My wife stopped me (literally) as I walked out my front door a couple of years ago, she said "We will never need money in this house that badly that I would see you in this state"! I handed my van keys in that morning, I phoned my workmate to explain he said, "If a job is affecting your health, it`s time to find a new one mate"!
My brother I had a similar experience with my bride. When they say to you, "you are an unhappy person and need to find something else to do" it really hit home and very hard. Fortunately I was able to leave and never look back or regret it either. Be well and safe peace to you and yours.
That's a really elegant way of saying that, you must be blessed in having your wife. My ex what have said it more like "Suck it up you pssy". Well not really, I wouldn't allow that kind of disrespect but she would think it. Which is why she is the ex.
Just did the same yesterday. I noticed in the past year that my mental, physical and emotional health were getting really bad. To the point that being miserable felt normal if that makes sense. Finally I said "To hell with the money. What good is money if I can't enjoy it?" I quit cold. Left the company last night and had the most peaceful drive home.
Your work alone inspired hundreds if not thousands of redones and luthier total builds that will be played on stages, garages and bedrooms passed down through the ages. Impressive too say the least. Do carry on with your life and call it all good. Thank you for the inspiration.
Learning to say "no" is one of the most difficult lessons we learn as humans, mostly due to FOMO. However, as finite beings, saying "yes" to everything due to FOMO causes us to miss out on the full joy of the things we really love. Forget FOMO. Embrace focus. Count your blessings. Enjoy life.
Sad to hear this. You have given amateur guitar builders not only the chance to visit but create that special guitar that we all are looking for. All our best wishes to you and the rest of the staff and families. 👍👍🎶🎶🎶🎶
Partly because of you ben, when the other week I was walking around a salvage and antique store way out in the sticks, I got excited about a restored tools section. I bought an antique brace.that excitement came partly from the things I learnt from you. Thank you Ben.
Proud of you, Ben. Your ‘no’ muscle is actually a ‘yes’ muscle, and it’s important the former works hard for the latter. Thanks for sharing a painful but valuable process. I’m excited to see how you grow from here x
Thank you Ben from Oregon St. U.S.A. I've enjoyed the many years I have watched and laughed and learned from this side of the pond. Good luck to you my friend.
Such a sad moment !! Sad to see a true passion for you go by the way side !! I'm glad you get to do this on your terms and not forced out !! Hope this move helps you on your way "forward" . God bless !!!
Very impressive self-awareness to know when it's time to throw in the key's on a project you can tell you love so passionately. Reminds me of when my project ended and I sat on the floor of the building and wept. It's so wonderful to see you create wholesome content that brings people together and you display your passion and love. Thanks for all you do.
I found this out a couple of days ago when I went on the site to look at vintage strap hammers. I can see that you are clearing your mind Ben, clearing it for the better. I look forward to the future of Crimson and what you do.
this really sucks! I feel your pain! I love doing the same thing- restoring old things giving them a second life. making something people will love and use once again, there is a spirit in it! I`m so sorry Ben :(
Thank you and the team for the great online presence, ideas, education and inspiration... and entertainment. I'm a great believer in knowing when to stop, and we all must write new chapters in our own book of life. I wish you good luck and success for your future.
Ben. Thank you for giving me the inspiration to work on my guitars and learn from you. Ive watched you over many years. Glad to see you put yourself first. You are a fantastic builder and working with tools. In a world full of power tools no one needs to forget that learning how to use manual tools is essential just like many of the old craftsmen have taught us. Thank you Ben. God bless. Eddy from Melbourne Australia.
This video gets a like because you are doing what you need to, and it takes courage to be public like this with your mental health journey. For another obsessive like me, you sharing this journey with us is huge and encouraging, so thank you for this.
