What other black metal artists should we show Judson?
Emperor
Shining (Sweden)
Ungfell
And because Dissection pioneered Black- Death Metal, some more from the blackened Death Genre,
Behemoth
Sulphur Aeon
Außerwelt
Have you showed him Borknagar yet? I think they're a great incremental step between this style from dissection and slightly more extreme-elements but still pretty melodic style of Borknagar and their many, super talented singers.
However the big caveat on Borknagar is that they seem to be preeetty happy about blocking reactions so I'd understand if you can't really get any of those songs as reactions for the channel.
Burzum would be nice. I suggest 'Jesus' tod' and 'My journey to the stars'
Also Ihsahn, something from "After", with Jorgen Munkepy on sax :)
@@dimitriid We haven’t yet, but we’ll try it. I didn’t know they were known for blocking videos. That’s interesting
"Thorns of crimson death" it's a great song, too.
Might be my favorite of theirs
For a long time Where Dead Angles Lie was my favorite, but over the last few years I've come to prefer Thorns of Crimson Death a bit more.
Black Horizons is their best song, but that one is phenomenal too.
Nothing beats Soulreaper if we're talking Dissection
First song I heard by them
Mgla - Age of Excuse I
Immortal - Beyond the north waves
Batushka - Yekteniya 4
Next classic masterpieces.
Emperor - With Strength I Burn
Dimmu Borgir - Mourning Palace
Satyricon - Mother North
Immortal - Withstand The Fall of Time
Ancient - Willowthewisp
Negator - Regnvm Spiritvs Immvndi
Dark Funeral - Ravenna strigoi mortii
Emperor for sure! Ishan still plays very fast complex off-beat music, while still black mental.
And yes GRIMA - review Enisey - Gone through hell to get their original CD! One of my fav bands.
Poser BM lmao
Marduk - Materialized in Stone
Judas Iscariot - Before a Circle of Darkness
Throne of Ahaz - Northern Thrones
Vinterland - Still the Night Is Awake
and much more :D
I would've preferred King Antichrist from Dark Funeral, but something from Vobiscum is good, too.
Come on, guys! The album ends with a solo PIANO piece, and you're not going to play it (pr even mention it) to the pianist?! Missed opportunity, s'all I'm saying!
The song is called No Dreams Breed in Breathless Sleep.
Something to remember is Jon is playing guitar and doing vocals at the same time. Live he was perfect. Check out the Rebirth of Dissection concert.
That was awesome. Too bad a concert like it will never be played again.
That was awesome. Too bad a concert like it will never be played again.
Ayooo finally some black metal. Dissection is peak, especially this album. Hoping to see some Bathory in the future ^^
Dissection is not black metal .Dissection is Dissection . The best extreme metal band ever and forever .
@@naturalianossDissection is clearly melodic black metal.
@@kingofheavymetalNah this particular album borders between death metal and black metal.
@@KHETTIUS and you border between stupidity and retardation
The band never classified themselves as black metal. I always considered them to be on the edge between (melodic?) black and melodic death metal.
Where dead angels lie is basically a pop song tho by black metal standards.
Dissection has some great songs! My favorites are "Black Dragon" and "God Of Forbidden Light" 😍
Try the Somberlain
Love this black metal folk waltz song :)
Fukk! Thats why! How could i didnt get it?! 😐
@@goaterrorritualust7270 there is actually pretty decent amount of metal songs in 3/4 or 6/8 :) God of forbidden light goes from 4/4 in intro into this feel also
I never listened to Dissection before.
They remind me of very old Opeth.
God Damn they are good.
Thanks for the introduction of Dissection.
Top tier band bro!!
unfortunately a bunch of nazis though
@@faultier3215 I was watching a video of their last live set on YT after watching this video and I saw the guitarist shirt, kinda looked nazi-ish. I'll research the band a little more. But that would be a shame, this is true. nazis=not good.
@@lawrencefine5020 nazis = not good, some nazi bands music = good, politic and art is not the same thing
@@faultier3215 okay buddy..
