"I'm not exactly a Doctor. I signed up for community College and couldn't find parking so I left." I enjoyed that way more than I probably should lol. Love your stuff man keep it coming!
Best comment, talented and funny
That literally earned my sub 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I can only imagine if you’d found a parking space that day. You’d be showing us surgeries using Makita tools!
Amputations with the Bosch nano-chainsaw.
@@charliebrown303 yikes!
I’m not a doc but I can show you some. Don’t tell anyone where your going and come on over… anyone else love plastic sheeting?
I like the smoothness of the cut, but I can't get my head around that laser.... I amputated 3 wrong limbs this week alone. Gotta have that shadow line man.
Shadow line is the best , blade thickness change and no adjustment needed, no brainer. Perfect cuts.
Love your dry sense of humor. It’s killer. Keep the videos coming. Continue to shake up the content.
Shadow line for the win! I had the same issues with the stock laser on my Dewalt 12" scms years ago. It didn't matter what I did it would not stay calibrated. When I ran across the upgraded led shadow line replacement module, I swapped the laser out and haven't looked back. Dead on accurate.
The shadow line is superior in my opinion specifically because it's always referenced off of the blade. The laser is not. The laser is 100% independent from your blade, leaving space for error. In your line of work, precision is key.
I love that you're so detail oriented that you go above and beyond on window trim in your garage thats also your shop. I know for a fact I wouldn't go through that trouble in the garage and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.
Ashley and I don’t really like what I create and do for a living, so we’re opting for a off-the-wall funky look. NICE.
I really admired all your work. Since I started watching your videos, I learned a lot and currently i am now installing crown moldings around my area using all your techniques and all of my clients love it. There’s no enough word to say but just thank you so much...
FWIW.. things I learned spraying trim for 1st time.
1). Mask up on to ceiling as shown in this video. Spray bounces up wall higher than you expect.
2). Mask wider than you think.
3). Don't leave painters tape on surfaces for too long. For reasons beyond my control I had to leave tape on for about a month. When I pulled tape, it removed paint and in some cases even tore the drywall paper. Had to scrape all damaged areas, seal torn paper, float the damaged areas, and prime the floated areas with PVA primer. Now putting finish color back on walls - and had to mask baseboards for all of the above.
I'm surprised you use any of those lines, I never feel confident until I bring the blade down without power to touch my cut line
Try the shadow line. The shadow is the kerf.
Looks fantastic. FYI, I'm a bog fan of that gritty Orange Goop for cleaning hands. I try to keep a gallon of it around at all times.
Used to wash our hands and parts with a 50/50 mix of gasoline and diesel fuel as a teen. Wouldn't do it today but on the farm we never thought anything of it...oh to live in the 1970's. Then use Zest and water to washup before supper.
Love the shadow line so much more. I used my Ryobi for 10+years and bought a 12” DeWalt and the baby 20v after watching your Kapex video…now I wish I had the Makita ohhh well can’t chase that rabbit lol
Apply the dark base color, let it dry, then rub a candle on the areas you want to look distressed, apply your finish coat. Once it dries, take a stick and run it on the area you applied the wax candle -' and whala a beautiful distressed look
That masking job is on a whole ‘nother level.
A nother level? 10 4 little buddy. Lol
I'm a huge Makita user, many years as a carpenter. I've had my 10" Miter saw with laser for many years, love the saw and use to like the laser until others came out with the shadow line. First time I got to demo a saw with the shadow line I was blown away. I've been waiting for Makita to jump on the shadow line band wagon for a long time.
That’s the ONLY thing that’s kept me from buying a teal saw!!! I can’t go back to a laser after using dewalt and Milwaukee shadow lines
Gsl line has it. That’s the 40 volts.
@@nathangardner772 no kidding? My wife is requesting your address, she would like to send you a copy of my credit card bill for invoicing 😂
@@nathangardner772 *xgt lineup, in case anyone was confused
I'm the same way with the laser. I bought a Makita miter saw about 12 years ago. It seemed I could never get these calibrated, but on my say I could turn it off. Still using it to this day with no laser.
