- Monitor Valley, Nevada... What's it named after? A lizard? One of those teachers in school who told you not to run in the hallways? Nope, check out the cool thing that we saw in the beautuful Monitor Valley! Looking for a place to overland or boondock? This could also be the place you're looking for. Plus we visit the ghost town of Belmont, Nevada, Diana's Punchbowl (Devil's Cauldron) and end up in a really nice camping spot.

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If you're into being off-grid and boondocking or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

Enjoyed the historical narration that Linda did here. Thanks for the tour of that ghost town.
Thanks! Aloha....Linda
Great video. The “Monitor” photo overlay was Phenomenally done! Thanks for showing me things I’d never see otherwise.
Thanks for coming along, David. BTW, I mailed your sticker out a couple of days ago from Wisdom, MT. Hope you get it ok.
@@gonagain I’m sure it’ll arrive soon. Thank you !
Received today. Great artwork! Thank you.
Another great video you two. Thank you for taking us along. Love that you don't impose background music on your videos, allowing your audience to take in the peacefulness of your destinations. Safe travels.
Hot tip for the day: "You just gotta know which dirt road to get on." Your channel shows how important it is to be able to drive off pavement and camp sustainably.
Linda reading about the building history was cool.
I was with the Group of history buffs that set the Nevada shaped plaque in the front of the Courthouse, we had around 600 members and we stayed at the campground outside of town there. It was a great weekend
That's a nice plaque you guys put there. I should have included it in the video.
As Bill Engvall would say, Here’s Your Sign!
ALWAYS a good time! thank you ALL stay safe
I enjoyed this episode and am looking forward to being at places like that. We'll be hitting the road again soon.
Thats great to hear, Seymour. Safe travels to you!
Kind of reminded me of horse drawn couches like they were in the cowboy era that they would go from town to town traveling the roads…😊
👍👍👍👍👍
I was at the Pine Creek camp ground in July. It's a nice camp ground. Yeah there were people there, very remote.
Yall are looking healthy and happy. Thanks for your videos see you around!!!
I loved this one. Desolate. Beautiful.
It does look like that water is boiling. 200 degrees is pretty darn hot. That's very cool to see! Belmont is awesome! That's right up my alley of things to visit. You guys are always finding stuff I like. We need to do the 'keep dust out' thing. We always end up with dust in our cargo camper. Then I'm cleaning it for weeks lol. That's a great stopping spot! Our kind of campsite right there!!! Very nice!
You'd love cruising these areas.
We recently came across your channel. We're hooked! Something great to binge-watch through the long BC winter. Thanks for sharing your journeys!
Thanks for watching, RB.
Good morning! You guys sure found a beautiful place to camp! Always enjoy the history you share. Enjoy your weekend!
Very nice Nevada back country...my type of exploration
I f’n love watching you two in your ventures!
What a neat area with so much history. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.
I think that is one of the most far out there places I have seen. Man, you have for sure better have some extra gas with you. It takes real adventure spirit to go to a place like that. You sure have a change to get some fresh air out there. Wonder how many people live in that town or does anyone live there. Great video my friend.
It was pretty far out in miles and as in, "far out, man". That hill made you think you were on another planet!
We just love the way you present the information about the places you visit. Rick reminds me of my dad whom we lost last year. Listening to him is like having dad around again. He also loved to collect a lot of information about history and historical places. Linda, well, she feels like someone you've known your whole life even though you've never met her. Maybe one day, when we get to hit the road full-time we'll get a chance to run into you on some backroad somewhere and have a chat about the simple things in life. Because we look forward to getting lost in the less explored places, also. We've been watching you since you had your first 1000 subscribers and have loved to see your channel grow. Keep the great videos coming!
Than you guys for sticking with us for so long! Our channel keeps evolving, and hopefully it's getting better, as we go on, and we have no intentions of stopping any time soon, so there's a good chance we could meet you someday! That would be nice.
@@gonagain Classy response.
