Subaru must have a killer profit margin on their WRX STI’s A 10 year old engine in an economy car body with a couple thousands worth of suspension mods........for $50k.

ThaManPiston Are you describing Mitsubishi Evos or Imprezas?
Id rather subaru do this, reap the profit and have monies for the development of the next gen sti rather than not pushing their product and have an unexpected death like the evo 10.
Brandon I get you. The reason they don't use forged is it's cost, also the tolerances must be higher, also. Not as good for daily driving. The heat expansion of forged is more. I believe they use hypereutectic pistons. It's better than standard "cast pistons" but not as good as "forged".
In places where snow isn’t an issue, yes. The STi is the 24/7, 365 day a year sports car. Would I ever recommend spending $50k on the type RA? Hell no. But the STi is the jack of all trades
Greater than the sum of its parts? For $26 grand over the price of a base STI you could have a full Cosworth long block, ball-bearing turbo, and Ohlins suspension, and have change left over to pay your builder/tuner or add extra doodads to personalize your ride. This doesn't even give you true forged pistons.
Two of my friends have Cosworth long block with forged pistons. They hated having to sit there for a few minutes, waiting for the pistons to warm up and fill the bores (or risk damage) every time they wanted to drive somewhere. While I would never consider buying an RA, it'll certainly be a lot less of a pain to keep around than a very built STI
Agreed: I put about $14k into a wrx, never again, still an understeering mess just less of it with nervous handling, and I don't miss being pulled over once a month, new clutch once a year (throw out bearing nightmare), brakes once a year, tires once a year, road noise, and seemingly unending need to upgrade random bushings, constant oil consumption/blow by, tmic heat soak, and if you look at it, it needs a new tune...Never again, but the aftermarket companies LOVE wrx/sti owners because they are complete money pits.
I just can't get into the newer body style WRXs and STis at all. The 04-05 and 06-07 bodies were so much more attractive. Even the 5 door that came after that wasn't bad at all but ever since then I just can't get into them. Also, it's a cool car but not $50k cool.
dash capture's of Vermont my engine is an ej257 shortblock with all forged internals, arp case bolts and headstuds and a lot of supporting mods. I kept my 2.0 heads with upgraded cams and springs. Currently making 404whp at 6800rpm. The v7 non dccd trans handles it amazingly, you will love it.
it may be old but who has surpassed it? the evo was its only true competitor and that died! now the more expensive focus rs is only incrementally faster on paper so i'm sure subie doesn't feel much pressure to keep pouring r&d into the platform.. plus sales show people keep buying the wrx & sti much like the 370z which also outlived the genesis coupe..
Bilstein shocks were available in the Legacy Gt SPEC B some years ago. Had one, and the application was not that great. Really disappointed. For that vehicle, had to add a rear sway bar, and other modifications to be a bit more happy with the execution by Subaru. I was much happier with my 2004 STi.
Rear Swap Bar, Rear sway bar mounting enhancements, Exhaust (Perrin catted downpipe, Greddy dual exhaust), Cobb tuner, Front Sway Bar, STI short shift kit. Still have the rear/front swaybar and exhaust if you are on the East Coast.
Dave Taylor in NZ, when the Hawk Eye came along (version 10), that's where it started to go downhill imo (for the NZ New ones only). They got the 2.5L instead of the 2.0L. The JDM continued to get the 2.0L (they get no 2.5L). And as imports, those cars are 10x better. Higher revving, stronger engine being the best thing. I do agree that they do need to remake the car entirely. But this 2018 model is the final year of this power train.
I think a lot of people are missing the point. This is a limited run STi being sold to the Subaru loyalists who want the ultimate STi. I think it's cool that Subaru still makes limited run versions of their cars like this. I do wish they would have made it crazier. This seems pretty tame compared to their previous limited edition cars
Robert Rowley exactly. I personally can’t see paying 50k for one, and I love Subaru. Personally I could see maybe 43k tops. Just a bit above a limited. It’s an exclusive car (only 500 being made) so only the folks who want it as a collector will really buy it. I’m looking forward to 2020 however.
Well I think the point was not missed by many of us. Yes, this is a limited production STi. Ultimate...it should have been. But this cannot be the ultimate STi when many of us feel the need for more. In fact, getting a base WRX and modding it would certainly produce an STi killer for less money. The only benefit is this comes with a warranty. I think Subaru dropped the ball for an opportunity for making something legendary for a limited production model.
This isn't the ultimate STI. It weighs a lot more than my spec c even with all the carbon fiber bits. After 2007 they dropped the ball. The R-AR was the last great limited edition. Spec C's, GC8 Type RA's, GC8 Type R's & the 22b. That is the list of the best subaru's ever made. That being said I really do like it though, it looks sweet. Just too expensive.
If you're a huge Subaru fan I think it's a good investment. Sure you can take out your spare tire and do some tires and suspenions upgrades on a regular STI and do some more weight reduction, add a functional wing if you want, but this one has all that on it already, so if you're going to track it and want to do maybe mostly chassis upgrades but not engine internals atleast not for quite a few years, I would think this would be great for that. You get reinforced pistons which would hopefully take a tune from an Accessport with no problems and with some certain upgrades in the intake and exhaust and suspension this could be a really cool less common STI. Again I know 50k is a lot for this type of car, but in some other news, 40k is a lot for this type of car!! Most STI owners buying new are paying roughly 40 grand so if they're a huge Subaru Fanatic I don't think the extra 10k is going to really bother them especially since financing dulls the pain a little by spreading out the expense over time. Regardless I wish they made a truly hopped up version over stock, with say forged internals and 50bhp over stock and 50 or so ft lbs of torque more over stock, with the rest of this stuff and even an active exhaust or something and with some really limited edition body work. Still I kinda like it. But I've loved subies since I sold my built 94 Talon Tsi (Awd model) for my GC Impreza RS that finally has a proper EJ207 swap with all STI drivetrain in it that is now running equal length turbo manifold and around 400hp at the wheels. I love the car now. Didn't want to go overboard other than upgraded pistons rods and bearings to help longevity and arp studs for the entire engine, so i kept that simple. The whole thing took me nearly 4 years to put together though.
