It's the best. Whenever I get a riff stuck in my head and I can't remember where it's from it always ends up being a Dissection song. The guy was a master songwriter.
In March of 1995, I saw my first death metal show at a little dive bar in Chicago called the Thirsty Whale. It was Dissection, At the Gates, and Morbid Angel! I miss the 90's 😢
Remember the Medusas? I saw the very first tour of Unleashed, Entombed and Sepultura their and many more and the oak theater was another favorite place malevolent creation and Morpheus descends and Deicide fuck those were great days
I saw this tour but at the trocadero transfer in San Francisco. Cool part is years later I met Jon in Sweden when I started living in Norway and was in Sweden on Holiday... We lost a true talent in him
I don't know you but a shout out to those who suggested "Night's Blood", the best song on Dissection's best album, one of the best metal albums ever made. The best for me, if anyone cares.
This is perfect. The whole album is perfect. It blends black, melodic death and thrash metal adding some acoustic parts. This is the way you should put melody into heavy music.
Jon was a musical genius. Every album sounded different, but still sounded like Dissection. This album in particular each song flows right into the next. RIP Jon.
@@AreUHappyNowChatnot big on his views either as I see it as being just as silly as the other side but his passion for it definitely comes out in his music
There were 3 albums that changed the game for me when it came to metal, Storm of the Light's Bane, Emperor's Nightside Eclipse and At The Gates Slaughter of the Soul. Those albums just completely changed everything I knew I wanted from metal: speed, melody and atmosphere.
Storm of the Lights Bane is not only one of the greatest metal albums ever but its also one of the greatest pieces of audio ever recorded in my opinion. Ive never tired of this album but I shelved it for about 15 years at one point just to give it a rest and listen to other things. I listened to it so much in the late 90s and early 2000s that it almost became an addiction. I needed to take a break and see how I felt about it after a long absence. During that time I had a more intimate relationship with the Somberlain. The Somberlain is as good and at times my favorite and also the greatest thing Dan Swano has ever recorded. Reinkaos is much better than people give it credit for. Dark Mother Divine is a perfect song and the whole album is a rarity in that you can understand every lyric even though its an extreme vocal. I believe Jon knew he was going to take his life even when still in prison and he wanted to create a more commercial album with Reinkaos that would get a wider audience and create some chaos and drama. to leave a legacy a few short years later when he sat in his apartment and took his final journey. Rest in Piece Jon Nödtveidt 1975 t0 2006. side note, How many bands create an entire side genre? Dark Fortress and Watain to name a few carry this mighty Dissection torch. Dark Fortress especially deserves more credit,Watain seems to get more notoriety but I think Dark Fortress is super slept on.
Can we take some time and acknowledge the great work Dan Swanö did as a producer with "The Somberlain" and "Storm of the Light's Bane"? He was in many works in some bands that are important today, whether collaborating on vocals or instruments as Producer, Engineering, Mixing and Mastering. Simply a metal legend.
I saw their last performance in Hovet, Stockholm, having waited 10 years for them to start performing again. They used to consider themselves as "Blackened melodic death metal", having first started in Strömstad, Sweden which is located between Oslo and Gothenburg so you get a bit of Norwegian black metal and a bit of Gothenburg melodic death metal. If you lookup "Thunder (1987) - Jon Nödtveidt (Dissection) first recordings", you'll get to hear what Jon sounded like 6 or so years before their first album (The Somberlain). Night's Blood is great but Soulreaper (from the same album) is my favorite track, highly recommend it.
First two Dissection albums are great. Vinterland, Sacramentum and Dawn are similar bands worth checking out, also Swedish and from the same era. Vinterland only put out one album in their career which is a shame.
I would also add The Moaning, Gates of Ishtar and Unanimated as well. All of them are great Swedish melodic black/death metal bands that ever came to be.
Rest in chaos Jon 🖤⚰️🪦🤘 I flew over crystal ground My existence numb Over orchards of grievance, Sorrow and tears This beautiful silence... Calls me now Black fog devours me but I can see it all The monument of my past, The land of seven horizons' before my eyes !!! I reach the land of spiritual rest!!!
The Somberlain and Storm of the Light’s Bane are just perfect melodic blackened death metal albums. Reinkaos.. I dunno, I kind of hate it. To me it sounds like Jon tried to do an In Flames album or something.
i always felt if Jon \Dissection could have done a follow up release after Reinkaos, it wouldv been more in the earlier style, he needed time to get back into the groove of things after his prison time
Reinkaos only sounds like in flames to idiots who have no understanding of music or have no frame of musical reference beyond the 90s. Thats also the reason why Jon made it the way Reinkaos is. To piss of the typical moronic black/death metal fanboys who tought he was gonna dance to their pipe. Reinkaos is just as perfect as the first two but within a whole other field of metal. But to a moronic Black/death metal who only listen to stuff realesed during and after the 90s it might sound more like In Flames than what it actually sounds and were inspired by
Reinkaos is one of the best swedish albums ever! The production is flawless and the theme and concept behind the album is deeply religious and rooted in chaos gnosticism, something Jon explored more in prison. The album is FILLED with hints about his coming "departure", and its basically a letter from him going out on his own terms, like a true satanist would (i guess). It might not sound like a classic Dissection album, but it has the darkest meaning by far and it still slaps the shit out of me with every song. When you know the story behind the album, it hits different. RIC Jon Nödtveidt
You all know that In Flames and At The Gates are from Gothenburg? And Dissection was from Strömstad (1,5hours away). They even played gigs together in the 90s
One of my favorite songs and albums of all time, and just one of the greatest musicians-artists that ever walked this earth. And yes! You should definitely do a deep dive of all their discography. 3 albums; 3 masterpieces in the history of music! R.I.C. Jon Nödtveidt!
Both The Somberlain and Storm of the Light's Bane are two of the best metal albums I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. The riff that you mention being obsessed with @7:50 is another personal favorite of mine that pops into my head all of the time.
I love Reignkaos. Not as hard as the first two albums but might have some of the most well structured songs they’ve created. Black Dragon and Starless Aeon are masterpieces
Reinkaos is a masterpiece in a very different way to the first two but yeah agreed those two tracks are some of the greatest satanic metal to ever be written
UA-cam recommendation,... What an exciting discovery! (I'm a HUGE Dissection fan) The first 2 albums are considered Melodic Black and the 3rd is considered Melodic Death. I HIGHLY recommend watching their 2006 Live Performance video. A deep dive in to ANY of their albums would do great. They are one of the few bands I could say that do NOT have a weak song. Everything they have to offer is a delight!
Dissection is such a great band! Where Dead Angels Lie is something else to check out. Jon made great music and I think we missed out on alot of greatness when he killed him self...

