As someone who has a shelf dedicated to bottles I hate, I love seeing these videos bc we all have bought bottles that suck and its hard to admit sometimes.
We have a special holiday in my house where we bring together all the bottles we regret buying and drink them while reminiscing about why we bought them in the first place. We call it "Tuesday"
Honestly, I like them both as well. Larceny was a decent drink for me. I actually really liked monkey shoulder too. I prefer larceny over og makers mark. Monkey shoulder is just really easy to drink and the only real problem it has is that there isn't too much going for it as far as tasting notes go. I regret buying Laphroaig 10. I still have 3/4ths of the bottle left after 4 years.
@@rewndudeThe Laphroaig 10 to get is the cask strength. Now, of you don’t like peat smoke, it will of course be even worse than the 10! LOL. I don’t bother with the regular 10.

Funny episode, and on the button. Mine is Blantons ... when I first got into bourbon, it was "expensive" (i.e. in the Atlanta area, about $50 a bottle) and I'd buy it as a treat to celebrate something, because it was my favorite. Not any more.
I regret my first bottle for the same reasons as Dan. It was a russell's reserve single barrel hwich was too hot for me at the time and I was unable to appreciate the different notes. I've since settled into 90-105 proofers, and working my way up
My Oak & Eden "wheat and spire" had a Play-Doh note and Sahara desert mouth-drying finish that was totally off-putting. I have regerts. LOL. BUT - I will add that I took the spiral out and put it in my infinity bottle and did some other stuff with it that seemed to do good things... even though it may have been a placebo effect.
Lol I to have a shelf dedicated to bottles I hate. Mine right now is Willet pot still got me with the fancy bottle has a note that to me is refined fireball.
Dude. Larceny is amazing. In my opinion. My favorite two first bottles was Larceny and Buffalo trace. Then again when I got into bourbon I wasn’t “new” to bourbon.
I buy more Larceny than probably anything else. I find it just perfect for whisky sours. Not a sipping whisky though. Barrel proof is a different story.
Ha, I remember seeing the Basil Hayden's 10 year behind glass at Binny's and being intrigued, but then I remembered that I didn't really like regular BH so wasn't going to pay more to find out if the 10 year was good. Glad I didn't.
I regret Dickel. In the late 2000's I used to drink it all the time. Tasted like pancakes and maple syrup. Now it tastes like Flintstones Vitamins. And that memory of what it tasted like haunts me. I keep giving Dickel a chance because of it, and it always disappoints.
It's nice to see that you're not the only one making occasional whisky mistakes. Also nice to see when you avoided a trap that got others. Great video!
I really enjoyed larceny the one time I had it and I also really enjoy basil Hayden red wine cask finish other than the price but I found it for 45$ instead of 65-70
Great video, guys! It would have been nice if you could have recommended some bottles that would have been corrections to the mistakes you made along the way. Dan mentioned choosing Old Forester Rye would have been better over Pikesville to put his toe in the water starting out, even if he now thinks Pikesville is a better dram. Were there other bottles that you'd recommend to newcomers to Blended Scotch, Finished Whiskey, or Wheated Bourbon? Just using those as examples since you mentioned them in your lists.
Blended scotch: don’t know. Pretty much drink single malt only (especially American Single Malt like Westward Whiskey), Wheated: Maker’s Mark (especially a pick), finished whiskey: Angels Envy (when you outgrow the low proof find a store pick at 110) just my .02
Better late than never...I 100% agree on Elmer T. Lee. I was first getting into bourbon and Elmer T. Lee, Blanton's and Eagle Rare were plentiful and always available. It hurts.
Beginner here. Larceny Small Batch was one of the first bottles I tried - not a fan! Luckily I tried the Elijah Craig Small Batch next and love it. So I'll stick with it.
I have been looking at/considering Pikesville Rye. Glad it wasn't a true "regret" purchase. Larceny... totally agree. Was unimpressed. The Barrel Proof B522 was leaps and bounds better. It's interesting how our palates are so different. I don't like Woodford Reserve straight bourbon very much, but the double oaked really checked all my boxes.
I'm with Sean, I bought a Woodford 5 Malted Stout limited release and wasn't a fan of it. So I've been offered the new historical batch 18 from Woodford at my store a bunch and I just can't bring myself to buy that for 130.
I've drank numerous bottles of OWA, and it's a great wheated bourbon, but Bernheim and Larceny are both really good too, just different Larceny barrel proof is obviously better, same with Bernheim barrel proof, but the others are good, easy drinkers. Folks should try them for themselves. Obviously, Bernheim is wheat whiskey, but in the same area.
