    I never thought Yoshi being an easy mode was a bad thing. I don't think Mario Wonder is a difficult enough game to where playing as Yoshi feels like you're cheating things, especially when the badges exist and already break a lot of challenges. Plus if you really wanna challenge yourself you can try a Yoshi speedrun where being knocked back by enemies loses time and is actually punishing, you can try doing a damageless run or other self imposed challenges.

    • @Luchabul
      @Luchabul 11 місяців тому +3

      The real "cheats" are online play, where you can be anywhere in the level, and the standees and other players can just help you skip the real challenge of a level. And I personally don't see that as necessarily a bad thing

    • @TheYoshiFanatic

      @NCozy Good ideas, for sure. I still wish easy mode was a toggle though... difficulty through self-imposition can be great, but most people just want to play the game normally and still feel like they're getting a good enough challenge. As someone who really enjoys Yoshi's Story, I'm no stranger to self-imposed challenges, but for some reason it bothers me more in this game.
      To your point, though, the Mario games aren't usually super challenging, and like I said in the video, if you're good at the game, you won't normally get hit by enemies anyway.

      If anything, going down the crap path like a spiky tunnel and waste your time there, translates in real world like taking off the training wheels and allowing yourself to fall and stumble and take more time. Nintendo understands this, even Famitsu polls seem to suggest Japanese people prefer to retry, but consider THAT the "easy mode". But some people have a serious problem identifying how games are DESIGNED to be played, if you think an arbitrary yank back into the starting point is "difficult".
      You'd seriously be saying that mountain biking is the easy mode to riding your bicycle on the pavement. No, it's the fun you chose to have. There's abslutely no such thing as "easy" if you're an adult and actually capable of learning the ins adn outs of a game. It's just memorization that's easy, but Western audience wants to call themselves hardcore gamers and call that hard.

      @@TheYoshiFanatic Hi - I'm a new subscriber, here, and a *_*DIE-HARD*_* Yoshi fan! The one thing that bothers me the most about the Yoshis (and even Nabbit) in being "Easy" mode characters is the fact that they can't use power-ups, which means there that they can't get to certain secret exits/goals without using one of those power-ups (and thus those characters can't even be played in certain secret stages/levels without first switching to a "Normal" mode character such as Mario or Toadette to reach those secret exits/goals to unlock the secret stages/levels that are in question there) or collect certain Wonder Flowers/Wonder Seeds/10-Wonder Coins without using a power-up - case in point: some of the stages/levels in World 3 and World 6 - in the _Super Mario Bros. Wonder_ video game!! Therefore, you can't 100% complete the _Super Mario Bros. Wonder_ video game exclusively as a Yoshi (and/or as Nabbit) - which really, *_really_* figuratively sucks there!!! The underbite is actually present in the very next clip of Super Mario World, where his nose & mouth take up half of the original nose portion.
    Not to mention his overall design has returned to his more classic look & no the majorly rounded out one in previous games. He looks more like he does in Super Mario World than ever.

    I too am bummed that Yoshi was relegated as the “easy mode” character in Wonder, and can’t use powerups. (I just wanna see Fire Yoshi be canon.)
    But after playing and 100%ing the game…Yoshi was by far my favorite character to play. And that’s even when comparing him to the others and their ability to use items.
    While neat, the items this time around didn’t hook me as much as in past games, while Yoshi’s movest was plain fun to use. And outside of a few instances, you can pretty much clear any stage 100% using only Yoshi.
    I’m a veteran gamer. One who’s played games ever since the N64 days, and have had experience with extra difficult titles too. So normally, I’d hate the idea of using an easy mode character, as doing so would feel demeaning and embarrassing.
    But for Wonder? Screw it; it’s freaking Yoshi. And I love Yoshi.
    Plus, with life getting busier and busier as an adult, I don’t have the same amount of time to invest in games as I used to. So more casual experiences have become more appealing to me as of late.
    So while I do think there were a few issues that came to be with Yoshi being forced as the game’s easy mode character, all-in-all his inclusion period was a huge net positive for Wonder, and really improved my enjoyment with the game.

    • @TheYoshiFanatic
      @TheYoshiFanatic  11 місяців тому

      I resonate with a lot of that, especially being an adult with a busy life just looking for a casual gaming experience. I've got a wife and two kids, a full time job, and a lot of chores to keep me busy, so the only times I get to play games are for maybe an hour after the kids go to bed.
      I've been convinced to do a second playthrough as Yoshi only, with the self-imposed challenge of restarting the stage after getting hit twice. Not a huge fan of needing to do that, and I still wish that you could just turn easy mode off for Yoshi and even Nabbit. But if it means I get to play as Yoshi more, I'm down!

