German power metal band. Been around since 1984, and still active. Lead singer is Hansi Kursch. A couple older songs here, from the 4th and 2nd albums. Their 12th record came out in 2022. Many of their lyrics are inspired by fantasy authors, like Tolkien. Their 6th album, Nightfall in Middle Earth, is a concept album based on Tolkien's The Silmarillion. "Blood of the Elves" and "Secrets of the American Gods" are a couple from the last album, The God Machine.

I know I'm late, but whenever someone reacts to Blind Guardian and these two songs, I have to watch it - not only for the reaction, but also because I love these two songs very, very much. The Bard's Song even inspired me to the plot of my book (work in progress).
I also wanna add: When it's not at Wacken where there are dozens of bands playing and a tight schedule, but a headline tour, it happens (frequently) that Valhalla is 10 minutes and longer, because the audience just will not stop singing. As someone said in the comments - if you're around Wacken, you can still hear them singing.

7:47 Donna, a bard was a storyteller in the middle ages who told stories by his music and lyrics.
Thousand years ago noone except a very few could read so stories was told with rhyme and music because that way it was easier to remember.
Blind Guardian are pioneers of german speed/power metal, I think they have been around for more than 40 years now.

A couple of things to take away from this:
Firstly, while these singers might stick to a particular manner of singing during most of their songs and one might think that that's all they know, the really great ones are incredibly versatile and there's always that very different song in their repertoire which will surprise you. Most of them took serious vocal lessons. As a vocal coach myself I can just tell that they know what they are doing, and they do it very well.
Secondly, I can't really think of any other cultural phenomenon that is capable to glue together 80 thousand+ people in such a beautiful way, throughout these songs they sang as one in what felt like an almost mystical ritual. Only rock music can do that.

Blind Guardian are, excepting only the mega-super legendary Helloween, THE biggest name on the power metal scene that originated in Germany in the late 80s. (Blind Guardian themselves, for the longest of times, referred to their style as "melodic speed metal", since the term "power metal" didn't get its modern day connotations until the late 90s.) However, unlike Helloween, Blind Guardian initially struggled to grow above cult status, mainly because at the time Helloween literally overshadowed any and all competition on the scene. What resulted in Blind Guardian's rise to glory was, ironically, the 90s alternative and grunge movement that supposedly made all 80s associated musical styles obsolete. In reality, bands who already had a certain reputation and who refused to bow down to the trend, retaining their 80s esthetics, benefited hugely from the demand from despairing 80s nostalgians and the dramatically reduced competition. Bands who rose from relative obscurity to bona fide heavy metal stars during this period included Americans Manowar, Savatage and Iced Earth, Finns Stratovarius, and Germans Rage, Grave Digger - and Blind Guardian.
The two tracks featured here are early Blind Guardian classics. "The bard's song" is from 1992 and a pioneering song in the "acoustic fantasy ballad" department - eventually a very popular type of song in heavy metal circles. "Valhalla" is from 1989, from their second album that ended their earliest and most speed metal oriented era.
Blind Guardian's more recent outputs are somewhat divisive among fans. Many find these more symphonic releases to be cases of style over substance. Still, the band remains a hugely popular and, above all, highly respected institution on the European metal scene. Singer Hansi Kürsch in particular has grown to iconic status. He is also one half of the band's songwriting team, guitarist André Olbrich (the hairier of the two guitarists) being the other half.
It's somewhat mind-boggling to think that in theory, Blind Guardian could have been one of the most heard artists of the new millennium, for a very special reason. Their 1998 album "Nightfall in Middle-Earth", a concept album based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Silmarillion", was so well received that there was for a while a fleeting, but still possibility that they would contribute to the soundtrack of what turned out to be one of the biggest movie successes of our time - the "Lord of the rings" trilogy. Like I said - that IS mind-boggling.

