Well this is appealing to people because of the Fuji colors, the viewfinder, the design, the size, the lens...People don't like the 2/3 sensor, it's definitely a drawback but overall it's still a pretty solid camera and fun to use even tho it's not apsc or ff

I agree. I'm a fan of all cameras and love the X30 but a GX85 is essential a very similar body design but has a MFT sensor and interchangeable lenses.

@jmtphotographymedia absolutely, I only switched to Fuji from m-43 because the cost of lenses was ridiculous back in 2017 the used Market isn't what it is now. I would definitely get a lumix lx100 over a fuji x100(x)

Cool video, Lucy. I bought an X20 4 years ago for a backpacking trip in the Alps. It quickly became my daily carry. It's fun, handles easily, and captures nice images. It was nice to see the model get some more love on UA-cam.

I picked up an X20 early this year. It is a ton of fun. The shooting experience as well as photographic output just can't be replicated entirely by modern cameras. The lens itself has it's own character with ethereal macro shots, imperfections at the edges, and the global render of the image quality. Composing for its 12mb image and sensor quality provides its own challenges and rewards. The other X10 and X30 models all bring something interesting and there are some good threads on dpreview covering the differences.
If someone wanted more direct control over the photo triangle, with an even brighter lens, larger sensor w/12mb resolution I highly recommend the Lumix LX100. From 2014 but is much more advanced but even easier to access, with plenty of direct controls. And of course, all the other Fujifilm camera are superb. Enjoyed your video and first time seeing your channel.

I really enjoyed this video, and you shared some real bangers. The X20 was my gateway drug into the Fujifilm system. I loved the ergonomics, portability, the lens and the film simulations. The files were a bit "brittle" in my opinion, though, which I think is due to the rather minuscule sensor size. It would've been nice to have held on to mine, but I sold it to make room for the X-E1 with 35/1.4 and 18-55 "kit" lens, which I still have and use a decade later. In fact, I've since owned and used the X100S, X-T2, X-T3 and X-S10, but I'll never sell my X-E1.

Thanks for dedicating an own video to this awesome camera. I think, the X20 is one of the best cameras Fuji ever made and it can still keep up easily with newer models. What I like most is the retro design with having an optical viewfinder. That’s really unique and almost gives a feel like using a Leica. They unfortunately gave up on that in the succeeding model, the X30. So, the X20 is still something and so much fun to use, providing a really excellent image quality.

I think casual hobbyists and those just coming into the game have finally realized that cameras from 10 to 11 years are already more than capable. I would like to add that our avenues to share our images are 90 percent on phones, digital tablets, and computer screens which are tiny to not so big. Very very few print pictures these and still those old cameras are already capable of creating up to small poster size prints.

I bought mine many years ago, when they came out. It's been a fantastic camera and it had the size, features and image quality I was looking for at the time. The lens doesn't get smashed up as it retracts and overall the battery life is good. The optical viewfinder is good but doesn't show the whole image being captured. I shoot 4:3 and always crop the image after, as you get some 'wiggle' room. Auto and aperture priority are excellent but I found manual a bit unwieldy. A nice feature but not very intuitive. Macro modes are very good and it's got a self timer. As a travel camera, there's not much to dislike. I still use it a lot. I enjoyed your review, you did it justice.

X20 has to be my fav of the Fujis. I really wish they would try an X40. My number one wish list would be more bokeh to make it a little more portrait friendly, whether thats a larger sensor or larger aperture lens. Built in ND filter, Keep the control ring of the X30. Though I love the OVF, if it had an EVF it wouldnt be a deal breaker for me.

November 2023 and I just sold my grossly underused X20. Was shocked to see that good used ones, like mine, are, at ten years of age, retailing for £400, which is what I originally paid for it. I got 25% less for it today from a camera dealer, which is fair enough as they cover all collection and delivery costs and provide six month’s warranty when they sell it on after checking its condition. In my case though the Lumix GX 80 has long taken over the X20’s former duty. Perhaps I should have kept the X20? However I hope that whoever buys it, complete with original box and contents, will adore it and use it carefully as I did.

You need to check out the Fuji X-E2. It's got a newer sensor (the Xtrans II) but it captures the film look like no other digital sensor.. Also has even more of a film camera control experience than this one does. Paired with the right lens, it's a wonderful little camera. I know it's sacriligious but I shoot it primarily in black and white and it just knocks it out of the park. The color shots I've taken with it are also like no other. The pop up flash is even cooler since you can sorta aim it up and down for a bit more control.