I didn’t know “shadow line”’was a thing and it looks very accurate. I have tools with “laser line” and don’t use that feature for the same reasons as you. Glad Makita has released a shadow line model. Cheers 👍😎🇦🇺
Yeah, shadow line miter guide is king.
I usually put electrical tape over the laser so I can see the pencil mark because the lasers are terrible.
He wasn't kidding that window frame, including the color, is gorgeous !
Richard, I have the 10 in version of the Makita saw (for about 2 yrs). Eventually the swivel, will become difficult turn left and right. When this happens here is how to fix it: There is a center bolt underneath the blue inserts on the cutting bed, remove the inserts and SLIGHTLY loosen the bolts. Loosen until it swings nicely then put the inserts back on and your good.
Shadow line. Always accurate no matter what blade you stick in the saw.
I’m a Ridgid user…they used to use the laser and it was ok, (it constantly needed to be recalibrated), but they’ve switched to the shadow line. I’m so happy they changed! Keep up the good work. I’m so happy for you and your family. Keep plugging away…look forward to seeing the progress.
Richard - Comedy gold with the OSHA department, & brain damage bit.
I’m in the shadow line camp as well.
With your amazing attention to detail, I’m looking forward to seeing your door build, & whatever else you design.
Cheers from the PNW.
Never new your a Marine until today. I like your channel even more now lol. My son is a marine too, Semper FI.
You should get finish carpentry tv in the makita font for your window instead of the Mikita emblem!
Simper Fi Richard-thank you for your service to you and all veterans on this Veterans Day. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I think it’s the fact that the led lights up the workpiece, as well. Makes seeing your mark nice and bright, especially with older eyes like mine.
Semper Fi, love that you're experimenting and trying different things. It gives me ideas and things to try, now if I only had your patience and skills..
So jealous of that shop ! Space like that doesn't come cheap here in the UK 🇬🇧
Makita also makes an 8.5” 40v miter saw for when the full 12” is too much.
My dream saw, it looks so good. Lugging a big 12 inch saw around twice a day takes it's toll.
@@Davey768 Yeah, hopefully it isn't a boat anchor, too!
@@mchilly Far as I've seen, it's pretty light and handy. Price is a bit steep atm for me though, haven't gotten into the 40v yet, but this saw could make me do it.
Been watching you for years... first time I've heard you say that you were in the Marine Corps. Honestly, not surprised. I like you even more now! Haha!
Why, you think you're better than us?
I've caught it a couple of times and some of the phrasing of words gives him away.
From one vet to another vet, happy Veterans Day (this Thursday) and thanks for serving our country.
You would love my kitchen. My cabinets are custom built shaker style with a similar shade of teal. They are glazed and distressed. White and black granite with a solid walnut high bar. Getting ready to do the backsplash with antique copper.
I made a comment on your other video that the only thing preventing me from buying this saw is the lack of a corded adapter. The lack of a shadow line in another. Really hope makita makes some revisions to this tool.
The window turned out great. When distressing windows, furniture etc keep this in mind…imagine where the item will naturally get the most wear and distress those areas. This will make the distressing look the most realistic.
Same here, just bought the Makita 12" (have been using the Dewalt DWS780) and have to agree with everything you say. Man, I miss that shadow line, once you have used the shadow line, any laser is just not in the same league. I am just going to have to live with it for the moment, but once the new makita with the shadow line is available in the UK, I will be getting that. Thanks for the video
it's a good update to a 40v line....you will only need one battery and some of their other tools are great 👍
I'm waiting for the 40v brad nailer to be released in the US. It's the only thing I need to go completely Makita cordless, the 18v 18ga is pretty bad and I don't need 16ga.
Love that you're making the house your way. It's fun to make things how you want them
The weathered look works better if you use a black gel stain instead of black spray paint. The reason being that the gel stain gets down into the wood, so when you lightly sand off the edges to reveal the weathered look, you aren't left with bare wood (because the black spray paint sands off just as easily as your blue topcoat).
