"..... Thank you for telling it like it is Mr. Kilmer🇺🇸
A couple of things I do to help my engine .. I turn on the switch and allow the fuel pump to cycle before I start it, and then I start it and allow it to run for several seconds before I put it in gear. Even longer in cold weather.
Hey Scotty...You confirmed what I thought, that new engines that stop and start at every red light are going to take a beating. Has to be incredibly harsh on the starter, so are their starters "super heavy duty" and what are they worth compared to a standard starter?
My dad used to be an owner/operator driving a truck. He would save a little money by changing his own oil. One of his trucks took 19 gallons to change with a filter. He would buy a small barrel of motor oil and used a pump so it was cheaper to buy versus buying several gallons. Sometimes he would buy a case of 4 or 6 gallons and change the filter and top it off. The filters were HUGE. I think he changed his oil every 30,000 miles (or more? When synthetics came on the scene they talked about changing oil every 30k+ to reduce expenses. When you're buying 20 gallons of oil for a change...). On top of seeing mostly highway miles with plenty of airflow, diesels run cooler. Of course, in the winter and in the summer, truck drivers run their engines at the truck stop so they have heat or air while they sleep, but it's regular wear, running at a constant, low rpm.
Always fixed my own for 40years BUT..Top tip here for me was contamination in engines coolant making it conductive to electricity and affecting electronic sensors makes sense and is good to know but I would've never have guessed it. I'm grateful for this video👍
Lots of good advice in there Scotty, thank you for the great advice, and good luck with your move, at least it should be a little bit cooler in Tennessee.
Scotty you give such great advice on so MANY car topics I'm actually shocked YT hasnt shut you down for some absurd reason. As a gearhead myself I've learned a ton from you since I started watching your channel about one year ago. We just made the decision to skip buying the 2020 Touareg SEL-R because it has a severely under powered 4cyl turbo. Why would they put a weak 4 banger in a mid-size suv, yea i know its cheaper but come on. The veedub is a beautiful suv but we're going with the CX5 GTouring model(non turbo). Turbo'd small engines wear out so much faster.
The worst part about this video is that Ole Scotty can’t count. He said 3 secrets, and this is actually a wealth of information. Great video as usual Scotty.
Over reving, that's an issue..... But running way-low revs, 'lugging' is even worse! main bearings start to bottom-out and wear increases immediately! Instead, stay in the mid range if manual shifting, allow auto trans to shift when they should!
I checked and changed mine, and it was beyond filthy omg, changed both myself lol that cabin filter was next to the gas pedal omg it wasn't easy getting to, thank goodness for you tube lol
I just changed the tranny fluid to Amsoil and replaced the filter filter and added a transmission cooler to my 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis. My next project is putting on a double remote oil filter with a full flow and by-pass filter from Amsoil.