From a neighbor in Wyo
That Diana's Punchbowl is very neat! I lived in Nevada for many years and never heard of that. I was pretty well traveled too. lol We had a jeep and when all over the place, off road and on the dirt roads too. There is a LOT to see in Nevada!
Have seen several other YT vids on this feature but you're the first to show me the Monitor, thanks - recent earthquake in Mexico City had water sloshing in cauldren - there is a little 'fish' that lives down there and only place in world
Wow 😮 about fish living in that environment
Now that's interesting!
I believe those are the pupfish living in the small (but deep) cave-like hole in Death Valley Natl Mon. They can stand water in the 90 degrees F range but to my knowledge nothing lives in that simmering hot blue water in Diana's Punchbowl.
Love The Adventure.
That grader was most likely horse or mule powered. I would think steam tractors were pretty rare in that desert country. The forest road looked smoother! Thanks for another explore!
Thanks again for another high desert video, this one is really close to my area of Nevada. Wind and dust are almost a given in this area.
you guys have made me want to explore Nevada
We love exploring Nevada! And stay out of Vegas unless it's to eat some Hawaiian food.
Nice camping spot. That Devil Hole was interesting.
That dust is being kicked up by a roadrunner! You can just make out the coyote behind it.
Haha, yup!
Very nice beautiful wide open spaces and well preserved ghost towns. Caldron was cool and to see a warm water clear stream in such a dry arid place was eden like. Would make for a good 'monitor' screen saver 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for going to the bowl. It is amazing! I would never be able to go there. I love it
I sure enjoy your adventures and always look forward to seeing them.
What a trip!! ❤❤
Another stunning video and eventual item for our bucket list.
Great video! Y’all find the most interesting places to visit! I hope you both are well. Safe travels!
great video, rick.. i love exploring old builds and things.. the history, about how it was built, the people building it..why was it built for..etc.. awesome !.. thanks, ruck n linda..
..Gypsy J van .
Thanks for watching, Jerry!
Another great video. Love the combination of natural features, mining towns, and whatever you happen to come across. Thank you so much for sharing these adventures with us. Be well.
Glad you enjoyed it, Ann, thanks.
Really enjoyed this video. I did my master's thesis in geology in the Toquima Range, used to drive through Belmont regularly. The old miners' cabins were just beginning to be refurbished as a vacation homes then (early 80s) and spent considerable time in the Monitor Valley and Big (or was it Great?) Smoky Valley. Went into Austin or Eureka for supplies every week or so, or down to Tonopah to ship my samples back to the university and get the truck repaired. I often camped at the petroglyph cave (even camped inside it, no fence then) and the mouth of Ike's Canyon, which you passed on the way south to Diana's Punchbowl. There are several hot springs in the area, and a hot soak felt really really good after a long day hiking and mapping and sample collecting and backpacking the samples to camp, then fall asleep dead tired looking up at the stars. If there was a Pine Camp at the time I was unaware of it. Thanks to you and Linda for the updated tour!
I'm certainly impressed by your lifestyle and I would actually love to spend more time in that area myself. Linda and I head to Nevada every chance we get.
Thanks for Sharing U 2 learning is a Great thing through your travels Thank you .
Nice 👍
Thanks!
I live here in NV and you both have seen more of it than I have in the 6 years I’ve lived here.
You live in a nice place, but you might never know it if you were just heading down the highway. The first time we traveled through Nevada, on highway 50, I'd see dust plumes from some vehicle heading across the desert and I'd wonder when they were going to.
Thank you for the video. Be safe.
Good stuff!👍🏻
Thanks for the video. Having someone to share your adventure with a plus. Enjoy!
Yeah, she's a keeper.
