Tristan, it’s the little things that make me absolutely appreciate this channel. Things like paying for the Annual Pass for the trail, stopping to appreciate cool little landmarks, and giving us history lessons. Keep it up bud!
When you first mentioned the trail name it sounded familiar to me. It’s part of the plan cross the country bike trail that starts in Washington DC and end in Washington state there is a huge gap from the end of the trail you are on to the one in Wyoming
@@SUVRVing Great video, and my compliments as well regarding the little things! I'm an avid adventure/endurance junkie (cycling, running, swimming, hiking etc) and often can't find time - retired/work fulltime, 4 kids (one with medical challenges). When I do have time, it's typically a race or training event for time (missing the little things). We are an outdoors family too, and we operate at a much slower pace when together... I have to say, 3,000' of climbing is no joke, especially on a touring bike setup! Kudos! Looking forward to more biking (and camping) adventures. Take care.

3:35 "This is basically me doing a 100 mile long bike trail off the couch" - says the mountain climber 😊 Great video, of another place I have never been to.
Wow! My home state of South Carolina has turn old railway tracks into walking/hiking trails from the mountains to the sea. I wish more states would consider this form of renewal and reuse for old deserted tracks.
elwood6870,There is a law that abandoned right of way remains as such to available if they are ever needed again,as such they have been turned into hiking walking trails.
Here in Minnesota some counties made the old train right of ways into bike and walking trails. Other less far sighted counties returned the right of ways back to the landowners.
If you join Rails to Trails you will gladly see how many States DO have these trails. I live in Missouri where the longest R2T is, the Katy Trail is 240 miles and runs mostly near the Missouri River. People come from all over the world to ride it!
Tristan, once again I must compliment you on your video skills. The drone shots and the shots where you pass by your camera are excellent! You are truly a talented videographer!
I worked for Burlington Northern on unique jobs riding trains through such beautiful scenery all over your favorite territory. Many routes are inaccessible except on foot. Thanks for awakening memories.
A short but very cool rail to bike trail on the Idaho to Montana border is the Hiawatha Trail. It is short at around 15 miles but goes through a bunch of tunnels and over high trestles. We did it with a pack of Boy Scouts. Most do it one way and take the shuttle back so mostly downhill. Another 31 miles of trails is being worked on to take it to St Regis MT. Pretty fun!
Agreed, the Trail of the Couer d’Alene is 78 miles…paved all the way. It is an exceedingly beautiful trail, running along creeks, river, the Lake Couer d’Alene. There are places to stay along the way.
Thank you for this vid, 7-8 years ago I bought a recumbent bike expressly to ride the Mickalson Trail. Since then the osteoarthritis has kicked in and I will never be able to make this ride. But, luckily you have taken me along on your ride. Appreciate it.
This was a great trip! I thoroughly enjoyed all the beautiful scenery, the history, and the biking adventure. Not so much the gas station sandwich tho, ha ha… I like that you provide fee and other info for the activities you do, it helps when one plans trips. This was such a treat! I moved to the Black Hills from Palm Springs 3 years ago. My “gateway drug” to your channel, was your visit to Historic Hot Springs, where I live. The algorithm did something right, and places your video in my feed. I have been hooked every since. Welcome back to the Sacred Black Hills!
"from the couch" is sometimes the best way to do things! In 2003 I went to Scotland, rented a bike, and spent 10 days riding all over the country, from the couch. By the end of ten days I was in agony but it was one of the best trips I ever did! I love that you are in the Black Hills in this video, one of my all time favorites places in the US. I stop in Custer any time I am road tripping anywhere near there, just to drive the wildlife loop at Custer State Park. :)
Just discovered your channel. I am very impressed. You are easy to listen to and come across as real. I’ve added this trail to my bucket list. Thank you for this great "ride along" on this great bike trail. You need to do the ultimate rail to trail bike trail. It's the KATY Trail State park in Missouri. Wonderful little towns with delightful B&B's and cafes. It's a crushed limestone trail, a little more rolling resistance than on an asphalt trail. But longer than the Mickelson.
wait till you get close to terry peak where it splits!!! it gets a little steep. then there's a section between hill city and custer that is a little steep. 4% for 10 miles ha ha!! tell me its flat again!! one of my favorite sections is from custer to pringle!! lots of rock out croppings !!