I had problems at new with the 10" Makita laser compound cut chop saw. That laser was adjustable for either side of the kerf but you had to be on your toes to sight the thing exactly where you needed the cut. I sold the saw later. The I read that Festool and their chop $$$ has a few problems. I have a Festool vac and being wet or dry has saved me several times-good. Otherwise it has been Bosch for drills and saber saws for 35 years. Bosch had blades that no other company offers.
Even on my cheap skil 10” miter saw the shadow line is spot on, and that’s the point it always will be as it’s a shadow cast from the blade. The only time it can be an issue is in super bright sun, but then laser can struggle there to. I think some people dislike shadow because you may have to bring the blade down a bit.
Too*
Yeah, I was wondering why you went with a 2 battery 36v vs a 1 battery 40v. Those 40v makitas seem to be pretty impressive.
Shadow line 💯 Laser is fine for rough carpentry but the shadow line is far more precise.
I just found out your a Marine…I knew there was a reason I liked your channel…lol. Happy 246 birthday brother
Spends $1150 on a miter saw not even researching the other possibility’s from the same company. I envy you lol but no I’m still gonna say for a shop saw get corded. You’ve got your cordless dewalts so why go cordless for a shop saw??? I would highly recommend reconsidering. P.s makitas 40v system is still 36v just with a single battery. It’s like dewalts 60v system is really only 56v and their 20v is only 18v
Yeah I don’t get it either
We do a lot of distress finishing usually brushed on. Satin over the flat base will give you a nice smooth finish that probably won’t need a clear coat If your top coat is flat you may want clear coat on it. Sometimes I’ll use a wax candle and rub it lightly over the base coat and that will make it distress easier and leaves some cool texture. The window looked really cool with the distressed teal. I’m going to check out those pads you used on that window.
Semper Fi, Mac. I used to be stationed in your neck of the woods, Carswell JRB, Naval Air station. MWSS 471 then 473 later on. Happy upcoming Veterans Day, boss.👍👍
We have a guy at work that washes his hands and forearms with straight MEK every single day. He's been doing it for probably 15 years. A bit out there...but he seems to be ok.
Until he experiences organ failure. Nobody is invincible.
Yup - and I know a printer who did the same thing, washed up daily w MEK for 20yrs, and developed a chemical sensitivity so bad he had to retire at 40, and his last 20 yrs were a living hell spent on disability. It was one thing after another, endocrine disorders, ending with kidney failure that put him on dialysis and the transplant list… but never got there because he died of liver cancer at age 59.
DON’T touch or breathe chemicals that absorb via you skin or mucus membranes. Very bad idea.
I often spray brake cleaner on my hands to clean grease, paint, etc. off them. Is this dangerous to my health?
@@JT_70 Yes - the brake cleaner chemicals leech into your skin over time and cause damage to your internal organs and nervous system. It's 100% dangerous.

My 12" DeWalt has no shadow line or laser. My 10" Milwaukee has a shadow line that you can't see in daylight anyway, my first ever miter saw was a Makita 10" slider with a laser. The batteries wore out on it and I never replaced them. I've been working almost 20 years without a laser or shadow line, work still turns out great, not hard to line up by eye.
You remind me of my friend Vince. We were a excellent team. U do excellent work. Keep it up I just ordered ur glue. I’m excited to try it. I’m always wanting to use best products.
Bro that is so cool, I used makita's back in late 70' - 80's till they grew legs and walked off, I do love the Bosch line of tools, the surgeon I think is their cordless saw and a lot of reviews say it has one of the best dust collections, I just recently upgraded to the Metabo 12 inch with zero back clearance, why weren't they doing that years ago lol love your videos and content, thanks for your service in the Marines, my son recently discharged from the Corp, this video I realized I wasn't a subscriber after all this time lol totally my bad so that's corrected now. Looking forward to more videos and content.
How do you like the Metabo miter? and how does it compare to what you had before? I was on the verge of getting the 10" Makita until I saw the laser/shadow comparison and read the comments...