Great video, and welcome to the wonderful world of the early Fujifilm cameras. If you really want to get the rangefinder vibe, see if you can beg, borrow or steal an X-E1. ( Or you could just buy one. ) With it's early X TRANS sensor, you'll get bucket loads of atmosphere. The EVF is way over to the left, so it's just like a film rangefinder in use. You've already got the lens, so just get the X-E1 body. Then the fun really starts, because if you buy a couple of cheap dumb adapters and couple some vintage Japanese or even better some Russian or East German glass, you'll be in seventh heaven with what you get. I've currently got a Carl Zeiss 58mm f2 Biotar up front on my X-E1, and the results are wonderful. Just remember that a 50mm film lens is roughly a 75mm on a 4/3rds sensor. A great low cost option is the Pentacon 30mm f3.5. It's tiny, dirt cheap and looks great on the Fuji. It'll be somewhere between a 40 mm and 50 mm equivalent on the Fuji sensor. The Fuji has a dedicated 'shoot without lens' setting, which is for using old lenses, and an ability to 'store' different focal length settings. Add to that the focus peak capability to ensure accurate focus and it's a breeze. You can even set a lens at F11 and go zone focus mad. As you may guess, I'm quite a fan of this type of photography. I'm still a film first devotee, but this route means endless, cheap adventures open up for you.

I'm a Fuji user since the X-T1 came out and I still use a X-Pro 1 with my analog lenses. I agree that there is something about the first X-Trans sensors. When I look at my pictures then I can usually tell which picture was taken with the old sensor and which picture was taken with my X-T4 even when I use the same lens and post processing. The images from the old sensors always look more organic or analogue for the lack of a better word.

I just got an X20 a few days ago and have been testing. I found the JPEGs sort of looked like the fine details were "smudged". Then I tried some raw files in RawTherapee, and they came out beautifully. Details were preserved, and there was some noise, but it was the good kind that, to my eyes, resembles film grain and I prefer over the smudges. I'll definitely be sticking with raw shooting. (And RawTherapee also has its own extensive set of film simulations using CLUT files.)

After the X100V supply and demand issue went public, the attention generated a new demand for any digital model that resembled a Fuji rangefinder style camera. Next UA-camrs were pointing out that a Sony A6xxx or NEX could like a X100V if you attached a Sony 20mm F2.8 pancake lens to any Sony APS-C body. That resulted in massive price increase to used pancake lenses from all manufacturers'. Finally, interest and prices increased on the digicam cameras you like to shoot with. Next came the release of TTArtian's 27mm/40mm pancake lens for Fuji, Sony, and Lieca. Because of all this, I predict Rokinon, Sigma, and Tamron are busy getting to release a 40mm equivalent pancake lens.

These older cameras always tempt me. This X20 seems like a cult classic as well as the X70 which I've always fancied. The thing that stops me picking one up isn't the dated technology or even that they've held their price annoyingly well. It's that they're old, physically. A 10 year old circuit board or sensor or processor seems like a bit of a ticking time bomb in terms of longevity. Film cameras you can pass along to your kids or whatever but these digital cameras we all use have a shelf-life. (great photos btw).

Just got my X20 (for approx. 150 USD) and now my collection is complete, have all three models of the small sensor line (X10 / X20 / X30). Have to admit, using their optical viewfinders is pretty challenging due to heavy parallax error and +/-80% coverage. It it still tons of fun though and I seem to prefer X10/X20 over the X30, which is theoretically a superior model.

AUD800 to (believe it or not) AUD1,500!! Then I checked current prices for the three X-Trans 1 bodies I have: X-Pro1, X-E1 and X-M1. All are selling for way more than I spent. The X-E1 was the one that hooked me on the Fuji X system. I bought it brand new with an 18mm f2 lens about ten years ago for less than a second-hand body alone now sells.

I love the advancement of technology, but many of the newest sensors are too precise. I know that may sound weird, but one of the things I appreciate about people's photos is the lack of precision, a more artistic composition of the colors or lighting. I guess I am saying that I like photos are more akin to art -- maybe why I love B&W photos so much.

There are many digital cameras appreciating in value - as strange as that sounds.
Olympus Pen F (the digital MFT camera) is not getting cheaper, it's getting more expensive.
The Panasonic Lumix GM5 is incredibly expensive and only getting more so.
The Nikon Df is going up in value.
I bought up most of my 35mm cameras in the years 2005 to 2010 at dirt cheap prices. I do believe we are in that same period of time for high quality, earlier digital cameras. Just like I bought up analog cameras starting about 20 years ago, I started gathering high quality, earlier and unique digital cameras.

