  • Succulents, with their amazing ability to conserve water, have a reputation of being nearly indestructible. For the most part, succulents are very hardy and easy to grow.
But not everyone will find it easy to grow succulents. They are great in climates that are similar to their homelands, but can struggle in frost and snow, as well as in tropical climates.
In this video i'll show how hardy succulents can be and when they can struggle and not live up to their reputation.

I have no proof for it but I am very very sure succulents can take up nutrients in form of the dust in the air that they breathe in through their stomata. If this is true, it should also be very likely that almost all plants can do that, but it only becomes that apparent in succulents because most other plants will just die to a lack of water under these circumstances.

This is such an interesting topic but really difficult to apply to all succulent types. I've read quite a bit of literature on this once upon a time but need to dust them off again coz i've forgotten a lot of it. But i think many succulents grow water repelling features such as farina or have a kind of waxy leaves to try prevent fungal disease and this may reduce their ability to take up nutrients from air. They may still be able to this though, through cuticles, as you suggested, or stomata. Rhipsalis or Epiphyllum definitely are able to take up nutrients and are suitable for foliar feeding. I think i'm going to try dig out some old books and do a video on this!