I love this video. I love you guys. Please do more videos like this one! Regrets make us better seekers, buyers, and whiskey lovers!!! If every bottle was great, being a whiskey aficionado would be boring.
I was lucky enough to drink MGP Eagle Rare in the late '80's ... then came the Sazerac juice and now we have where they are today. Loved and lost and not sure I'm better for it.
Interesting comment on a poor choice early on ruining a category for you. The first toasted bourbon I tried was BH Toast and I though it pretty bad. Generally avoided them for a few years, even though I had an unopened bottle of Michtners toasted bourbon on the shelf. Finally tried that and realized that all toasted options don’t suck. Still generally don’t look for any of them but at least no longer actively avoid them
Being you guys are in Michigan (South), have you done a video or tried New Holland's Dragon's Milk Origin Bourbon? My beginners that I would say I wouldn't buy again are: Elijah Craig small batch, Evan Williams BIB, Knob Creek 9, and so far after 3 takes , OGD 114 isn't fairing too well with me, too harsh

Dan’s Elmer story is the exact reason I have 5 or 6 Rare Breeds put away. I’m convinced WT is going to run out of 12 year old whiskey at the rate we’re drinking it. Also this isn’t so much a regret and I didn’t buy the bottle but I drank about 2/3 of a bottle of Pappy 20 at a time when I wouldn’t have known the taste of Pappy from Woodford Reserve. The bottle came to me in a very unexpected way, I got it for free, and I knew it was expensive but hadn’t drank nearly enough whiskey to really appreciate why. I drank it with friends and celebrated some milestones in my life and my career so I definitely don’t regret acquiring it or drinking it but I just wish I knew then what I know now. At least I knew enough to hang onto the empty bottle!
I know I don't have a discerning enough palette to be a whiskey reviewer. I appreciate really good whiskey when I drink it, but I don't mind the cheap stuff either. I don't have any problem drinking some Larceny or Bernheim. But I'm the same way with food. I can appreciate eating a fancy meal, but I'm perfectly content eating a ham sandwich.
Besides probably Johnnie Walker Red I think the first actual scotch I had ever tried was Macallan 12, didn't know they were that expensive until I actually saw a bottle at a Safeway.
Just picked up some 1792 and regret nothing! Thanks for the suggestion in your previous videos. Had to cross the border into Michigan to find it, though. Thankfully, that is 9 minutes from my house. Basil Hayden's have all been disappointing to me. I regret of buying the cask finish one.
The statement that chasing limiteds is not the way to go is so true. I have such an easy access to higher tier Buffallo Trace (minus pappy, that one is harder to get) in my linfe of work, and most of them are god awful, especially for the money. I can't understand why people paid $40 for Blanton's, let alone $80. There are so many better bourbons and american whiskeys on the market. One of the most random whiskey love's I've had recently is when a bottle of Burning Chair got damaged and I took it home. What a great bottle for a fairly low price for a bourbon.
I don't think Dan knows what the word Regret means. He seemed to love most of the bottles he listed. Agree on the Oak and Eden, got a bottle here that I can't quite choke down. Cheers guys!

also willing to try a whiskey or bourbon but i do not have a pallete for whiskey want smooth with no burn have so far only found a vodka and tequalia cannot drink neat. Also looking for something not looking to spend alot
Larceny & Monkey Shoulder are in my bar regularly. Mainly cuz they are drinkable and my wife will NOT shut up when I spend more than $60-$70 on a single bottle of anything. She's probably right in reprimanding me...I did just score a bottle of Blantons at my local for msrp - $69.95. We're both good with that.
Based on my experience with BH, i am inclined to disagree with you guys on the BH products. Especially the BH Toast. I sipped that bottle three days at 2 ounce sips. It had a mean bite. However, two weeks of burping the bottle and letting it breathe. BH Toast was a sweet bomb with a flavor i can't help but crave. The cask one also took me for a bit of a ride at first. But it was definitely worth it's last sips toward the end. I would like to see you guys revisit those BH bottles and re review them after they have breathed a bit and tell me you still feel the same.
I regret Elijah Craig 18 yr single barrel. Many bottles had the 1980's on them back in 2003 to 2005. I drank them as though they would always be there and always $45 bucks😪
I'm glad Monkey Shoulder was on the list. I haven't tried scotch in years but never liked it. I really like bourbon and like some ryes. I've been wanting to try scotch again and have heard monkey shoulder is a good intro bottle. What is a better intro scotch....basically a first scotch for a bourbon drinker.
