I never thought Yoshi being an easy mode was a bad thing. I don't think Mario Wonder is a difficult enough game to where playing as Yoshi feels like you're cheating things, especially when the badges exist and already break a lot of challenges. Plus if you really wanna challenge yourself you can try a Yoshi speedrun where being knocked back by enemies loses time and is actually punishing, you can try doing a damageless run or other self imposed challenges.
The real "cheats" are online play, where you can be anywhere in the level, and the standees and other players can just help you skip the real challenge of a level. And I personally don't see that as necessarily a bad thing
@NCozy Good ideas, for sure. I still wish easy mode was a toggle though... difficulty through self-imposition can be great, but most people just want to play the game normally and still feel like they're getting a good enough challenge. As someone who really enjoys Yoshi's Story, I'm no stranger to self-imposed challenges, but for some reason it bothers me more in this game. To your point, though, the Mario games aren't usually super challenging, and like I said in the video, if you're good at the game, you won't normally get hit by enemies anyway.
If anything, going down the crap path like a spiky tunnel and waste your time there, translates in real world like taking off the training wheels and allowing yourself to fall and stumble and take more time. Nintendo understands this, even Famitsu polls seem to suggest Japanese people prefer to retry, but consider THAT the "easy mode". But some people have a serious problem identifying how games are DESIGNED to be played, if you think an arbitrary yank back into the starting point is "difficult". You'd seriously be saying that mountain biking is the easy mode to riding your bicycle on the pavement. No, it's the fun you chose to have. There's abslutely no such thing as "easy" if you're an adult and actually capable of learning the ins adn outs of a game. It's just memorization that's easy, but Western audience wants to call themselves hardcore gamers and call that hard.
@@TheYoshiFanatic Hi - I'm a new subscriber, here, and a *_*DIE-HARD*_* Yoshi fan! The one thing that bothers me the most about the Yoshis (and even Nabbit) in being "Easy" mode characters is the fact that they can't use power-ups, which means there that they can't get to certain secret exits/goals without using one of those power-ups (and thus those characters can't even be played in certain secret stages/levels without first switching to a "Normal" mode character such as Mario or Toadette to reach those secret exits/goals to unlock the secret stages/levels that are in question there) or collect certain Wonder Flowers/Wonder Seeds/10-Wonder Coins without using a power-up - case in point: some of the stages/levels in World 3 and World 6 - in the _Super Mario Bros. Wonder_ video game!! Therefore, you can't 100% complete the _Super Mario Bros. Wonder_ video game exclusively as a Yoshi (and/or as Nabbit) - which really, *_really_* figuratively sucks there!!! This Reddit post - www.reddit.com/r/Mario/comments/17q9o7l/super_mario_bros_wonder_is_sadly_impossible_to/ - talks about this issue in more detail, if you're interested in reading it.
@StevenVillman Hey, thanks for checking out the video! I agree, it's very frustrating that you can't 100% complete the game as Yoshi exclusively. Hopefully this gets sorted out for future games.
That's awesome! I saw it when Demeech shared it on his channel. Great work! It made me wish Bubble Yoshi was in the game. Would you like me to provide a link in the description? I'd love to give you credit for your work :)
I see him being the character you use after you complete the game. When you just want to come and have a chill time fluttering through your favourite levels.
The underbite is actually present in the very next clip of Super Mario World, where his nose & mouth take up half of the original nose portion. Not to mention his overall design has returned to his more classic look & no the majorly rounded out one in previous games. He looks more like he does in Super Mario World than ever. His animations are all roughly similar, just modernized for Wonder.
I do appreciate the blending of the older artstyle with the new. It honestly is a good look for Yoshi! I just really don't like the underbite. To me, it always just looked like his lip puffed up, not that it wrapped around his nose.
I am unreasonably upset by the lower lip going over his nose. It looks silly and painful to poor Yoshi. He never looked like this before and it's kind of absurd.
Me too! Some people say it's supposed to look like the official artwork of Super Mario World, but while I see where they're coming from, at best I see it as being a misinterpretation of that artwork, and I certainly hope this new look doesn't stick.
@@TheYoshiFanatic Didn't the official artwork of Super Mario World always just have his cheeks get big? They nailed it in SMW and Yoshi's Island, why do this?
The Super Mario World artwork puffed up his cheeks and his bottom lip, whereas future iterations would just have his cheeks puff out. But even in the Super Mario World artwork, it never looked like his bottom lip wrapped around his nose.
@@TheYoshiFanatic Yeah... I just looked closely at the SMW art and it's more like Yoshi's whole mouth shape and proportions were just different. This whole mouth wrapping around his nose thing is one bit of art direction I just can't get behind, as silly and as fun as it was to see at first, it feels wrong.
I too am bummed that Yoshi was relegated as the “easy mode” character in Wonder, and can’t use powerups. (I just wanna see Fire Yoshi be canon.) But after playing and 100%ing the game…Yoshi was by far my favorite character to play. And that’s even when comparing him to the others and their ability to use items. While neat, the items this time around didn’t hook me as much as in past games, while Yoshi’s movest was plain fun to use. And outside of a few instances, you can pretty much clear any stage 100% using only Yoshi. I’m a veteran gamer. One who’s played games ever since the N64 days, and have had experience with extra difficult titles too. So normally, I’d hate the idea of using an easy mode character, as doing so would feel demeaning and embarrassing. But for Wonder? Screw it; it’s freaking Yoshi. And I love Yoshi. Plus, with life getting busier and busier as an adult, I don’t have the same amount of time to invest in games as I used to. So more casual experiences have become more appealing to me as of late. So while I do think there were a few issues that came to be with Yoshi being forced as the game’s easy mode character, all-in-all his inclusion period was a huge net positive for Wonder, and really improved my enjoyment with the game.
I resonate with a lot of that, especially being an adult with a busy life just looking for a casual gaming experience. I've got a wife and two kids, a full time job, and a lot of chores to keep me busy, so the only times I get to play games are for maybe an hour after the kids go to bed. I've been convinced to do a second playthrough as Yoshi only, with the self-imposed challenge of restarting the stage after getting hit twice. Not a huge fan of needing to do that, and I still wish that you could just turn easy mode off for Yoshi and even Nabbit. But if it means I get to play as Yoshi more, I'm down!