With the Bilstein struts it’d be that it’s the first time used in an Impreza in the US. Bilsteins have consistently been fitted to performance Legacys over the years, the only Impreza that springs to mind that has used Bilsteins before is the 22B, with the ‘B’ standing for Bilstein.
What the hell justifies $50K for this? C,mon Subaru, it's definitely time for a major upgrade. I'm pretty confident my 2009 WRX hatchback (I paid $25K for it, and I've got approx $10K in mods) would embarrass the RA at $15K cheaper. And...I can fit a 61" hot water heater or my XXL mountain bike in the back.
Subjective taste must come into it. I'd have this for 50 before a focus rs for 30. I just don't like it inside, it's not bad out. I also wouldn't drive a golf r either. That is a good thing, world would be boring if we all had the same tastes.
there was a time when those numbers were amazing, for a 35K price range car, but times have changed now where even camrys and accords of these worlds are in 300 HP range. Subaru needs to up their game, at-least for the STI, if not for the base WRX. And if all the additions stiffens up the already stiff chassis, then high 300 to low 400 HP makes even more sense! - X WRX owners
50k worth of understeer nice... For the standard car sure engineer in a bit of safety understeer but really on a type ra.. Put some bigger rear arb on it and rotate the thing a bit damn
Yeah very generally speaking, stiffening rear makes it more prone to oversteer and more front means more understeer. Ofcourse there are other factors but in FWD and AWD config cars it's a common mod to neutralise the handling
Subaru wrx sti should be somewhat like this right outta the box, especially the interior trim. But it doesn’t sound good at all, needs a proper exhaust. Good review!
From watching this video and reading what others have said about this car I really believe that those tires are not up to snuff and that the chassis is capable of more. I wonder how it would be if it had a set of Michelin Pilot Sport or Cup 2 tires? Much better, I am guessing.
I have to see the track times to see if any of the parts are worth it. In the past a STI Spec C can outperform a regular STI by about 3-4 secs on a track and beats the Evo GSR of that same gen by 1-2 secs. The Type RA in the past are basically Spec C with additional parts similar to the S206-08 series. $50k isn't bad when S208 in Japan costs about $60k and those do run outperform cars that have over 100HP simply because the handling since they are the equivalent of Type Rs, track ready cars. All Production Rally Subarus use Spec C chasis. So I would imagine these Type RA would be hot commodity in the Rally scene.
For that cost (actually a bit less), I built my 2015 STI which has 470whp with 505 torque, better brakes and suspension and sounds a lot better. It still understeers a lot, but I'm pretty sure I'd run circles around this thing at the track or any place else.
It’s def time to go, I’ve owned 2 of them. Currently own one now. I love the sound it makes, but the technology is just getting dated at this point. In 2005 this engine was still kicking butt, however today, there’s just better tech. The new FA motor is leaps better, and I am sure Subaru will be using the 2.5l version of it for the next gen. It’s a welcome change.
TheSmokingTire thats not even close to the same engine lol. Ej25d is not the ej257. Only similarity is they are both dohc 2.5 liter engines and thats where it ends
2013 WRX SE You say that, but the EJ257 in this car IS more or less the same engine that's been in the USDM WRX STi since 2004. The EJ itself has been around since the very late 80s.
I’ll just stick with my 2015 sti. I do like the carbon fiber roof and the highlighter yellow six piston brakes tho. I don’t think it’s worth the extra 10k tho.
Why is the car so loud when going at higher speeds? Meaning tire/wheel noise? Sounds like a thumping sound. The only reason why i'm asking is because i test drove an STI stock, and it was the same thing. As soon as it hit 70, i heard some strange thumping bass sound, as if the wheel bearings were no good or something. The car was brand new and i asked the salesman about that and he said it was the tires. Tires were dunlop. I had dunlop tires before on previous cars, i never ever had that sound. I guess it's a subaru thing?
sounds like they put equal length exhaust manifolds on this EJ257. The problem is... it still uses an EJ257... for $50k. There are many other cars that would make for a better choice at or even below that price point.
Totally agree. I don't think they would every do something like that. I'd just like to see them really push the STI to something special that I couldn't afford.
Subaru. Shit, we're overpricing our cars and under powering them and asking way too much for limited and editions with little to no power added. So yeah this is an over priced car with little to no power increase and using "limited edition" label and charging 50k for it. If it was a little bit more than a normal STI that would be cool but I am not sure many people beyond true enthusiasts and collectors will really give a damn about the changes nor want to spend the extra on the STI RA. Good review but 50k for an STI Special edition with little to no power increase is dumb.
Damn I thought this video would make me reinforce my 18 sti sport-tech and clearly it hasnt FML well hopefully will do the bilsteins. Someone is sure gonna try and see how much that engine with the reinforced pistons will take. I would just work on driveability (cooling, wheels 18's). But hopefully the next gen will be better and not hybrid not 2 tons and make more than 360hp... ( I hate using hp to judge a complete package but damn it needs to be done for this car.