    I 100%'d the game as red yoshi for my first playthrough. I think the only sucky thing is that you require different characters in like 5 levels in order to fully beat the game, but overall I enjoyed my experience even if it was a bit easy. For fun, I started a new profile where I still play as yoshi, but if I get hit, I have to find a way to lose a life. It surprisingly made a big difference and increased the fun because of the challenge. Unfortunately, there's a lot of levels where yoshi literally can't die, so you have to exit the level and go into a different one to lose a life. It's a bit tedious but it gives an additional unintended challenge where you must 100% the level in one shot if you're unable to die. If you're able to die, you can respawn at the checkpoint. Anyway, I find that to be a lot of fun despite it being tedious. I just wish they added like a "hard mode" where you're able to die even as yoshi.

      @TheYoshiFanatic  11 місяців тому +7

      That's a good way to do it! I don't have much hope that Nintendo will add a hard mode to this game, but anything's possible. I care, and GOOD FOR HIM. I don"t want characters to just be mush, graphics options, poured into every game with time that could be used to improve the game. And oh look, Wonder is IMPROVED. People magically think that wasting on low value content is "easy" development, when it's the opposite, it takes time that doesn't materialize in equal amount of fun. Every frame of Yoshi even taking a hit would just be something out of the rest of the game.
      Mario Party 10 isn't great, and EVERY character is "the easy mode" in that they all suck, but I'm happy my favorite enemy Spike was in it. And I'm fine, if ENTIRE games with yoshi just ARE easier. But the moment players get MORE value because an character has their own PLAY STYLE, it's not good enough.
      Look, I speedrun games and they ALL get easy if you dedicate time for them, actually treat them as art. When you want it "difficult" that's just refusing to find your own angle in HOW you want to solve the game, you just want the design to eventually yield to you without becoming truly god at it. Then move on and SEE more graphics options like "playable" Yoshi being copypaste of every other character, and the next disposable game.
      I'm also so done with people hating Peachette when she's the OG Bowsette, people just hate anything JUST for being official. The appeal of Bowsette is erasure of the mind of Bowser still inside her. It's this weird fetish of forcing an official male character to BE female anda ripoff of Peach, so when Peachette is made official it doesn't do the trick, and people want "female Bowser" to be canonized. Some bizarre urge to mark your territory over actual Nintendo characters instead of knuckling down adn making your own indie game.

    • @TheYoshiFanatic
      @TheYoshiFanatic  11 місяців тому +6

      Interesting take. I can't say I agree with all of your points though. First, if anything, it took more time to make Yoshi an easy mode character, as no other character takes knockback from enemies (except for maybe Nabbit); they had to animate him differently and program the knockback properties differently from all the other characters. It would have been easier and take less time to just program that aspect the same as the rest of the characters. Also, it's worth mentioning that the development team was basically given all the time they wanted to work on this game. Development time and deadlines, while still a factor, were less of a driving force here.
      I don't think anybody is complaining that Yoshi has a flutter jump or gobble move. I'm certainly not complaining at least, and I did say in the video that it wouldn't really feel like a Yoshi experience if those aspects weren't in the game. I even advocate for ALL of the characters having unique aspects to make each character feel special, and not just a reskin of Mario (as in Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario 64 DS, Super Mario 3D World, and even Super Mario Run). The problem most people have with Yoshi being easy mode is the fact that he doesn't take damage, which does cheapen the challenge somewhat, especially in boss fights (bear in mind I'm only 3 hours into the game, so my mind absolutely could change on this aspect in particular).
      I get your point about "getting good" at the game, and being able to impose challenges on yourself to make the game more fun to play is a good way to play games, Mario related especially. I casually speedrun a couple games myself, and there is something to be said about knowing the ins and outs of the game to the point where it does become "easy" through repetition alone. But I feel like most people want the game to present a challenge that they feel satisfied in overcoming (Celeste and Metroid Dread especially come to mind). Not everyone wants to "make their own challenge", and not everyone finds that fun.

    As an aside, I think that you may be able to satisfy your needs by using mods, even if one may have an easier time with yoshi because of his moves, I think that making him be able to die is gonna make him a lot more appealing. For me, I don't own a switch, but I got really dssapointed when I heard that yoshi and co. couldn't take damage :(.

