  • An overview of the New American Standard Bible Side-Column Reference Bible (ISBN 9781581351125, 1-58135-112-7), followed by observations about the NASB as a translation. I'll also provide evidence that the 1977 edition is superior to the 1995 update.
    Some refer to this Bible as "the Judge."

    I love NASB 95, and never questioned Rev 13:1. Now I'm going to write in a footnote with your comments on it. It looks like the LSB is sticking with dragon too. Great review! That French milled paper is fantastic!

      ESV does the same but puts it at the end of chapter 12. It does note the "I stood" in the margin, at least on biblegateway it does.

    Thank you for the review. I am getting older and wish this paper was used on the new editions. I am currently using the 14 pt. font version but the bleed through is significant. If you would ever consider parting with it, please message me. I could use this as my daily study tool for life. Thanks again for the review.

      Thanks for commenting, Greg. It's too bad Lockman's quality fell off so dramatically. I plan to hold onto this particular Bible, but occasionally they come up for sale on eBay. At least that's what I infer from posts I've seen in the Everything Bibles group on Facebook.

      Mine is the Leathertex printing. I've been considering getting a calfskin edition. Christian Book sells slightly imperfect copies for about $99 which is a really good price.
      I love this formatting and I haven't been able to find another with the same format.

      It's about $115 at evangelicalbible.com . But I fear the current calfskin has the blue paper. I reviewed the 2017 printing in genuine leather here: ua-cam.com/video/MBz6mYcEhgg/v-deo.html

      Daric - I haven't seen either the 2013 or the 2017 calfskin in person. But, based on the reviews I have seen, the 2013 had problems. If I were you, I'd read as many reviews as I could. The older (pre 2017) reviews at evangelicalbible.com seem to be mixed (I see comments about the 2013's flimsy cover), while the newer reviews look pretty negative.

      I wish I knew. They're scarce. We can hope that after the next revision of the NASB -- which is supposed to be published perhaps in '19 or 20 -- Lockman will get serious about publishing quality Bibles once more, and they'll come out with something similar (with high quality in both binding and paper).

      Paul - that's an older copy of the Nestle-Aland Greek-English New Testament. The Greek is the Nestle-Aland 27th edition (NA27). The English (which passes across the screen rapidly) is the 1971 RSV. The 28th edition of the Nestle-Aland Greek New Testament (NA28) reads the same as NA27 at that spot.

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  5 років тому +1

      @@radical7663 - The NA27 is an older edition, so you can find it fairly cheap on eBay sometimes. My NA28 with dictionary's ISBN is 9781619700468. But I see another edition at Amazon: 9783438051608 also. There are also Greek-English editions of the NA28, but they don't include dictionaries.
      You might want to consider the UBS5 instead. Some UBS5 editions come with a dictionary. Instead of a Greek-English edition, UBS5 has a reader's edition. The Greek text in NA28 and UBS5 is the same, but the critical apparatus differs. UBS5 shows more witnesses for each variant reading, but it lists fewer variant readings.

    This is such a great review. Would you say you prefer the NKJV to the NASB? Just curious as I'm on the fence about a good companion translation for my ESV.

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  5 років тому +1

      I do like the NKJV a bit more than the NASB. But do you want to use a New Testament based on the _Textus Receptus?_ If the source text of the New Testament is important to you, the NASB is a better choice. But why not go with a loose/dynamic equivalence translation as a companion?

    • @kal-el-vinist1507
      @kal-el-vinist1507 5 років тому +1

      @@RGrantJones I'm not one of those "you can't get the gospel from the NIV" people. However, I do have a general dislike of the philosophy underpinning dynamic equivalent translations. The very nature of this type of translation requires a more heavy-handed interpretive approach to the text.

      @RGrantJones  6 років тому

      You're right about Cambridge, no doubt. The red in that '77 Holman NASB isn't that bad, where it's printed well. (But it's a bit faint in places.) I've found that if I put a piece of black construction paper behind the page, the red letters don't burn my retinas that badly. I'm astounded that physiologists haven't tried to discover why some people don't mind red letters -- actually like them! -- and others of us feel **physical pain** trying to read them.

      Great, thank you for the video and your response. I enjoy reading the 1901 ASV for study because, from what I've heard, it's probably the most literal English translation. It's kind of hard to find copies of it, though!

    yes it would destroy dispensational theology to see how many times God refers to Israel as being but a part of ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ! From Deut4:10 's specific reference to the day at Horeb being the day of the ἐκκλησίᾳ (ekklesia) to the dozens of other references specifying that God's ἐκκλησίᾳ Israel was a mixed multitude from the moment they left Egypt (Ex 12:38, 48-51) until the day Jesus called them His lost sheep and healed a daughter from Canaan to prove it, when He confirmed "I am not sent BUT for the lost sheep of Israel" (Matt 15:22-26) and He heals a Canaanite!!! This is an allergy of itching ears induced by the anachronism of Hebrew primacy!

    I do not know why I was under the impression that the 2020 translates YHWH as Yahweh rather than LORD? Apparently, it does not from what I saw looking at copy in Barnes and Nobel. In my opinion other than translating certain passages as brothers and sisters instead of brothers and only Son in John 3:16 instead of only begotten there is no significant improvement in translation from the 1995 and 1977 versions. I like the 95 over the 77 because they did not translate the Psalms using old KJV English. I prefer uniformity. If I desire to read Old English, I will use the KJV.
    I also repudiate gender neutral language. This is an assault on the creative purpose of God in Maleness and Femaleness. Men and women were not to be equals in the redemptive economy of God and in the created order. There is a place of subordination between the man and the woman just as there is an place of subordination within the Godhead in relation to the covenant of grace. Another nice evaluation by the man I deem to be the prince of Bible overview. Well done R Grant Jones. Very informative.

    The NASB is lacking in both accuracy and literal qualities, both of which it allegedly has more than any other version according to the publisher. Publishers use many strategies to sell Bibles.