I 100%'d the game as red yoshi for my first playthrough. I think the only sucky thing is that you require different characters in like 5 levels in order to fully beat the game, but overall I enjoyed my experience even if it was a bit easy. For fun, I started a new profile where I still play as yoshi, but if I get hit, I have to find a way to lose a life. It surprisingly made a big difference and increased the fun because of the challenge. Unfortunately, there's a lot of levels where yoshi literally can't die, so you have to exit the level and go into a different one to lose a life. It's a bit tedious but it gives an additional unintended challenge where you must 100% the level in one shot if you're unable to die. If you're able to die, you can respawn at the checkpoint. Anyway, I find that to be a lot of fun despite it being tedious. I just wish they added like a "hard mode" where you're able to die even as yoshi.
That's a good way to do it! I don't have much hope that Nintendo will add a hard mode to this game, but anything's possible. And the modding scene is flourishing for this game; someone already made a mod where Yoshi dies after taking two hits. I haven't modded my Switch, but I'll be keeping an eye on the Mario Wonder modding scene just in case I ever do :)
@@Pissmaster420 In order to get 6 medals, you have to pick a character besides Yoshi on some levels because some wonder seeds/purple coins/alternate endings require powerups to obtain
Hot take: I literally couldn’t care less that he’s easy mode. I’m still gonna play as Yoshi. I main him, Daisy and Toadette in everything and this game’s gonna be no different.
I like your style! I wish it were easier for me to want to play as Yoshi, but that easy mode certainly does discourage me at least a little bit. I'll keep using Yoshi to go back and finish levels that I couldn't find everything in the first time. I think that's a pretty good compromise.
I care, and GOOD FOR HIM. I don"t want characters to just be mush, graphics options, poured into every game with time that could be used to improve the game. And oh look, Wonder is IMPROVED. People magically think that wasting on low value content is "easy" development, when it's the opposite, it takes time that doesn't materialize in equal amount of fun. Every frame of Yoshi even taking a hit would just be something out of the rest of the game. Mario Party 10 isn't great, and EVERY character is "the easy mode" in that they all suck, but I'm happy my favorite enemy Spike was in it. And I'm fine, if ENTIRE games with yoshi just ARE easier. But the moment players get MORE value because an character has their own PLAY STYLE, it's not good enough. Look, I speedrun games and they ALL get easy if you dedicate time for them, actually treat them as art. When you want it "difficult" that's just refusing to find your own angle in HOW you want to solve the game, you just want the design to eventually yield to you without becoming truly god at it. Then move on and SEE more graphics options like "playable" Yoshi being copypaste of every other character, and the next disposable game. I'm also so done with people hating Peachette when she's the OG Bowsette, people just hate anything JUST for being official. The appeal of Bowsette is erasure of the mind of Bowser still inside her. It's this weird fetish of forcing an official male character to BE female anda ripoff of Peach, so when Peachette is made official it doesn't do the trick, and people want "female Bowser" to be canonized. Some bizarre urge to mark your territory over actual Nintendo characters instead of knuckling down adn making your own indie game.
Interesting take. I can't say I agree with all of your points though. First, if anything, it took more time to make Yoshi an easy mode character, as no other character takes knockback from enemies (except for maybe Nabbit); they had to animate him differently and program the knockback properties differently from all the other characters. It would have been easier and take less time to just program that aspect the same as the rest of the characters. Also, it's worth mentioning that the development team was basically given all the time they wanted to work on this game. Development time and deadlines, while still a factor, were less of a driving force here. I don't think anybody is complaining that Yoshi has a flutter jump or gobble move. I'm certainly not complaining at least, and I did say in the video that it wouldn't really feel like a Yoshi experience if those aspects weren't in the game. I even advocate for ALL of the characters having unique aspects to make each character feel special, and not just a reskin of Mario (as in Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario 64 DS, Super Mario 3D World, and even Super Mario Run). The problem most people have with Yoshi being easy mode is the fact that he doesn't take damage, which does cheapen the challenge somewhat, especially in boss fights (bear in mind I'm only 3 hours into the game, so my mind absolutely could change on this aspect in particular). I get your point about "getting good" at the game, and being able to impose challenges on yourself to make the game more fun to play is a good way to play games, Mario related especially. I casually speedrun a couple games myself, and there is something to be said about knowing the ins and outs of the game to the point where it does become "easy" through repetition alone. But I feel like most people want the game to present a challenge that they feel satisfied in overcoming (Celeste and Metroid Dread especially come to mind). Not everyone wants to "make their own challenge", and not everyone finds that fun.
Thanks! I'd like to post more often as well. Once my Yoshi's New Island retrospective is finished, I've got some ideas for shorts and some smaller videos that will probably help.
What an oddly specific channel, haha. I like the video though. As an aside, I think that you may be able to satisfy your needs by using mods, even if one may have an easier time with yoshi because of his moves, I think that making him be able to die is gonna make him a lot more appealing. For me, I don't own a switch, but I got really dssapointed when I heard that yoshi and co. couldn't take damage :(. There already is one mod that gives him hitpoints, but it's a bit jank, so hopefully better ones will come out soon, which could maybe add a small and big version of him, or maybe even somehow add powerups down the line
Glad you enjoyed the video! And I like the niche I'm in. Not a lot of people make Yoshi videos, haha. I've looked into the modding scene a little bit, and I did see a mod giving Yoshi two hit points, and even one mod that makes him straight-up hard mode with only one hit point! I don't have a modded Switch, and I don't want to pirate the game, but if I ever do get the wherewithal to mod my Switch, that's going to be the first thing I try :)
I think people are too hard on Yoshi for not taking damage from enemies. I think Nintendo made a good compromise that he gets knocked back if hit, which doesn't happen with the other characters. If you get hit as Yoshi and are standing near a pit or lava, you're probably dead unless you can recover quickly. That doesn't happen with the other characters, you just lose your powerup. The fire and bubble flowers are far more powerful and useful than Yoshi's immunity to enemy hits.