Thanks for taking us along for the adventure. That punch bowl was something. I’d hate to be driving near it in the dark. LOL
Very nice video
Always love your adventures!!!🤙🏻✌🏻
I forgot to mention that you have inspired me to add a 6x10 cargo trailer to my off-road part-time nomad adventures as well. Just picked it up a couple weeks ago in AZ on a three week trek. Thanks for all your wisdom!!! 🤙🏻✌🏻
I think I would be terrified on those roads nobody out there no highway signs no street signs it's desert so there's not a lot for landmarks
I live in Nevada, we have to drive a hundred miles just to visit the neighbors lol
It's very peaceful, freeing to be out there but that's if you have good tires and vehicles is in good shape
That's Nevada
Used to work out there. Seems to me I recall the Monitor Valley is about 85 miles long and has only two ranches in it. Travel with plenty of fuel and water.
@@meanders9221 interesting thank you for sharing that little bit of info
Very interesting places you visited . Nevada has it own spectacular beauty , all alone under the wide open sky . Enjoyed it very much .
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you, that was quite interesting.
I had never seen the Monitor in Monitor Valley! Thank you for pointing it out. Now I know what to look for.
Diana’s Punchbowl is especially picturesque at the crack of dawn, when steam is rising out of it.
(I was surprised that the gate was open. That’s all private ranch land.)
Thanks for showing people the beauty of real Nevada!
Your videos get better and better! I'm all caught up now lol
This was a great video. I love when you go out into the backcountry and explore places that are so far off the beaten path, most people would probably just drive right by. There was one point when you were at the top of the cauldron looking around and it looked as if you had the whole state of Nevada to yourself. What up peaceful moment to have.
Love your videos
You don't do too bad yourself!
Very good video thank you
Thanks for watching, Wes! See you on the next one.
Looked like a nice drive. Nice to see Linda doing so much, hope she has healed up well. Stay safe and healthy.
Thanks, Badger. Linda's ankle is about back to normal, the broken bones healed up right away. It's the range of motion in her foot that is almost back to normal.
Interesting places
I really enjoy your trips.
Thank you, Jack. We appreciate you watching our videos.
Really great video you two. Looked like a full day of adventure. Rick, you said you jumped when that loud mine sound started. I can tell you I jumped also just from watching the video. As always, stay safe on you travels and I am looking forward to your next one. G
Thank you!
Thanks for letting me hang out with y'all today-this was fun. Aloha 👋
Thanks for stopping by!
Very neat looking geographic looking oddity! Thanks for sharing Rick& Linda ! 👍😁 Sorry about the bent leaf !
Thanks Ralph, it's all repaired now.
Hello Rick and Linda hope all is well with you all. Nice video I was so into watching and learning that I didn't stop to comment. I do have a few things to tell you one is about your truck you were talking about maybe getting a new one but let me tell you a story first I have a friend well a few but this one went and payed 89,000,00 now he said he got it in 2020 I have seen photos of it and it looked sharp but it was in the shop 27 days after he got it and he had a lawyer trying to get his money back after 11 months of not having the truck because when he would go to pick it up it did the same things it did when he turned it in the first time so he say's he has had it for just over a year it has 2800 miles on it now and he only put 400 miles on it the rest is from the shop test driving it.. Well I talked to him last night and he is getting his money back but they wanted to give him another truck and he said no. So when he called me and asked what I had to put in mine when I redid it I told him 10,237.00 and it lasted from 2007 till it got rear ended 2 years ago. So he is going to take his old truck that he has on the farm and fix it up like I did mine now he'll end up paying more because he will have to get it painted but that's just him. He said the same trucks plus newer one were in the shop with his and they are still there as well. Trouble getting the part's and people to work on them that know what their doing so when I hang up with him I figure I would pass that along incase your still thinking about a new truck. My friend Frank has a shop here close to me and every time I go shot the bull with him he is packed with newer trucks and cars from the past 4 to 5 years and he's thinking about not working on them and staying with the older car's and truck's because he can get the part's for them un like the newer one's Just something to think about. Stay safe and take care.
Sage advice!