@@benjaminlee5647 I like it a lot, little pricey for me, I kept missing the sales so I pulled the trigger and got it, just under $500, but it seems pretty well made, I've had several before it, Hercules, Bauer 10 and 12 inch, the worst had to be the Bauer 12 inch slider, first one had to take it back and the second one wasn't much better that's when I found the Metabo HPT 12 inch slider, zero rear clearance really sold me on it because my work area is my living room space of a pretty small apartment
Used laser forever, picked up a Dewalt DHS790 with the cutline and will never go back. The cutline assit is a joy to use over the lasers
Matt on 731 woodworks has some videos where he distresses wood if anyone wanted another perspective on how to do this. I think he’s a fan of yours too.
Dude it took me several times using a laser on my Kobalt saw ti get used to it but, once I did, I was so glad I didn't give up. The industry does a poor job of educating the user who isn't used to laser that it is an acquired taste.
I used to be an industrial painter, I used to wash my hands every day with Lacquer thinner, not a good idea...
Years later like 10 years after I was a painter, I was out to dinner with an old friend, he had no idea I was a painter, that night during dinner he said something that shocked me, he said, you use to be a painter and used Lacqure thinner a lot, at first I said no why? and then I remembered, 10 years prior I was a painter, anyway he said to me, I can see it in your eyes, your body is full of it. I was like WOW wth...
So my point is, I think this stuff stays in your body indefinitely and yes, the skin is the largest organ of the human body and it adsorbs everything it comes in contact with so be wise out their
I agree with you. The shadow line is the way to go.
I have a 12 inch makita, which is corded that I almost never use. In my van I have the 7-1/2 inch x2 which is a single bevel and the new gsl02. I put both of them on one stand and set them once. It’s nice because I’m not flipping bevels all day. Ideally I’d have 4 saws running all at the same height so you can just slide 16 footers between them. In a situation with a house with bullnose corners you could theoretically set each saw one time and have lefts and rights for 22s and 45s.
this is genius
For years I have ignored lasers or shadow lines as gimmicks. I move the blade down to the level of the piece I am about to cut. I move my line up to the carbide tooth leaning towards my line with the blade of course on the waste side. I then hold the piece firm and raise the blade and make the cut.
Bingo!
yup
I have the Festool Kapex and it uses the lazor , and I love it because it has the double line lazor , one line on each side of the blade. I find it very accurate and so I never have used the shadow line ones. The makita saw I want has the shadow line, not sure if I am going to like it or hate it. I have heard its hard to see in the sun light.
My man!! First thing to remodel in the new casa is the garage!! Enjoy your new house bud!!
Makita is by far my favorite color theme. The black set too. And dewalt is my least even though I own many. Gonna paint my flexvolt miter this color now lol
Opposite for me. Black and yellow just means construction to me. Makita blue and especially the Ryobi green are just weird color schemes. For some reason it just doesn’t look professional to me. Even though I know DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Makita are the top three professional grade brands
@@christophercrawford2736 no soup for you...lol totally joking. I feel like some of the newer and flexvolt tools have more black or the dark grey like on the flexvolt miter. I really like it and wish they would move forward with that and the yellow at the lesser accent color. I use a black artist marker to trace the molding lines in my dewalt tools, it looks pretty sweet. Instead of the ol spray paint to identify your tools from others on the job.
@@FreeLander5280 same. I much prefer the Dewalt stuff that’s primarily black with hints of yellow. I especially like the Flexvolt because it’s mostly gray with hints of yellow black and red. I think the yellow looked ugly when it’s brand new but as it ages and gets weather and 30, I think it looks pretty good.
@@christophercrawford2736 I hope dewalts listening!lol
Personally I like the yellow because it’s high vis. Easier to see / find the tools. Lol
Never liked laser saws. Was a big fan of the shadow line for a long time , but now I’ve gone back to blade blur and find I’m more accurate especially taking 1/32” precision cuts.