Ben you will continue to encourage and inspire both budding and experienced luthiers as long as your content exists. Please take care of yourself. My thanks for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and spirit
Wise, so wise. But I’d like to remind you what you shared and learned us with the vintage tools thing. This has given knowledge and inspiration all around you, and this will last forever! Thanks a lot Mr Ben❤
I admire both the realisation, decision, and most of all: taking action. Do your thing ❤❤ And if your thing includes bringing out your inner Rob Halford more and more, I'm all for for it 🤘🤘
Life is about choices. Vintage Tool Shop was a beautiful creation and had a fantastic run. I even bought several sets of vintage carving tools from you for my own collection. But ultimately, you have to choose what is best for YOU. While the shop may close, we will always have the memories of receiving that rare plane, chisel, handsaw, or fine wood carving tool set in the post. So, while you move on, Ben, never doubt your choices. 😢😉
Thank you for the blood sweat and tears good sir. I'm not a words person in these instances, fare thee well. I experienced the phasing out of film projection, the perfect job for me. The operation and maintenance/repair was a constant and mundane but rewarding thing to do. They kept our films for the archives. It's no small thing to move on from something you love. I wish you all the luck.
Sorry to hear this Ben. Hanging out in the VTS and playing “what does this tool do” was definitely one of my highlights from visiting you. Look after yourself and I’m sure everything else will thrive. 👊
I wish you all the luck in your new endevor. I understand what you are going through (mind and soul). I have been there and done that really doesn't cover all that we have gone through in our lives. I am sad that you are losing a part of what you love, but you have to know your limitations and when to cut things off before it destorys you. Good luck and God bless.
Soul searching is one thing but it's a whole other leap to put those learnings into practise. You seem to be getting a good handle on life and as always sharing and helping others learn through your own journeys. Us creative types can struggle with so many things. I'm the opposite to you....suffering from option paralysis. I'm trying to learn to "just do it". Meanwhile you're learning what NOT to do. Hats off to you sir. You remain an inspiration to me.
Just bumped into Ben outside the Bristol guitar show. Happily he looked very enthusiastic about life and was generous to give up some of his time for a chat. Sadly my daughter was having a meltdown (sorry about that Ben) but he was very understanding. Lovely man and wish you all the best for your future projects.
Wish you all the best my friend, feel like I know you, your doing the right thing for you,, take care, love your passion ❤️,,, never change,,, beautiful work of art,, thank you for sharing them, Sam
We met at Makers in 2018. I can honestly say say you’re a true gent I know from experience that mental health does serious mess with your head. You have to do what’s right for you M,L&R
I've watched all of your videos and learned how to do setups better, and my building shows some of the stuff I've learned from your videos. Good luck In your future endeavors, I'm sure you will do some great things in your life. Mitch Sperling Knoxville TN
Dear Ben, I can more than understand your motivations. I felt similar to you. Sometimes it's just more important to be aware of his remaining life and above all his unique health. Happiness calls from the inside and you know exactly what you have to do to experience it. This includes unbriable courage. Courage to yourself. Courage to be unique with all the talents and to yourself. You are strong and because you are carried deep inside, you will not doubt or regret any of your steps. I'm sending you all the energy in this world. With best thoughts Beat
Wow, bummer’s, I was hoping some day that I could have you make me a guitar but really I wish you all the best, I’ve truly enjoyed watching a master craftsman create some of the most incredible piece’s of art I have ever seen, god bless you in all that you do !
Sad as the closure is its the right thing for you to do and must have taken a lot of courage to finally shut the doors. Onwards Mr Crowe we are right behind you in everything you do. Cheers mate
My brother you will be missed. You have to do what is best for you and yours and if that means moving on so be it. I personally was relieved to be able to move on from a company and position that, frankly, was draining. The bride said to me one morning over the table "you are not a happy person and you need to find something else to do". Like most of our gender, males, we don't seem to be able to look out far enough in our own spheres and observe the affect it has on those we care the most for. Fortunately, time was kind to me and was able to leave that situation and start fresh. Now a few years removed I am able to volunteer at a shop where we refurbish and sell all manner of tools. My special "itch" are the edged tools we receive. Things like vintage knifes, chisels, and planes. You and your shop have been an inspiration to me personally. Restoring a vintage tool to what it was new and selling it to someone to use again to create is so much fun. And it also allows me to inspire young people to learn to use their hands along with their minds. Be well and safe peace to you and yours.
