- After nearly 60 years on TV, stage and in films, Emmy- and Tony-winning actor Judd Hirsch has perfected the art of turning the Everyman into someone extraordinary. The kid from New York who starred in "Taxi" has now, at 87, earned his second Oscar nomination, for Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans." Hirsch talks with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz about bringing his own past, and a childlike fascination, to the role.

*Judd is 87 years of age but doesn’t look a day over 60. Blessed.*
He looks better than he did in independence day 3 decades back.
He looks quite healthy but "not a day over 60" is ridiculously hyperbolic. He looks maybe 75.
Sometime in the 1980s, when I was working for Columbia Pictures, Mr. Hirsch was invited to one of our premiere red carpet events - complete with hoards of fans, camera and tv news people and lots of glitz. He didn't have his series any longer and hadn't been in anything notable for a while. It think it may have been the Tootsie premiere - can't remember. Anyway, the media folks had been going crazy for one celebrity after another. However, when the Mr. Hirsch arrived, to the press it was like he was invisible. He looked at them looking at other celebrities, smiled to himself and walked into the screening like the gentleman I believe him to be.
Great story. it fits who I think Judd Hirsch is to the core. NOT flash and glitter but heart and soul.
You can tell that man has never "worked" a day in his life, he looks 25 years younger than he is. Boy, I enjoy seeing people who've lived a life they were meant to live. Too many people, myself included, trudge through life embracing the moments we have instead of living a life that's a constant "moment". Good for him!
Good for him that he can afford plastic surgery
envy is an unattractive feeling
I've worked hard, more so I have been left with nothing but my humble ethics. I have always smiled and encouraged others, giving my last dollar saying I had ten more in my pocket. Still working hard because I fid it hard to find good work. I am old, still climbing on roof, still helping neighbors who have no idea, still building in the hot TX sun. I may not look old, but I do in my eyes, and misinterpreted by many as comfortable. But there is no one in my community that can hang with me, even if just my 3 mile lawn tracked mowing every week. Not sure about him, but don't project, and I live comfortably now.
I made the same comment about how he looks. 🙂
@@TM-yn4iu you are a poet! That was so beautifully written, I feel the sting of tears in my eyes. Please, nurture that talent, don't let it go to waste, my friend! 😌
Love this man. He should have won the Oscar for Ordinary People. That performance made my cry. I hope he wins this time!
Agreed!
Agreed! And Donald Sutherland should have been nominated and won best actor..
That was one of the biggest Oscar snubs in the history of film. Donald Sutherland never received the respect he deserved.
He looks FANTASTIC for his age!
Fabulous at 87!
Mr. Hirsch was missed in Ordinary People, for his Oscar. He is a graceful and deeply intelligent actor.
I really enjoyed hearing him. He is simply the best!
He, with others, was central to Ordinary People, one of the MOST EXCEPTIONAL MOVIES I have ever seen. It was SO REAL!!!
I LOVE this man's work. What a career, and Judd Hirsch looks amazing. Great interview.
He deserves an Oscar.
He derseves more recognition but an Oscar doesn't really mean anything. He makes the big bucks and it affords him to do what he likes. There's a lot of people who don't get awards who do much harder jobs. And they don't make millions.
Taxi one of my fav shows ever and wow he’s aged amazingly! Seems like great guy also
This was an amazing profile. I'm such a super fan - loved his work as Alex on Taxi and in Ordinary People. He's great in both drama and comedy, which isn't easy. People made a big deal about Latka on Taxi - and it was a fun character and Andy Kaufman was special - but Alex was the deeper, more realistic character. He's right; you have to follow your heart in life.
Thanks CBS!
I Loved Judd in Running On Empty With River Phoenix And Christine Lahti. Great Great Movie.
Recently rewatched it. Not a great film, just decent, but you could see River Phoenix's star quality. What a waste. As for Hirsch's character, I had not previously realized how selfish he is, which is the irony given that the character was supposed to care so much about the world. Christine Lahti was the standout in that film.
What a spectacular guy and actor!
Hirsch also starred in the short-lived TV cop show "Delvecchio" in the 70s pre-Taxi fame, co-starring Hill Street Blues anchors Michael Conrad & Charles Haid. Others from this CBS series who made the jump to "Blues" were George Wyner, James B. Sikking & writer/co-creator Steven Bochco.
Love this interview. Best wishes for the Oscar!!
Is Judd still single?
he deserves the Oscar for 'The Fabelmans"!!..
What about Brendan Frasier?
I hope Judd Hirsch wins an Oscar next month. The Fabelmans is a great movie.
My favorite Judd Hirsch movie role: Julius Levinson in Independence Day.
That's the film Steven Spielberg noted on why he picked Judd. 🙂
Without a Trace is the best movie ever… an amazing performance by an amazing actor. How can Mr. Hirsch’s performance at the end not make you cry???
One of my favorite actors ever
Always enjoyed his work, will watch anything he's part of.
