The opening song here is 'Waiting Man'. It was always a blast to play'. I nicked the idea of laying out the Simmons Drums flat for two players facing each other from attending a performance of Steve Reich’s ‘Drumming’. Hope you don’t mind, Steve, but as you know, it’s not where you take it from, it’s where you take it to that counts. The groove after the breakdown is OK, but it really settles at around 6’50”.
Мне 60.Слушаю уже 42 года.Это Музыка с большой буквы.Все участники группы гениальны!!!!!!
Each member looks like a slightly different kind of Bond villain
😂
Incredibly accurate.
YES !!!!!!!
Definitely, I've thought the same thing !!!!!!!!
😂
Belew as an evil 80s yuppie out to take financial control of the world, Bruford definitely has a lair on a tropical island, Levin is the henchman and Fripp has a German accent and a lot of questions to answer about what he did in the war!
My 30y/o cousin had never heard KC.
“They sound like evil Talking Heads….”
I had no argument. Speechless.
That's certainly not untrue 😄!
i'm sure Adrian Belew has something to do with that
That is a great description.
Love it!
Simply a different kind of intensity.
I am 86 years old .y first experience listening to this type of music. Great. Thanks
never too late

You may say an evolution to this with some additional influencers.
Pero vaya vaya..los vi en bs as ..con sus 3 baterias enfrente ..inigualables...siempre pensé..que era una música virtuosa..me da siempre la impresión de bajón.
Dorothy l'm 66 and just discovered a singer named Happy Rhodes. I was exposed to her by another King Crimson fan.
Tony levin has looked like that for 50 years. He’s made a massive wardrobe change, though. From white jacket to white T shirt.

@@BrickBlacktoe fripps wife? Yea. Got to say she is pretty hot but Iam a woman and she doesn't do much for me 😀

The Beato interview with Adrian, Tony, and Danny brought me here and all i can say is wow! I had heard the name before but never researched, and this is one of the best rock/jazz/progressive fusions i've ever heard! I wish i wouldn't have been a baby in the 80s, the sounds and rhythms these guys are making are stellar!
I bet you’re not alone in that the Beato interview was perfectly timed to expose them again!!! I was very much around in the 80’s, but honestly miss them… Well, better late than never! Definitely a fan now 🤗🤗🤗.. just too bad tickets for the show were incredibly expensive and sold out really quickly!! Hopefully they’ll do a stream or offer a way to see some of the show virtually.
Better late to the party then to miss it completely...the Rick Beato interview was stellar and I'm 60 and thankful to have seen them in NYC in 82 & 84..the Beat Shows are going to be mind numbing....hope you get to see them.!
I have been a devoted fan since the first time I heard Three of a Perfect Pair. Got to see KC a few years back and felt blessed. I hope to get to see Beat, but tickets are way up there.
Beato
I got my tickets for the Clearwater show at Ruth Eckerd Hall. 9/28 I can’t wait.
I really miss the Belew version of King Crimson. He brought a warmth and humor to the sound.
Him and levin brought humor to such a typically dark band
He came from Zappa so he was definitely a humor in music type
He is a natural.
Agree.
maybe im an edgy spoilsport but i prefer the darker king crimson, love levin so much though and elephant talk is a great song
I was there, at this very concert, an innocent 18 year old drummer of four years. This show blew the top right off my head and is a pivotal point in my music journey. Thank you for this.
I was at the Nuremburg show 24 days before this one. I have NO idea why I didn't go to the Munich show since I was stationed in Augsburg at the time.
Saw them 2 months before this date - at Merriweather Post Pavilion - about midway between Baltimore & D.C. - such fond memories of an amazing show.
I was a 17 y.o. drummer and watched it on TV, changed my life.
I was born in 1982. Thankfully UA-cam has made this moment available to me. Must have been amazing to have been there! Long live King Crimson!
Well, talking ab personal life as in this thread lol, in 1982 I was 15 and I remember we'd say, a partner of college and me, "we must like KC in the end. If we fail, we are real losers forever".
We made a huge effort listening to several Lps at a time. Sometime we lost faith but by relistening over and over, we could happily say "we like KC!!!" 🤔😁
Tonight is my first exposure to King Crimson. This is music from the soul.
I think it's fantastic you found the most innovative musicians ever. The more you listen to many songs you will hear things you never heard the first ten times you listened. It brings me joy to know this magic is still being discovered.
@@obrien99999 I love their live shows too.(On UA-cam) Amazing talent and atmosphere.
yeah you know regardless of how the music rubs you it's so abundantly clear that these cats really believed in what they were doing: so beautiful!
Oh wow! I bought tickets to a concert in the winter of 1969. King Crimson was the "warm up band". To this day, I cannot remember who the top-3:55 billed band that I actually paid to see even was! That's how's blown away I was of Crimson. Please listen to their LPs in order of release. In the Court of the Crimson King is a masterpiece. What an awesome band!
@@BritIronRebel I agree 100% that a new listener should listen to the discography in order of release. To hear the evolution or just the changes over time is a rich journey, especially for a band like KC that has/had produced such rich art over 50+ years.
Adrian Belew is the man. Every time he adds his craziness to bands its even more worth to watch and listen.
He had that Richard Speck thing going on, if it wasn't for music his path could have been dark...
When I first heard KC's piece 'The Power To Believe', my first thought was "Belew is recycling lyrics from his 'All Her Love Is Mine'". I prefer that solo piece.
Adrian Belew has an incredible voice. And his guitar skills compliment Robert’s. What a great lineup of musicians.
Yep. Belew's terrific. Let's be honest: when Zappa calls and asks if you wanna play in his band, you know you're doing something right. 😁
@@EleanorPeterson well, I don't know...he DID ring up Micky Dolenz once in 1970, following the dissolution of the first Mothers, to offer him the drummer's chair. While certainly a proven comic genius, Dolenz was a mediocre drummer at best. At least at that time.
9:07 the fact that the band employed 2 roadies/drum techs who could easily pass as Bill Bruford and Adrian Belew's body doubles to remove Bruford and Belew's percussion kits off stage is just so Crimsonesque
HILARIOUSLY SPOT-ON!