Man! I see so many things that I would love to have added to my own collection. I wish I knew this store existed beyond Crimson Guitars. But you gotta do what you need to. Man, I wish I had known about this place earlier.
Congrats on the move, have been banging on that this needed to happen for you for so long now, it will hurt short term but the long term return will be so much better for you. Concerning though that you stated GGBO is shut in way for the museum, I think I speak for many when we say we began and continued to watch and support the channel because of your building content, Q&As etc and now the guitar draw and museum stuff has pushed a lot of us away because well, its just boring... That said, if youre truly closing doors on the GGBO also, then please consider handing the reins over to someone else to run the competition and allow something that bought so much of us together to live on.
This is real wisdom, Ben, as hard as it may be. I have similar things going on, neurologically, and simplifying to focus on a smaller number of big things is absolutely the way to go. Spreading ourselves thin is so tempting, I know! But it's much healthier to say "No. This is what I'm about. This is what I can do." Your life will still be full of beauty! And tools, obviously.
It's a sad time saying goodbye to a business you love doing (been there done that) but you have to look ater your mental and physical health and family first (and done that too), and look after your main breadwinning business. Life is about moving forward. All the best to you and yours.
Having read the comments there is not a lot more i could say aprt from ... We will miss the VTS as much as you BUT.... will be great to see what you come up with at Crimson... Look after yourself.. much respect and Peace N love..... Davey P.. UK
I'm only gutted that living so far away - I never got to visit this in person. Now with that said, the right decision - clearly. Keep the memories - and make sure you keep some items from the shelves too 🙂
Onwards and upwards Mr C! We all love the stuff you do, the things you have made, the things you are making and the things that, doubtless, you will continue to make! Humility, humour and humanity! Cannot wait till the Guitar Museum opens its doors! 🥰🥰🎸🎸☕️☕️
I got some vintage tools I brought back to life but then I grab a new one instead because it looks so pretty and shiny on it's shelf... You did that times ten
I'm sad to see your anguish, but (FWIW), I think that you have done the Right Thing, and that's very brave. I'm glad that you chose Crimson Guitars and your health. I wish you the very best.
Oh Holy Hell- I didn't even have a chance to buy anything😭 I knew it was coming, though, but the timing vs finances never seem to work in my favor. I wanted an egg beater hand drill, but every time I looked they were either too expensive for me at the time, or there weren't any at all. And of course, with my addiction to planes, I've always lusted after those.. and chisels.. and files...I'm going to regret missing out on getting at least a chisel or file, or anything, really. Anyway, I'll write more about this in the next letter, or maybe an email- I have a lot of thoughts I want to discuss or at least pass on to the one person I know who shares my love for the tools our great- great grandparents used. I do commend you for finally accepting your own limitations, and taking the realistic leap and prioritizing between what you must do, want to do, can do, and should do. It's about time, my friend. God Bless you, Ben, and Farewell, VTS.
Sorry to see any enterprise devoted to historic tools come to an end. When I was in grade school, learning to read, I was given my choice of a box of old library books to take home as my own. I looked at them all and chose a book on Archaeology, because of it's connection to history, and most especially, because of the pictures of old tools. I'm going on 70 years old now, and made a career in technology, of the information variety, but that was and is simply the latest incarnation of man's use of tools to create. It was that idea I fell in love with so long ago, and that flame still burns even now. Hope those tools find a good home, and that the shop may yet find a new proprietor. All the best in your next chapter.
I know how you feel, I've been working in a factory for the better part of 10 years and Im 31. I'm fortunate enough I have a second chance to go back to school for Power Engineering, and at the same time move in with my partner. Feels kinda like the stars are aligning for me. All the best for the everyone and their families!