I bought this in 2020 with my then partner because I needed a zoom lens but didn't want to pay +$300 just for a lens on my XT1. Fast forward to now, people mistake it for an x100. It goes with me when I don't want to lug the XT1 (not that it's a big camera) and I can't let it go for nostalgia's sake. Never thought this "throwaway" camera would ever become popular. Neither did I predict that the XT1 would become popular either

One more issue I found recently was night time photography. Except the viltrox 13 1.4, I haven't found among cheaper lenses to use for night time. Other than xt3 or xt4, it is hard to use viotrox's lens since it will be immensely front heavy. These smaller fuji cameras are good for the 23, 35 and 50 f2s (may be 33 1.4?? It is not as compact as the three primes) and fuji 16 f2.8 vs 13 f1.4 (viltrox), viltrox is the overall winner for me. Also for street, 13/23 only gives the wide view of aperture, 33/35 is semi portrait (not completely for street unless you are a super skilled photographer which I am not) and 50 mm is for portrait. Unless you are rich no point to talk of other lenses, may be sigma 85 mm 1.4 is also OK, but how much will you use an 85? I think in budget 16-80 is OK. I got it for 800 AUD from HongKong. That is the most expensive lens I personally own cause there is no point in having 20 lenses. 6 lenses max. I wanted it to be 4. But I think 13, 23, 35 and 50 primes are fair and 18-55 and 16-80 mm. Suffice for 99 % of photoshoot. For wildlife, I take loan of 70-300 zoom lenses and a 90 mm prime.

This reminded me: I spent nearly the whole year of 2016 in hospital. During that time I bought a Fuji X70. I opened the box, took a couple shots and gave it back to my wife to store it away to be used when I'm out of the hospital. And than I totally forgot about it over a couple of other cameras I bought in that year (I didn't know by then that I will stay several months more in that room). Now I have actually a virtually new X70 in a drawer in my bedroom. As a Fuji fanboy I could probably list a lot of nerdy things, but honestly, the only reason I got mine is because they're such good lookers. And, of course, my first original x100 was the only digital camera I understood, because I could use it just like my old Pentax K1000 - the fear of buttons, as you said. The x20, as cute as it is, still has that satanic mode dial!
But they surely are fashion accessoires, and I truly enjoyed my first shoots with models who praised my camera choice! :D
Also, easy to get into any concert, most bouncers think they're film cameras and don't care.
That x100 has only got up in price too as it seems, I bought it in 2013 for 500€ and never saw it dip below that anymore. However, photo nerds watching too many UA-cam videos aren't always acting reasonable and push prices for the weirdest things... no wonder film has become so expensive. :)

Hi Lucy Interesting vid. Sorry just needed clarification is the focus on The X20 a wheel at the back or on the lens and is it accurate like the autofocus. The other thing is The X30 could be a good option? your thoughts on that. Thanks

    • @LucyLumen
      @LucyLumen  Рік тому

The autofocus works ok for environmental stuff but isn't as good as the latest and greatest for moving faces etc. The manual focus is a wheel on the back on the X20 so only something you would use once again for a still shot. The X30 has a control wheel on the lens I haven't used one yet but might be a better option if that's important to you plus it has an EVF which some might prefer? I think the X20 works best when you treat it more like a point and shoot and leave it on the intelligent auto setting. Well for me anyway.

It forced me to switch to phone photography with pixel phones. I mean how many batteries will you carry? 4/5? Keep them always charged! It was an extra hazard for me. Used unused battery compartments in the bag. Making sure you put them always in the right part after use. Frustrating. Now i have two XT4 bodies, two extra batteries, and I can use them for around 6-8 at boost mode and hdr settings (hybrid shooting). I might get an xt5 after a few years since it is very expensive now when I will sell off one of my 4's and get a 5.

Digi with low resolutions, less automatic modes and a slow handling and long response time after pressing the button. Less perfections and similar colors in comparison with film of course.

Simple, a good picture is good glass, good sensor and good processing. Everything else is just a feature. These older cameras always had that, the companies while making improvements were just selling us mostly incremental software features mainly in processing speed. Since most of us were just enthusiasts, we weren't really that demanding on our cameras. Outside of the content creators, we were mostly still shooters, and we really didn't get a benefit from the readout of, say, an rx100 with the stacked sensor. Now that the companies have all but abandoned the p&s market, these gems have become oh so prized. Even one of my favorite shooters is the 6 elph330 or ixus 255, depending. We always wanted these cameras but not at the then current prices they were asking.