Levin is a machine. The ultimate chameleon. Belew is precise and unpredictable. Fripp, the perfect poker face and Bruford…. say no more - simply SPECTACULAR! ❤
I went to a King Crimson concert at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, California during the Discipline Tour. I'd never heard any music by King Crimson, but I had seen the Discipline album jacket in the stores. Bill Bruford's name on a sticker on the cellophane wrapping made me buy a concert ticket. I didn't have any friends that were interested, so I went alone. I was majoring in classical guitar performance in college, already a veteran of local rock bands, intrigued by innovative, artistic music. King Crimson was astonishing, the perfect way to get acquainted. Most people want to know the songs before they go to a concert, but not me. The best way to experience music the first time is live. My seat was fairly close to the stage, and I was aghast that Bruford was playing a little bell instead of a hi-hat, and playing busy patterns on little tomtoms. I'd never experienced the Chapman stick before, and Adrian Belew's rhythms, noises and singing were a revelation. The sound and look of this band was beyond unique. I became a fan instantly. God Bless the Krim!
Awesome - what a memory, and great decision to buy that ticket!

Adrian Belew…. Damn….
When I heard "THIS" for the first time in the 80s I was like
"WTF?? is this??? This is BRILLIANT!!!"
40 years later its still ahead of its time.
Discipline era Crim gave birth to a whole sub genre & scene that are still taking those ideas appart. That’s heritage right there.
I mean, I'm still introducing people to Yes, Twin Peaks, Tangerine Dream and Isao Tomita. It's a long road.
"The Sheltering Sky" - wow. This is lineup of Crimson that I would call the perfect band, all playing their part to create a whole sound that is superb.
Just remembered when my friend brought a copy of “Beat” to my dorm room. When I heard the Chapman Stick kicking into overdrive in “Neal and Jack and Me”, I jumped out of my seat because I recognized that it was the same instrument from Peter Gabriel’s track “I Don’t Remember”. My friend said to me “this is what ‘80’s music’ should sound like”.
Thanks for making this available.
same artist playing the Chapman Stick on both albums, wonderful to be blessed enough to have seen Tony Levin with both bands during those amazing days of our youth.... the 1980's

I'm flabbergasted, honored & grateful in the most musical way all at once. Magical Concert to boot!

The Mighty.......Beat, Discipline and Three of a perfect Pair were genius albums that will never be fully appreciated.
This is everything music should be
Damn this is an absolute banger
No label can properly define these superior pieces of contemporary music. Nothing alike was being played in 81/83 neither came anywhere near to these geniuses' vision.
This KC incarnation is simply NECESSARY to music: it fills a space that was created from nothing. The perfect 4 are creating a new world as if gods using a golem-like matter. It's the discipline of higher minds at work, based on Space rythms, sacred geometries, numerical series.
Thanks Mr Bruford: it's earthly gods' master work
Saying someone is “the best” at something is entirely a subjective thing, but you can easily make the argument that each of these guys is, if not “the best” at their respective instruments, are certainly “among the best.”
What an incredible collection of virtuoso musical talent.
They are the best at being their own selves as musicians and working together toward the common goal, a lesson for us all, quit copying and be yourself.
Well, certainly Tony Levin.
Does anybody else on earth even play a Chapman Stick? Lol
Same can be said of Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, Bill Bruford, Alan White.
Well, Adrian Belew has the talent of 10 musicians put together.
The more I look at it, the more I like it...
Adrian Belew seems like such a joyful guy. I bet a lot of people who had no idea what they were getting into were very glad he was there, smiling and dancing.
as a Frank Zappa's disciple, from Zappa's band, he must be a joyfull guy
He's still a joyful performer.
Go see his Power Trio if you get a chance - You won't be disappointed.