It’s all been said! I’ve been downsizing for a while, and after the first shock of parting with things I had acquired, it got easier! I’m not through, by a long shot, but it feels good to downsize. If downsizing feels good isn’t that a form of healing? It also freed up real estate in my shops! Carry on my wayward son! Thanxz
You have to look after your mental health, your a great guy. I remember meeting you at birmingham guitar show, seeing you looking absolutely shattered on Nottingham motorway services. I thought you looked shattered as much as I would love to say hello and have a chat you looked like you just needed quiet, then you shocked me by coming and talking too me, you had no Idea that I was going through a divorce, and your taking the time to speak helped with my mental health, you may or may not belief same as me, but I'm praying for you as you move to the next season in your life, I hope I get a chance to talk to you in person again, but I am still grateful for the time on the services that day.
I'm from the states and grew up ina 1670 Colonial Timber frame. This video reminded me of the time when Dad build a barn in the same fashion. He had a ship builders tool chest many of the tools on your walls. Thanks for the memory Bon Chance!
Your love for tools has has found a place in me. It be began with saving my Norse grand fathers tools .My fathers as tools were next when he passed . My eyes are always looking for that old Hudson brace ,hand plane or gouge some one doe not want anymore . Love pre plastic tools with real wood handles and character from years of use and handling. Follow your heart ,keep your health and strive for happiness . A little love and support from Minnesota . Joel "Birdy" Lovejoy
Sorry it's come to an end. But you're absolutely right, your mental health comes 1st. Without it, not even Crimson would exist. All the best with everything else. We're always here for you! ❤
You will now be able to enjoy your passion for tools for you and without the energy required of a buisness… which is where it started no doubt.. you will rediscover the simple personal selection that are yours and won’t lose the love . ❤
A difficult decision but the right one, your health is the most important thing and although you will have regrets you will know it had to be taken. Keep going Ben, we love you.
A shame to hear, I know you are passionate about it...hopefully all the tools find good homes and someone with more time is able to step up and keep this going. I live in the USA and it amazing to me to find tools with the histories that you have in europe. Sure there are some nice vintage things floating around but not nearly as much, especially in Texas.
You’re still continuing with the Crimson Guitars channel? Hope so!! Master at your craft! All the very best. Hopefully one day I’ll own a Crimson Guitar, be well!!
Always take care of yourself. I'm in a similar boat. I know the business I work at is in play for a sale, and my decision is do I retire when we get sold or hang on a little longer. I'm so tired of corporate BS that I have decided to hang it up when I turn 56 in July. I'll probably start making bass pickups (not a new skill for me) or something else guitar related. Again, take care of yourself first and foremost.
Thank you for doing this. Thank you for keeping old tools alive. Thank you for letting me be part of the vintagetoolshop community. Thank you BUN. Health is more important! You are great BUN
I can't help but feel sad that it's going. Your passion for vintage tools and the store was so clear. But if it's taking too much out of you, it's the right thing to do. Take care of yourself, Ben. We can always get vintage tools elsewhere.
Thanks for the great plane you were kind enough to sell and send to the US for me. I think we can understand your priorities but i admit i will miss your content, the great shop, and the fun it was…cause i’m a selfish … Seriously wish you the best of luck.
Wow. It’s a tough thing, but you are absolutely right… you just can’t do it all. Keep doing good things for yourself Ben. Your looking happier and healthier these days. - Rob Allen -
Whatever you're doing, good luck with that! It's always like that when one chapter ends and another begins. I gave up on guitars about 7 years ago. I was passionate about them, but it just wore off. I haven't played guitar for a year or two. I'm a synth guy now. But I think it will pass too some day..
Sorry to see this go, I can see that you are gutted. But again you can only do so much and there are only so many hours in a day. Good luck with the new Crimson tools etc. I agree, you mental health should come first and I am sure you made the right call.
I am really sorry that you still are going through it, the black dog sucks the joy and energy from everything. I have looked at the studio I built from scratch myself, brick by brick, and thought similarly, I hardly play at the moment, something that has been my life for so long. I really hope you are getting help and find the joy again. Remember it's a journey... take care.
Oh damn. That sucks but glad you’re taking care of yourself. I’ll try to buy something if I can to show my support if you’re having any sales or anything. Kinda sad I never got one of those tiny planes.