I think that's a fair point. I still would have preferred that he take damage instead, but it's not a complete deal breaker like I thought it would be.
@@TheYoshiFanatic I've been switching between Yoshi and best girl Toadette and I really don't notice much of a difference. But when I'm playing Yoshi I'm not trying to get hit on purpose just to go "LOL BABY MODE" I play him as if I could get hurt. Oddly enough if Yoshi could get hurt I think he'd be the challenge mode character.
@@ceruleeI don't really think Yoshi without his invincibility would be challenging because he still has his abilities from Super Mario World & New Super Mario Bros Wii
@@rainlion10 Him not being able to use power ups makes certain levels much more of a challenge if not impossible to complete. I've had to switch to characters that can use power ups to find certain coins or secret exits.
What I do respect about Yoshi’s mechanics is that it can act like a double-edged sword; you can’t can’t 100% the whole game as him as some stuff require power ups to access, and some stages such as “Climb To The Beat” the flutter can become a hindrance since it messes with your momentum.
For someone who has already 100% completed this game, I still have interest in doing another play-through as Yoshi. I was really excited to see him as a playable character until the Mario Wonder direct. The best compromise in all honesty is including an actual easy mode in a possible future update, though I’m not counting on it. The time I did have with Yoshi was still a good time, especially online where I could share power ups with other players since Yoshi can’t use them.
I think I'd actually prefer to see Nintendo add a hard mode, like a one-hit mode for all characters including Yoshi and Nabbit. But like you said, I wouldn't count on it.
Can’t forget Mario kart 8 gave Yoshi a ton of new voice clips- used in later games like super Mario party and such- heck even before Galaxy 2 there were new voice clips sprinkled in Strikers and Mario kart double dash/Wii- party 8- etc.
Very good point that kids should be able to play Mario in easy mode if they wanted to. He’s the star of the show after all. I just think they should’ve put Green Yoshi in normal mode and red and blue in easy
14:55 ok so here's the thing about that; the badges. As a novice game dev the idea of implementing those badges and keeping the game to nintendo's standards feels like a nightmare. Now imagine having to account for one character that cant wall jump and such, PLUS all the badges. So it cant be trade-offs rather just a different moveset that's similar. However I agree with your next point, easy mode shouldnt be tied to a character but rather just an option.
I'm interested to hear this from a Yoshi fanatic's perspective. Honestly, playing as Yoshi feels pretty good, I just restricted myself from doing it until I completed the game because I didn't like the idea of playing as a character that doesn't take damage. I wish he could get powerups, too...and that they didn't change his mouth like that, I greatly prefer the older design on that part.
I pretty much agree on all of those points! The only thing I'm doing different is I'll play through a bunch of levels with the regular characters, then go back through them with Yoshi to get any collectibles I missed, unless I feel that doing so with an easy mode character will hurt the completion experience.
One thing about Yoshi I did notice is that he takes knock back from enemies. It’s a small detail on paper, but none of the other characters do. This makes it so that levels with more pits/lava/whatever can become a bit scarier knowing that if you aren’t careful you could instantly die. Also, I played the game alone and with people as both Yoshi and Luigi and found myself having a ton of fun in all 4 different ways to play. Yoshi in multiplayer is funny as hell. Highly recommend. Honestly, Yoshi just is not fun to play as in the special world levels where getting hit by enemies is the main gimmick, but levels like the final badge challenge or the jumping challenge aren’t really ruined at all.
Good stuff! I did notice the knockback (though I didn't mention it in the video). It's a good touch, and an interesting callback to the Yoshi games, where Yoshi always takes knockback.
I don't know. I do not understand the "Yoshi is easy mode character" retoric. If Yoshi doesn't have the gobble, flutter jump, and takes damage - then it is not playable Yoshi - that is re-skinned mario. Do people want to play as Mario that happens to look like a Yoshi, or do they want to play as Yoshi? Playing as Yoshi involves having the same abilities Yoshi does. Which is Gobble, Flutter jump, and not taking damage
Agreed as far as the gobble and flutter jump go. Those are absolute staples in Yoshi's moveset that should absolutely be there for a playable Yoshi. The problem everyone has with Yoshi is that he doesn't take damage, and that isn't a quintessential Yoshi trait. Sure, he doesn't take damage in the Yoshi's Island games, but that's only half of the Yoshi games. In Yoshi's Story, Topsy-Turvy, Woolly World and Crafted World, Yoshi does have a health meter. And even in the Yoshi's Island series, there was a health meter of sorts, just not for Yoshi. You still had to be mindful of enemies and damaging hazards. Yoshi doesn't necessarily take damage in most Super Mario games, but in the vast majority of them, he's more of a power-up than he is a playable character. In the only other Super Mario games that Yoshi is playable (Super Mario 64 DS and Super Mario Run), he takes damage just like everyone else. Meanwhile, in this game, Yoshi can stand in the corner of the room for the Bowser Junior boss fights, and eventually, he'll be knocked back against the wall and land on top of Bowser Junior enough times that he'll win without moving at all. And while the knockback from enemies is a factor, for the most part, it's just not the same as if Yoshi could take damage, and the game is still substantially easier when you play as Yoshi.
I think Yoshi as a character is fine as he is, with the flutter jump and tongue, I think having those powers and not being able to use power ups is already a great trade off. However, the immortality is what makes him unfun to play as, in my opinion, Yoshi could shrink when taking damage like a normal character, and any power up should act as a regular mushroom for him, just increase his size. Maybe even make so when he's small he can't eat enemies, I don't know. We've seen baby sized Yoshis in the original Super Mario world, so I don't think seeing a small Yoshi would be a bad idea.
If you remove say, wall kick, you're locked out of beating special world 2 for example. It'd be like if some levels couldn't be beaten without flutter jump, or if some levels would require you to play as Luigi for a higher jump, or as Peach for a float. Of course that could be an awesome game, where different characters have different branching routes through a level, but that's a gimmick and game all on its own. While having a take damage toggle would've been neat, overall I think the way they went about it was the right call.