I put Jon right up there with James Hetfield ,Jeff Hanneman, Chuck Schuldiner, Trey Azagthoth. One of the ALL TIME great Riffwriters/Songwriters in Metal! 🔥
I've always preferred "the somberlain" record. But as of late, I've been team "reinkaos" all the way. People call it a melodeath album. Which idk, I guess. But it just feels like Jon really meant the lyrics. I don't think he gave a shit about the fantasy, cold, classic black metal lyrics. But his particular brand of Satanism? Well, he lived, was imprisoned, and died by it. One of the few I believe.
DISSECTION we’re def leading that evolution of The melodic black/death metal assault, but Jon was a genius indeed, first 2 albums were just amazing, ‘The Somberlain’ is just as amazing !!! Check out Black Horizons !!
When I first heard this song back when it came out I couldn't believe what I was hearing. In my own mind this took the black metal sound that I had been hearing and put it into a complex song structure. To me this was the total package. I was in a band in college we tried to incorporate this bands sound into our own. BTW getting ahold of these albums in 1992-1995 was very hard compared to now.
Beautiful isn't it? Soul Reaper on that album might be even better. This was a very cool reaction. People disagree all the time about how to classify Dissection -- as you mentioned, Jon himself was apparently very intentional in transcending the boundaries of genre. Though this album and the one before it have an undeniable black metal feel and "atmosphere." Unfortunately, by all accounts Jon was a pretty bad person who did some terrible things. But he was undoubtedly a musical genius, whatever else he was. One of my favorite bands, & I think any serious Dissection fan has to confront that personal conflict at some point. Great video👌
i know its a year ago but have you done any research on who jon actually was? you think the song blew your mind? wait till you know their and mainly his story

I still think that's probably the best metal album of all time

Try Vinterland's "Welcome My Last Chapter" if you're not already familiar with it. If you're a fan of Dissection you won't be disappointed.

Their official YT has a remastered high quality Rebirth of Dissection live show and its one of the best uploads on the internet.
Where Dead Angel's Lie is always going to be the best introduction to this band IMO. Then you can throw in Night's Blood and Unhallowed after that.
