(Haha, I am being ironically humorous)
I agree with your point here. I have experienced a couple scams here, but you are right it is not as huge of a deal as people might make it out to be here. Mahal ko ang Pilipinas dahil sa kabaitan ng Mga Kababayan!

In tagalog it may translate into "ingat." It may come out as a warning (beware) or a loving gesture (take care) Maybe we just want to go above and beyond sometimes our emotion or just being paranoid? 😂 We always say ingat.

I think it's because of Filipino's hospitality more to the foreigners than Filipinos. They want to ensure safety and want to give that warm and welcoming feeling to them. And also because some Filipinos are indifferent to other Filipinos but is different with foreign tourists. And also because Foreign tourists are less likely to steal than Filipinos because of poverty. And if you look at our history, we've been colonized by spanish, american, japanese I think that's also one of the reasons why Filipinos are like that to foreigners. It's ingrained in to our culture to be like that but I think it's better if we treat each other with love and kindness ŕegardless of whether you're a foreigner or a Filipino 😀.

Coz we love foreigners and "hate" ourselves. Since colonial times, and coz we are living on an archipelago, we are played against one another by our foreign masters to distrust one another. Most of the Filipinos care for foreigners might be because of an inferiority complex. We see you better compared to our own. That's why up to now, we still have this mentality. Add the fact on the decades ago, even today (despite having an "Iron Man" as a President), corruption is still on going. There is this "us vs. them" mentality. Good thing it didn't even devolved further that may result to a Balkanization.

    • @kathesnobbycat4586

Inferiority complex is real. It's like we engraved it in our minds even when we were kids I think (not because that's what our parents teach us, but it's more like a directive/instinct). And also, corruption is very deep here since the time of Aquinos (sorry for being political in this video). We've had enough of false promises.

Yes. It was the same for me, growing up. Watching about all the good stuffs in other countries and watching about all the negatives in the news about the PH really made me think that foreigners are better than out countrymen. Witnessing those didn't even help.
But now I completely understand that what we see on the news isn't everything. Rumours aren't to be trusted, too. And we definitely shouldn't havr listened to what the adults are talking about regarding the country's problems. Young kids might think it's scary and affect thrir evaluation of the people

    Hi Tom!
I totally understand your point. I am also guilty of saying those things to my foreign friends or colleagues. Because growing up in the Philippines specifically in Metro Manila opened my eyes to alot of things. One of those is safety. I tried living, working and visiting different cities here. And most of the time I do it by myself. I already encountered and experienced things that dangers my safety. Sometimes even though I am being careful still things happen. It's either your stuff will get snatched, someone will scam you, someone will harass you and etc. Your lucky that you never experienced such things and I wish you will never experience it. Come to think of it. I am a Filipino but still it happened to me. Lesson learned. So with that I am always extra careful and observant with my environment whenever I am out, whenever I do or deal with things (like paying using your card or just withdrawing your money..etc). And I also remind my friends to do the same. I don't want them to have a bad experience in my country. So it's always better to be safe than sorry.
Then with regards to Government. It's really hard to trust anyone there. Yeah we voted for them. But do you know the saying that people tend to change when they're dealing with money. That's the reason. And Philippine government is known for corrupt officials. Sad to say that even though we have a good president now which is Duterte. There are still people under him that still cannot help but steal money from the people. They think it's acceptable. That's why our President is trying to clean his administration. But then because of corruption tradition it's really hard to accomplish such thing.
Sorry for my long explanation. I hope you get my point. But then it's up to you. I totally respect all the things that you have said 😊✌
By the way I like your videos 😊

Maybe the standards of "honesty" has elevated over time and has been influenced by what people read or see from formal and informal media. I'm pretty sure there is corruption everywhere else and not just in the PH. The culture of cautioning or warning someone is customary regardless of culture. I think, these comments from the people (including me) are just genuinely concerned so that you don't get scammed. We hate scammers. We hate losing our hard earned money to someone who's lazy to work in an honest way. We have that rage in us that may have developed over time that we have failed to see the whole nation prosper because some people work harder, and the others just steal. We hate the fact that we see our neighboring countries prosper more while our work forces are being of service to other countries instead (take the case of OFWs). If the leaders here were truly good, they could have had created jobs for the PH people but instead, we have to send people away from their families to earn more. The good ones most likely have left the country. The remaining good ones decide to stay and work for the country. Now, we don't have enough decently skilled resources available locally because most of them left. Now, it seems that we have more bad apples left. Others can disagree with me but this is just one perspective that may be common to your viewers.

