Every few months or so I spray a few coats of food grade mold release on the evaporator while it is dry and that helps the ice fall off while harvesting.
At first I thought the same thing. Then i realized that he is in the business of maintaining and repairing refrigeration systems and not in the business of food service. I assume that it would be the responsibility of the business owner to clean and sanitize the unit after the service call.
Thanks for the information. Mine does the same thing. Haven’t checked for loose fins but the nickel has worn down to copper in spots. That’s what holding the ice on for too long. Uggh. New ice head. Crap!!! But I got 16 years out of this one. Can’t complain.
I went to the loose fins and crisped one end by lightly tapping with hammer and flat head screw driver. This secure the fins against the plate. I did this over three months ago. Perfect fix. Fixed my problem. Thanks lot
the white of the ice is being caused by a water issue, not being filtered plus/or high hardness will cause it. Sometime it is also a lack of water flow and the ice is being made from the atmosphere ( dehumidifying you might say. )
New sub from Bama, like the Dear Momma playing you're my kind of homie. I like your content and I'm learning so much. Took my home inspector pretest and only missed out on HVAC. Was never a service tech just an installer so no real experience.
I love how you all complain about the bare hands and throwing the ice back in the bin. We wear rubber gloves to br professional but if you look at the slime that builds up in those machines you would puke. And never go to the establishment again. Restaurant owners never ever clean their ice machines. That's why they go down and we keep in business as service techs. Next time you go out to eat, ask the server if you can walk into the kitchen. LOL!!! You'll be cooking at home from that they forward. Obviously the remarks made by those people never drank from a garden hose. :-)
it can be fixed, but the evaporator isn't under warranty, and the cost is about 1/2 that of a new unit. But I'll bet the condenser was caked in gunk which could explain slow production or lack of it. So a combination a bad evaporator (flaking) and probably caked condenser and water issues ( that and the system was dirty as heck, which didn't help that poor thing. )
I have 2 10 year old scottsman prodigys with all the nickle gone on them and exposed copper in every single grid. The grid pushes out from time to time and it wont harvest. So every so often i take a hammer to the grid and knock it back in place and it will work well again. Im only doing this to get the cheap hotel by until they replace them.
I have one right now at the local Mexican joint and there is no nickel left it’s straight copper lol most of the plates are completely loose, so what they do is in between harvest cycles they beat the plates back in ! They are sooo cheap it’s annoying haha
Hey Dave here in Alabama the DOT will let anyone drive virtually any car with no insurance. Some of the cars you come up on you can’t tell what kind of car it is till you get past the smoke cloud coming out of the tail pipe and get a look at whats left of the front end. Most of the fire hydrants are M&H 929 designed to be able to be hit by a car and the stem breaks to valve to prevent the classic geyser. Which takes all the fun out of hydrant collisions. LOL 😂 Nice video on that old beast of an ice machine. Keep them coming I always look forward to your uploads.
Hay Dave, Been learning a ton from you I'm in NC other side of the country . Keep it up man love the vids . I'v been HVAC tech now for 7 yrs .Doing a lot of geothermal hvac . Starting to transition into refrigeration and its a slight change of pace and total different world your vids are inspiring thanks a lot .would love to here from on a video of mine. Thanks again bro.
Nickels coming off too, could use a good cleaning with a spray bottle and straight ice machine cleaner. Spray it on the plates and let it sit for 10-15 minutes and then scrub it with a brush. Rinse off, might help for a little while. Definitely will have to replace soon with the grids loosening up
Been seeing a lot of this lately on S series manitowoc. We still have a few old Q series going strong, not sure if they started making them differently but those grids just don’t seem to last now.
Not that I know the typical lifespan of the evap coil but I worked on a 20 year old model recently with some nickel flaking and it still makes decent ice.
brad mironik they will. But if the grid gets loose it can cause harvest issues like this machine has. There are some out there making ice with missing rows of the grid making ice fingers.
Also water quality goes a long way to preserving the nickel. I've done ph tests on inlet water using litmus paper. If the water in acidic or has high iron content the plates can wear down quickly.
Hi ,I have an Ice o matic 1406fo2 (220v) it use to fill the bin in a few hours now on average it produces about 10 bags per day . I've noticed on the left side it takes a long time to release the ice and by that time it becomes deformed .... I'm in Trinidad, I've had technicians look at it , serviced it said it's working fine ,but it's not ,please help
I have just installed a brand new Scotsman Half Dice Cube machine and the cubes are stuck together like your video. Is it supposed to be like that? With my old machine they were all separate when released.
is there a way to fix it,, maybe replace the evaporator? BTW Ty for posting this I'm having the same prob, the ice wont fall. ill go check for loose fins.
weird exact same machine for one of my fish markets except remote condenser .. same exact thing .. last week.. but he wants to invest .. build a walk in fridge with the shoot ice maker ontop.
@@NorCal-refrigeration sure enough. The one I’m working on has the loose fins as well. Im trying to think of anyway to fix that issue but obviously can’t braze this. Or put any type of sealer to fix the water from going behind the cracked edges.
Quick question. On the IY series does a thermistor error shut down the unit. I'm pretty sure tech support told me it's just for monitoring, for the technicians convenience. Does the error cause the machine to do anything other than flash an alarm?
Jeremy Voshage most manufacturers give an estimated life span of 10 years on an ice machine. They will last longer than that in most cases. But if a machine is beat, rusting out and 10 years old or close to it it’s time to look at replacement.
Jeremy Voshage: No question. There'd be quite a market if we could replace the evap under 750 P+L.! But when the evap COSTS that much and more, it's not a reasonable fixer upper. I could hire a couple of guys to do nothing but evaps if we could get them cheaper! They are mostly a moderate part to replace. Some are downright easy. I was doing warranty work for one of the big companies and had a run of bad evaps that I had gotten down to 80-90 minutes or less!
I have a question, sometimes, the scotsman ice machine stays in "harvest time blinks" and then turns off the machine, then a few seconds later starts the machine again. is this normal?
I'm working on a hoshizaki ice maker I've replace the float switch it keeps going into harvest when the float switch is working properly and in the up position what would cause it to go into harvest without the float switch telling it to
The dump valves get mineral deposits in them and they don't seal properly allowing the water to drain thus triggering premature harvest. It's easy to remove the valve, disassemble it and clean it.
The ice can break away if the by pass temperature is correct. Multiple problems cause poor harvest. Plating gone, by pass valve malfunction and so on. 404a at 250psig at harvest should free most ice cells if of proper thickness. Good video!