Screw fix-a-flat. It can destroy your TPMS sensor, and any tire you use it on immediately becomes unrepairable (at least at any REPUTABLE tire shop), assuming you wish to go that route. I would rather have the spare tire.
Still not forged pistons. excellent. RIP ring lands. Weight reduction consisting of removing my spare and tools(but done expertly at the zero landfill plant by professionals) costs how much, I wonder? Lolz scooby-roo
Just get a regular STI and do a couple of stage 2 mods with some suspension tweaking and you'd have something still not reaching 50k in total price and have more than enough car to enjoy lol... I love Subaru but man is that price tag way too much of a stretch. That's M2 territory money
I'd be really interested on a professional's take on a comparison between a base WRX and WRX STI RA. I have a feeling it would be tough to find the $24k in value in the Type RA.
It will be a collectable car some day but I doubt it will not resell at $50k. It's a good car at $45k and damn near a rip off at closer to $50k. This is like the Civic Type R of Subbies. At the right price it's a steal; at the asking price not so much so.
Is that Fenske in the BRZ? For some reason this camera and/or angle works really well for picking up the turning qualities of the car (the BRZ video was good too). Not sure if I want a car that understeers on turn in like this thing appears to. Also paying to remove a spare tire... Those Advans won't work in even a little rain much less snow.
Underwhelming for the price difference for sure... But really, just buy what you like and enjoy it. You can compare all you want, there is ALWAYS a faster car than what you have.
JJ Pablo The reason why the STi still runs the EJ257 is because when this latest generation of Impreza-based STi was released the FA20DIT was still in its infancy and Subaru was still using the STi as a motorsports test mule. They may not be in WRC any more but they are still very much involved as a make in rallying across the world and so they needed an engine that had a very wide aftermarket catalogue which, of course, is the EJ.
"this is the last WRX I review" - Matt Farah a few times a year