@@movingtargetschannel Thank you. Everyone I know with a newer car or truck still have their old car or truck just incase the new one has to go into the shop My nephew went ahead and took another new truck and it had the same trouble the first one had and he ended up selling it and went back to his old one I was a mechanic and engine builder for about 48 years and still have most of my tools so I still work on my own stuff because I have fired a lot of so called mechanic's over the years and I think a good Mac is getting harder to find. I will say most of the trouble is electronic on the newer stuff but what good are they if you and they can't get the part's I have another 1990 GMC PU that I am thinking of rebuilding I am just waiting to see if I can find one that doesn't have 25,000.00 of things the need replacing but if I don't find a better one this will be it. Take care and stay safe.
We hear you on that and we've pretty much committed ourselves to keeping this 2002 Yukon. I rebuilt the front end a couple of years ago and the car doesn't have any rust. It runs strong, but leaks out of the rear main a bit.
@@gonagain The big factor is the price of the new vehicles today and what we get for our money and then knowing what the old one has been through and how well it was taken care of On my old 1990 I replaced the engine trans U joints brakes and brake control valve all 4 shocks radiator water pump and Alt head lights because my old ones were all yellowed and getting hard to see at night. 5 tires Miscellaneous bushings and the use for the lift for 3 day's from a friend of mine and he cut me a good deal by letting me do it in the week he was closed between Christmas and New years plus he came in and helped two days The day after the truck came out of the shop I took it home and the next morning I took it from Jemison Alabama to Albuquerque New Mexico to see an old army buddy. There and back and not one bit of trouble and 20 MPG with about 600 miles to the tank 30 gallon tank my first stop for fuel was Sellisaw OK I was never sorry I did it even my wife came around to seeing I was right she wanted me to get a new truck but I couldn't see spending 30 grand for the junk I looked at. Yeah the new stuff was all shiny and mine needed a paint job but it was mine and I miss it 30 years with that truck and I worked the heck out of it when I had my shop. Take care and stay safe Rick and Linda.
Cool sites.
Thanks Michael!
Been missing your channel. Had to look you up. Don’t know why I didn’t get your episode. I have fully subscribed and been watching your channel for many years.
Anyway glad to hear and see you haven’t stopped your channel. Many blessings and Happy Trails !! Michelle from Tallhassee Fl
Hello Michelle and welcome back, we remember you. Click on the "Notification Bell" to see if that helps.
the land and water are still radioactive
Off road tip, move left or right of the main tire tracks and you will find much less wash boarding. For us we have had times where you get right next to the shoulder for a smother ride.
I hear ya, but sometimes the whole road is a mess. We've been on roads where 5mph was too fast!
@@gonagain At that point drop the trans into granny and relax.
Thanks for sharing these places, I'll. Most likely never get there myself
Well, you never know, Vester, you just might one day. Thanks for coming along with us.
Linda, Thank you for reading the history. Really appreciated. My husband did a property evaluation there in 1972 . The u joint went out on his truck and had to walk into Belmont to borrow some tools to repair. AHHH the life of a geologist. Again thank you for your adventures and beautiful Nevada. Stay safe and keep on trucking around the next bend in the road.
Thanks, Lynne, I appreciated hearing about his adventure.
👍🏻👍🏻
I drilled a lot of holes looking for gold all over Nevada Thanks for sharing your travels
Did ya find any? Thanks for watching!
@@gonagain Yes we did drilled the holes that found many of the larger active mines in nevada
Just came across your video! Just great! Im to do some research and check these places out! 😊
As you probably already know, make sure you have lots of water and gas as thse places are far from anywhere. You're going to love it--do your research!
I heard ya at the 4 min. Mark 👍😉.... Yall two take care ✌
Lol!
💯❤️💯❤️💯❤️💯❤️💯❤️
Thank you!
Tonopah! Look in on WCR Dalton. That hole in the ground reminds me of The Diamond Craters near Burns, OR.
It was really something to see!