    I think people are too hard on Yoshi for not taking damage from enemies. I think Nintendo made a good compromise that he gets knocked back if hit, which doesn't happen with the other characters. If you get hit as Yoshi and are standing near a pit or lava, you're probably dead unless you can recover quickly. That doesn't happen with the other characters, you just lose your powerup. The fire and bubble flowers are far more powerful and useful than Yoshi's immunity to enemy hits.

    One thing about Yoshi I did notice is that he takes knock back from enemies. It’s a small detail on paper, but none of the other characters do. This makes it so that levels with more pits/lava/whatever can become a bit scarier knowing that if you aren’t careful you could instantly die.
    Also, I played the game alone and with people as both Yoshi and Luigi and found myself having a ton of fun in all 4 different ways to play. Yoshi in multiplayer is funny as hell. Highly recommend.
    Honestly, Yoshi just is not fun to play as in the special world levels where getting hit by enemies is the main gimmick, but levels like the final badge challenge or the jumping challenge aren’t really ruined at all.

    I don't know. I do not understand the "Yoshi is easy mode character" retoric. If Yoshi doesn't have the gobble, flutter jump, and takes damage - then it is not playable Yoshi - that is re-skinned mario. Do people want to play as Mario that happens to look like a Yoshi, or do they want to play as Yoshi? Playing as Yoshi involves having the same abilities Yoshi does. Which is Gobble, Flutter jump, and not taking damage

    • @TheYoshiFanatic
      @TheYoshiFanatic  11 місяців тому +1

      Agreed as far as the gobble and flutter jump go. Those are absolute staples in Yoshi's moveset that should absolutely be there for a playable Yoshi. The problem everyone has with Yoshi is that he doesn't take damage, and that isn't a quintessential Yoshi trait. Sure, he doesn't take damage in the Yoshi's Island games, but that's only half of the Yoshi games. In Yoshi's Story, Topsy-Turvy, Woolly World and Crafted World, Yoshi does have a health meter. And even in the Yoshi's Island series, there was a health meter of sorts, just not for Yoshi. You still had to be mindful of enemies and damaging hazards.
      Yoshi doesn't necessarily take damage in most Super Mario games, but in the vast majority of them, he's more of a power-up than he is a playable character. In the only other Super Mario games that Yoshi is playable (Super Mario 64 DS and Super Mario Run), he takes damage just like everyone else. Meanwhile, in this game, Yoshi can stand in the corner of the room for the Bowser Junior boss fights, and eventually, he'll be knocked back against the wall and land on top of Bowser Junior enough times that he'll win without moving at all. And while the knockback from enemies is a factor, for the most part, it's just not the same as if Yoshi could take damage, and the game is still substantially easier when you play as Yoshi.

    I think Yoshi as a character is fine as he is, with the flutter jump and tongue, I think having those powers and not being able to use power ups is already a great trade off. However, the immortality is what makes him unfun to play as, in my opinion, Yoshi could shrink when taking damage like a normal character, and any power up should act as a regular mushroom for him, just increase his size. Maybe even make so when he's small he can't eat enemies, I don't know. We've seen baby sized Yoshis in the original Super Mario world, so I don't think seeing a small Yoshi would be a bad idea.

    If you remove say, wall kick, you're locked out of beating special world 2 for example. It'd be like if some levels couldn't be beaten without flutter jump, or if some levels would require you to play as Luigi for a higher jump, or as Peach for a float.
    Of course that could be an awesome game, where different characters have different branching routes through a level, but that's a gimmick and game all on its own. While having a take damage toggle would've been neat, overall I think the way they went about it was the right call.

    • @TheYoshiFanatic

    I would be so happy if they stuck with this design for future games isntead of going back to the fully upright, short, wierd humanoid yoshi, that one never sat right with me even if I do love yoshi

    Idea: Rather than altering the existing base game, add a "Challange mode", where the characters have their unique traits, Yoshis and Nabbit both gain the ability to use items, and lose their invincibility. Challenge mode now also uses the NES Super Mario Brothers 1 style of taking damage, where any hit reverts you to Small Mario regardless of what powerup you had. Maybe also put more enemies/remix levels a bit, it could be similar to Ocarina of Time's Master Mode. Note: If a character uses a badge in which they already have the unique trait of, the badge will increase it's effect by 50%

All of Yoshi’s attributes are in spirit of his character and it’s nice accessibility feature for younger or inexperienced players and parents who want to play with their kids. As far as visuals go, his new model actually reflects his classic artwork and is much more dinosaur-like and I couldn’t be happier to be honest. He’s an absolute pleasure to play with.

