Yep... Fenix 6 and 830 owner....
I am not sure how sensors, integration, compatibility is not even mentioned in this video as if they didn't matter at all....
Speed sensor, cadence sensor, even e-bike compatibility on the 830, not mentioning that they work out of the box with Strava, Trail Forks and support industry standard track export. Linux, Windows, OSX, Android support ... etc etc etc...
A real sports watch vs an office toy ...

I’ve got a Fenix 5X, and the only complaint I have is the accuracy of the heart rate sensor. I’m told the Apple Watch sensor is extremely accurate, which is nice, but Apple doesn’t let Garmin devices use that data. If I could ditch my heart rate strap, I’d gladly do so, but I don’t see a way to do that right now.

Garmin Fenix (6 pro x) battery life: 25 days
    Apple watch : 2.5 days
Garmin also works with Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and you are not chained to the Apple store ...
It talks to my sensors (speed cadence), transmits my heart rate to my handlebar garmin when I use one.
Also has crash detection and dual GPS.
BTW: crash detection is useless if you ride rough rocky stuff and/or jumps and do abrupt stops. I triggered it on pretty much every ride. If you wan that, you should get an in-helmet one probably.
Now you can pick up a Fenix 6 for around $500.
Has integration with pretty much EVERYTHING, from Trail Forks to Strava to .gpx export.
IMHO there is no good "do it all" device. If you are serious, you are not going to dive with an Apple Watch. Nor a Garmin. You will get a dive specific Suunto or Scubapro or similar dive computer.
I don't see people who ride 4-5+ times a week changing their sport watches to this gimmick....
Come on... now we are "night vision compatible" because they added a red/black mode :O
    Just my 2c ...

PS ... I don't mean to offend anyone and I am not an Apple hater.....
When they start producing computers you can upgrade/repair I might even get one again.
I was actually tempted to get an iPhone just for the LIDAR on it, but then I reminded myself of the Apple Store ecosystem I am really not missing :)

Not much a fanboy but i just don’t see anybody making a similar size watch can have 10 times battery, it can not be done with cars for example, it must mean 10 times less usage for battery thus something does not need or is absent as a precise feature.

  • @330_Crew

For most people this will be all they ever need.
But Garmin 530 with Trailforks integration and ability to preload defined routes with turn by turn directions is way more practical if your doing serious cycling. Not to mention on bike and chest HR sensors that are more accurate.
For hardcore enthusiasts, Dedicated Garmin is more feature rich.

Some great points and would definitely be an upgrade over just using your phone, but to recommend this for ONLY cycling is crazy. For about half the price, you can get a Garmin 530 that has all the features you mentioned, plus trail forks navigation (not to mention all the more road cycling centric features). I can only see this being a good purchase if you really want a smartwatch for day to day use, or you are maybe a runner or something as well.

    • @denesk2794

You can get an 830 for $399. Or a Fenix 6X for $449.
I agree that either of those are a much better fit if you ride a lot. I actually own both an 830 and a Fenix 6 Pro X.
Excellent units with 10x the battery life for the Fenix 6 ( 25 hours estimated :unless you enable all sensors and Wifi 24/7, which I don't ... of course less if you ride 1-2 hours a day, but still comfortably pushing 2 weeks plus on a charge. )

Do yo get cell service with those? I head out with my Apple Watch for long ride, beach trips, etc, and don’t have to carry a cellphone. It syncs up with Strava and I compared it to my garmin head units and its often as accurate or more accurate and I don’t need a chest HR strap. The only cool thing would if it could sync up to power meter.
The Apple Watch is also still appropriate for work and doesn’t look like a Casio GSHock….
Lastly, the resale value is great on Apple products, Ive gotten pretty good cash or trade up credits on older Apple watches.

    •  2 роки тому +1

@@Thomas-fy9yc You are right with the design, Fenix with shirt looks odd. However watch will never be as accurate as chest strap. And if you need navigation either on road or mtb, it is very dangerous to check the wrist during the trail or fast descent. That is the reason, why, if you will start riding a lot, you will use your bike computer in front of you, where you can see all data you need. I tried to ride known mtb trails with watch on, but in hot weather watch tend to slide down on wrist because of sweat. And same cross country skiing, where watch under mittens causing pain. I own AW, however for serious sports I always use Fenix.

When integrated with Strava, you can ensure that these different activities are separated. The Strava app on the AW is, in my opinion, a better workout app than the native Apple variant. It has the majority of the same features as Apple’s version, but it has much more flexibility and a degree of more functionality. As a disabled e-bike rider, I use it for all my e-bike rides, both on the road and the mountain bike trails.