Good point... Granted, most of the levels don't require wall jumps, but there are some that do. I guess it would only make sense to substitute the flutter jump for the spin jump.
I've made it a rule to myself to lose a life/restart a level every time I take three hits as either Yoshi or Nabbit Tbh easy mode is not the biggest deal breaker for me, combining that with playing as my favourite Mario characters and I'm there to the party But I would be lying if I said playing Yoshi and Nabbit normally didn't feel a little bit cheap, good thing I have Toadette as a secondary who funny enough also used to be an Easy Mode character
I think that's a good way to do it. There's definitely value in self-imposing a challenge to get more value out of the game. I just wish we didn't have to do that to make playing as Yoshi feel less like cheating. Also, I forgot that Toadette was easy mode in New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. Maybe there's hope for Yoshi not being easy mode in the next game. Haha
Whether or not Yoshi's in the next Mario game as a playable character or his usual 2D Mario self is the scary part We just have to cross our fingers and hope that the devs got the message for next time
I completely agree. The characters really don't stand out at all from each other aside from Yoshi, since they're all essentially just reskins of Mario. It's a shame, really.
I honestly really really LOVE yoshi here, it is a shame they made him easier than other characters, but I don't really mind because I'm just soooo happy that they seemed to have reached a really great compromise between his new and old design, being more dinosuar shaped with the longer body and neck, a slightly less portruding nose and the iconic chill eyes, but still has more upright movements like with the newer ones. I would be so happy if they stuck with this design for future games isntead of going back to the fully upright, short, wierd humanoid yoshi, that one never sat right with me even if I do love yoshi
*@omeletttte* I'm not going to lie, here - I actually like Yoshi's character designs more in video games like _Mario Party Superstars_ and _Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour_ than in classic Mario video games like _Super Mario World_ and _Super Mario 64._ However, I think here that the character design for the Yoshis - while not my favourite - in _Super Mario Bros. Wonder_ is a good compromise.
I'm visually impaired and play easy mode in order to get used to the levels and improve my reaction time before I do a normal playthrough. I'd love an easy mode toggle so I can experience the same things others can. I'd still turn easy mode off after beating the game ofc, but I just don't wanna be restricted to Yoshi and Nabbit all the time.
That's a great use case for easy mode that I didn't even think of. Yet another great reason easy mode should have been a toggle instead of character specific. Thanks for the insight!
Was really disappointed when I saw Yoshi was an "easy" character. I could honestly care less about the easy thing. It's a Mario game. I'm not playing it for Difficulty. What really irked me was that he doesn't get the power ups. I want to play as Yoshi but see all the new power ups wonder has to offer
I do feel like we missed out on that one. Powered-up Yoshi designs would have been so cool! They could have even balanced it by not letting Yoshi use his tongue when he has a power up, similar to Rosalina in Super Mario 3D World (she couldn't use her spin move if she had a fire flower, for example).
@@TheYoshiFanatic yes especially that we got four different variants of Yoshi. I felt they could have made two "easy mode" and left the other two as regular characters
Love playing as Yoshi. Laid back and Fun times..thats Yoshi in a shell nut. Good things. Yoshi for the first time in Canon can enteract with Dry bones and has a unique effect from eating them. Think abiut that....never before this Has Yoshi been able to encounter fortress enemies
I did enjoy new interactions like that. I just wish he didn't have to be easy mode. Puts a damper on the novelty of playing as Yoshi for me, unfortunately.
I was worried initially. Though I had a tonne of fun completing the game with Yoshi. Even though he doesn't take damage from certain enemies it doesn't make the game too much easier at all to be honest. This is especially apparent with the more difficult levels. If anything he allows for you have a little more patience when handling some challenging levels. I enjoyed playing with him and even the easy tag will not deter me from doing so in the future.
Great to hear! I'm very tempted to do a Yoshi-only playthrough after I've completed the game once with the normal characters. Even on my first playthrough, I'm going back and playing levels again as Yoshi just for the experience.
It's tough, i started my initial playthrough as yoshi before i realized that i simply wasnt getting hit. When i finally did, it all sank in that "easy mode" wasnt just a moniker...even more so than powerups just never activating. I deleted this file early on to start over. I typically play yoshi on EVERYTHING. Now that my girlfriend is playing our new save too, i may pick up Yoshi again, but this just makes me want a proper Yoshi game adjusted towards his full moveset.
I'm with you on that one for sure. If you typically play as Yoshi on everything, though, I still think you can play as him in this game without sacrificing all of the fun. Yeah, it's easier, but it's still a great time. I know I'll keep playing as Yoshi after I've beaten a level with another character. That seems to work pretty well for me.
Idea: Rather than altering the existing base game, add a "Challange mode", where the characters have their unique traits, Yoshis and Nabbit both gain the ability to use items, and lose their invincibility. Challenge mode now also uses the NES Super Mario Brothers 1 style of taking damage, where any hit reverts you to Small Mario regardless of what powerup you had. Maybe also put more enemies/remix levels a bit, it could be similar to Ocarina of Time's Master Mode. Note: If a character uses a badge in which they already have the unique trait of, the badge will increase it's effect by 50%
Personally, I’m okay with the design choices the developers made. All of Yoshi’s attributes are in spirit of his character and it’s nice accessibility feature for younger or inexperienced players and parents who want to play with their kids. As far as visuals go, his new model actually reflects his classic artwork and is much more dinosaur-like and I couldn’t be happier to be honest. He’s an absolute pleasure to play with.
It's really just the no-damage the bothers me. Super Mario 64 DS and Super Mario Run both allowed Yoshi to take damage, and they still stayed true to what makes Yoshi so much fun. I like the visual style too. It's neat that they kinda mixed his old and new style, even making him look more dinosaur-like, holding his arms tight to his side like a raptor would. The only thing I don't like is the "frog face", which I acquiesce is likely a callback to some of the official artwork for Super Mario World. I just like the puffy-cheek design from most of the other games better than the "frog face".