1999 GMC Safari van with the 4.3 Ltr. V6 Vortec.....Just passed 528K. All original drive train. Only internal engine component ever replaced was the distributor 2 years ago. Runs like new.
Speaking of good MAFs, and just about any other part, check your local salvage yard. Yes the parts are used, but they are usually OE and who knows why that car made it to the Yard. Also, its a less expensive alternative to brand new parts. Ive seen cars with brand new brakes and most likely had a shot transmission. You never know what you will find there.
I’ve sent a car with brand new brake rotors to the junk yard before, Bwhahaha. Transmission blew up and I was quite far from home. Got a little more than the normal scrap value but yeah... that was annoying. Guess what make it was?
One thing to debate here: Dirty air filters don't affect the air-fuel ratio. The MAF/MAP sensor monitors the air coming in **after** the filter and uses *that* to determine how much fuel to use, and the O2 sensors monitor the resulting exhaust gasses to further fine-tune to maintain the correct ratio. A restricted air filter means less air coming into the engine; the sensors see this and only inject the fuel needed to match the amount of air coming in. Because of this, restricted air filters are unlikely to affect fuel economy; however, less air = less fuel to match = less power. While changing out a factory air filter for a low-restriction cone filter is not likely to see much benefit without other modifications to match it, changing out a dirty filter for a clean one can restore a measurable amount of previously lost horsepower.
Hey bro I really like your videos I appreciate all the hard work you have done for all the years! Millions of peoples lives are much better because of you :)! I hope you stay safe bro don’t let the government shut down your auto repair shop.
It's to save fuel so you're not unnecessarily idling at red lights, and on some models, if you sit with your foot on the brake long enough, something like 30 seconds to a minute, they will automatically restart anyway before you lift your foot and continue to idle until you do and take off.
obsolete optics it’s a plainly stupid design focused solely on satisfying one of the worst nightmares to the auto industry and car enthusiasts. EPA and CAFE Standards. What a steaming pile of hot legislative garbage. It provides you as the user near negligible fuel benefits, while needing a beefed up starter. It’s a gimmick at best, and if not perfectly implemented it’ll wear down an engine faster. Regardless of what the bozos over at the engineering department will tell you, it isn’t healthy for an engine. It’s akin to CVTs, they make manufacturing costs cheaper FOR THE PRODUCER but repairs more expensive for the buyer.
@@TraceLight Agreed. I'm an engineer and I hate that stuff. CVTs, Auto Stop/Start, the whole lot. When I was buying my new car, I didn't want any of that stuff, so I got the base model with a manual transmission, and I love it. Granted, I did get the optional engine, because I wanted more power and wooshy noises, but overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase. I even still have a normal key! Well, it's got the four lock, unlock, trunk, and panic buttons built into it, but still, it's an actual key, not a fob, and there's no button to push to start the car; you still stick the key in the ignition and turn it like a regular car, and it's a 2017.
@@labornurse nope, it's a Ford Fiesta SFE; the SE Fuel Economy Package, they call it. It's not the ST, nor a base S-level rental car, nor did I want the flashy chrome accents of the Titanium trim level, nor anything with an automatic due to the class action lawsuit against Ford for their crappy six-speed automated manual SelectShift and PowerShift transmissions, so I went with the mid-level SE trim with the standard 5-speed manual transmission and the only option I got was the one liter three cylinder Fox engine for an extra thousand bucks, which has paid for itself with what I save at the pump ⛽
The one thing about the semi's too though, is that (a) they spend some of their time idling, and they can because they have additional equipment (ie. additional oil pumps) so they are designed to idle for periods of time if they need to (sure it's more wear, but they're built to withstand idling--in fact turning a semi on and off especially in cold weather is probably worse for it than just letting it idle, even if it's for 30 minutes or something, you would never want to do that with a car though). (b) The majority of semis are diesel and we all know diesel engines tend to last longer than gas engines by a decent margin.
Thank You Scotty Kilmer! I am & have saved money, time & can work on & fix problems with my car !! I appreciate knowing how to stop problems from starting

I have a 97 Celica and love it. It was my very first vehicle bought for me for my 15th birthday back in 97. It's got 140k miles and had always been garage kept and doesn't have a scratch on it. It could pass as new. Interior is perfect and the ac blows ice cold. Never been in the shop. Only done oil changes, a few brake jobs, and just had to replace the clutch at 130k miles. That's all that's ever been done to it. It's a damn tank.
Even day cab local semis are capable of a million miles of service.Semi engines are made of the toughest materials, forged parts rather than cast. Also large diesel engines don't turn the rpm that gas engines do. Most semi engines rev around 2500 rpm at highway speeds ,2700 to 3000 rpm is about tops of the rev limit, the semi I drive will do 65 mph at 2200 rpm.Oil change interval on the semi I drive is 50,000 miles
Scotty - Thank you for clarifying the water pump weep-hole. My wifes 07 Mustang 4.0 V6 - at 4 years of age and 50,000 miles was noted by the dealer for having a bad water pump. There was coolant found coming from the weephole. Of course, I knew the car wasnt ever low on coolant and I questioned the diagnosis and told then i'd take my chances and listen for bearings or watch for coolant loss. 10 years later, 200,000 miles, original water pump is still kicking. Albeit, past experience dictates this is about the average lifespan of a waterpump. I am sure it will need to be replaced soon.

My giant aluminum radiator gets very hot as the heat escapes from it. The fan barely turns on at all. I loved my aluminum radiator
2 more:
follow the speed limit in town.

