I agree with you, I have never liked to use range finder cameras, I like WYSIWYG, so I had SLR analog cameras before I got DSLR cameras, now when I have mirrorless cameras with EVF, I fell "like home" with my cameras ! I think with a fixed Lens camera like the over hyped Fuji X100 series cameras, you are too limited, I like to have several Lenses for different purposes. I would like to see a Fuji X-E5 with the new 40 megapixels sensor and an upgraded 5.8+ mega dots EVF with a higher magnification and a larger battery, THAT would be a perfect Camera !

The Fuji 27mm is a gem, small and very sharp, I love this lens on my X-T20, the never version with the aperture ring is my most film era like lens ... and makes the camera so stealthy

I can't agree more, the X-E1 is an overlooked gem! I picked one up used a few years ago but ended up (unintentionally) killing it on a kayak outing. I missed it so much that I searched for a replacement, even though I also own an XT100T and XT3. Now it's my everyday camera with some TTArtisan lenses. Love your channel and creativity with both film and digital. I'm an old school film shooter since the 1970s but have embraced digital as well. Photography is all about trying new things and sometimes new is old and old is new.

Wow, that's exactly my story: x-e1 as a first digital camera, fd lenses and all. Although I think I got mine around 2015.
However, I really think this whole shabang with "the magic of the first x-trans sensor" is vastly overblown. Compared to x-t2 I currently use, x-e1 is slow, has a terrible viewfinder and there's really no real difference in color.

Hello Lucy! This was my first Fuji camera as well. Then I sold it because the shutter looked a bit crappy. And the autofocus was relatively slow. Then I bought an x100v, which I love in many ways, I love the discretion of the leaf shutter, the greatness of the improved OVF, the high noise tolerance of the sensor, but something is still missing.... Too perfect, too sterile. I really like the x100v, but now you've convinced me to buy an xe1 again. Its "dirtiness", its simplicity is closer to me. Thanks for your videos, I really like your approach to the subject. Daniel from Hungary!

The X-E1 is a mighty fine camera, one of the best designed by Fuji. I always found the EVF a tad too small for me personally though. I still shoot the X-Pro1 which I adore, combined with the 18mm f2 it's a fantastic everyday carry. That lens is not optically perfect, but I love the render of it. I love the framelines as well on the X-Pro1, but I also shoot a Leica M9, so I'm used to it I guess.

The EX-1 was my first Fuji and from an image quality perspective I don’t think there’s much to separate it from my current X100V, but I really struggled with its shutter lag and overall responsiveness. I think the X-T1 is the value play if you’re considering an early generation Fuji

    • @milesian1

I have and use the XE1. The reason I want the XE2 is the addition of PDAF. It is faster and more accurate autofocusing. Like many Fuji bodies, there is a premium that must be paid unless you can wait for a deal that may or may not show up.

Lucy great to see you getting more into some of the classic digital Fuji gear. If you enjoy the XF 27mm (~40mm equivalent) focal length, I highly recommend checking out a manual lens - the KamLan 27mm F1.4. I had this lens along with Fuji XF27mm. Yes the Fuji is compact, but the KamLan offers quite a bit that makes a top choice, even over other Fuji classics like the XF 35 1.4. The KamLan has a bit more length, and its manual focus throw is quick. The larger aperture if very handy and the KamLan can focus much closer than the XF 27mm. The colors are more vibrant on the KamLan, and it has quite a bit of characterful bokeh at 1.4 with great sharpness stopped down at 2.8 and up. I sold, but will probably pick it up. My Fujifilm X20 recently bit the dust from a small drop but I managed to score a X-T2 (with 2 free lenses!) in mint condition. That body style is not much bigger than the X-E series, though I run it with a grip and some heavier lenses. The X-E3 is also a great camera, though it may not have the early X-trans sensor, it is very responsive, with a great set of intuitive controls (even more than its successor) which may be desirable for some.