Yoshi as a character could interact with power ups. In SMW he could get wings and fly becoming a blue Yoshi. Blue Yoshi all gain wings when holding a shell in their mouth. In Yoshi's island Yoshi could use power ups. If I recall correctly most of his games have power up interaction. So not all of his attributes.
Honestly I hate to say it but I think Wonder might have been rushed in some areas and that may be why all the characters except Yoshi and Nabbit play identically. I think the game was like 95% to completion but they never really added bosses and to save development time and resources, just made very character except Yoshi play identically and nixed powerups for Yoshi. It may also have to do with level design being far easier on the development side with everyone playing identically (aside from Yoshi just having a few innate boosts) rather than dealing with something like Luigi can jump higher, blue toad is faster but jumps low, Peach can float and having to deal with the badge system. It feels like they had just enough time to produce a great game by christmas when they could have produced the best game by March or April.
Just like Super Mario 3D World when the character loses you could use a shiny cat Cape to go through all the boards I remember that since the Nintendo Wii U era and I should definitely use Yoshi if I'm having difficulties on certain levels like the time blocks music jump jump jump jump level and the lava cave board thanks for the advice definitely use Yoshi's for all those hard levels if I can't challenge certain characters to go through it.
Yoshi is basically just good for collectibles but I plan on beating the game normally so when I play with friends I can just use Yoshi to help. I do hope that Nintendo adds a damage toggle for Yoshi and maybe dlc for unique movement for everyone.
If this were any other game then I wouldn't like it but mario wonder is super easy and I don't see a huge difference when playing as a normal character.
ngl i like the yoshi’s for one main reason it’s help for my little cousin cuz he’s 5 and don’t really know how to play the game and i can use the yoshi to help him learn the game also a good death cheater on bosses and hard levels
I keep hearing the thing abt Yoshi not getting new lines for decades after Yoshis Story but he has new lines in Sunshine and then Mario Kart Wii??? Are those just unused already recorded lines from Story then or are people somehow forgetting those kinda major games exist?
I do believe the voice clips in Sunshine and MK Wii were unused clips that Totaka recorded for Yoshi's Story, and the next batch of recordings was for Mario Galaxy 2.
@@TheYoshiFanatic why use character-specific abilities when you have the badges that use those same abilities? If you want to play as Luigi with his classic jump, can't you just use the Floating High Jump Badge?
I think a lot of the character design decisions you don’t like here make a lot more sense when you consider the multiplayer options. The main characters all play the same so that you can easily tell your character apart on a busy screen (in local or online) without the gameplay changing. The alternative would be palette swaps, which could get confusing with abilities like the fire flower and bubble. In this context, Yoshi works much like he does in Super Mario world: players can mount on Yoshi and take advantage of his moveset, but Yoshi doesn’t immediately die when he gets hit, so you can find him and hop back on.
Y'know, I don't usually consider the multiplayer aspect of games, but you make a very compelling point. I still think unique character traits and non-easy mode Yoshi could still work in multiplayer, but it wouldn't be as intuitive. Thanks for the insight!
New subscriber here. And I agree with you in some cases. Yoshi is also my favorite character and it did kinda sadden me a little bit that he’s stuck on easy mode with Nabbit. And the face he makes when eating stuff doesn’t bother me too much because it’s funny to me and I won’t let that stop me for not playing as him lol. And l yes I think that easy mode should be an option not a restriction because yeah we Got Toadette as a character again but she’s no long in easy mode because they made everyone almost the exact same despite their abilities and flaws. But if they were to even out the characters they wouldn’t have to worry about placing anyone in easy mode and make that be an option you can toggle while still play with other characters besides Yoshi. Bring back the crown for toadette, make better glides for Peach and Daisy give Luigi higher jumps and make Mario have a little bit more I-frames and give Yoshi his egg throwing mechanic and let Nabbit be Nabbit. But also make sure that the gameplay is balance like what you said for Yoshi with the flutter kicks but can’t do wall kicks because they both get the job done anyway, Luigi making him a bit tougher to control but jumps higher, make Daisy more powerful with the power ups she uses but her glide shorter, and so on. Otherwise If I get my own copy I wouldn’t mind beating the game with Yoshi because I also got Yellow Toad in the mix so it’s honestly a win win for my personal benefit. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. And I’m happy to be part of you channel by subscribing ti it! 💚
During some of the special world levels, I played as Nabbit. I intend to properly play them with normal characters but it was fun to help out other players by placing standees for them if they got stuck. Tho some of them still kept me on my toes lol
I've only played two of the special worlds so far, the ones for World 1 and World 2. For the music block one, I did find that Yoshi made it a little easier, but not to an absurd extent.
Why did they do Yoshi's mouth so dirty like that??? Why does it look more like a weird frog power up instead of looking like he ate an enemy? WHO in Nintendo thought that was a good idea?! Is it because it's 3D instead of 2D, so they can't expand his cheeks out?
I'm not really sure why they did that. They've given Yoshi the puffed up cheeks in many games with 3D models (Yoshi's Woolly World and Crafted World, New Super Mario Bros games and Mario Maker, etc). I saw someone say that it's a callback to some Japanese official artwork for Super Mario World, but I think that's a stretch.
@@TheYoshiFanatic I'm sorry but compared to what they've done with the other characters, I don't think its a stretch in the slightest that they've reference old Yoshi artwork and his SMW sprite for when holding something in his mouth. At most it could be a potential misinterpretation of it, but its clear that artwork has been the main inspiration for nearly everything artstyle wise. As for what I'd like about Yoshi moveset wise, is if he was able to eat enemies above him and throw eggs like in Yoshi's Island. I feel him using power-ups would just defeat the purpose of Yoshi being Yoshi, *however* it'd be great if he'd take damage like in Super Mario Run, and be limited to only using Super Mushrooms as a trade-off for his built-in abilities.
Hello this was a super good video with really high quality. I have been having a blast with Mario wonder but I agree that there should be an easy mode toggle for the characters yoshi and nab it.
I don't really have an issue with them being available from the beginning. What would have been cool, though, is if hard mode was unlocked after you beat the game, where even the easy mode characters die in one hit.