Very neat! Definitely going to add it to my list too. The Black Hills are such an underrated area of the country and I fell in love with the area the moment I first visited. I knew immediately you were in Deadwood at the start of the video. Definitely one of my favorite towns in the country. I'm glad you mentioned the E-bikes at the end, because once you mentioned a lot of elevation gain in the beginning, that was the first thing I thought of and figured there would be numerous places to rent them if it is indeed that popular of a trail. I'll probably go that route when I do visit and likely bring a tent and sleeping pad, but definitely rent an E-bike and return to where I started doing it over the course of a couple days. Really neat departure from your usual content and very enjoyable. I like that you're branching out somewhat with your adventures and taking us all along for the "ride." Lookin forward to the next one!
Enjoyed the video. We spend a week in the Black Hills every summer, and have biked that trail the last 2 years. We rented e-bikes and only did a half day though, about 40 miles. When I saw you were using a standard bike, I felt for ya. Those uphill segments are not very steep, but are LONG. Good on you for completing the entire trail, I'm sure your legs were aching much more than you let on in the video. 😁
A refreshing take, riding this 'from the couch'. Inspires confidence that one doesn'tz have to be a super fit and equipped bike tourer to do that. I hope it is not the last bike trail you will show us.
Hi Tristan, if you ever venture further East, the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) canal towpath and Great Allegheny Passage are outstanding rails-to-trails rides. Trails like this is why I'm thinking of getting a pedal assist EV bicycle to add to my gear when traveling with my toy hauler and motorcycle. There is a cool Rail to Trail in eastern central PA and one with tunnels in western Virginia that I would like to experience.
You do the coolest trips Tristan! I’ve been to Deadwood years ago, but I missed this trail! No ebike this time 🤗 I loved seeing the ‘progress’ of Crazyhorse up close - thx for paying for my seat on the helicopter! You took us on a great trip ~ excellent views! Thanks much Tristan!
Hi Tristin, Wonderful trip! :) Ty for taking us along! It was Beautiful! I live on the "Pinellas" Trail here in Fl. It too was once a railroad track converted into a walking, biking trail. We love it~! :)
Thanks so much Tristan for bringing back many pleasant memories of the Summers we spent camped in our son's dooryard above Rapid City. Calamity Jane And Wild Bill are burried in the cemetery at the top of the cliff overlooking the town of Deadwood. Steepest hill we have ever driven up. Helicopter ride was a special treat. 😊
Thank you! I loved re-visiting this trail that I bike-packed 12 years ago. Your campsite is what I was shooting for, but I ran out of energy and daylight. I pitched my tent behind the shelter above Hill City and it was a good choice considering the sand downhill ride the next morning. In Custer, there are beautifully painted full-size bison statues--amazing art. Great memory ❤
I love that area of the country. If you haven't been to the museum at the Crazy Horse monument please do put it on your list. I find it particularly impressive.
I was given a Trek 7300 and 720. I just purchased lots of new components to build a couple bikepacking bikes. Your video is perfect timing. My wife and I enjoy bike riding and really enjoy your channel. The trail looks nice but our trails in West Virginia are very scenic and free to ride on, I think you would enjoy our state. Great video. We were at Seneca Rocks park and they were having a birthday party for Smokey. We had cake.
@@fpartidafpartida actually they have taken the old railroads and made the Rail Trail system. They have around a 3% grade so the riding is flat. Just Google West Virginia Rail Trails and you'll see all of them. The longest currently is the Greenbrier River trail which is 78 miles. Soon you'll be able to ride from Parkersburg WV to Pittsburgh PA. Then you could ride the GAP and C&O canal trail from Pittsburgh PA to Cumberland MD to Washington DC. I know West Virginia gets a bad rep for many things and most are deserved but one thing they have definitely gotten right was the vision of this Rail Trail. I hope you can come visit and enjoy our state.
Tristan, good to see you out…and biking is so great for the soul…back in ‘88 went Vancouver Bc to San Francisco, back to NORTH Conway NH…it changed my life…I learned an hour in a car is a day on a bike…enjoy yourself
Really enjoyed this video. Thank you so much! When you can’t go places because of many different reasons it is great to watch your videos. Well done and informative!