I have admired MR. JUDD HIRSCH since 1984 when he played Detective Al Manetti in the movie WITHOUT A TRACE. I still love this movie and his performance in it. I was elated when he was nominated for a supporting actor OSCAR in THE FABELMANS, and I have high hopes that he will win. He is a living legend and so deserving of this accolade. My finger's are crossed. Amazing that he look's 👀 so youthful for his age. 😲 👏 👏 👏 👏 ❤ 👏👏 👏 👏 🌟
I 💕 Judd Hirsch!😭🤗🤗❤️❤️🥰🥰
Great story! ❤️
Judd Hirsch is a real good actor, Keep going Judd
In my dream scenario, Timothy Hutton wins Best Actor for Ordinary People and Judd Hirsch & Donald Sutherland tie for Best Supporting Actor. That film was spellbinding.
Hello
One of the great ones!!!
Thank you sir!
My parents divorced when I was two, so I understand Hirsch very much. Chaos.
What a rags to riches story. Love it!!!
His role in Ordinary People was brilliant.
I think he’s become the character in the show Forever ,where he played the son of the main character . What great genes he must have ! He was always SO good in everything I’ve ever seen him act in . I hope he lives to 100 and works til the day he dies. I enjoy his acting
I love judd Hirsch since taxi ordinary people and everything else. I hope he wins.
Hello Yvonne
How are you doing today?
Glad that Judd Hirsch is still in the industry. In 1981 or 1982, I would see him in the Bla Bla Bla nightclub Cafe in Studio City. The singer Carl Anderson was the performer.
Judd is a Great Actor.
Amazing!
He was excellent in "without a trace" in the early 80's!
Don’t forget Judd for the Defense ❤🎉
That was Carl Betz! :)
Don't forget the amazing role he played in sharknado 2.
Did you guys happen to run into *The Warriors?*
What a good good Actor.
I enjoyed the movie and his performance. It was nice to see a film about a Jewish American family that didn’t traffic in the same old stereotypes and cliches of who Jewish people are.
Amazing man!!
Agreed, The Fabelmans was less than riveting, with the exception of Hirsch who portrayed his character with zest & a great flair for the dramatic!
Had not known that he had studied engineering. Good for him. What sort of engineering? The sciences and engineering mindsets might help a person to filter out the humdrum BS --- which often makes you socially unpopular --- that's life. Liked his various performances. Liked him a lot in 'Numb3rs.' Caught on in that first episode that the show was going to be about Set Theory. That was my favorite topic during my undergrad in Mathematics. Them were the days.
Numb3rs was a great show.
Love.
He understands the secret to acting. Don't act. Just BE the character you're portraying. Find the thing that breathes life into that character, whomever that is and then you're there. This is how excellence is achieved in acting. There are only a handful of actors in the business who can bring this to their work. Judd was robbed of the Oscar for his role in Ordinary People. I hope he isn't this time for The Fableman's.
Bravo to him walking away from engineering degree.
My mom always thought he was so cute!!
Awwww, that's sweet. He has always played the sensitive type -- kind of like Alan Alda and women (this one included) like that.
When I was little I didn’t think he was attractive at all, then fast forward to present day and I think he was pretty cute in Taxi.
@@nanlev613 I kind of thought the same thing 😂
I noticed it when he smiled!!
Independence Day.
I remember him in Ordinary People -
I am really hoping he wins the Oscar for Fabelmans. I like Key Huy Quan though but Key has a lot of years to be be nominated. Judd has been working hard in many projects and even won 2 Tonys and 2 Emmys. if wins the Oscar.. He would be 25th Triple Crown of Acting winner that should have been Glenn Close shot in 2018 for the Wife also the 10th actor.. He would also be he Oldest competitive Oscar winner in the Acting category.. wow!
Never knew who Judd Hirsch was, until his appearances on ABC’s “The Goldbergs”.
Love Judd.
04:35; note to the closed caption person: it says 'asian', when it should say 'agent'.
Has he followed the same diet and exercise regimen as Lowe/Bacon/Springsteen/RDJ, because he looks better now than he did 35 years ago! Seriously! He doesn't look his age, he does not move like someone his age. He looks very handsome.
Judd Hirsch is 87?!?!?
The movie was self indulgent rubbish but he was great. Good luck (went to Coney when I lived there - summer kids dancing to Sympathy For The Devil, great)!
A seven minute piece on a guy who's only in the movie for like ten seconds? Why?
He and David Lynch had brief cameos but turned in the films best performances . Michelle Williams was wildly miscast and ironically, poorly directed; Paul Dano gave a one note performance; and Jeannie Berlin was also under-utilized. Spielberg spent way too much time with “Uncle Benny” and the anti-Semitic bully, when Judd Hirsch, David Lynch and Jeannie Berlin played the most interesting characters and gave the films best performances. To me, The Fablemans was a huge disappointment . Not bad, but it could have been so much better.