      It's really just the no-damage the bothers me. Super Mario 64 DS and Super Mario Run both allowed Yoshi to take damage, and they still stayed true to what makes Yoshi so much fun.
      I like the visual style too. It's neat that they kinda mixed his old and new style, even making him look more dinosaur-like, holding his arms tight to his side like a raptor would. The only thing I don't like is the "frog face", which I acquiesce is likely a callback to some of the official artwork for Super Mario World. I just like the puffy-cheek design from most of the other games better than the "frog face".

    Honestly I hate to say it but I think Wonder might have been rushed in some areas and that may be why all the characters except Yoshi and Nabbit play identically. I think the game was like 95% to completion but they never really added bosses and to save development time and resources, just made very character except Yoshi play identically and nixed powerups for Yoshi. It may also have to do with level design being far easier on the development side with everyone playing identically (aside from Yoshi just having a few innate boosts) rather than dealing with something like Luigi can jump higher, blue toad is faster but jumps low, Peach can float and having to deal with the badge system. It feels like they had just enough time to produce a great game by christmas when they could have produced the best game by March or April.

    I think a lot of the character design decisions you don’t like here make a lot more sense when you consider the multiplayer options. The main characters all play the same so that you can easily tell your character apart on a busy screen (in local or online) without the gameplay changing. The alternative would be palette swaps, which could get confusing with abilities like the fire flower and bubble. In this context, Yoshi works much like he does in Super Mario world: players can mount on Yoshi and take advantage of his moveset, but Yoshi doesn’t immediately die when he gets hit, so you can find him and hop back on.

    • @TheYoshiFanatic

    New subscriber here. And I agree with you in some cases. Yoshi is also my favorite character and it did kinda sadden me a little bit that he’s stuck on easy mode with Nabbit. And the face he makes when eating stuff doesn’t bother me too much because it’s funny to me and I won’t let that stop me for not playing as him lol. And l yes I think that easy mode should be an option not a restriction because yeah we Got Toadette as a character again but she’s no long in easy mode because they made everyone almost the exact same despite their abilities and flaws. But if they were to even out the characters they wouldn’t have to worry about placing anyone in easy mode and make that be an option you can toggle while still play with other characters besides Yoshi. Bring back the crown for toadette, make better glides for Peach and Daisy give Luigi higher jumps and make Mario have a little bit more I-frames and give Yoshi his egg throwing mechanic and let Nabbit be Nabbit. But also make sure that the gameplay is balance like what you said for Yoshi with the flutter kicks but can’t do wall kicks because they both get the job done anyway, Luigi making him a bit tougher to control but jumps higher, make Daisy more powerful with the power ups she uses but her glide shorter, and so on. Otherwise If I get my own copy I wouldn’t mind beating the game with Yoshi because I also got Yellow Toad in the mix so it’s honestly a win win for my personal benefit. • @TheYoshiFanatic

      I'm not really sure why they did that. They've given Yoshi the puffed up cheeks in many games with 3D models (Yoshi's Woolly World and Crafted World, New Super Mario Bros games and Mario Maker, etc). I saw someone say that it's a callback to some Japanese official artwork for Super Mario World, but I think that's a stretch.

      @@TheYoshiFanatic I'm sorry but compared to what they've done with the other characters, I don't think its a stretch in the slightest that they've reference old Yoshi artwork and his SMW sprite for when holding something in his mouth. At most it could be a potential misinterpretation of it, but its clear that artwork has been the main inspiration for nearly everything artstyle wise.
      As for what I'd like about Yoshi moveset wise, is if he was able to eat enemies above him and throw eggs like in Yoshi's Island. I feel him using power-ups would just defeat the purpose of Yoshi being Yoshi, *however* it'd be great if he'd take damage like in Super Mario Run, and be limited to only using Super Mushrooms as a trade-off for his built-in abilities.

    I think tying difficulty not to an abstract option in the menu, but as individual characters that fit with their style, is a very Nintendo thing to do, and is much better for Wonder. Making the toggle different for every player in local co-op, or forcing every player to use the same difficulty would suck. As a Yoshi fan, I'm not playing as Yoshi unless I'm playing with my daughter (so she can ride my back), and I think that's totally fine, and was the right decision by Nintendo.
    Now, if I was allowed to make a change, I'd make it so there's 4 invincible characters (4 colors of Nabbit, 4 other characters, make the Toads invincible, whatever), and then let Yoshi die but keep his other abilities. Nabbit feels like a weird inclusion as a "not as easy" character but being the only one available, and Yoshi's moves are already insanely powerful. It would have given 3 unique playstyles instead of 2 1/2, and an entire family can play however they want. That, or like you suggest, just making everyone play differently.