Looks like an awesome bike trai! In 2021 my friends and I did the Virginia creeper trail near Damascus, Virginia and it was great. I highly recommend that trail if you ever make it to that part of the United States. I want to check out this trail that you just did in the Black Hills. I love your videos and watch them all the time I live in Arizona, so I especially like the places you go down here in Arizona, I am a hiker, so watching you videos gives me great new places to check out
What an incredible ride that I didn't know about. I agree with other comments that your video skills are amazing too! I was even out in that area two years ago, would have brought the bike if I had known (I also stayed in a tipi next to Devil's Tower which was awesome). Safe travels!
Loved the bike tour this week. One of my most memorable trips as a young adult was a 250 mile bike trip in Wisconsin. I recently tried to do a 63 mile trip, but crapped out near the end. My advice is to do such trips while you're young.
Love the Black Hills! We have vacationed there from Eastern Minnesota quite a few times. The last being a few years ago when we rented a house in Hill City, our favorite place there. Our house backed up to the Mickelson Trail and I would walk it each morning into town. The Smokey the Bear carving is awesome! Also a store named The Farmer's Daughter is one of our favorites. Thanks for bringing me back here.....
What a great video. Your enthusiasm and honest self shines through. I absolutely love that you did this trip without a $2,000+ bike and crazy expensive gear. Thanks so much for sharing and ride on !
I'm actually getting ready to do the northern tier from Maine to Washington. I'll get to see alot of this so glad you put this up. More motivation 💪 😂❤
Something different and very interesting. I have been to the Black Hills twice and I love them. I really want to go back and spend more time there. The Needles Highway is my favorite. Thanks for the ride.
I can’t wait to do this trail one day, I strongly encourage getting more into cycling/touring for everyone. It’s amazing. Thanks for the informational video
All that I can say Tristin is thank you for bringing us this footage! My second most favorite video! I loved that you took the helicopter ride to Crazy Horse!
This is one of the best videos I've seen on this great trail in a looooong time! We'll done! Congrats on finishing this trail in 2 days, especially since you didn't really train for it! I did this trail a couple of years ago from Edgemont to Deadwood and back, 4 days. Loved this Hall of Fame Rails 2 Trails route!!
I visited the Black Hills last year and stayed in Deadwood. Absolutely LOVED Deadwood! Might have to find an extended range e-bike and return to Deadwood and try this trail!
Well done Tristan. As a long time follower my interest was piqued when I saw that you were bike packing and I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Your videography skills are among the best, always entertaining and informative. Thanks 🙏
Nice video, we've been to the Black Hills many times and ridden the Mickelson trail. You passed our favorite restaurant in Hill City the Alpine Inn for their famous Steak dinner. People will line and wait for an hour to get seated but it's worth it. The most popular hike in the hills area is Harney Peak or as they call it now Black Elk Peak. It's an easy hike but will take several hours, it's very very scenic and provides a fantastic view from the top where they still have a fire tower. Many years ago before I had a drone, I was flying a RC flying wing glider off the top, lift was really good and I was able to land at the top without crashing into a tree but when I turned around, there were several mtn goats right behind me that must've been watching me fly. Were heading back to the hills this September and will do our regular tandem bike ride up Spearfish Canyon which is also gorgeous.
Tristan, this looked like an absolute blast. Beautiful country and thank you for showing this to all of us. As for the gas station sandwich, my wife and I bought sandwiches at a gas station between Lille, France and Paris back in 2017 and they were some of the best things we have ever eaten. I'm sure that you can't say that about one you bought on your ride and I'm sorry for that. Ride in France and you will never have to eat a bad sandwich again. I do hope that someday you can get over there; you and your wife would love it.
Rehabbing an injury and doing a lot of indoor cycling. This was an awesome video to watch while doing so! Hope someday to do something similar to your 2 day adventure
Beautiful trail! I had no idea that there were so many mountains in South Dakota. Cool to see bikepacking on a basic bike with a budget setup; no fancy gear.
I LOVE the blk hills. I have been there many, many, many times. I have been on that mickelson trail. Except i was on foot with a couple of my dogs. The next time i am out there, i want to try renting a bike and start at deadwood. Thank u for a GREAT video. ❤❤
So this looks like your first video when you are cycling. Please do more!! I love your detail and stopping at historic sites. Don’t even need to add music to it as the sound of the gravel under is the best music.