Blind Guardian were formed in (West) Germany in 1984 and championed the European 'power metal' genre of ancient fantasy and sorcery tales, many derived from the works of Tolkien (author of 'Lord of the Rings' ... 'The Hobbit') ... their name Blind Guardian taken from the album 'Awaken the Guardian' by the American band Fates Warning (they changed it in 1988)
The band currently is: Hansi Kursch (lead vocals), Andre Olbrich (lead guitar), Marcus Siepen (rhythm guitar) and Frederik Ehmke (drums)... other members on bass, keyboards... are session players.
Their debut album 'Battalions of Fear' was released in 1988 and was heavily influenced by German band Helloween, who had a hit record in America ("Keeper of the Seven Keys" Pt. 1 & 2)... However, Blind Guardian would not have a record released outside Europe until 1998.
Blind Guardian would focus on a number of albums in Europe only - 'Follow the Blind' (1989) ... 'Tales from the Twilight world' (1990) ... 'Somewhere far beyond' (1992)... In 1995, the band released 'imaginations from the other side' ... which was produced by Flemming Rasmussen, who had worked w/ Metallica... A 'filler' album of covers and unreleased songs 'Forgotten Tales' was released in 1996.
With German record labels Century Media gaining US & worldwide distribution, Blind Guardian was finally able to secure a global release for 'Nightfall in Middle Earth' (1998)... a concept record based on Tolkien's novel "The Simarillion"... It became a fan favorite and gave Blind Guardian a growing fanbase ... In the 2000's, Blind Guardian's past albums were released worldwide and the band was touring outside Europe for the first time as their sound also developed into more symphonic elements and celtic influences.
In 2002, the album 'A night at the Opera' was released and Blind Guardian was back on tour and released a live album and a live DVD 'Imaginations through the looking glass' in 2003... In 2005, original drummer Thomen Stauch was replaced by current drummer Frederik Ehmke and the album 'A twist in the myth' was released in 2006 w/ a full North American tour.
Blind Guardian's career kept getting bigger w/ the subsequent albums - "At the edge of time' (2010)... 'Beyond the Red Mirror' (2015)... and an orchestral album 'Legacy of the Dark Lands' (2019)... In 2022, they released the album 'The God Machine'... and r currently on tour.
Singer Hansi Kursch was also involved in the project Demons & Wizards, which released 3 albums... However, he left the project in 2021 after the guitarist Jon Schaeffer (also of the band Iced Earth) was arrested and charged criminally in the 1/6 Capitol attack and was tied to the insurrectionist group the oath keepers.
Suggestions for Blind Guardian songs - "Into the storm" ... 'Nightfall' ... 'Imaginations from the other side' ... 'Fly' ... 'Mirror Mirror' ... 'Secrets of the American Gods'... 🤘🤘

Before these guy played I saw an exclusive show where Kai Hansen made a special solo show. Back then he was normally fronting his own band Gamma Ray but he celebrated 30 years in heavy metal by doing an exclusive show in Wacken and release an album. The reason I say "back then" is because he is now back in the band where he started 30 years earlier, the other power metal legends from Germany. Helloween, I highly recommend you to check them out.
Because Kai can be funny sometimes he decided to make a joke while I took a sip of my coffee so everytime I watch this video I can feel the coffee in my nose. I never learn my lesson, dont drink between songs.
Oh and Kai sometimes do guest vocals on songs and way back in 1989 he did some vocals on Valhalla.