Buy quality body parts, too. Cheap Chinese sheetmetal takes alot longer to fit and the gaps may not match up, as opposed to OEM sheetmetal. You may pay even more in labor cost.
Better yet, don’t buy ANYTHING made in China
Patriot extraordinaire yeah they never understood that China is a service center and the quality issues only arise when the American companies tell them make it cheap.
@Patriot extraordinaire if you look, you can find Higher Quality products of all types from other places
without further enriching the true villains of this world ( the evil CCP)
Here are just a few examples of phones from other places:
ASUS ROG Phone II (Taiwan)
LG G8X ThinQ (South Korea)
Sony Xperia 1 II (Japan)
LG V60 ThinQ (South Korea)
Moto G Stylus (India)
Not just a podcast, but a spontaneous act of generosity! 😆
3:30 that is an RX-8 tach. If you don't rev an RX-8, that is when stuff breaks because of the carbon build up. "A redline a day keeps the carbon away" is a common phrase among RX-8 enthusiasts.
Same also with every engine. It isn't healthy for the engine to run on low rpms all year without hitting redline.
@@fraided88 True. RX8s seem very sensitve to carbon build up, especially the automatic one that doesnt rev as high. I have heard of many engines trashed from people not knowing how to drive them.
💯 Scotty is a G.O.A.T. 👊 TY 4Everything!
Keep a gun and stay on your toes
You should have turn on max heat, lower all the windows. That pulls heat away from the engine.
avoid long trips.

It’s amazing how much you can learn from Scotty!
Amen
This is a video that every American who drives a car should watch!
Does anyone actually believe that Scotty is ever going to retire? I don't.
He will retire when his wife makes him.
As far as I can tell, he never really "worked". Working on cars has probably been like a lifelong vacation for him....
gonna be honest i dont think that its working on cars. its the satisfaction after you fix it.
Car mechanics don't retire, the just stubbornly rust.
Don’t retire. If you do, recommend someone who can best fill that void.

But Scotty you said to rev up your engine.

Kilmer🇺🇸
I love watching your videos. Reminds me of being a kid with my late grandfather. He was an inspiration just like you.
What a wealth of information.
A couple of things I do to help my engine .. I turn on the switch and allow the fuel pump to cycle before I start it, and then I start it and allow it to run for several seconds before I put it in gear. Even longer in cold weather.
8:00 - A lot of people are "Weeping" for not buying a '94 Celica and now they are weeping and are in a hole.
If I had only driven a couple of thousand miles per year, my 1986 Camry would still be sitting on my driveway as well.

The knowledge you have is worth millions
Hey Scotty...You confirmed what I thought, that new engines that stop and start at every red light are going to take a beating. Has to be incredibly harsh on the starter, so are their starters "super heavy duty" and what are they worth compared to a standard starter?
The starter is the least of your worries. It’s the engine that wears out, starter is just a bolt on lego piece
Starters last pretty long, ya shouldnt worry about them, worry about your engine
Thanks for all you do. Keep up the great work. You have saved me a ton of money.
Scotty you are the man. People like you are one in a million. Then God for Scotty!
How you liking to cx-5? We got a cx-9 and we’re in love with it.
The worst part about this video is that Ole Scotty can’t count. He said 3 secrets, and this is actually a wealth of information. Great video as usual Scotty.
Anyone noticing some commonly repeating themes in Scotty's videos?
Over reving, that's an issue..... But running way-low revs, 'lugging' is even worse! main bearings start to bottom-out and wear increases immediately! Instead, stay in the mid range if manual shifting, allow auto trans to shift when they should!
Don’t forget to check the cabin air filter while you’re doing the engine filter. I checked the one on the last used car I bought, and it was FILTHY!
Good advice! Your sinuses AND your a/c system will last longer!
Good advice, but not all vehicles have them.

How to make sure your engine lasts as long as possible? Make sure it’s not a GM!

I have gm opel. Runs fine after 15 years.
My GM got 440.000Km om the clock

He’s right about the mass air flow sensors I bought a “cheaper” one for my F-150 and it lasted about a month then went out again
same here... ya get what you pay for!
And you pay for what you get.
@@JamesJamersonIsAGod was it a Toyota celica?
Sir Scotty! That’s the B-E-S-T advice I’ve heard on UA-cam from any channel.
These “modern” cars NEED a good battery and alternator, or else....,
Hey bro I really like your videos I appreciate all the hard work you have done for all the years! Millions of peoples lives are much better because of you :)! I hope you stay safe bro don’t let the government shut down your auto repair shop.
Don't start your car too much, manufacturers are putting stop/start systems in many cars, go figure.
@@obsoleteoptics is it a hyundai? My daughters 2018 sonatas is like that still.