50k on a STI. As a STI owner, I say go spend 50k on a SS 1LE. They better up the hp to 400 to justify that price tag.
In places where snow isn’t an issue, yes. The STi is the 24/7, 365 day a year sports car. Would I ever recommend spending $50k on the type RA? Hell no. But the STi is the jack of all trades
They seem to be stuck with around 300 bhp for around quarter of a centrury when everyone else is well past them - M140i, M2, RS3, A45 AMG etc.
Dakota Hawk Kia stinger gt awd for 41k?
SS and STI are pretty different cars with different focus. Sure if all you want is HP the STi ain't for you.
or buy a used STI and spend the rest on improving the motor, because it *will* fail.
I was really hesitant to get an STi, but I seriously love my 18. My biggest complaint is the road noise, I wish they had added more wound deadening.
i put High Silicone tires on my subaru ! - very quiet running !
If you are playing Scrabble with people who don’t accept Subaru WRX STI RA, you have bad friends.
Either that or Evo fans!

Well they do have the new FA20 engine fitted in the newer WRX, but for some reasons the STI model still stuck with a 2004 engine basically
Naufal Kusumah .I wish they put a inline 5 or even a 6 cylinder in it with better gas mileage also.
There are some upsides to this engine still being used in the STi, namely having one of the largest and most researched aftermarkets of any car.
I want to see an FA25 already
Matt skeletor. The ROW STI has the new FA20 engine. For some reason we still get this old engine

the S207 that every subaru fan wanted cost 7,000,000 yen which is around $63,000

for Street use definitely too expensive they have a WRX for that for the race track it is a bargain :D

£31k here in the UK, yes please.
Another year and Subaru is still running the ej 257. They have been passed up for years and I say this being a 2 time sti owner

Would rather have Mustang 350 or even the 350r. Sure it’s more costly but you get just as good suspension and 500+ horsepower.
sti ra handles far better on mountain roads cant compare , also cant compare a cheap country usa to do business over a business in Japan
i put a ej207 RA STI Spec C short block alloy sump kit full custom ej205 heads = $16,000 in my 2001 SF5 Forester Turbo ! $40k now.

Ben Chesterman derp derp boy supply and demand! Small supply = high price.
no mechanical lsd for you son

Rear, it helps rotate the car by inducing some oversteer. Subarus are terribly notorious for understeer.
I need to eliminate the understeer in mine.
Yeah very generally speaking, stiffening rear makes it more prone to oversteer and more front means more understeer. Ofcourse there are other factors but in FWD and AWD config cars it's a common mod to neutralise the handling
Camaro zl1 built by monkeys , why it fulls apart when it leaves dealership . Subaru build better cars why they cost more
This is great! this is the first Type RA ever in the U.S. and this will be very sought after.
When you announced a while back you were changing your format, I was a bit worried. But love the track videos even more now! Keep it up!
Auto Tempest was really helpful. found the car im going to take a look at this weekend. thanks matt!