  • @teymercs

As a Filipina, I agree with this. Most people here are living in the past, unaware that lots of thing have already changed. Yes the comments about how we got this attitude from our historical and cultural background are true. However, it's time to stop blaming history and start changing our perceptions. Blaming (a toxic filipino culture btw) won't do us and our country any good in the future.

Hi Tom, I understand what you are saying. To make it simple for you to understand. We had so many instances that donations coming from other countries have been used by the politicians for their own benefit. When I did a donation drive here in Cebu City during the lockdown, I personally did it. That's the only way that I can be sure that all the money goes to the people in need.
About our things being so mindful, it's because of our past experiences and the experiences of our friends and family.
We love to say be careful/ Ingat/ Amping because we want to wish you well and for you not to let your guard down. We are not saying that something will happen to you but something bad MIGHT happen to you. It's better to be cautious than regret later. Have you heard of foreigners being robbed? Bags took by salisi gang?
I hope you'll live longer here in PH to fully understand why Filipinos react like that. I've been watching your videos for the past year, I just realized I haven't subscribed yet. I just subscribed.

...In my opinion, we think that it is better to be safe than sorry. Our country faced a lot of colonization in the past and also Philippines have more crime rates before.. today its seems a little bit unnoticeable but we cannot help ourselves to put our guards up for all the possibilities that we may encounter. It is not that we feel less secure in our country but it is more likely that we do not want to face a bad situation that we could avoid if we are more careful... I hope this would help.

It's just our way of showing our concern for your wellbeing, not necessarily an indication of lawlessness and danger abounding.
The Filipino parting shot to each other is "Ingat" or "Ingats" loosely meaning, be alert or vigilant. There's no direct translation to English because "ingat" literally means "think."
So we simply say "be careful" or "take care" When using English.
Hope that this will help you inderstand the nuances of our culture better.
We appreciate the intent of this video, but in answer to that? Yes, we do trust ourselves, but in the spirit of being careful we also practice the concept of "Trust, but verify" 😁😊

want to commend you for your honesty about it, where your coming from, wanting to truly understand filipinos mindset and where we’re coming from.
There are many factor to this.
    1. People’s experience
    2. Culturally, people have been distrustful of the government for a long time.
    3. Geography, we are coming from a nation w/ a very wide ethnicity, language and culture.
    4. Being clannish, culturally, we are very clannish people and tend to trust our families less than others.
    5. False humility, filipinos have been oppressed for so long historically from other nations invading us that we have been taught to look down on ourselves. We even have a saying “Juan tamad” it’s like saying in the US “Joe lazy”.

If you really have the compassion and love for your neighbor you want to go your way to make sure they received it and they in exchange give you that priceless smile and thanksgiving which is heavenly that you will miss if you only allow the government to do it for you. This is your merit to gain when you give to the poor by yourself. Don’t let the government steal even that merit that you deserved.

Fear and distrust are instilled in children at a young age because for most of history it was pretty lawless. Sure there are cops but money talks. You can buy your way out of or into anything there bcz it's still relatively poor in many parts. It was a 3rd world country before it was a developing country. Theft happens. You've just been lucky it hadn't happened to you. A lot of people don't have much so when they give it's from the heart. Hospitality is a must bcz culture dictates that. Filipinos are very open and giving but people don't trust big organizations bcz in the past there was always some level of corruption. Good on you for keeping an open heart. I hope you always keep that mentality. But I agree, it's overly cautious! You're taught to be cautious before anything has even happened.. you're very perceptive to have caught on. :)

Tom, it was because of the dark days of the Philippines back in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Mugging a foreigner is a common topic of some scenes in many Filipino movies in the 90s, most especially some comedy films. Kidnap for ransom was very rampant in the 80s and 90s, and the target? Foreigners. I know it was a long time ago, but for 30 years 70s to 90s, those were very difficult times for most people.