I used to work with a guy who would say, "hindsight is 50/50".. Some of his other sayings... "purrs like equipment" "santa-size" instead of sanitize, & he described how he had to pass a kidney stone through his uterus. 😂
I really like Bourbon (enough that I watch a ton of Bourbon Tube like this channel), but I LOVE Scotch. Monkey Shoulder was one of my first Scotch bottles as well, but on the advice of Scotch 4 Dummies rather than Whisky Tribe. It's OK, but I agree there are far better intros.
Sean needs to get a brain...Monkey Shoulder is simple and pleasant, with a banana bread flavor. It mixes really well and is under $30. Friends keep it on the shelf for when I come around as they dont feel like it is a burden.
That Oak&Eden bottle looks like it has a Baby Ruth in it... I'm with Dan, I totally have Bernheim on my list along with a bunch of craft whiskey gimmicks like Climax Whiskey (aged "24 hours" - no joke), Matchstick bourbon, and Three Crosses bourbon. Thankfully VA redeemed itself with a legit hitter: John J Bowman.
I don't get the "hate" that seems to be somewhat popular over the last year or so when it comes to Monkey Shoulder. I stayed away from it for a good while because of so many reviewers saying it is over rated, or that it was disappointing. I find it very distinct and unique among scotches, and I find it to be an absolutely delicious every day drinker that is easily shared with friends not as much into whisk(e)ys. I am very diverse in what I enjoy and drink regularly, from Redbreast 12 to Laphroaig 10. Wildturkey 101 to Pappys 15, and Monkey Shoulder is a really good daily sipper that I am constantly sharing with friends and enjoying!
My first disappointing purchase was Michter’s unblended American. Michter’s bourbon was one of my very first bottles, as a gift, and I loved it. I heard nothing but amazing things about the unblended American, and for $45 I found it to be incredibly simple and boring, with a flavor profile I just didn’t like. If I’d paid $20 for it, I’d be like hey no biggie it was cheap. But I’ve had $20 bottles with more interesting flavor development than that for over double the price
Funny how everyone's tastes are different. I loved Larceny Small Batch early on. Mine was a store pick though. I've moved on to barrel proof and haven't had SB in a while, but have good memories of it. However, I just got an Oak & Eden amburana spire and dont like it at all. It tastes artificially flavored.
Not a fan of blended scotch if you can’t get it right with a single malt your doing it wrong. Also not a fan of heavy peat but again everyone has a different palette. The only thing I would like to see is higher ABV in all whiskey across the board.
My intro was Highland Park, which is still one of the better intros to Scotch in my opinion. Others like Balvennie Doublewood are excellent as well, maybe a Talisker 10 if you want to dip your toes into peat.

I love that you beeped out the first F word, but kept the second one in there.
Always enjoyable, but the ETL rant today was great 😎
I’m singing Bad Case of Loving You in my head while Dan talks about Elmer.
Yall paid $80 for oak and eden? I get it for $45 from my local store, and the same batch somehow.
Monkey shoulder is great. It's s good price and my first was Belvenie doublewood. I'd drink monkey over it any day.
Man that Woodford Chocolate is so good. I agree that the price isn't ideal but imo it's great whiskey.
I used to work with a guy who would say, "hindsight is 50/50".. Some of his other sayings... "purrs like equipment" "santa-size" instead of sanitize, & he described how he had to pass a kidney stone through his uterus. 😂
Funny. I knew a guy who used to say “as useless as tits on a board,” and “to all intense purposes.” Maybe they were related.
Elmer being on this list is definitely just funny. I too wish it was as available as I remember it to be back in 2014 😞
I really like Bourbon (enough that I watch a ton of Bourbon Tube like this channel), but I LOVE Scotch.
That smirnoff ice is getting mighty CLOSE!
Much like tattoos, every bottle tells a story of a journey. No ragerts.
End of that video was funny af 😂
Your first small batch was not small batch. It was a single barrel.
I've had a couple good larceny picks as well! Just the normal shelf stock wasn't for us
Larceny is so good
noooooo! Monkey Shoulder is the BEST for cocktails! It mixes so well!
Not a fan of blended scotch if you can’t get it right with a single malt your doing it wrong. Also not a fan of heavy peat but again everyone has a different palette. The only thing I would like to see is higher ABV in all whiskey across the board.
What do your recommend in lieu of Monkey Shoulder to get int Scotch? And was so disappointed with Larceny too...
My intro was Highland Park, which is still one of the better intros to Scotch in my opinion. Others like Balvennie Doublewood are excellent as well, maybe a Talisker 10 if you want to dip your toes into peat.
Mmmm. Larceny is one of my favorites
Good information.
I love the monkey shoulder granted I don't have very refined taste but it turned me towards other things than just bourbon