Burzum - Dunkelheit or Ea, Lord of the depths
Jesus dod
grazhdanskaya oborona - russkoe pole experimentov
Saw them live on this tour with Morbid Angel and At the Gates. Amazing performances, caught 2 shows, met Jon and Johan. Still have my LS tour shirt. Amazing times
As a Pearl Jam and a Dissection fan, thanks for this was a great review!
The main song structure is in 6/8 which is typical for valsas (waltz) this is one of the main reasons why this song sounds so classically inspired to me, Jon, always came off to me as one of the most musically gifted song writers of the late 80s and early 90s extreme music scene, the sweeping melodies, almost baroque chord progressions he naturally gravitated to and his almost neo-classic sensibilities always made me think that he was heavily inspired by classical music, now I'm not sure if that was the case in reality but just from enjoying his body of work that's what I always imagined!
He wasnt inspired by nothing he was just genius .People find it hard to accept it thats why people find all sort of explanations .
@@naturalianoss
Everyone is inspired by something otherwise there's no need to create in the first place.
6/8 is pretty common in many music genres. Loads of bands use it. It’s not unique to any sub genre. Cool poly rhythm dancey feel with that underlying 4/4 pulse underneath.
There’s that neat cool 5/8 and 6/8 switch section they add where the first measure is cut by a beat that’s a nice touch change up that not often mentioned at 10:25 in this video
@@naturalianossa statement born of great ignorance.
There's several piano versions of "where dead angels lie" he would enjoy 🤘
Cradle of Filth - Heaven Torn Asunder. The entire Dusk... and Her Embrace is an atmospheric Black Metal masterpiece.
It's good that we started with black metal on the channel, Emperor; Any song from the nightside eclipse would be incredible, MGLA is one of my favorites not only for its melodies but also for its lyrics
Mgla sucks ass big time . They are an emo band with black metal sound
Nights Blood is my favorite Dissection song, really hope he shows him!
I would really like to see you guys trying out Agalloch!
Emo music for weak people
@@naturalianossalright tough guy, what makes you better than people listening to Aggaloch?
@@Celatra everything .speed ,power, precision and stamina .I have good stand up game and grappling .Never said I am tough but it is known ! Dissection for life !
Emperor - The Acclamation of bonds
Another incredible band you've introduced me to. And what a backstory. Keep being you gents 💚🤙
Love this song, and Bodom After Midnights cover of it as well. So good.
The storm of the lights bane album for me is a 10/10 all killer / no filler kind of album. I consider it one of the best metal albums of all time
Naglfar's sheol album, batushka, old man's child, emperor, burzum, dark funeral are all good options to check out
It is indeed one of the best metal albums of the 90s. Musically was ahead of what most bands of that style were doing at the time.
Y'all be careful and don't go sleepin on Naglfar now!
"No Code" is a great Pearl Jam album I agree. I like your take on "Smile".
Dissection is a good one to slowly move towards more Black Metal. Borknagar released a new album Friday. They are Norwegian as well and have been around 30 years. This new album "Fall" is worth checking out! Cheers guys.
Love this song, listened to it thousands of times…
such a great band. Storm of the Lights Bane and The Somberlain are two of my favourite Metal albums ever
Ulver - A Fearful Symmetry
Can’t wait to hear Jenson original compositions after his voyage through the realms of metal
This was really cool, looking forward to more songs being covered
Best start ever for a noobie on Black Metal cenário.
Keep showing him dissection songs... im sure he will enjoy it.
Next something dissonant, for example Deathspell Omega - Abscission :)
Its great to see all the Emperor love in the comments! I would love to see that as well.
THANK YOU, somehow while watching it I got inspired to grab my guitar and maybe play Gorgoroth Sorg, but as always I started comming with my own riffs and just wrote my second full song ever. Pretty rich in riffs and changes too. Thank you :)
Absolute MASTERPIECE.
One of my absolute favourite songs from my favourite album from my favourite band.
not exaclty a song to overwhelm your musician mate. This song i love and i thank you for doing this!
Holy shit, another blast from the past, I grew up on this album on my teenage years, was one of my favorite albums at the time.