I believe that everyone should do things for God’s honor and glory, and not to please his own or others. Love like you‘re not scared; give even when it‘s not fair. Live life for another, take time for a brother. Your purpose to help wasn‘t sourced from the opinion of others, but it was because you are called to serve. Before, I look into a perspective where something bad might going to happen (as we've seen in the news, etc.) and we're fascinated about impressing each other with "who's better in this and who's not." - even if the place you wanna go to is fine or it's safe or the event you wanna be partnered with is a success, we tend to see it more the negatively.

It’s not trusting “each other” as much as not trusting the government when it comes to money and opportunities. Growing up, this wasn’t the Phils in terms of governance, however, it had changed a lot and I cannot exactly pin point the time (Martial Rule? ) when corruption was common place. I became hopeless until a tiny glimmer of hope emerged with the leadership right now, though not perfect, yet trying to eradicate the culture of corruption. Don’t bash me for sounding political (not my cup of tea) here. I believe, however, it’s up to the individual to live his life with integrity and with sound judgement, Tom. Shalom!

Because there's a lot of times that we pinoys ended up hurting others or screw relationship with others with intentions or without... I can't explain it too.... but given the history of our heritage from Aguinaldo to Luna to Bonifacio to gangsters in the past being betrayed by closest friend..and also I'm speaking with experiencing it first hand.. But I also agree that its not the case every time.. And it always come down to being cautious and just deciding better not trust at all.... Or at least sometin like that... so I get what you mean...I also get what other people mean....its sad but it happens to others so they just want you to be cautious.. That's all..I hope I'm making any sense.. And be able to put a positive message to get through....

I am always cautious, that's it. Not because of being a Filipino but because of the crimes and bogus people everywhere and any where, you do not trust easily. I still believe in humanity though.

I can unpack all the history and socio-antropological logic to answer your questions regarding this mentality but I neither have the time nor enough space for this. We appreciate you being in the country and being our ally by promoting our tourism to your Anglo-American friends. Being in my country for X amount of time doesnt mean you know us. Most of the people you spoke with regarding being cautious is generalizing our kababayan but its is not to rule that its not happening. Theives and scammers especially to the most urbanize areas exist. If you wanna dive deeper into this connect with Filipino anthropologists/professors or experts in the field or to DOT(Dept. Of Tourism).

If you want to make a donation, you want to make sure it goes to a reputable organization. If you give it to the government, the percentage of it going to the people who most need it would be low due to corruption. So next time you do a fundraiser, figure out which org you would give the proceeds to; that way, people would feel more confident that their donation will be put to good use. You might even raise more than your initial 40k.
As for being warned all the time, I’m sure you know about the prevalent culture of hiya and how we love our foreigners. If something bad happens to them, then the hiya takes over because it gives the country a bad name.

The reason why a lot of filipinos warning u to give it directly to the people who mostly need it is because of our government. Well, good to know that for the whole year u stayed here not a lot of people took advantage of you. It's our government that's corrupt. Mostly it's some of our Local Government Units. If you donate some money it will either be given away to public longer than it needed to or it won't be given away at all, like the 275 billion budget that was released and there is no transparency for that.

Tom, you must have noticed by now how nationalistic many of us, Filipinos, are; sometimes to a fault. I, for one, care a lot for the image of our country and if some anomaly befalls upon our guests - like you, for one - we take it personally, which we shouldn't but still do. LoL! We become protective of good people like you - that's a cultural thing in us and I hope we keep that trait forever, for better or worse. Good-meaning Filipinos would give you unsolicited advice - another cultural thing - and it's our way of trying to keep you from harm. In due time you'll get to understand a lot of other Filipino cultural nuances. On the opposite extreme side of the spectrum, we could also be very unforgiving. Fun fact: In the 1960's, at the height of the Beatles (yes, the Fab Four) fame, they came to the Philippines for a concert. Being the smug British that they were, they said derogatory things about us. It took battalions of military men to control the crowd that wanted to lynch them at the airport, on their flight out of the country. LoL! That must have been a sobering experience for those Brishits (no misspelling here). LoL!