Great overview of bikepacking. Now you're hooked! ;) I've riddden most of "the Mick", Root River Trail in Minnnesota, Sparta-Elroy Trail in Wisconsin, Potowatomie and Hart-Montague Trails in Michigan, Weiser River Trails and Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes in Idaho. Find a bikepacking group near you, get a lighter whip and bring better calories along, nothing will stop you!
Thanks for the video! A couple years ago I was able to ride the first 10 miles from Deadwood but couldn't ride the whole thing at that time so it was nice to see the rest of the trail.
Most enjoyable. You really have a knack for relating as if we're there. I suspect it makes your lone experiences better for you, too. As someone who's traveled to and lived all over the west it enlivens those memories and has me more enthused aboit an upcoming road trip on my own to beautiful places. You do good work to a fine purpose- reminding us of what we should really treasure.
Excellent video of the George S Mickelson Trail. I did my first ever century bicycle trip on that trail. There are plenty of historic landmarks along the trail. Good video.
funny timing.. been doing different legs of this trail for the past 3 days.. much more elevation gains than i thought… maybe im just old😂😂😂 btw the Katy trail in MO is twice as long and way way flatter.. follows the lewis & clark trail for a good stretch along the Missouri river
Thank you for this video. You always make great videos. I should have commented many more times than this - I really enjoy your content and I have a feeling your videos are very good for people's souls.
So that is crazy. I googled it took 14 years to complete Mount Rushmore. 75 years ongoing now for Crazy Horse? What the heck ??? This was a great video, by the way, as always. You do not disappoint. Appreciate you bringing us along.
Your video was great fun to watch. I hope the limestone trail bed was a little more packed than when I was on the trail years ago. I loved the old bike maze. It reminded me of Catstair Canyon of SR 89, SE Utah.
When I was in my mid 20s I did a long bike trip (Seattle to SF) and trained a bit but more riding hard than long distance. First day was a pretty painful 40 miles or so. Last day was a less painful 100mi day. No substitute for just getting in the miles.
Glad you gave the trail a run. One of the best ways to see parts of the Black Hills. Welcome to our neighborhood.👍🏾 Another 9 miles from the park is the Old Ft. Igloo where the Vevos Bunker/Survival Complex is located.
That is beautiful. The surface looks like hard pack, fairly smooth. It should be rideable on an old Schwinn Varsity with 1-1/4 inch tires. Very accessible. Another bike trail you could try is the Little Miami Scenic Trail, along the old Penn Central right of way from Cincinnati to Xenia, near Dayton. A web of rail trails extends from there. It's the southern end of the 325 mile Ohio to Erie trail, which is about 95% complete. The existing separated trail extends north almost to Columbus.
Lived in the Black Hills region in the early ‘70s while stationed at Ellsworth AFB. Can’t explain how awed we were living there as we grew up in big cities. We go back there as often as possible and will be there the first week in September. One of my favorite places to vacation. Still feels like an adventure to me. Thanks for this video. By the way Tristan because of you I will be taking my Dragontail Tenkara rod.
This was a very enjoyable video, Tristan. I loved the helicopter ride. I was a helicopter crew member in the military and worked for two helicopter companies in Maui.
Just a GREAT video! Thank you so much for doing the work and taking the time it takes to put it all together! More, more ":) I cannot drive anymore and am getting around on my bicycle now and Rails to Trails are what I am looking forward to.
Nice Trail! I am in Ohio so I am lucky to have several really nice bike trails not too far away. So far, my favorite multi-day trip has been the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) in Pennsylvania. From Pittsburgh to Concord, Maryland! Best part was from Myersdale, Pa. to Concord....~30 miles downhill from the eastern continental divide, and great views of the Cumberland Gap. I highly recommend that trail! There are so many nice trails now, it would be very hard to pick "the Best".
That was fun to watch. I hope you toss those shades because the UV blocking has likely deteriorated. That plus the fact that shades will open your pupils more than they would be without the shades is a recipe for damage to your eyes.

I’ve been to that area once. Seemed like a beautiful place to live in. Loved the small towns, esp. ones with the old western buildings.
Thanks. Very meaningful to me as I live in Eastern SD and get to the area often. We've spent several vacations based out of Hill City.
This could be a new direction of exploring.there are more rail to trail places being made,be nice to explore more of these
I love that area of the country. If you haven't been to the museum at the Crazy Horse monument please do put it on your list. I find it particularly impressive.