I would say its deathish black metal, so not pure black metal :)
I think it was a good choice to start with Where Dead Angel Lie, it's way more digestible like you said.
Great review. :)
Can't wait for Night's Blood (or Soulreaper :P )
You should do Norwegian band Thorns. Snorre Ruch was the main influence for the 90's black metal. You can hear his influence in almost every band that came out of Scandinavia at that time. You can hear his riffs in Dissection,Mayhem,Burzum and so on.
looking forward to more black metal. i think judson might enjoy it
Another interesting black metal song for a composer is: The loss and curse of reverence by Emperor. Also Inno a Satana has a great structure.
Do the Edge of Sanity - Crimson. Could be a split into series.
Favourite album by Pearl Jam...and i thought i was the only one!!! You should release that take on SMILE. Incredible rendition.
Storm of the light's bane is such a great album! I've listened to it so many times 🙂 Good choice!
Thank you for playing my favorite band, you made my day
Another Great video guys 👌
This is one of the best songs ever!!!
It has everyting.
RIP Jon and what could he have done if he was not over the edge...
Iced earth - dantes inferno. Still owe me that one!!
The album has an ending instrumental song played entirely on piano, Judson could probably enjoy it.
Great song and another great review may I suggest some other stuff to review anything from the band testament and of course Hall of the mountain King by Savatage
Abigor "Liberty Rises a Diagonal Flame" could be worth a go.
Thanks !
Enslaved Frost
Now give him something to warm him up! Something he can dance to! Like Archspire!
Hoping you touch on Darkthrone, Marduk, Bathory, Burzum, Behemoth etc in the future :)
IMPALED NAZARENE
Dissection is a classic. Some suggestions:
Vinterland - As I behold the dying sun
Dimmu Borgir - Mourning palace & Spellbound
Sear Bliss - Birth of eternity (hungarian atmospheric black metal)
Talking about black metal it would be great if you guys could do Emperor - With Strength I Burn (studio version) very epic song!
yes, please
Love dissection, specifically that first album has soo many bangers… like somberlain, and black horizon… are so cool 😎
Hi guys been watching the channel for a short time (one week or two) yet, but I'm enjoying it a lot! Good job you guys are really nice 🤘🏻
Here's my suggestion: since Time II is coming out, I would suggest "Sons of Winter and Stars" by Wintersun (🇫🇮 melodeath from Finland) from the album Time I.
I’d say your assessment regarding whatever subgenre Dissection fits is pretty spot on. I know they’re not “true” black metal, but I’d love to hear Judson’s take on Cradle of Filth, particularly something from Vempire, Dusk and Her Embrace, or Cruelty and the Beast, the unholy trinity of albums in their catalog in my opinion.
Great band 🤗
I think the most common theme throughout most black metal is nihilism. My fave black metal band if you have not heard of them is MGLA, there tremolo picking is stunning.
I love MGLA!
Good stuff guys! You should consider showing Judson a piano piece that was composed for a black metal band to be included in an album, for example Ragnarok - Postludium, Obtained Enslavement - O Nocturne or Dissection - No Dreams Breed in Breathless Sleep.
Black Metal: Dark lyrics, distorted guitars, screaming growling vocals basically
The best metal album, by far!
The best music album
I remember when I first gave this a good listen, it was on the way back from Chicago shortly after this came out, I played it for a friend, and it was completely consuming. I have always admired the more melodic elements of this band. This and the Somberlain would be great albums to hear more from. It should also be said that in his particular belief system, they believed that one should exit life while on top. I never cared much for the message, but I can credit someone for living and dying by their ideals.
This song is black metal anthem!👍👍🤘
Anything from the recent Moonlight Sorcery album would be great as an introduction to Black Metal. It‘s pretty unique and virtuoso, musically interesting and accessible.
Yees, good stuff! Quite a good explanation there of black metal. I've always enjoyed or been fascinated by black metal which makes it sound like a stairway down to doom, or hell or something, or a malestorm.