In my humble opinion, whenever Filipinos (me included) would be asked for one word that would describe our PH govt, there would be more chance that unpleasant remarks would be heard from our mouths. But if you would search the satisfaction rating of our President, fair and good ratings are faring well as per statistics.
I acknowledge that while PH govt has ill publicity to the masses (due to media influence), we will be able to pinpoint trustworthy govt officials, both in national and local counterparts.
In general, the untrusting culture of the Pinoys (towards another Pinoy) would be due to historical, regional/cultural and individual reasons. History has recorded the divide and conquer scheme of the Spaniards has resulted to wars and battles between Filipinos (basically between higher classes vs lower classes). Regional disputes also have caused labelings and stereotypes across certain ethnic groups like Tagalogs' prejudice to the Visayans (and vice versa). And lastly, individual distrust towards other Pinoys due to personal experience or perceived illustration that results into hostility and disgust.
Dividing spirit would be so prevalent in PH historically, regionally/culturally and individually BUT there is still hope - only if the newer generation would not allow to inherit this bad trait of the past.
    Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!
I wish I would contribute to the oneness of PH -that despite the differences in opinions, I would be able to see PH in light.
    :)

Maybe you got scammed few times before but you just didn’t know. One time i saw a foreigner getting into a taxi cab from NAIA airport and the driver said the fare is only 6,000 pesos. The foreigner was like ‘okay’ and got in. 6000 pesos! No city within metro manila would cost that amount of money. I was very young when that happened (long before grab and uber came around) but I remember being shocked up to this day.

About saying take care or be careful, its like normal to say it to anybody who is going somewhere to remind them to keep safe since I care for them or something like that but it doesn't mean something bad will happen because we don't rust other people in our community.

I'm a Filipino British that has grown up and lived in England for 27 years. Only recently went back to the PH and got to know my relatives and the culture again. Big mistake! I put my trust in relatives thinking they would be out there for me. Instead, my stuff goes missing, because they steal it, being so self entitled as they are, guilt trip me by making asinine comments like "you feed the dog better than us" when they already had enough to eat and were given money every week, and demand they stay in my mom's house for free with even more freebies, and they complain I'm spoiled when I simply want my own privacy. Respect for personal space and right to my own things not being touched doesn't exist in Filipino culture, especially if you are from the West but are blood related. When my ignorant aunt fed my dog onions, I had to be the one to shoulder the vet bills, and then they complain I'm always angry, when I simply got fed up with how ignorant and abusive they were of me and my mother's kindness. We took them for vacation in a nice beach resort, and all they could do was complain that it was a waste of money. My cousin stayed in my mom's house for 3 years for free so he could better his life, and all he could do is play Mobile Legends day and night for months on end, made so much noise, always smoking and drinking in the house, bringing his boyfriend and his mother and other siblings and their kids, and ended up stealing 50,000 pesos of my mom's money, and a lot more like clothes, perfumes and so on. If they are dirt poor for a reason, it's because their mentality and culture is rotten to the core. A message to ALL 2nd generation Westernized Filipinos, here is a stark warning: DO NOT GO TO THE PHILIPPINES. Or if you do, DO NOT BE AROUND YOUR RELATIVES!!!!

Hope you read this Kuya Tom!
Although I love the Philippines, our government is very corrupt, especially with donations. We're telling you that it may be possible that the orginization or someone you're giving that money to give to the people that need help, will spend some of that money on electicity, transportation etc. And you have to take into account that thats probably not even worst case senario. The worst thing that could happen is that they (they meaning the person/organization that will give out handouts) will pocket the money. The people that need help will probably see less of that money. You have to understand that the reason we Filipinos are so paranoid is that we have been under a corrupt for so long that by now, we're used to it. What we're saying is to make sure you know how that money is being spent once you give it. We Filipinos trust each other, more than anyone in the world. The reason your comments are full of people telling you to give that money straight to them is that we're scared that they wont be able to see all of that money once it gets to them. Hope this helps Kuya Tom!
