PANO is a freak'n GEM! A dozen of us out there in March for a week and there was more than enough terrain for all ski levels. Thanks for another video!
Did a couple of seasons at Pano. Always said it's a shame it doesn't get as much snow as other nearby resorts such as Kicking Horse or Louise, becuase it's got some unbelievable terrain. Would be a world-class resort if it had Whitewater's annual snow for sure. That being said, as nobody from Calgary can be bothered to drive past Sunshine or Louise, it means Panorama is usually a ghost town so you have the place to yourself, a pow day therefore turns into 2 or 3 days of fresh lines if you know where to look.
I've only ever been to Panorama twice. Once was for a giant slalom race I finished in 8th place and a couple of years prior was my first visit under interesting circumstances. My older sister had a school project to interview an elite athlete. In 1980 Steve Podborski was a household name in Canada. He was a HUGE ski racing star on his way to being the first non-European to win the overall World Cup downhill season and he medaled at the Lake Placid Olympics. He was on TV commercials and, generally, one of the most recognizable Canadians around the World. There was a race at Panorama. It wasn't a World Cup downhill but it might have been the Canadian National Championship. My dad convinced my sister that she should try to get an interview with Podborski by simply approaching him as soon as he was done racing for the day. So while I cruised around the mountain sampling all it had to offer for several hours my sister planted herself at the only exit from the race finish area and had to just stand there and wait for a couple hours. As I was skiing I saw that a crew was removing gates from the downhill run. Race over. So I cruised down to the finish area and lo and behold here is my sister sticking a tape recorder in the face of one of the country's biggest names in sport. I got there just in time to hear her hard hitting wind-up question for this skiing icon. "Why do you wear an earring?" We had driven 3 hours from Calgary so my sister could ask Steve Podborski about his...earring. Oh well, I got to miss school and ski instead! Panorama 44 years ago was vastly different than it is now. There is all sorts of terrain with lift access that did not exist back then at all. I'd like to sample modern day Panorama. BTW: have you seen the movie ALIVE! about the plane that crashed high in the Andes 50 years ago and the survivors resorted to cannibalism? Great book and great movie. All the Andes mountain footage - most of the movie - was shot high up on Panorama's slopes. I heard the survivor who worked on the movie as the main consultant say that the crew absolutely loved being up at Panorama.
@@riseandalpine If memory serves me correctly the earring was a suggestion from his girlfriend that become a good luck charm of sorts. I can assure you that earrings were not a popular fashion choice for Canadian men in 1980. I also attended World Cup Downhill races at Lake Louise in the early 80's and there would be course workers and personnel stationed along the course that were not allowed to be wearing all red or all blue because racers cornering at over 100km/h are looking for the next red or blue gate and are going too fast to correct themselves if they mistake a person for a gate. I remember hearing that at a Louise downhill and it absolutely fed my desire to experience racing at those speeds. Anyway you must watch ALIVE!. It is a classic of the survival drama genre. All true.
Panorama is awesome. We stayed in a cabin that you could just strap in and go straight down to the lift. That winter was crazy and I actually dropped down off the roof of the cabin and we built a small kicker at the bottom that sent me flying but I stayed up landed it. snow was up to the gutters along the roof.
Nice to see you highlighting all the great ski resorts in BC. Whistler gets the worldwide marketing yet so many people I speak with on the chair visiting Whistler have never heard of the other resorts. Somebody needs to put together a 14 day 6 mountain tour on a coach bus for visiting tourists. Call it 'High in the Canadian Rockies' so snowboarders have a reason to go too :)
That would be an awesome tour. To be honest, I probably wouldn't recommend Whistler to most skiers for a trip, there's so many other awesome places out there and if you don't know how to work Whistler it can be quite the gong show.
I grew up skiing in Panorama. Second-longest vertical after Whistler I believe. Didn't have the Snow Cat ride nor the bowl when I used to ski there., but so nice to ski right back to the front door of the condo. Keep the vids coming guys!!
Just found your channel a few days ago, probably the best ski content on youtube. Most people point their cameras down to much to focus on how theyre skiing, you have perfect angle to show off the mountain. Love the videos!