I think tying difficulty not to an abstract option in the menu, but as individual characters that fit with their style, is a very Nintendo thing to do, and is much better for Wonder. Making the toggle different for every player in local co-op, or forcing every player to use the same difficulty would suck. As a Yoshi fan, I'm not playing as Yoshi unless I'm playing with my daughter (so she can ride my back), and I think that's totally fine, and was the right decision by Nintendo. Now, if I was allowed to make a change, I'd make it so there's 4 invincible characters (4 colors of Nabbit, 4 other characters, make the Toads invincible, whatever), and then let Yoshi die but keep his other abilities. Nabbit feels like a weird inclusion as a "not as easy" character but being the only one available, and Yoshi's moves are already insanely powerful. It would have given 3 unique playstyles instead of 2 1/2, and an entire family can play however they want. That, or like you suggest, just making everyone play differently.
I would like to ask, why would it suck? It would be an option when selecting a character that would take half a second or a button press while selecting a character that only effects the user. It would be a net positive for almost everyone. This would be incredibly easy in local co-op as you do have to select a character.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 It's about framing the mechanic, and about game feel. Young children who might benefit from an easy mode might deliberately avoid it out of principle and ruin their enjoyment of a game that's not meant to be that difficult anyway. Extremely young children that's only 4 or 5 might have a harder time understanding what it's there for rather than simply saying ___ can't get hurt. It gives the impression that this is "an easier, but mostly different, way to play" instead of a "you can turn this on if you suck". Many badges make the game easier too, but they're not just labeled as an easy or accessibility option, because they're there to just be interesting gameplay more than anything. It also creates better cohesiveness and understanding. When playing online, you immediately understand what a player can do just by looking at them. When dealing with the chaos of 4 local multiplayer, "yellow Yoshi and Nabbit are fine here" is quicker than "okay, Jameson is Mario and Timmy is Peach, both of them turned on invincibility and flutter jump". As a side note, I think the easier character being a gender neutral cool yet cute dinosaur is way better than putting it on the girly toad that turns into a princess. Young boys aren't necessarily going to be turned off by it, and everybody can enjoy it. I always prefer difficulty modifiers that are baked naturally into the game versus being barred behind a menu option that people would only ever open as a response to feeling defeated, that's not fun. Adding that complexity into the people you play as simplified things and makes everything just flow together better. No decision in any game benefits everyone, that's physically impossible considering everyone has different tastes. But this decision fits into the mold of the rest of the game's design nicely, and even a Yoshi obsessed fan who wants to experience difficulty in Wonder is only mildly upset. Sucks for the fanatic, I can empathize with that, but I'd still call the decision by Nintendo to be a win.
Actually the reason yoshi puts his lips in his nose when he has something in his mouth is because of some old official art of mario world so technically yoshi is now even more canon
I have seen people refer to a piece of Super Mario World artwork where Yoshi's lip and cheeks are puffed up. But his lip didn't wrap around his nose like it does in this game, so I do think the underbite in Mario Wonder is at least a misinterpretation of the classic artwork.
I think they made everyone the same mostly because the badges are the strengths and weaknesses like using the cap parachute but losing the spin in the air
That's a good point, but I think there's room for both badges and unique character attributes. Not like it's a deal-breaker that most characters are reskins of Mario, but it is a bit less interesting I think.
Okay how about this idea….. you have your pro controller set for yoshi and a joy con set for Mario. And you just go thru the entire game like that to have that old school feel of super Mario world??? Any thoughts I’d love to here please @ me so I can read them. I just figured it out now and trying it and I’m loving the old feel
Yeah, it would've been cool to see what Yoshi would look like with the different powet-ups, especially the elephant apple. Like I showed in the video, someone made fan art that shows elephant Yoshi, and it's not as weird as I thought. Haha
I'm pretty sure he got at least some new voice lines for his appearances in Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Odyssey... For this game, I think he actually got a new voice actor...
I have seen people say that. There's one piece of Super Mario World official artwork in particular that shows his cheeks and his lip all puffed up signifying that he was holding something in his mouth. I do think it's a misinterpretation of the artwork though, as his lip never wrapped around his nose.
I was going to say Mario Odyssey, but there haven't been any new mainline Mario games since then (unless you count Bowser's Fury), so I didn't want to say it. It would have sounded like "This is the most exciting new Mario game since the last one!" Haha.
Yeah, you can certainly do that. Self-imposed challenge is a good way to get more fun out of a game that's too easy. Kinda just stinks that we have to resort to that, you know?
The problem with giving every character their unique strengths and weaknesses is that people would just play the best character and avoid the worst one. In 3D world everyone I know played Toad and hated playing as Peach... I personally think they did a good job getting rid of those special characteristics and basically turning them into badges, that way you can still have a Luigi with a higher Jump or a peach with a parachute-like ability. Lets also not ignore that the goal of the developers is to avoid arguments between kids during local multiplayer in their own households, that's literally the reason why now there are two princesses.
Interesting. I'm only three hours into the game, so I don't know about all the badges. That's really cool! But regarding the strengths and weaknesses, I find Nintendo does a decent job of balancing the characters so that there's not really a "best" or "worst" character; it's usually subjective based on what your preferences are. Like to run fast? Then Toad's your guy. Having a tough time with jumps? Maybe try Peach or Luigi. I usually go with Mario since he's decent at everything.
i’ve played peach since it’s been an option 🫣 they took out her floating ability but they added badges that give the same effect so she was definitely a useful character to play. but she is slow 😩
Toad isn't the best character though, Peach is due to her hover and most threats being death pits or on the ground. Or to be more precise in the group of people I interact with Peach is agreed to be the best while in the group you interact with Toad is agreed to be the best. Meaning there is no best character rather it is a best character for your preferences to either augment your strengths or cover your weaknesses or just change things up.
The thing is if you have played any of the other games, the only maybe half of the special world will give you a hard time if that, so I feel like yoshi and nabbit feel more like a glorified interactive cutscene at times
That's the sigma gamer play right there. Haha. But I agree, and as I said in the video, if you're good at the game, you won't get hit by enemies that much anyway, so Yoshi being easy mode isn't a complete deal breaker.