Subaru wrx sti should be somewhat like this right outta the box, especially the interior trim. But it doesn’t sound good at all, needs a proper exhaust. Good review!
46k it would cost , reality less people will buy it
Ben Chesterman Well should be somewhat like it doesn’t mean exactly like it, but less people buying them is not always worse.
The 2006-2009 Legacy GT SpecB came with Billstien struts.
$50K for an STI??? If you want a super Subaru, why not spend $15k on a hawkeye and put $35k in mods into it? You could have a 550+hp MONSTER.
From watching this video and reading what others have said about this car I really believe that those tires are not up to snuff and that the chassis is capable of more. I wonder how it would be if it had a set of Michelin Pilot Sport or Cup 2 tires? Much better, I am guessing.
THAT WILL COST EXTRA money lefty , improvements cost more money next
Everybody who knows the sti well is screaming to change the dccd setting as he squeals through the turn other then that great video
What a sweet gig! Beat the crap outta new cars and give car enthusiasts an honest opinion.
at 9:30, its the first time the STI has gotten bilstein, but Bilsteins were on the Legacy Spec.B from 06-09
Love this video. just got mine and threw it on a dyno, check out why it feels so much faster. Love the review
Champagne Motorsports 320hp
BTW the Legacy spec.B came with Bilstein Shocks starting in 2006
I have to see the track times to see if any of the parts are worth it.
Because the one thing that makes or breaks a 4dr 4wd 4cyl is a big raised spoiler at a huge price markup
2009 Subaru Legacy spec B were coming with Bilstein shocks on them .
s208 with 242kw is 6,264,000 yen / 56000usd . Check the Japanese Subaru website out . And Ra with 360hp would cost 55k easily
2003 spec c ra was 38000usd / 4,141,587 million yen in Japan brand new
I spy Engineering Explained at the beginning of this video, tucked away in the BR-Z there.
As always, quality video Matt!
For that cost (actually a bit less), I built my 2015 STI which has 470whp with 505 torque, better brakes and suspension and sounds a lot better. It still understeers a lot, but I'm pretty sure I'd run circles around this thing at the track or any place else.
$50k is way too much. What are they thinking? You could get a certified pre owned Corvette for that money and have a much more fulfilling experience.
new stingray is 56k list price
He said pre-owned dummy
Subaru BRZ TS: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S
Subaru WRX STI Type RA: Yokohama Advan
...???
The advans are the type of tires to come on a car to save the manufacturer money. Presented as sporty but actually shit.
They'll come out with a new engine next gen, but so many people complaining about the old one when they've never owned it
I owned one! In a Legacy GT I had in high school.... in 1998. The engine needs to go.
Owned an sti, have the wrx fa20. Yeah, we can complain.
I’ll just stick with my 2015 sti. I do like the carbon fiber roof and the highlighter yellow six piston brakes tho. I don’t think it’s worth the extra 10k tho.
As a Subie owner and fan, I find this a hard sell. For $50k, it shouldn't just be minor changes.
Put the Michelin tires on RS on this and it will be same on the track. Tires on a track make all the difference
Got one. Best sti never drove. Sorry for all the haters. I really don't need my money in my grave. I'm happy to pay the extra $10k
People in USA complain that STi RA is expensive,in Puerto Rico a regular STI start in 59,000 imagine the price for The STi RA 😩
It's a shame seeing Subaru losing it's way. The next STI/WRX better not disappoint.
and they wont be cheap
A lot of hate here but it looks like you had a blast!
sounds like they put equal length exhaust manifolds on this EJ257. The problem is... it still uses an EJ257... for $50k. There are many other cars that would make for a better choice at or even below that price point.
Blame high business cost in Japan
I'd like to see an STI pushing 400 whp from the factory.
then it will cost 65k idiot
wrx sti s208 with 242kw is 56k Japan
HipsterCarpenter probably never gonna happen and sadly if they ever do the price tag would be close to 70k
Totally agree. I don't think they would every do something like that. I'd just like to see them really push the STI to something special that I couldn't afford.
I just want them to close the block and fucking forge the got damn internals.
Good review but 50k for an STI Special edition with little to no power increase is dumb.
do you own a business in japan , then you would understand business cost there
360hp ra wouldn't cost 50k, it would cost 55k then you yanks would whinge more , the s208 with 242kw is 56k in japan
Carbon fiber roof adds more structural rigidity? I'd gather that it was fitted to reduce centre of gravity?
I think its better invested on older one and put high performance parts and customize the subaru and will be unique.
It looks like Gran Turismo going through the corners! Cool.
You can get a brand new Corvette Stingray for well under 50k
wrong
2018 start at 57k
If you can stand 5000 break in miles and $5000 in your pocket.