Yeah, super sad to see this, but I totally get it. I’m a bit of a tool collector myself, and have wanted to support the shop, but shipping from England puts most of their stuff way above the price of more local sellers. (West Coast US)
Road don't end you might leave but you'll be fine there sir choice is a biggest option to men but demand for yourself what you know of making one of brightest guitars in the making that's how your known for Ben 😊be happy and enjoy life 🎸😎😊thxz for the wonderful videos you brought to us ALL 👍🙌🤘👋
There's only so many hours in a day. When you are a creative tools hold a special place in that you know the potential of what you can do with them. Obviously then its hard to let them go
Finally! A video click-bait title that actually delivers! *laughs through tears*. Alas, but everything has its time and you take care of your priorities, Ben. I never got to visit the toolshop but very glad I got to see it and enjoy it vicariously through your videos. Thank you.

Thank you for all you have done. You have given us so much.
Sad to hear this. You have given amateur guitar builders not only the chance to visit but create that special guitar that we all are looking for. All our best wishes to you and the rest of the staff and families. 👍👍🎶🎶🎶🎶

yeah, I was about to fly to the UK with my butt kickin boots on

I bought an amazing gouge from Vintage Tool Shop, very old, boxwood handle, I love it. Sad to see you bring it to an end.
You’re a good dude, Ben! I feel honored to have made it to the shop before it closed. You’re making the right moves, even though they may hurt. 👍🏻
Sad as the closure is its the right thing for you to do and must have taken a lot of courage to finally shut the doors. Onwards Mr Crowe we are right behind you in everything you do. Cheers mate

Spreading ourselves thin is so tempting, I know! But it's much healthier to say "No. This is what I'm about. This is what I can do." Your life will still be full of beauty! And tools, obviously.
The logo was a thing of beauty. Good luck Ben.
Davey P.. UK
You've got to do what you need to do to take care of yourself. It will be fine in the long run. We truly believe in you, Ben. Take care.
Thank you! Take care
It's a shame but you need to look after you. Take care mate and no doubt see you again very soon. Love you guys
Luv n hugs, Fella. We’ve all got your back. Onwards and upwards. Make it so.
Ben. You are an awesome guy, trust yourself. 👍
Wishing you and all your vintage tools the best.
All things must pass as the seasons. Thank you for sharing
Good luck with everything and I don't think you realize the inspiration you've been to me and I'm Shure many new builders..
Thank you for doing this. Thank you for keeping old tools alive. Thank you for letting me be part of the vintagetoolshop community. Thank you BUN. Health is more important! You are great BUN
Sad but you can only do what you can do, I follow you for the guitar building and look forward to continuing to do so.....nice jacket by the way.
I can't help but feel sad that it's going. Your passion for vintage tools and the store was so clear. But if it's taking too much out of you, it's the right thing to do. Take care of yourself, Ben. We can always get vintage tools elsewhere.
😢 from Galicia Spain. It's important your live. Be Happy wid your family. ( Sorry for my level of inglish).
Thanks for the great plane you were kind enough to sell and send to the US for me. I think we can understand your priorities but i admit i will miss your content, the great shop, and the fun it was…cause i’m a selfish …
Seriously wish you the best of luck.
Sounds like some sensible and essential life rebalancing to me. Well done for having the bravery to make these decisions. Many would not.
a sad day for the parish. stay happy Ben, that's most important
Time for a change. One loop closes the other begins. Progress. Best Wishes.
Letting go is hard, I can sympathize, forward and onward
Wow. It’s a tough thing, but you are absolutely right… you just can’t do it all.
Keep doing good things for yourself Ben. Your looking happier and healthier these days.

Good luck with your next venture.
Whatever you're doing, good luck with that! It's always like that when one chapter ends and another begins. I gave up on guitars about 7 years ago. I was passionate about them, but it just wore off. I haven't played guitar for a year or two. I'm a synth guy now. But I think it will pass too some day..
Wishing you the best mate!!!!!
Thank you.
We experience some sore ones in life but often these are opportunities to grow into other things. One door closes another one opens.