      I would like to ask, why would it suck? It would be an option when selecting a character that would take half a second or a button press while selecting a character that only effects the user. It would be a net positive for almost everyone.
      This would be incredibly easy in local co-op as you do have to select a character.

      @@Buglin_Burger7878 It's about framing the mechanic, and about game feel. Young children who might benefit from an easy mode might deliberately avoid it out of principle and ruin their enjoyment of a game that's not meant to be that difficult anyway. Extremely young children that's only 4 or 5 might have a harder time understanding what it's there for rather than simply saying ___ can't get hurt. It gives the impression that this is "an easier, but mostly different, way to play" instead of a "you can turn this on if you suck". Many badges make the game easier too, but they're not just labeled as an easy or accessibility option, because they're there to just be interesting gameplay more than anything.
      It also creates better cohesiveness and understanding. When playing online, you immediately understand what a player can do just by looking at them. When dealing with the chaos of 4 local multiplayer, "yellow Yoshi and Nabbit are fine here" is quicker than "okay, Jameson is Mario and Timmy is Peach, both of them turned on invincibility and flutter jump".
      As a side note, I think the easier character being a gender neutral cool yet cute dinosaur is way better than putting it on the girly toad that turns into a princess. Young boys aren't necessarily going to be turned off by it, and everybody can enjoy it.
      I always prefer difficulty modifiers that are baked naturally into the game versus being barred behind a menu option that people would only ever open as a response to feeling defeated, that's not fun. Adding that complexity into the people you play as simplified things and makes everything just flow together better. No decision in any game benefits everyone, that's physically impossible considering everyone has different tastes. But this decision fits into the mold of the rest of the game's design nicely, and even a Yoshi obsessed fan who wants to experience difficulty in Wonder is only mildly upset. Sucks for the fanatic, I can empathize with that, but I'd still call the decision by Nintendo to be a win.

    Actually the reason yoshi puts his lips in his nose when he has something in his mouth is because of some old official art of mario world so technically yoshi is now even more canon

    • @TheYoshiFanatic

      I have seen people refer to a piece of Super Mario World artwork where Yoshi's lip and cheeks are puffed up. But his lip didn't wrap around his nose like it does in this game, so I do think the underbite in Mario Wonder is at least a misinterpretation of the classic artwork.

    • @TheYoshiFanatic
      @TheYoshiFanatic  11 місяців тому

      That's a good point, but I think there's room for both badges and unique character attributes. Not like it's a deal-breaker that most characters are reskins of Mario, but it is a bit less interesting I think.

    The problem with giving every character their unique strengths and weaknesses is that people would just play the best character and avoid the worst one. In 3D world everyone I know played Toad and hated playing as Peach...
    I personally think they did a good job getting rid of those special characteristics and basically turning them into badges, that way you can still have a Luigi with a higher Jump or a peach with a parachute-like ability.
    Lets also not ignore that the goal of the developers is to avoid arguments between kids during local multiplayer in their own households, that's literally the reason why now there are two princesses.

    • @TheYoshiFanatic
      @TheYoshiFanatic  11 місяців тому +4

      Interesting. I'm only three hours into the game, so I don't know about all the badges. That's really cool!
      But regarding the strengths and weaknesses, I find Nintendo does a decent job of balancing the characters so that there's not really a "best" or "worst" character; it's usually subjective based on what your preferences are. Like to run fast? Then Toad's your guy. Having a tough time with jumps? Maybe try Peach or Luigi. I usually go with Mario since he's decent at everything.

    • @princesscherry5217
      @princesscherry5217 11 місяців тому

      i’ve played peach since it’s been an option 🫣 they took out her floating ability but they added badges that give the same effect so she was definitely a useful character to play. but she is slow 😩

    • @Buglin_Burger7878
      @Buglin_Burger7878 11 місяців тому

      Toad isn't the best character though, Peach is due to her hover and most threats being death pits or on the ground.
      Or to be more precise in the group of people I interact with Peach is agreed to be the best while in the group you interact with Toad is agreed to be the best. Meaning there is no best character rather it is a best character for your preferences to either augment your strengths or cover your weaknesses or just change things up.