that's a demo model , not brand new , In Australia I can buy a demo focus rs for 52k aud drive away
Screw fix-a-flat. It can destroy your TPMS sensor, and any tire you use it on immediately becomes unrepairable (at least at any REPUTABLE tire shop), assuming you wish to go that route. I would rather have the spare tire.
Subaru is killing the Impreza reputation fast. Next gen will be a fucking hybrid....
jody024 that still understeer lol
If car companies weren’t so greedy they’d be making more sales and more money on some of these cars with decent prices
Toyota gt86 Gr is 4,600,000 yen , that's more than a Base wrx sti in japan . Track cars have never been cheap
Not a first for Bilstein on Subaru, there was a Legacy GTB 20 years ago.
The brz seemed to be so much more balanced and fun than this WRX STI. Even if it is slow.
This is supposed to be track version, yet understeers? Might as well remove rear wing, it isn't helping.
I'd be really interested on a professional's take on a comparison between a base WRX and WRX STI RA. I have a feeling it would be tough to find the $24k in value in the Type RA.
Was that Jason Fenske sitting in the BRZ in the last frame of the video?
if names were allowed to use in scrabble, i'd take some Ibanez guitar models' names every day! good luck guessing RGR621XPB
There's already 6 piston brakes on the base 2018 STi now
It will be a collectable car some day but I doubt it will not resell at $50k. It's a good car at $45k and damn near a rip off at closer to $50k. This is like the Civic Type R of Subbies. At the right price it's a steal; at the asking price not so much so.
its 45k in Japan
s208 with 242kw is 56k in Japan . Japanese costs are nuts why the evo was axed
More area under the curve? I didn't come here to integrate, Matt.
Still understeering? Ffs Subaru, stop cheapening out on tires and put on Michelin PSSs
Jason Fenske in the BRZ in the background.
New Forza graphics look amazing!!
Ha, at the start Jason from Engineering Explained is in the BRZ behind you.
That wing looks better on the 86. I prefer the look of the stock wing on the sti, just my 2 cents.
is that the guy in Engineering explained in the brz next to him
The comments section is filled with people who have no clue that Subaru has been making a WRX STI Type RA for decades in Japan.
I think the legacy spec b came with bilsteins. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Damn dude you're getting good at interviewing while racing.. Like it's nothing ;)
Try to get hold of a V6 STI and have it compared to the 2017/18 STI.
Very cool. Thanks for the review!
What a joke. Almost $50k for a car that produces 5 MORE horsepower than an already disappointing little sibling. Get it together Subaru
Ben Chesterman seek professional help
Love my STI
Underwhelming for the price difference for sure... But really, just buy what you like and enjoy it. You can compare all you want, there is ALWAYS a faster car than what you have.
"Hey guys if you are like me"... Let me fast forward jkjk
It sounds so weird from the cabin...
Subaru really does need to make a new engine.
TheGameDeity , they did make a new one but they refuse to put it in the sti. Base WRX and BRZ have the new one.
JJ Pablo The reason why the STi still runs the EJ257 is because when this latest generation of Impreza-based STi was released the FA20DIT was still in its infancy and Subaru was still using the STi as a motorsports test mule. They may not be in WRC any more but they are still very much involved as a make in rallying across the world and so they needed an engine that had a very wide aftermarket catalogue which, of course, is the EJ.
looks like a nice performance car. why does it still look like a box from the 90's?
Camaro SS 1LE would have my dollar. (Previous 2015 STi owner here)
