Wonderful. My grandfather who was an indentured carpenter in the 1920s explained the ‘a bad workman blames his tools’ as follows.
‘Put another way it means that a craftsman uses only the right tool for the job, and a really good tool at that’.

I could watch Ben scrape and sand wood for hours, with that beautifully relaxing voice of his. Best unintentional ASMR ever. I learn heaps and feel chill.

Ben with a chisel, or two, in his hands…. Equilibrium is restored! Life is good! 🥰🥰🎸🎸☕️☕️

I have one of those strops and I use it for chisels not frets! What a killer tool. Nice one Ben! I'm really glad to see you posting videos again that contain the information I've come to rely on from you. I so missed you brother. ✌️&💙

"You can sharpen to 500,...... if you cut yourself, it will hurt" whereas... if you sharpen to 6k or 12k and then strop, it will be so sharp you won't even feel it cut you and will first realise when you bleed all over your workpiece - ask me how I know ! 😉
You're a brave man Ben, discussing sharpening techniques on UA-cam for all the armchair experts to pull to bits - I appreciate the way you explained that a number of techniques may be equally appropriate for different uses by different people and there's an element of personal taste, this is in contrast to many who are quite evangelical about their chosen method !

The sharper the tool the more of a pleasure it is to use.

I agree, I can get lost in sharpening and also get bored with it! I like to use diamond plates for rough shaping, 400/1000, if the chisel has been used and abused or was never flat in the first place. Then I work up through my water stones to 6000 and finish with rouge on a flat piece of wood. I like the V mk11 for a honing guide, gives consistent results. Using a strop "free hand" is a good idea, similar way I sharpen a drawknife - tuck one handle under your armpit and use a sharpening stone to flatten and sharpen, then switch. Keep chasing that burr, folks!

What I’d like is a double cut Les Paul in the style of a ‘59 figured/flamed sunburst, so it would have a carved top (ie not flat Les Paul jr) but with a wraparound bridge. A bit PRS Santana I guess but without the trem

A micro bevel doesn't actually alter the cut. It won't cut any better (or worse). But ... if you're working, it's a lot faster to get back to sharp, because you just hit the micro bevel again, and there's less metal to remove. Well, until you eventually need to redo it fully. I also use tormek sharpeners really heavily. A wood lathe is a great motivator, there. They're basically high powered too dulling machines. And worse, the tools are annoyingly complex shapes.

Stunning similarity to Processor "Lapping" in PC Overclocking!
    (Wet-sanding a nickel/copper processor cap every 500 grits up to 3500)
    Also Gloriously Therapeutic!

Love watching you sharpen and sand!
I use sandpaper disks up to 4000 grit on acrylic disks that I put on a pillar drill to sharpen my chisels. Can even glue a disk of leather to an acrylic disk as a spinning strop.

Making sure that the tool that you work with is up to the job also applies to the humans that one has to endure sometimes!

I do use stones or diamond stones normally but still struggle a bit with curved gouges which take me forever if I'm being honest...

Known fact- all edged tools get sharper in the presence of arteries. Please consider using the outside of the forearm for testing. I nicked myself badly once during testing when an unanticipated ( and very unwelcome) fart made me jerk. Did not even know I was cut until I had bled on everything important in the vicinity. Stay safe.

I miss the (great) guitar builds, the jokes the narration and the down right excellent designs. The barrage of "shorts" is just not for me. I hope the builds videos come back, if not, than sadly it's just not my kind of channel anymore.