I recently got this camera together with a Fuji 16-55, Fuji 55-210 and a xm1 for 350€. After testing all that gear, I sold the two lenses and the xm1 for about 450€ and only kept the XE1. And what can I say - it's such a lovely camera! A few weeks back, I went to my local film shop and got a used disposable camera for free (because they would throw them away anyway after taking out and developing the film). Then I opened this disposable camera and screwed/cut out the lens part, drilled a hole in my body cap for the Xe1 and glued the plastic lens into the body cap - et voilà - there is my new lens.
And honestly this was such a refreshing experience - fixed focus, fixed aperture and fixed focal length meant that I could solely concentrate on the light and composition of my images.
Furthermore, even though the lens is 35 mm on APS-C(→ equivalent to about 50mm on full frame) this lens does not stick out at all and provides a low profile appearance perfectly fitted for street photography.
Sure this plastic lens won't be tack sharp, especially in the edges but center sharpness is actually okay, if one isn't planning to crop into the image afterwards anyway.
That's why I highly recommend trying this lens hack out - it's free and still produces stunning images! - I personally chose a Kodak Funsaver disposable camera lens to do this, but one can do this with any sort of disposable camera.
To sum up this comment, I'd like to ask everyone reading this what his favourite Fuji Film Sim Settings are, cause I'd really like to get some inspiration :D
(Preferably for the Fuji XTrans 1 Sensor - which is shared by the xpro1, xe1, xm1)
I've tested a few custom ones so far but realized, that I completely unexpectedly prefer the colours of the Raw Files the most :0
So far I'd say if there'd be a film sim looking exactly like the raw files (which dont look like Provia btw.) I probably would choose that one.

I sold an X100T, because of lack of use (I own X-Pro1, X-T20 & X-T2). I like the smallness of the X100T, and its style. I went looking for an affordable X-E2, but never found one. BUT I stumbled on a Fuji I wasn't familiar with; the X-M1. I found one in excellent condition and bought it for $220. It's a great small camera, and since I have a silver version, it has style too. I have paired it with a 27mm TTArtisan f2.8. They make a great combo. Thanks for another nice video.

My first Fuji camera was the original X100 special edition. However, I have always shot RAW because the camera is so good it deserves to have all the details retained in the files it produces and not have jpg compression throw them out. Even so, Fuji know a thing or two when it comes to processing their files and their jpg files are very good I have to say. Since 2014 I have been using the X Pro 1 and couldn't bear to be without it. The RAW files are sublime and need very little done to them (or as much as you want to do to them). I like your images, so good luck and continue to enjoy your photography in whatever way suits you best.

I started shooting with Fujifilm a few years ago with a used X-T2 & X-T20. Through my experience with them, checking out every other camera in the line, I decided to give the legendary X-E1 sensor a shot. Lord almost everything about the camera except for the lagging shutter & focusing, both just slow enough to be noticeably annoying. Half of my shooting is with vintage manual lenses, so when doing so the focusing problem obviously didn’t come into play, but other wise did. I took a chance after a short while by also purchasing an X-E2, which solved all of the problems I was having with the X-E1. Faster, more accurate focusing (the X-E1 one has inferior contrast only technology), noticeably less shutter lag, better rear screen, etc., & most importantly, although some may disagree, I like the second generation sensor as much as the first, and it has better dynamic range to boot. This camera to me is the E model line sweet spot. I ‘ve since sold the X-E1 & X-T20, the X-E2 now being my favorite Fujifilm camera. One more thing you might want to check out, the most overlooked gem of a bargain in my opinion, the way too often discarded without a trial plastic Fujifilm 15-45 kit lens. Unlike many other manufacturers, Fujifilm doesn’t compromise with the glass on their cheaper plastic lenses, just the cheaper plastic itself. This minuscule zoom weighs practically nothing & gives an effective zoom range of a nifty 22.5 to 67.5, excellent quality especially at the wide angle setting. I also own and shoot with the Fujifilm 27mm pancake with the aperture ring, which I also love, but just alerting folks to the under utilized zoom option available, which is fairly easy to give a shot to, as they’re abundantly cheap in mint, unused condition on EBay.

Another excellent vid. Totally love your zero BS "I donʻt care what the others say, this is how i like it" message. Love the photos youʻre getting out the camera, too. I never gave it enough love. On the x100 bodies, I could never gel with them either until I turned on the electronic shutter sound. Itʻs the same for me, I gotta HEAR that I took a photo. I can get by with the lowest volume setting and quietest sound choice, but I couldnʻt get on with the silence of the leaf shutter.

At my current level(pure beginner) i think shooting film, especially at the current prices, would just be a massive waste of money and hinder any learning that would occur otherwise..

I have the E1, E2s and E3. I love shooting vintage film lenses mounted on the E1, slow AF is not a factor then. B&W can really look good SOOC, I use a combination of changing the hightlight and shadow settings and there's another little known trick you can use. You can change tonality of B&W by using K adjustments to WB. You should try playing around with that.