I went there the previous time I visited and enjoyed it 👍
I was given a Trek 7300 and 720.
Any specific recommendations for trails out your way? I imagine they probably have a lot more climb to them?
Rode that trail With my Father when he was in his 60s. My daughter on a push-along. Some of the best memories. Thanks for this and how it remined me.
Looks like an awesome bike trai! In 2021 my friends and I did the Virginia creeper trail near Damascus, Virginia and it was great. I highly recommend that trail if you ever make it to that part of the United States. I want to check out this trail that you just did in the Black Hills. I love your videos and watch them all the time I live in Arizona, so I especially like the places you go down here in Arizona, I am a hiker, so watching you videos gives me great new places to check out
Another entertaining, informative and motivating video!!! I'm glad that I can be a patron. Joan
We have rode out of Custer 20 miles. We will be back to ride more of the trail. Great video. Subscribed.
The Black Hills is such a beautiful area. I’m thinking about doing a trail running race on the Mickelson so this video was very helpful!
I'll have to check out that store the next time I'm there!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video so much! 😁
It's so nice that they provide water here and there 💦
This is one of the best videos I've seen on this great trail in a looooong time! We'll done! Congrats on finishing this trail in 2 days, especially since you didn't really train for it! I did this trail a couple of years ago from Edgemont to Deadwood and back, 4 days. Loved this Hall of Fame Rails 2 Trails route!!
another fun, interesting SUV rv’ing vid….thanks, Tristan, for taking us along and showing us
I visited the Black Hills last year and stayed in Deadwood. Absolutely LOVED Deadwood! Might have to find an extended range e-bike and return to Deadwood and try this trail!
Tristan Confuses say pizza catches up to you on riding rail trail 🫨
Well done Tristan. As a long time follower my interest was piqued when I saw that you were bike packing and I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Your videography skills are among the best, always entertaining and informative. Thanks 🙏
I was a low end bike off the couch guy and rode along the great rivers of Europe. happy trails folks!
Enjoyed the video. Thanks again for sharing the beautiful scenery! ❤😊
Great video, Tristan! Your videos are always so informative & thoughtful. I'm glad you enjoyed the experience. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Really loved this. The bike trip was cool, that’s some decent mileage you did per day as well.
Rehabbing an injury and doing a lot of indoor cycling. This was an awesome video to watch while doing so! Hope someday to do something similar to your 2 day adventure
Totally enjoyed the video. I have been curious about this trail and you did it justice on how you rode and enjoyed it!
Nice video. Been to the Black Hills many times on my motorcycles. You sure picked nice weather to bicycle that trail.
Wonderful fun video, and the music volume was perfect! It doesn't get any better than that. kudos!!
Great video! I live in Rapid City and have ridden the trail many, many times.
Good video.
Great video Tristan, thank you. Good option to add to my list💚
funny timing.. been doing different legs of this trail for the past 3 days.. much more elevation gains than i thought… maybe im just old😂😂😂 btw the Katy trail in MO is twice as long and way way flatter.. follows the lewis & clark trail for a good stretch along the Missouri river
I really enjoyed this video, because I love riding bikes! I enjoyed the history along the trail. Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you for this video. You always make great videos. I should have commented many more times than this - I really enjoy your content and I have a feeling your videos are very good for people's souls.
Love the idea of a ride like this one. My brother and I ride a lot together. Who knows maybe some day!
I like the unassuming nature of your videos. Thanks for putting this out there.
Greetings from Texas..Very nice video..Enjoyed the scenery..Look forward to your next adventure. ✌
Thanks for a very interesting and scenic bike ride. I liked the little history tid-bits along the way.....
Awesome trail. I love the black hills. I'd love to go back. Great sites to see. My favorite is hill city .
Enjoyed the video. I'm so glad you are physically able to complete it.
I Wish i was younger so I could do some of these wonderful things you do. You do such a good job of sharing.
Loved the video I ride different rail trails around New England I hope someday I can ride that one
Thank you. Interesting. Love bike trails, esp. converted canal and rail trails.
I have that same bike. Bought it in 2012 for 400 and something. Great video!
That was fun to watch. I hope you toss those shades because the UV blocking has likely deteriorated. That plus the fact that shades will open your pupils more than they would be without the shades is a recipe for damage to your eyes.