I've always found that Robert Fripp looks more like a psychiatrist than a musician.
It looks like a mad scientist, or maybe he is🤔
So, how does that make you feel? Hmmm. Interesting.

At first I thought Adrian Belew had watched too much Miami Vice with the pink suit and white t-shirt, but this concert was almost exactly 2 years before that TV show premiered.

I discovered King Crimson during this incarnation. After that, I learned to follow musicians rather than bands, and new musical worlds opened up to me.
This was an especially good incarnation of KC. While always a collective of great musicians, this lineup was perhaps the most accessible. The music was more upbeat than previous KC material and the stage presence was animated and the band just looked like they were having fun. I've always been a fan, right from The Court of the Crimson King through the John Wetton days to when Adrian Belew joined and Tony Levin took over bass. TL was the best bass player KC ever had. BB was the most interesting percussionist.

No way can this compare to the 70s KC…
I saw this version several times. I would much rather have seen the early 70s version with Wetton, Bruford, and Muir.
To me, this was the freshest and most innovative KC line-up by far. The time was very interesting, with new wave coming in and Adrian Belew reinventing progressive songwriting with his Bowie influence. This was incredibly advanced music and artistic vision, especially in 1982. They brought together the minimalism of new wave and the complexity of prog in an amazing way.

AN OFFICIAL VERSION OF THIS UPLOADED TO UA-cam! Massive thanks Buford!
Just saw In The Court of the Crimson King last weekend, and I was hungry to see the band I saw in 84.
Saw them Nov. 16, 1981. Discipline tour.
I was glued to my chair.
I couldn't move.
I didn't want to
Incredible that this was in 1982 - the sounds and tones are way ahead of their time. You wouldn't hear this kind of bass and drum sound become more popular until the 90's.
Always wished I could have been aware of this incarnation of the mighty Crim. when it was alive and well. But alas... being born in ‘74 was just a little too late. Still... the Discipline album is a masterpiece in my humble opinion.
Well they came back in the 90s, and carried on for a few years. "Thrak" was probably my second Robbie and the Crims album, I was born in 74.
I was fortunate to see them in the 90’s
at ‘The Warehouse’ in Toronto.
There was no seating so I could get
15 feet from the stage. Amazing
performance.
I was born in 74 and saw these guys about 10 years ago in Florida. It was amaze.
Aside from the fact that this line up from King Crimson was stellar I love the juxtapose of the cool and precise appearance of Robert against the more emotional and swinging stance of Adrian.
Awsome! The best Band in the world!

Hi Bill I've been a fan of yours from 1973, I was eleven then when listened Close to the Edge for the first time in my country, Argentina.
I was lucky to see you in Buenos Aires with KC in 1994 when the B'Boom gig.
Let me say I`ve always been an admirer of your drumming and remember the early 90's when I got One of a Kind and Gradually going Tornado, 2 superb jazz rock albums with marvellous musicians such as Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Berlin and Dave Stewart and yourself.
I think it's a real pity you finally retired from drumming, undoubtedly you are one of the best frummers of rock history and would still have so much to give to the world of music!

Having seen the NYC Show on the pier a month or so earlier, I recall marveling at the brightness of all the new technology that these four brought to the music with their newfangled v drums, synth guitars and sticks. It all felt so innovative. It still does.
My first exposure to this iteration of KC was their appearance on ABC's FRIDAYS television program. They started off by doing "Elephant Talk" and I was blown away by how *nobody* on that stage was doing anything anyone would consider *normal*. This remains my favorite KC era just from the sensibilities they brought to the music and the audacity and enthusiasm of it all.
I recall how uncomfortable the bleachers were on that pier. Amazing show for a fifteen year old just finding Real music.
@@hubbsllc I remember watching a lot of incredible new bands on the FRIDAYS show.

I believe I was there. Definitely saw this lineup on a pier in NYC at some point. I went with my then-wife, a drummer. We didn't always agree on everything, but we were both huge Bruford fans going back to the Yes days.
Saw an earlier lineup (Fripp, Bruford, Wetton, Cross) at least twice. Couldn't choose between them on vinyl, but I think this lineup was better live.