Wait...so Garmin lets you control music on your iPhone in any situation like biking, driving, working out, walking, relaxing, flying? And make and take calls? And let's you text? And lets you audio record? And lets you interface to AirPods? And your calendar? And gives you alerts to remind you of life priority issues of your choosing? Wow...it's strange then why Apple is one of the biggest companies in the entire world....all the dummies have been buying Apple while the smart people bought Garmin....no wonder they have billions in cash and Garmin doesn't.
And brilliant analyst skills....you mean....like Apple waited for there to be an established highly populated user base in a field that they could swoop into at any moment and gradually dominate? That's called very smart business sense...letting someone else build the platform....take the risks....do the marketing until mind share on products of that arena are widely accomplished...and THEN come in with hey guys...got something you might like that's going to tie into the entire iPhone user base in ways that a Garmin never will be able to , and slowly pick off the customers that have already been made to appreciate Garmin features that now exist in the iPhone ecosystem ...for the iPhone user base that also has used Garmin...guess what product they'll more likely buy the NEXT time they need GPS outdoor functions that only bought Garmin because there was no competition? That's how smart analysts would examine the scenario....and is exactly how Apple thinks and executes....just another derivation of how the Japanese market works...let someone else do the inventing and suffer all the hiccups of that process....then simply make a better "thing" and sell it to those that obviously want something like but bought the inferior product first....it's called letting your competition create the market for you.

@@locophoto6881 Apple is a boring company in a predictable product cycle. ios is a watered down OS made for Grandma's and Facebook moms. The fact that you have to jailbreak the OS to get basic customization features is ridiculous. Apple will never have the clientele or the people to appeal to cyclists unless it's a brainwashed apple fan such as yourself. Not to mention Apple likely never will take into account certain features that are vital cyclists like strava live segments. Enjoy!

@@mioutdoors426 Jealous of their success much? Work at your own life, and it will improve...the classic sign of a loser, is the one that is simply critical and negative and insulting.
iOS boring and watered down for grandmas? I'm not a fan of Apple's internal culture, I've seen it at the highest levels, with Steve Jobs personally knowing my name before he died. But to say iOS is watered down is really juvenile since iPhone is the most popular phone of choice amongst countless corporate employees and governments. Not exactly grandma, hence how I tell you're simply bitter and jealous and not a mature and reasonable analyst of data.
New flash that may help....Apple is never focused on pleasing one group of people for their approval...they're in the business of making as much money as possible to forward their political agenda while claiming their goal is to "change the world", putting up with conservatives for the sake of capturing their money.
Feel free to explain the intellectual logic of your frustration though...why should it be important to Apple to cater to cyclist when they can make much more money focusing on larger demographics that have much more disposable income? Seriously...explain your thinking please..and that process might help you think different. ;)

The problem I see for road biking, no Ant+ support and no integration with garmin. The second point can be worked around with multiple apps running in the background and have a power meter and HRM with BT instead of Ant+. If someone could suggest an app that can use the HRM, Power meter, (Garmin Varia support for radar) with lap counter, router planning, I’d reconsider Apple. However, at this price point, I could just get a Garmin smart watch which has all the things the new Apple Watch with even better battery life, for about the same price. I actually think the Sat call ability of the 14 is potentially a bigger "win" although hopefully one never needs it. I have a series 7 and agree, it sucks for biking, I never wear it when park riding, and have tried protective cases for trail, but once sweat gets in them, the touch functionality hardly works. With durability you have no point here because there is no way to tell yet if it will hold up better in the real world or not. That being said, my Gear S3 Frontier Watch has the screen slightly lower than the surrounding navigation ring, this helps to protect the screen from scratches. And so far I have yet to hit any button by accident, with or without gloves.
And while mine doesn´t have a hard fall detection, other watches have for a while now and even mine can, and is, set up to send an emergency call and notifications to emergency contacts if I press the home button quickly 3 times. In Addition the Garmin on my bike does have a Hard Fall sensor.
The Wayfinder thing looks and sounds more or less like how Komoot presents your ongoing activity on the Watch App. Overall really just a gimmick to me, never really used that on my watch because a) the Garmin has a proper map build in that show me where I have been and since I have my phone with me anyway, that thing has way better map features anyway. If I get lost in a new area, I simply plan a route in Komoot to a new destination starting from my current position and send the route to my Garmin.
Overall, to me it sounds more like Apple is playing catch up with what others offer for a while now and building 1st party alternatives to what 3rd party apps can do anyway on watches. Even the dual GPS thing is only noteworthy because not too many others have that implemented yet, but it´s pretty much a given that this newer tech will be coming in pretty much anything in the future.

