The cycling display is a very good first step, but hopefully Apple will improve on a few basic usability issues. It would be great to be able to do everything from the iPhone and not even have to touch the watch. That way, one could lock the Apple Watch touch screen prior to the ride and be done with it. Also, most people seem to prefer the screen with the speedometer, so why is that screen number 5, and why do we have to swipe over to it every ride? We should be able to choose a default, or at least have it return to the last used screen.

Agree completely about the 3 items. Mapping and routing omission is crazy. All of the functions are there. They just need integrating. Regarding radar, I've been using it for years due to hearing difficulties. I have to now decide whether to monitor my brilliant Garmin RCT715 on the Garmin app or look at the mirrored watch workout display. The radar overlay and mapping/routing are the main things I miss about the Garmin Edge - but I still wouldn't go back. Climb information was entertaining but not so critical to me.

Very nice post, Matt. Until Apple hopefully supports bicycle radar, I'll leave my Bryton app (Garmin app) running in the background, which gives me an acoustic alert when a vehicle approaches from behind. In any case, it would be a nice addition to the training app. I'm also eagerly awaiting the mountain details. Have fun practicing sports 😊

Hi, I’ve just bought my first AppleWatch. I do a fare bit of easy Mountain biking. I notice that the data reflected on my iPhone seems to average speed over a long period. For example I can stop, then start riding again and it takes 40-50 meters before a speed is registered and much further before the listed speed is about right. Equally, on a ride that involves many short uphills and downhills the speed listed on the iPhone can be slowing down after I have crested the hill and am accelerating down hill. Also the Heart Rate monitor is slower to react and requires much longer than my previous Polar before it registers a HR increase. Eg I can go up a 40 vertical meter rise and the Apple Watch doesn’t register a heart rate increase until way past the peak, where=-as my Polar gives realtime heart rate.

I’ve been riding for a few weeks with my Ultra 2 and Garmin 1030 both collecting data. The data is comparable with respect to heart rate (Garmin HRM vs. the Ultra), time and distance. I don’t have the pedals, cadence or speed sensor paired with the Ultra, but the end wattage is off by 10 to 15 watts with the Garmin being higher. The Ultra 2 will periodically create laps for some unknown reason.
I agree with you 100% on the radar support. I don’t ride without that unit. The Apple also doesn’t support the Garmin integrated headlight and I’m not sure if the pedals can even be paired.
And as you mentioned, the climb information is pretty useful, especially when I want to pick a route that will get my wattage up for that ride.
My Garmin setup just plain works. Battery life is great and I don’t feel guilty sweating profusely all over the display. 😂

Apparently you can just connect your phone to the Garmin Varia RTL515 or The Wahoo ELEMNT RIVAL to get notifications when a car is behind you. You get a really cool visual, as well as audio notification that represents cars coming up behind you and how many they are and how fast they’re coming. I guess you don’t need a cycling computer for that. I might consider one of these but they’re not cheap at around 100 or $200.

I have used both Apple and Garmin devices to track my cycling activities. The #1 problem I see with Apple is having your phone mounted to your bike absorbing all the vibrations and at a big risk of braking if you happen to fall--your phone is more important and expensive than any cycling computer.
The 2nd issue is battery. Apple watches need to be charged daily and if you use your phone as a cycling computer and/or GPS device, you'll drain half the battery on a single ride. At least that's my experience and that's why I switched to Garmin.
The best from Apple is that you can just use your current phone and watch instead of buying specific equipment.

Could never get away from Garmin's ecosystem because my training requires relatively spot-on GPS accuracy. Wanted the smartwatch features of Apple for years, but without capability to connect to BT devices, and utilize power meter metrics, I continued upgrading through the Epix2 until AWU2 announced. I'm a month in, and many rides, including some over 60 miles, and cannot see a reason to go back to Garmin. I’ve used Garmin devices (Forerunners, Tactix, Fenix, and now the new Epix Pro ) for many years and am very used to all the data Garmin Connect generates. I’m having fun with the AWU2, and have added a few of the suggested apps, such as WorkOutDoors and Athlytic. I do wish the Watch collected more data, though, similar to Garmin Connect. Also, as you mentioned, the screen technology is not as advanced as Garmin’s. I use Garmin motorcycle GPS devices, and they work flawlessly in inclement weather conditions, and even work with thick leather gloves. I like the overall functionality of the AWU2 and will keep it, but likely also continue to wear the Epix Pro in order to keep the Garmin Connect data up to date. I think that this set up is great for cycling in the fact that most people bring their phone with them on a ride. And if you have an Apple Watch , you're more than likely wearing it most of the time. So the heart rate monitors, and cycling computers , become useless weight when on a ride. I'm currently using this setup, and it provides more than enough data between the two devices while on the ride, and after when checking the metrics. The things that's amazing about this, is that I was cycling with an Apple Watch SE and of course I was bring my iPhone XR. It's just not automatic which makes it a bit frustrating.

Do you ride with it on your wrist or mounted to the bike? To me it seems like a serious advantage to have your navigation and other data where you need it without having to let go of the handles. If you mount to the bars you will not get heart rate (not from the watch anyway). I have both an old Wahoo Bolt and an AWU2 and I imagine I will continue riding with the Bolt but perhaps I am missing something.

I wear it on my wrist. If you are using maps, it’ll give you that haptic buzz when turns are coming up. But I prefer a cycling computer on my handle in addition to the watch. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

I have a Garmin cadence sensor 2 that as expected was easy to set up and pair with my Apple watch ultra 2. Function was also as expected…EXCEPT…when you stop pedaling and the sensor continues to average thus creating an average cadence number that is basically useless. Garmin cadence sensors/Edge computers used to do the same thing but have long ago been adjusted to average only while pedaling. Don’t know if Apple or Garmin needs to address this or if someone has an alternative solution…

    Great coverage.
I only recently got into (kick) biking after years of being an ultramarathon enthusiast. I have owned 3 Garmin watches and now the Apple Watch Series 8. I've had the Apple Watch for less than a year and it is definitely missing some of the functionality I am used to from Garmin. However, I am also tired of "gas'ing" and I feel like Garmin forces me into more purchase updates than Apple does.
I purchased a Quad Lock and plan to use that for my iPhone on my kick bike. For battery life, I have plenty of portable batteries, so I can toss one in a weatherproof bar bag (or my bar mitts as winter is approaching) which should help with battery life on longer tours.
Then, I can run navigation in parallel with the Apple fitness app. Sure I have to switch between screens, but I can at least monitor my pace, heart rate (I use a Bluetooth HRM strap from Garmin that connects to the watch) and get turn-by-turn navigation to both my watch and phone.

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  7 місяців тому

Not that I'm aware of. You could use the normal maps app on the watch to generate turn by turn directions. I've done that pretty often and it works ok.
I think the Strava WatchOS app just relays the activity tracker from your phone from what I can tell. Strava can import activities from the health app on your phone but to me it doesn't feel as simple and automatic as the way a Garmin would integrate with Strava.

I must say I am disappointed with Apple with respect to tracking sports such as running and cycling. It was announced as something huge by Apple but it is just below market standard. If you want to have full access to the data and want to have specific metrics and analysis then you might need to consider switching to Garmin.
I miss for instance the ability to see and hear plot all available data. For example, I have some powermeters in both pedals. Therefore, I would be able to see the power readings for both legs. However, Apple does not allow to do that in order to identify any imbalances between the legs. Also the revolution speed is tracked by the powermeters but again Apple is not allowing to access this.