Really enjoyed the video. My friends and I did a dual sport motorcycle ride from Gabbs to Eureka and back. We stayed overnight twice at the Belmont Inn B&B, but it looks closed now. Not much fuel in that part of Nevada, gassed up at Carver's but still had to carry extra fuel to make it to Eureka.(no fuel in Belmont) Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park is worth a detour to see.
You had a nice trip! Yes, gas can be scarce in Nevada, and we always plan very carefully. Thanks for the tip about Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park.
Wow I was just hunting Reece valley, two valleys over.. I actually put in for that area two but got the area west of monitor valley... I've heard about Diana's punch bowl and want to check it out some day
You should, it's pretty impressive!
Another great video. You know what would be cool? If you'd show a little map inlay of where you are at any time. Maybe a quick pop up when you tell us where you are. If it's not a hard thing to do.
Hi Mike, I was doing that for awhile and I somehow got out of the habit. I'll start it again because it's a good idea.
Opportunity knocks. Lower a basket of eggs into the cauldron
You know, Linda thought about it!
@@gonagain Onsen eggs!
There is a nice free camp ground 3 miles south of Belmont. You should stay there.
We went through it and you're right, it's very nice. But it was in the 90s and we were seeking someplace higher up. We did find a nice spot above Manhattan, NV.
horses drew that
That's a shame about the cattle ruining the hot springs.
Don't blame the cattle too much it's was an unbearably scorching summer, no shade they probably on their last legs to get to water after months of nothing to graze on... hey One can put a piece of duct tape, electricians tape over key hole... we've done it to keep ice and snow out.. You both are very wise travelers, it's an honor to watch. These were cool attractions. We drove 270 miles once to see a "mountain" in shape of a turtle. When we got there we saw it was about the size of a tv (and that was in the 70's).But things look different in the desert, and if you laid down on ground at right angle it did look like a turtle mountain ! One thing we forgot ? Rattle snakes. they were probably thinking why are those east coast people laying 🐍 in the sand near us for???? Safe explorations, Laugh often
Love your story, thanks!
Wow, that was exciting and interesting to see! Thank you for sharing your adventures! How do you handle the fuel situation, if I may ask. Sorry for the dumb question.
It's not a dumb question at all, Lisa. We don't carry extra fuel and, in places like that we top off every chance we get, even if we're only down a couple of gallons. Before we head down some lonesome road, we always check how long it is first.
@@gonagain Good to know. Thank you!
Another good video, caldron scary looking! What are you running for tires on your vehicle?
BF Goodrich KO2's.
Is that the Diana's punch bowl
Yes, it is!
Great video. Isn't the United States wonderful. How are you doing keeping the dust off the e bike hanging off the back ?
I'm trying out the lunch sack method now and it seems to work. Also, on this trip i have a smaller magicycle ebike along.
Fun and interesting video. If you drove slower on the BLM roads you might have seen the ditch and not bent a leaf spring.
What brand and model of tires have you found perform best on the gravel roads for avoiding flats?
On our car we've been running BF Goodrich kO2s and we've never had a flat (yet). I just put Goodyear Endurance tires in the trailer, load rated E.
@@gonagain Very good performance. In northern Nevada there are some roads that have given people lots of flats and it is recommended to cary a good supply of slime and plugs to fix flats. I will be prospecting there with a metal detector in a few weeks for the first time. I carry a makita battery powered air pump to reinflate just in case.
road too sketchy
What kind of tires do you use and opinion?
Tires on the Yukon are Goodyear KO2's and we've been happy with them. When time to replace, we'll get the same tires.
Don't put a warning sign...it helps filter out stupid people.🤣
Where did they get their water?
Hi Gail, I'm not sure what you're referring to, but Nevada has a large aquifer, so the town of Belmont most likely depended on wells. Those cattle by the crater drink the water where it's cooled off.
@@gonagain I was referring to drinking water for the mining town.
What does third water mean in your parents well?
It means striking water for the third time as you go deeper.
Another great video. I thank you guys for that.
Thanks!