I have this saw, and yes, I don't even bother with the laser. Shadow line is clear winner.
That was a great idea Rich for the color. I too prefer the shadow line. I just got hip to it purchasing a Bauer 12" sliding dual compound miter w/shadowline. I never knew about it but the saw was the best for what I wanted to spend & cuts totally true.
Great vid 😎🇺🇸💪
I just found out the other day that Makita is "made in America" for the most part. The main factory is in Buford, Ga.
Will buy makita more!
it's funny like that. with cars, i think foreign brands like toyota and subaru are made more in america than ford or chevy these days. so what you are saying isn't necessarily surprising, good to know
idk about that, I just bought an bunch of Makita stuff and was disappointed with the amount of "Made in China" stickers on most of it
It's awesome seeing you set up a shop it will be a game changer for you. You should build a miter table on that wall :)
Been a carpenter for 20 years, never once used a laser or shadow line on a miter saw. I consider those to be home owner training wheels.
You need to work a few jobs with the shadow line style saw, my bet says you change your tune.
They give you a good reference point when creeping up on cuts. You got to get used to them though.
Greg Schoolland I agree.
I'm waiting to see what you do with the ports on the front of the Harvey dust collector. They seem to stick right out in the way in a shop space that's already going to be pretty confined.
What is the real issue with the laser? I can't tell. Only thing I can gather from the video is that it isn't "vibrant" enough like the shadow. Is accuracy or thickness (somehow) the issue? Not that I'm ever planning on spending $1100 on a saw, but.
Same. Wasn’t quite certain exactly what he was saying except maybe that it just wasn’t quite vibrant enough. I don’t think he was trying to imply this in the video, but I think it’s a well-known fact that lasers need calibration whereas a shadow line will never require a calibration. It’s just showing where the blade is at.
Making progress is sticking with what you know, Dewalt personally is my go to for the last 22/25 years of doing trim carpentry. Love your channel by the way📞
I have the corded makita, non laser, as they do not sell the l version here, I guess there's a good reason for that, I'm currently adding a cree LED into where the laser would sit for a shadow line, the testing was as good as you dewalt looks, just working out the best option for powering it.
I've been running Makita for a decade and have been wishing for the shadowline for years! I'm glad they are putting it on thee 40V!
I've got the 40v XGT with the shadow line, it's the best mitre saw I've ever used.
That shadow line is so much better!
I can get you that sticker
I upgraded earlier this year and almost went with the Makita but the laser was a deal breaker. I ended up with the Bosch gcm12sd. Fantastic saw but now I don’t have a laser or a shadow line 🤦🏼♂️
Just finished replacing all the Fascia on my house. My Makita compound miter saw (no Laser) and DEWALT heavy duty miter saw stand were life savers. Can't say enough about how nice the Makita is. I wanted to use Mira TEC primed exterior composite (recommended for the Colorado climate) but couldn't find any within 100 miles. Also couldn't find any redwood fascia so I bit my lip and used #2 pine. Picking through a hundred 16 - foot boards to get 30 good ones from three different lumber yards, routing the dado and primer painting them was a pain. And the 1x8 boards are not the same from all manufacturers. Some were 7-1/4 and some were 7 - 3/16. In hindsight, I should have ordered the Mira TEC and had it delivered.
I love my Festool Kapex, I find the thicker kerf festool blades cut straighter when making bevel cuts in hardwoods, I do a lot of mahogany. I used the dewalt saw for a long time, but the kick on start was a pain in the ass. I'm not a big fan of the makita, one of my friends bought that same saw and IDK I wasn't a fan
Had a laser on my 12" Hatach. Tough to chase the laser, but when I set the focus onto the blade, the problem when away. You get a true line when the blade is spinning.
It’s “Makita Blue”. I worked for them for several years
Yeah but "Team Teal" has a ring to it, they should just give in to the industry vernacular!
Doesn’t matter what Makita calls it. It’s teal.
Hoorah, happy b-day Marine!!