7:44- heey, that’s my artwork!!! Cool to see it pop up
That's awesome!
I agree with that sentiment.
I FOUND MY PEOPLE
GLAD YOU FOUND US! Happy to have you :)
(I just wanna see Fire Yoshi be canon.)
But after playing and 100%ing the game…Yoshi was by far my favorite character to play.
It would’ve been interesting if different secrets could be found with different characters and Yoshi was just one toolset of many.
If they release updates or DLC for Wonder, some Yoshi-specific challenge levels might go some of the way to validate the new easy mode characters.
Good idea!
I would've just restarted the level, but then I'm not really into the 'lives' mechanic anyway.
What’s this fully beat the game 5 level thing about. I did it all as one character
@@Pissmaster420probably search parties.
I disagree. Yoshi can't use any of the power ups, and there are 3 variations of him PLUS Nabbit. I don't believe we needed 4 invincible characters.
Wow, you main the same three characters as me. Which color Yoshi is your favorite? I like using Light Blue and Red.
Underrated channel, I hope you can post more often
Very true!
I think an obvious use for the fire flower would be letting Yoshi spit fire once like he did in Super Mario World after eating a specific shell.
Good idea. And that would be a great callback to Super Mario World as well!
Just uh the thumbnail lmfao. I’m glad I’m not the only one that thought that was a weird look for Yoshi
But it’s very interesting that in co-op u can ride yoshi if someone is playing as yoshi which makes an interesting way to play the game.
I do like that aspect of Yoshi in this game. I was able to help my son beat the game by letting him ride on Yoshi's back to get through tough parts.
You can't even beat the game 100% as Yoshi, lmao. Too many purple 10 coins require elephant powerup.
I'm only about three worlds in right now, but I have definitely noticed some instances where Yoshi can't be used for 100% completion.
Can’t forget Mario kart 8 gave Yoshi a ton of new voice clips- used in later games like super Mario party and such- heck even before Galaxy 2 there were new voice clips sprinkled in Strikers and Mario kart double dash/Wii- party 8- etc.
Great video as always Jeff 😀If you pin me you’ll get 5 years old yoshi luck 🍀 🦎
How much Yoshi luck do I get for giving your comment a heart?
Very good point that kids should be able to play Mario in easy mode if they wanted to. He’s the star of the show after all. I just think they should’ve put Green Yoshi in normal mode and red and blue in easy
Yeah, not all kids are going to want to play as Yoshi or Nabbit.
I'm ok with Yoshi not having his abilities. I actually hope that happens in a Mario game one day, but that's obviously just me.
Good ideas! And we did see small Yoshi in Super Mario Run, so that's certainly not out of the question.
2:47 BRO!!! YES!!! The underbite! It is SOOOO ugly. I’m just so glad I’m not the only one. 😭
You're definitely not the only one. "Look how they massacred my boy!"
Yoshi can ride yoshi
Indeed! Though this isn't the first time. That honor goes to Yoshi's Crafted World.
I guess it would only make sense to substitute the flutter jump for the spin jump.
loved the video, jufru! the clips you added make me want to try the game.. but what is up with yoshi frog lip face??🤣
Awesome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, it's not a great look for our good boi, is it? Haha
yeah they should have balanced the characters and have easy mode an option for all of them
I've made it a rule to myself to lose a life/restart a level every time I take three hits as either Yoshi or Nabbit
Tbh easy mode is not the biggest deal breaker for me, combining that with playing as my favourite Mario characters and I'm there to the party
But I would be lying if I said playing Yoshi and Nabbit normally didn't feel a little bit cheap, good thing I have Toadette as a secondary who funny enough also used to be an Easy Mode character
Haha
Whether or not Yoshi's in the next Mario game as a playable character or his usual 2D Mario self is the scary part
We just have to cross our fingers and hope that the devs got the message for next time
Yoshi being able to eat pauranna plants feel very uncanny.
I guess so, considering he couldn't eat them in the Yoshi games. But he could always eat them in the Mario games, so I'd say it fits.
I mean of you can't eat Piranha Plants you can't spit seeds like in Yoshi's Island
Wish yoshi could take damage and instead of using powerups the yoshis could use thier eggs.
I'd be okay with that!
Tbh I’m pissed they got rid of peach float and the Luigi jump. I wish each character was unique and able to use power ups.
I completely agree. The characters really don't stand out at all from each other aside from Yoshi, since they're all essentially just reskins of Mario. It's a shame, really.
Yoshi shouldve been a one hit death character
Someone made a mod where Yoshi is a one-hit death mode, which is pretty awesome.
6:23 You know that someone’s old when they say that new super Mario Bros Wii and U are recent games.
Yeah, I guess I did date myself with that one, huh? Haha
Great observation! I have to hand it to Nintendo, they did a great job with his design in this game.
*@omeletttte*
I'm not going to lie, here - I actually like Yoshi's character designs more in video games like _Mario Party Superstars_ and _Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour_ than in classic Mario video games like _Super Mario World_ and _Super Mario 64._ However, I think here that the character design for the Yoshis - while not my favourite - in _Super Mario Bros. Wonder_ is a good compromise.
You can't remember the last exciting Mario game? My man, Odyssey exists.
Yeah, for some reason I wasn't thinking about that one. Loved Odyssey though!
Nice vid all the points i can agree with👍like why cant you pick the difficultly dumb
Thanks! And I agree, if they could give us a toggle for easy mode in Mario Run, why not Mario Wonder?
@@TheYoshiFanatic I understand your feelings.
Personally I have no issue...Games are meant to have fun, and everyone has different perceptions of Fun.
@@zeusthefox1585 For sure! Yoshi's still a ton of fun to play as in Mario Bros Wonder.
I hate that they tied Yoshi to simple mode! It’s total BS that they did that! Not fair
While it's not as much of a deal breaker as I originally thought, it's definitely still frustrating.