I love the X-E1 so much that I bought a second one that was converted to IR. The X-E2 has a slightly different image vibe, but the viewfinder is far better for use with adapted lenses. My standard travel setup is the X-E2 with the pancake and either an Olympus PEN F 40mm f1.4 or Jupiter 3. Tip: Night shots with the Jupiter 3 and X-E2 are the closest thing I have seen to Kodachrome out of a digital camera. There's just something about that glass.

on the original x100 you can turn off all of the information in the optical viewfinder , you can get parrallax correction and you can even turn off the back screen to get a true film experince , now for the colors , you can edit those colors in camera with film sims 5 of them , then change white balance and even choose jpeg size , now to xe-1 has the best sensor fujifilm made , from the x pro 1 but , the viewfinder is too small for most of us , but great video ! you have to try the x100 with flash as the leaf shutter is amazing with flash and the built in nd filter

Very nice photos. Looks a lot like your film shots.
I always prefer to turn off shutter sounds on digicams, but I do enjoy the shutter sound of some of my mechanical rangefinder film cameras - and the shutter sound of my Nikon DSLR cameras.
I have been quite tempted to pick up an old Fujifilm digital camera - I found an X-10, but I decided against getting it at the moment. I have already spent a small fortune on camera gear, and odds are, my financial situation will get worse in 2023.
Sounds like springtime might be strike time as well around here with how the 2023 CBA negotiations are going so far, and that would hurt - a lot.
Anyway, thank you for another interesting video.

Battery life was good but we ordered some new batteries for it. The battery life using the original X100 was pretty bad to be honest so definitely worth buying a fresh battery of two for these older Fuji cameras I think.

Hi Lucy! It's one of my favourite cameras from Fuji. I sold mine but I think I'll buy another one. I had the Pro -1 and did not like it, because I don't like OVFs and the E1 has a better EVF. I'll stick with the XH1 and XE1. XH1 for the wonderful EVF and shooting experience, and easy of use, focus peaking and everything, even if the XH1 is to big and heavy for me. The 27mm from Fuji makes beautiful romantic photos with beautiful bokeh, allowing to perceive what is behind the subject, but in a beautiful way. My favourite Takumar is not the 1.4, but the f/4, macro. It also makes a wonderful bokeh, has a lot of character and it is very sharp. Colors are really wonderful. You have to try it. If I want bokeh and beauty, I choose the 7Artisans 35mm 0.95. It makes a beautiful marriage with Fuji. EX1 has some caveats, almost all of them are not important. The only one that is really important for me is about the litle poor EVF, but I can work with it. That's why I sold it, but I have to get it back. Oh, I was forgeting, The EX1 is the most beautiful camera, after the X20 !Thanks for the tips, I'll check the links.

made more than 125.000 clicks on this, preferred it over my x-t2 as my go to cam in my daypack. Only after some accidents manual focus and later evf did not work, so I replaced it with a 2nd hand x-e2. must say for photographers - if you don't need fast af, or fast framerate - this cam looks cool - "is it a Leica?" - and gets the job done.

I agree, these 16MB Sensors had a very unique character. But at least Acros did a very good job later, to get a lot of character back and worth the upgrade, at least for me. Currently I explore the T5, lets see... I only did get the X-E3 a try...but I need either a flexible LCD or a bigger EVF, and the X-E does not have either :/

While I truly love the form factor, I'm not 100% convinced of the camera itself. I mean, I've taken it on several trips, but am not wowed by three camera as opposed to the Nikon. Imo the xe2 is the perfect upgrade to the xe2. After that, all Fuji rangefinders got downgrades in UX. The only upgrades were to sensor, autofocus. One step forward two steps back. You get some more megapixels but lose the s c m switch. Get better ux around film sim in q menu... But lose the "template" nature of them that applies them to your "BASE" config and tweak from there

Never agreed as much with any other video of yours. I own both the original x100 and the x-e1, only started using them a little closer to their release date, around '13 and '14, and the X-E1 is certainly the camera I enjoyed most overall. I still absolutely love the x100, it was the one camera that completely restarted photography as my hobby and it's still with me in my bag wherever I go - but I never really thought about upgrading it because the OVF is a totally wasted feature on me, I simply don't use it and shouldn't pay half of the camera's price for it. And since I'm very much into portraits I wanted an interchangable lens camera too, so the X-E1 was the logical follower.
I've been through all the lens stuff with it too, from native over adapting, and while I had a lot of fun adapting (especially once I got a focal reducer) it was just too bulky for my taste, so today the X-E1 lives on as a carrier of cheap chinese manual lenses, and these are really fun.
Both cameras are great conversation starters, especially when working with models I got a lot of praise for their looks, hehe. The X-T* line is a huge letdown in that aspect.
And finally of course, the two ProNeg film simulations are the most underrated simulations of all, they are my absolute favourite - standard for portrait, high for the rest, and then some monochrome.