I got my Ultra yesterday and immediately went on a MTB ride. Almost none of the ultra features improve the biking experience over a series 8 besides dual gps and maybe the emergency siren. You will still need to use a bike computer if you want to use power and have active speed displayed in a useful way.
For me, the Apple Watch is more important for non-cycling stats that are relevant to my training. Workout data like yoga and strength training, and now recovery with sleep monitoring.
The ultra is really appealing for two reasons over a series 8. It looks great and it gets roughly 3 days battery life. If as a cyclist neither of those things are relevant stick with a series 8.

Integrates into the architecture perfectly. Wish it had a better integration with Trail Forks so it could give you turn by turn haptics. Also "Outdoor Cycle" doesn't cut it. Needs to be "MTB Ride" showing all the stats. I love the Garmin Epix but was affraid it might not integrate as well at the Apple product.

What you just described in this video van be easily done by many Polar, Garmin, Coros and Suunto for much less money. Just as an example, the Polar Grit X Pro Titan is around $400, has the same Titanium body + Sapphire display and rugged build, has the same back track feature, can lock the display so you don't click the buttons by accident as well, has real long battery life during a GPS activity (the 60 hours of the AW is not available yet and the total they can last without it it's not even a third of that) and to be honest, any sport watch is accurate enough even in the middle of the mountains. The metrics are way better and Fuel wise from polar is a huge plus during long rides, and it's actually *half the price* of the Apple Watch Ultra, having only cash detection and the siren missing which again is offered by Garmin for actually lower prices once again, say about $200 less with the same advantages from Polar.

@@GhostFishSlayer no, they can't, but do you really go perform the target sports for this device without a phone? At least in my case, I don't see myself doing so, specially considering the battery on a GPS activity, best case scenario, is around 16 hours when it is brand new.
Now assuming there's a market of people having an iPhone, doing outdoors activities comfortable with going outdoors without a phone and relying on a device with less of a day on a charge as their only connection with the world sounds very niche to me

Apple user here, currently own a series 6 watch. One thing I can say is if you're using the GPS features of your watch, don't expect the battery life to be anything near that 60hrs shown in this video. It won't even be close. I expect it will be better than the ~4 hrs you get on a Series 6, but definitely nothing remotely close to 60. If you're expecting to use the GPS on the watch frequently or for extended periods, be ready to charge it at least a couple times over the course of a day, and know that if you're camping and riding trails, that 60 hrs definitely won't work out into 2+ days of use on a single charge if you're using the GPS features.

I have been wearing a series 6 for the past two seasons primarily as a safety device. I have it for emergency calls and crash detection, reliably monitoring my heart rate and location tracking. However, I really wish it was Trailforks compatible and had more features specific to MTB. For my size, I found the watch too small; especially with gloves on so I have ordered an Ultra to try. I am hoping that their more outdoor-focused direction that will help spawn some MTB-specific apps that will really take advantage of the new features.

Ah good old APPLE , once again trying to play catch up. Taking someone else's perfected product and passing it off as there own. While charging stupid prices, 800 US when I can have a Garmin or Suuunto for way less.
I will give you one thing the fall and crash detection is cool but charging you 800 US for it is outright robbery. Plus a data plan for it to work unless you have your phone paired to it.

Like most riders I use the outdoor cycling on the Apple Watch when I ride and my phone for everything else. IMHO these are all hyped up marketing features that everyday average riders probably will never use and at a ridiculously high price. Why can’t apple just add a mountain biking workout option and play nice with trail forks.

Unless you're eskimo joe or scuba steve, this watch has zero differences in functionality from a Series 8.
That said, I use APPLE for everything (laptops, ipads, iphones, appletv etc) and have for 15 years. But never considered an apple watch because they're inferior to any Garmin Fenix made. Native topomaps, GPX upload, courses, dual band satellite options (GPS, GLONASS, Gallileo and MULTI) as well as all the O2, Heart Rate...This watch, in some ways, is about 10 years behind in terms of functionality that a bike rider is going to want on a watch i mean way points? That's not even evolutionary. That's been table stakes for YEARS. And the battery life. Its Cute to see the Apple Watch people bust a nut on 2.5 days. I charge my Fenix once every 7 - 9 days. Their devices (like, all of them) dont even support ANT+ for one thing.

I’m probably not going to buy one, but it looks likes a great watch. That said, it is pretty tiring to see the “it’s revolutionary because it has an apple logo” cycle go around again. It shows promise, absolutely. But as it stands today, as a watch for outdoor activity, it’s just plain worse than what’s already on the market from the established players in the space. Full stop.
Now as a fantastic every day watch that you can also take biking, sure. Honestly, it seems like the clear choice. But if it’s biking/hiking/swimming/whatever *first* and everyday second, I can’t see why you would pick an Apple Watch given the other options at or even well below that price point.