Richard, the shadow line is the ticket. Laser is just what you say, very hard to focus on. Makita tools are hands down very good. They have lasted very well for me and I use them every day. Enjoy!!!
I've always worked with laser lines and didn't even know about shadow lines, now that I know of them I need them!
No calculations anymore for the with of your blade.😱
With shadow lines it always shows you the right with of your blade 😍
great job matching that color , if you matched it by eye thats amazing , usually you can remove those lasers if they are not built in
on some saws.
Ah yes, the old "no parking spot college dropout". Tale as old as time😂
If you found a spot you’d know it’s tale.
@@KitchenerLeslie2 yep. Clearly didn’t attend much.
Should look into powder glaze. Elite fine finish has some videos on it.
If it's a shop saw, why get a battery saw instead of a plug in? I think you'll eventually want to get dust extraction for your shop and the plug in enables my Festool vacuum to kick on every time the saw runs. I'm no expert by any means, but I don't know how I'd get that to work with a battery saw. Plus I assume the batteries add a lot of cost to the saw.
I like the 2 laser system on the festool. Shoeing both sides of the blade without lowering it.
I have the 36v Makita but do not use the laser. I've never owned a saw with the shadow line. I'm not sure if I'd trust either, I like to cut my marks by cutting close and then moving to them. I've been doing this for so many years that I'm just used to it at this point.
Haven't you heard, Richard? OSHA rules have been suspended until January 4th and only apply to employers with more than 100 people.
If that is a shop saw why would you buy a cordless ?
I just got the ls1219 and still have to calibrate the laser because yes from factory it’s just a tiny bit off, its not in the middle its also not completely aligned to the right so I noticed having to creep up as well. I do how ever not see shadow or laser being better then the other guess its just a matter of getting used to. We humans are creatures of habit once you used something in a way for many years you get stuck to it and its hard to learn/adjust to something different. I love my saw though its an awesome machine 😎
If you want that cracked look spray the second coat before the first coat dries completely about half dry
I agree ! My Metabo has a laser that I'm assuming is similar to yours. Love the saw. BUT the laser I don't love. It's confusing and I tried to kind of off set but then it only works if your measurements are always coming from the same side. It's frustrating!!!
I can agree with the laser. I have the corded version with the laser and I also have a Milwaukee with the shadow line. I like the shadow line better as well.
Incredible work as always. The distressed look there looks amazing.
Now for an unsolicited opinion... don't brand it, it takes away class, and it's damn classy now. I love the shirts, but on a house, it seems wrong. Unless they pay you. That can be forgiven.
It's a Holiday Inn Express and you gain all that knowledge. I sent you an Email about the planer and stand but I have not received a replay. I am interested if it is still available? I will check video next week.
OK. The community College line is pretty funny. Young man you have more character and talent than a whole bunch of educated people. Me included. Keep up the great content.
with those green thumbs you could launch a finish gardenry tv shirt 4:43
Happy Birthday Marine!!
I've been a finish carpenter for 20 years and never trusted the lasers and never heard of shadow cuts. I've always been a DeWalt saw guy but I learned from old school guy and I kind of work old school. Cut everything on a pencil mark and hand cope everything. To each is own.
In my opinion, lasers can’t be trusted because they need calibration. The shadow line is showing the blade itself so can’t go wrong there. Still best to creep your cuts.
@@christophercrawford2736 I just mark where I'm cutting and cut there. Maybe I'm just old school but that's how I was taught.
@@Risner12300 well of course. But it’s just a matter of lowering the teeth to the board to check where the blade will end up cutting vs having a light shine on the blade to create a line across it. I’ve never tried the shadow line or the laser, but I’m anxious to make the upgrade to my Dewalt saw to add that shadow line functionality. It can be annoying trying to get the teeth on my mark, such as when I only make a tiny little mark next to my where my measuring tape is at and not making a line with my speed square. I could probably just leave a speed square at the saw, but I think the shadow line will work great.
Sight down the blade fellas. Split the line every time
I use the Bosch zero clearance 12". No laser or shadow like but it's a great saw