Well,....Blind Guardian has been here for a while.
Blind Guardian is a German power metal band formed in 1984 in Krefeld, West Germany.
They are often credited as one of the seminal and most influential bands in the power metal and speed metal subgenres. Nine musicians have been a part of the band's line-up in its history, which currently consists of singer Hansi Kürsch, guitarists André Olbrich and Marcus Siepen and, since 2005, drummer Frederik Ehmke.
So,...The Bard's song... medieval is a correct term, forget everything core-related!
In Celtic cultures, a "BARD" is a professional storyteller, verse-maker, music composer, oral historian and genealogist, employed by a patron (such as a monarch or chieftain) to commemorate one or more of the patron's ancestors and to praise the patron's own activities.
This song is about the bard's life... Each day finds them in a new place, where no one knows who they are. All they know is the songs the bards sing and the worlds they are taken to by them. When it's all said and done the bards pack up and moves on, no one to ever know their name, only the stories they brought with them. It's about how they did it all for the music and the stories. And the bard's songs will remain. In my thoughts and in my dreams.
    AND next,... Valhalla !!!
"Valhalla" is Old Norse and it means "halls of the slain". In Norse Mythology it's where Odin and the Valkyries (Floor 😉) lived and where the souls of warriors fallen in battle went. And then at Ragnarök (the end of the world) they all get to fight Jormungandr and Fenrir (Floor's "little" dog is named after this beast of a Wolf 🙃).
Like all of Blind Guardian's other songs, this one is a little cryptic. The basic idea is obvious but because they lyrics don't use many names and they describe nothing except for feelings and atmosphere.
    NWSU/FloorFan/Metalhead 🤘😎🤘

The Bards Song grabs the mood of Tolkiens Lord Of The Rings and the stories wich were told by bards. And this is inspired by medieval motives and music. Because in this time the bards were the people wich were spreading the news and spreading fairytales. Something what modern music has lost. But Blind Guardian are following this tradition and telling stories written by Tolkien and Stephen King and other Writers. So enjoy their tales and have a good time with fantasy and horror stories.

So this is again Wacken 80,000 people and a very popular German band. Imagine writing a song or even more than one and everyone is not letting you sing or off stage afterwards because they keep singing. Dream of many artists I guess.

And there we have the reason for the UA-cam channel, finding mom a man..... *lol* love these little talks in between when it shows that you're like real people and stuff :)
Also, welcome to German power metal :D
For the spoken parts in between (Since it's mostly in German):
First part: I would also like to let you scream longer, unfortunately, we only have a little time left. Of course, we want to spend it with music. I think most of you will know what comes next. It has already been legendary here (in Wacken) one or the other time. I have the feeling that you will "put the crown on" this time. (German phrase for: it will be even better). Let`s sing: the bards song!
Second: You are fucking crazy.... Wacken! I dare not say it: You are even more awesome than usual! We had a great time up here. We always liked to come to Wacken. At some point, it's time to move on. The time has come now. See you somewhere!
Looks awesome, sounds awesome!!! I think Magnus has worked enough, we can now bring in Frederik into the game, but for that you have to sing even LOUDER!!!
    Give me all you have!!!!
    The last three.
    Sing us off the stage!!!!

Oh wow :D Love that you stumbled across that small german Band. Wacken has some great bands unknown in the US like you saw with the NIghtwish Songs. Its a great festival. Best regards from Germany PS: Do you remember the burning Bulls horns left top of the stage from the Nightwish Stage on that same festival then comment with a "Wacken" ;) PSS: The bards song especially has this great message. Someone passes away and the bards will remember that person in theier songs and the song will carry the memory so the bards songs will remain after you or someone you loved or a family member passed. The bards remember and sing their hymn. The bards back in the day sung songs about peoples emories. Robyn Hood would be a great example. If it happend the way it did the bards would remember him in theier songs so the bard songs remains after you passed. Bards songs can also be memories you have in your head and remember with your parents or grandparents, but the bards will sing and their songs will remain. First time at the state fairy with your grandparents? Thats a bards song if you taste the popcorn, smell the rain and whatever comes to mind thinking about it

Blind Guardian did a theme song for a German produced computer game called "Sacred 2", and even featured in the game, with a quest that gave you the band's instruments as quest rewards.
Here's the band IN the game's "concert" cutscene.

Blind Guardian are great story tellers of fantasy and myths. They have one album (Nightfall in Middle Earth) that is entirely About J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion.