I play it with my friend and all i use is yoshi because i find him funny
Funny and cute! It's hard to resist the little guy. Haha
Yoshi _is_ a dinofrogtle...
I wish each yoshi colour had his own unique power when eating shells like in SNES mario world 😂
Idea: Rather than altering the existing base game, add a "Challange mode", where the characters have their unique traits, Yoshis and Nabbit both gain the ability to use items, and lose their invincibility. Challenge mode now also uses the NES Super Mario Brothers 1 style of taking damage, where any hit reverts you to Small Mario regardless of what powerup you had. Maybe also put more enemies/remix levels a bit, it could be similar to Ocarina of Time's Master Mode. Note: If a character uses a badge in which they already have the unique trait of, the badge will increase it's effect by 50%
Ooh, I like that idea!
fellow yoshi enjoyer… i appreciate u
Thank you! I appreciate you too!
I really listened to over 18 minutes of content for three minutes. Easy award for most repetitions. Bonus award for complaints without complaining.
Yes Yoshi's Stuff Face Animation really puts a lot of question in my mind
It is a bit weird looking, huh?
If this were any other game then I wouldn't like it but mario wonder is super easy and I don't see a huge difference when playing as a normal character.
I think to ahí is a fun addition to play with a friend even if your both good he can be used to help the other players out even
ngl i like the yoshi’s for one main reason it’s help for my little cousin cuz he’s 5 and don’t really know how to play the game and i can use the yoshi to help him learn the game also a good death cheater on bosses and hard levels
My mum loves playing as yoshi on wonder and she loves the easy mode (but it should have been a toggle)
Do a super Mario world playthru where you only can complete a level while carrying a character
Is it just me, or is this game painfully easy? Boardering on boring and repetitive
I love the underbite, it’s so full of personality. Who gives af is he looks goofier?
I keep hearing the thing abt Yoshi not getting new lines for decades after Yoshis Story but he has new lines in Sunshine and then Mario Kart Wii??? Are those just unused already recorded lines from Story then or are people somehow forgetting those kinda major games exist?
I do believe the voice clips in Sunshine and MK Wii were unused clips that Totaka recorded for Yoshi's Story, and the next batch of recordings was for Mario Galaxy 2.
Nice vid as always Jeff! Great especially for being unscripted.
Thanks man! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
honestly I wish all of the characters had different stats/abilities like in super mario bros 2
Agreed! That would have made picking a character more interesting, and Yoshi wouldn't need to be easy mode.
They don't because of badges
@@redram6080 Interesting point, but I don't see why we can't have both.
Those are all great thoughts, thanks for sharing! Happy to have you here :)
For the music block one, I did find that Yoshi made it a little easier, but not to an absurd extent.
they shouldve made easy mode a seperate thing imo
Agreed! They did in Mario Run, so no reason not to do it here.
Nice Yoshi impression
Thanks! I'm gonna have a hard time doing an impression of the new Yoshi voice clips though. Haha
Hello this was a super good video with really high quality. I have been having a blast with Mario wonder but I agree that there should be an easy mode toggle for the characters yoshi and nab it.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video, and that you're enjoying Mario Wonder :)
They should have been unlockable after the story, but every character is available from the beginning...
It's funny, I did the same thing with replaying levels as Yoshi for 100% haha
I feel like it's a pretty good compromise. It lets you experience the challenges of the game first, then have fun as Yoshi later :)
@LizardNintendoODIN That's an interesting idea! I'll have to try that sometime. Thanks for the tip!
@@TheYoshiFanatic did you try it brother !?
I just hate not being able to use power ups. I wanted to see what Elephant Yoshi looked like
Yeah, it would've been cool to see what Yoshi would look like with the different powet-ups, especially the elephant apple. Like I showed in the video, someone made fan art that shows elephant Yoshi, and it's not as weird as I thought. Haha
Yeah but blue toad tho
That's fair.
Yoshi definitely got new voice lines.
I thought so! Not sure if I like them less or more than the old ones, but they're still very cute, so I can't complain. Haha
I'm pretty sure he got at least some new voice lines for his appearances in Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Odyssey... For this game, I think he actually got a new voice actor...
isnt the underbite a reference to the older games where he ate stuff like that?
I have seen people say that. There's one piece of Super Mario World official artwork in particular that shows his cheeks and his lip all puffed up signifying that he was holding something in his mouth. I do think it's a misinterpretation of the artwork though, as his lip never wrapped around his nose.
The last exciting mario game was odyssey, but this one is as good too
I was going to say Mario Odyssey, but there haven't been any new mainline Mario games since then (unless you count Bowser's Fury), so I didn't want to say it. It would have sounded like "This is the most exciting new Mario game since the last one!" Haha.
What if every time you take damage as yoshi just restart the level
Yeah, you can certainly do that. Self-imposed challenge is a good way to get more fun out of a game that's too easy. Kinda just stinks that we have to resort to that, you know?
I think the reason they made him easy bc elephant yoshi….
Yeah, he might look a little cursed, to be fair. Haha
does the grapple badge still use a vine or is it his tongue?
Yoshi still uses the vine with the grapple badge, not his tongue. Seems like a bit of a missed opportunity, eh?
I’m your 1000th sub :)
Thank you so much!!!
The thing is if you have played any of the other games, the only maybe half of the special world will give you a hard time if that, so I feel like yoshi and nabbit feel more like a glorified interactive cutscene at times
it's fun sometimes to play as Yoshi on levels just to help other players and give them items
The Legend is back 🔥
Yep! I'm back!... with an unscripted video, haha. The next one should be a little smoother :)
🗿👍
I prefer a ACTUAL EASY MODE ie one that doesn't require nearly USELESS party members like Yoshi in this one.
Oh boy…. Dude, you are thinking way too hard about that underbite. Not a big deal, and in my opinion isn’t bad at all.
You don't know, Cuz you weren't alive when the last exciting mario game game out
If never get hit, there is no difference between normal and easy mode
That's the sigma gamer play right there. Haha. But I agree, and as I said in the video, if you're good at the game, you won't get hit by enemies that much anyway, so Yoshi being easy mode isn't a complete deal breaker.