It's like a repeating disharmony spiraling down to, well hell probably. It sounds cool, it affects me with awe just like seeing something dangerous, powerful such as a hurricane or other natural disasters, which can be really fascinating while dangerous.
Death metal is more like an unstoppable train :D
Keep rocking 🤟
Grima - The Moon and its shadows
Mortal world turn to Ice,
This be Goblin paradise!
i have been waiting for a Dissection song, he would make a cover of No Dreams Breed In Breathless Sleep
Classic song from my country! Is black metal big where you come from?
Man, I haven't listened to this album in well over a decade! Not so much because I don't like it, more that I never owned it, but it was a pretty common pick in our jam room relaxing after practicing with some j's, cigarettes and beers.
Really takes me back!
Never noticed it before, but that cabinet to Richard's left is the most black metal peice of furniture ever. As for suggestions, it doesn't look like anyone has mentioned Enslaved. Maybe something from Mardraum, Monumension, or Below the Lights? "Storre Enn Tid", great song!
SHOW HIM WINTERSUN! ---- Cmon! "Winter Madness" is a classic as classic gets, you guys will love it
You must do Watain in the end of the education of Judson!
Arcturus Ad Astra maybe?
there is actually a piano song on this Album (No dreams in breathless sleep)!
kinda too short for a video but would be interesting what he thinks of…
should let him transpose these songs for piano so we can hear his take on it would be awesome
Dissection's songs played on piano and on classical guitar are amazing in my opinion. A lot of black metal is, like MGLA for example.
Should check out Simon Smith here on youtube, he has great acoustic guitar covers of black metal songs.
There's a bunch of good piano versions of black metal too, but I'd be very interested in hearing Judson's interpretations.
I don't know how did I get here, good duo perspective, cult song.
Reinkaos is one of my favorite albums ever! 👌Please check out "Black Dragon" or "Maha Kali" from that album 😍
Burzum - Det Som Engang Var
Burzum - Key To The Gate
Satyricon - Walk The Path Of Sorrow
Gorgoroth - Gorgoroth
Gorgoroth - Incipit Satan
Nargaroth - Sommer
Emperor - With Strength I Burn
Emperor - I Am The Black Wizards
Darkthrone - En Vind Av Sorg
Ulver - Wolf And Fear
Abigor - Eerie Constellation
Immortal - Call Of The Wintermoon
Immortal - Withstand The Fall Of Time
Great Band! I read he actually planned the date and time of his suicide a year or so before. Made a public statement about it and then followed through......he wanted to opt out on his own terms. Crazy. Reinkaos is a great album too.
Man needs to react to immortal's at the heart of winter. Won't be disappointed.
Listened to this album so much as a teen my cd cracked down the middle.
I have that defeated sanity shirt
Black metal is what I listen to most the last few years. But I 100% agree with the idea that it must be your taste within the genre itself. It's very hit or miss with me. I would say black metal is both my favorite and least favorite type of metal.
More BM please.
There are some Piano covers of this song
there is one where the piano is out of tune and it sounds even cooler
Should have him react to something from the very first Wintersun album
Their early material is often referred to as "melodic black metal", some similar-ish bands would include Sacramentum, Dawn, Vinterland, Naglfar, Lord Belial, Old Man's Child...
Guys I'd love to see a reaction to something off their Reinkaos album. Dark Mother Divine or Maha Kali maybe. Give Judson the full experience lol
Procede, Ricardo!
😈 the crooked whispers... When nothingg is left... Lyrics..her skull been hollowed out for years...🤘
Satyricon - Phoenix
Wth, you just keep listening to swedish bands I, as a swedish metalhead, didnt rly know about. :)
Btw, proceed in Swedish is "fortsätt"
@Greatmeasures1 listen to ulver Bergtatt album any song from that album is perfect especially track 3 classical mixed with black metal.
Here are some newer greats (alongside the many other excellent suggestions of classics)
Afsky - Tyende Sang
Drudkh - Furrows of Gods
I hear hints of Opeth in the interlude, also folk metal. Not that it's Black Metal but how about Coroner, out of Switzerland