Been waiting for a Panorama vid! The place is awesome. I grew up down in Montana and Panorama is the only place north of the border that I’ve managed to ride. Didn’t explore that much of it as I was young and riding alone a lot of the time but I really wanna go back!
@@riseandalpine its pretty sweet! Nothing like Whistler and such unless you go to Big Sky maybe but we have a lot of fun independently owned hills that are pretty awesome. My local one is Snowbowl which is rad if the snow is good. Not a ton of Alpine here tho.
Nice work James, great video of Panorama, you got the conditions still. Super tree work. Last time I was there was for RK Heli and skied at the resort through minus 30C , never again will I subject myself to that kind of cold. Stay spicy and Peace out.
one of my favorite things to do on youtube is watch your skiing videos, and follow you down the mountain with a trail map on a separate tab. its really cool when you post the run you're on man! I love seeing what it looks like irl, keep it up!
Aussie skier here. I've been hoping for a Pano vid. I went there on the same road trip as Fernie (commented on that vid too) and while Fernie seems to get more snow, Pano is a waaaay more flowy mountain. I feel like you just ski and ski and ski at Pano. To me it's a bit like Whistler without the extreme stuff but importantly without the crowds. The groomers are nice n wide everywhere and there are lots of rollers on that sun bowl side which I was pleased to see you ripping up. Taynton is great too. Literally endless lines in there. I'm in my 50s these days and don't really need the whole Kicking Horse extreme thing or the Whistler crowds or double black chutes. If I ever get back to BC, Pano will be my first and possibly only stop.
Glad you liked Pano so much. I agree. Pano is very similar to Blackcomb. Whistler side has pretty wacky flow, more like Fernie but gives it character. You can ski unlimited laps at Pano. Straight fall line all day long!
I liked it before watching because your output is quite inspiring/ridiculous, dude. Very impressive itinerary, it's going to take me years to visit all these places but I do intend to. Keep it up👍🤙
The 3 stooges !!!!!!!! Make me smile. Great description. Should make a small TV mini series 😁😁. PS Make it back soon an safely, Blackcomb close April 14.
Thanks Jean :). Don't worry, these videos are a little back logged now and I've already made it back for some Blackcomb turns on this recent storm. Those videos will be out 2 weeks from now :).
Wwnt to pano for the first time a couple weeks ago and it was rad! The village has big castle vibes and the terrain is sweet. I got a sled tow up to taynton bowl to see the terrain and it looks nuts! Taynton was closed because the avy hazard was too high with the heat tho
while their snow coverage can be pretty questionable for stretches, taynton has such good terrain. Had probably my best day of resort skiing ever there when we were first on the summit quad after it had been closed for a few days, and a quiet week. Waist deep laps in taynton for the whole day. Would love to revisit with some skins to make lapping taynton easier.
Ahh Pano…Steep Concrete Highways Through the Trees…Watch out for the cat tracks you can launch into low earth orbit if you don’t pre-jump enough…..I see you partaking of Kootenay Pale Ale, a BC fave for me.

Terrain is sick, but the snow can be light. All the locals and lifties seemed to be in great spirits though. I bet it's an awesome place to live for the winter
Pano! Situated right in the Rocky Mountain Donught Anomaly. In fact, Pano IS the Rocky Mountain Donught Anomaly. So many high speed races there as a yoot. The last time I skied Panorama a high-pressure system moved in. It was between 20 and 30 below zero all week, but a pocket of much warmer air got trapped in Taynton Bowl. Every time we did a lap, we'd sweat our asses off with all the layers on. By the time we made it back to the base lodge our goggles and Gortex gear was covered with a sheet of ice. We had to go in after each lap to thaw out. I don't mind cold weather because the snow is usually really good, but they need to put a lift or two at the base of Taynton Bowl. It's absolutely ridiculous that you have to ski all the way back to the base lodge in order to catch THREE lifts to the summit ridge so you can boot pack all the way out to Taynton bowl. They need more lifts.
