Hope you don't mind me doing something new with the Pokémon vids, I've something I'm working on in the bg and thought this would be fun to do in the meantime, especially cause I love Gen 1 and I didn't get to talk about it in my last vid. I've you've experience with Gen 1 I'd love to hear what you think! Also ftr the tiers are ordered except for B, made a lil slip at 1:33

Considering a game just came out in the series, have you ever been interested in the tales series? They’re jrpg’s that play like fighting games. The older games in particular have a smash bros like control scheme. Considering you’re videos it’d seem like you’re kinda game.

@@BigYellowSilly they’re really good. The newer ones play more like character action but regardless of the game you can typically do some sick ass combos. Even the mages get to be cool in the series despite having cast times. In one of the games you get hybrid characters that can start a spell mid combo then cancel it to charge it in the background of a combo so you have one man assists.

I feel like Gen 1 discussions almost always default on Psychic type being the top dog, so it's refreshing to hear someone make mention of how utterly dominant Normal type is, especially in OU. Of all the types, I think it has the widest variety of strong, reliable, oftentimes no-drawback STAB moves. And the ubiquity of Hyper Beam is self-evident. I honestly miss Normal being so competitively relevant. Kinda wish with the advent of Fairies, that Normal types could hit them for super effective damage (normal humans caging fairies could explain that type interaction).

It's probably because the only Uber tier Pokémon in gen 1 are both Psychic. Mew and Mewtwo would be just as absurd as any number of typing from raw stats and movepool alone but being Psychic in particular makes Mewtwo even more ridiculous. If you exclude them then yeah Normal has the best Pokémon in the OU tier overall but including them makes Psychic absurd.

A lot of them are hurt by the lack of offensive moves. Dragon got way better once it got to use it's nearly perfect neutral coverage moves. Bug is the saddest one; it's arguably the most powerful offensive type on paper, since bug was also super effective against poison, giving it loads of doubly super effective hits on the grass poison types, as well as other big players like exeggutor, but their strange decision to only sparsely hand out leech life, and give the only two usable bug type moves to beedrill rendered the type nearly nonexistant offensively. It's a big shame; bug later got the moves it desperately needed in gen 2, but also got nerfed offensively in that gen by the inclusion of steel and being changed to no longer hit poison types super effectively.

And its a good demonstration of how pokemon was originally designed: as a single-player RPG, not as a competitive game.
Its supposed to be like an rpg, where you get progressively stronger gear as you move through the game. That's why the bug type pokemon are so ass in gen 1 - they're supposed to be the "iron sword" that you throw away when you get something cooler, and its almost completely irrelevant by the end of the game. Conversely, psychic is so good and has so many good 'mons because its an endgame type that youll need for breaking through the toughest teams.
Ghost type only has one pokemon chain become its just fuckin dead people, and its in the game to show you the horror of team Rocket being evil or whatever. Thats why the elite four who uses ghost types has connections to team rocket.

  • @justintsui2522

Normal types are so wild in Gen 1. One thing worth mentioning is that Normals are immune to Body Slam paralysis, so you can switch them in on Body Slam and not worry about being paralyzed.
Electric type may or may not warrant moving up b/c Zapdos dumpsters teams without the Grounds (though admittedly Chansey checks it okay). Though granted, it may be a Zapdos thing and not an Electric thing. Though, T-wave is also a pretty strong Electric move.
Dragon is a weird one, because it has no offensive moves except Dragon Rage. Again, it's hard to rate since Dragonite is part flying and gets dumpstered by Blizzard (If I remember, I think Cloyster hard counters it?). Though elemental resists, particularly to Electric and Water, are nice and in a vacuum is better defensively than Flying type. Not sure where it'd go or if it's higher than Flying but I just wanted to push back a bit on Dragonite not wanting its Dragon typing, I think Dragonite would be better as a pure Dragon than a Flying type.
Also Scyther has a Hyper Beam Slash Swords Dance set in the lower tiers, which doesn't matter much, but thought it was neat to bring up.
Other than that, looks about right. Pretty nice vid, hope you expand on the Pokemon shit.

And even then it's still a very competent Doubles mon.

Huh, thats a good question: would dragonite be better as normal-flying or normal-dragon?
Either way itll have an ice weakness, but dragon gets rid of the rock weakness and the ground immunity. Is that a good trade?
As a flying type you already weren't getting much out of the ground immunity against rhydon and golem (rock slide go brrrr), but it does give nice switches against something using the move as coverage.
As a dragon type you lose the free switches, but it seems like you dont really get a better matchup against rhydon or golem, as you're still probably never breaking through them with normal type moves.
With that aside, the electric swap is really good and the other elemental resistances are.... fine. Idk they dont seem that impactful.
Its probably better as a dragon-normal, but it really does seem like the important factor is wether youd rather have the earthquake immunity or the electric resistance, and i dont play enough to know which id rather have.

From a combination of Japanese sources and stuff we learned from the leaks, it seems Gamefreak knew how problematic Psychic was extremely early on and Dark/Steel were made from the ground up to stop them offensively/defensively. However, originally Normal wasn't going to be touched at all. It was the Nintendo Cup Tournaments that showed Gamefreak how utterly dangerous Normal Types could be, so they made some late changes like making Dark and Steel weak to Fighting to massively buff that type, further nerfing Psychic to help prop up Fighting more, and changing a bunch of movesets around.
(Fun Fact: Those tournaments are also why Snorlax got buffed. Snorlax is already at a disadvantage in a pick 3 meta focused on offense, but his slow speed meant he couldn't use OHKO moves and everyone else could use them on him as they couldn't hit faster Pokemon, and it also meant he didn't have a good matchup against evasion users. Not to mention no sleep clause or Freeze clause. He actually got a late buff when Japanese Yellow nerfed blizzard, and this was carried into the Western games shortly after. But Chansey benefited from that more and if you WERE bringing a staller you brought her. Smogon's rule changes, no OHKO, no evasion, pick 6, sleep and freeze clause, unintentionally, were basically perfectly designed to buff Snorlax and fix all his weakpoints. He's Number 2 in OU, he's the Top OU mon in Ubers, he's Number 1 in tradebacks, and he's Top 3 in Stadium thanks to Tauros being nerfed albeit other changes hurt him. Tauros meanwhile wasn't really effected by the changes, he's Number 1 in both Nintendo Cup and Smogon OU and in both metas he fell off hard in Gen 2.)

Interesting outlook on S tier. Hard to argue either way but I’m leaning psychic by an edge.
    - 1st because psychic rarely ever gets hit for super effective damage. The closest thing that you can say is “super effective damage” in a competitive scene is a high attacking normal type or ground attack because a lot psychic types are low defense. Even so there are still some psychics that are not so brittle like slowbro or hypno or Eggie. With normal types they also don’t get hit by super much but some pack submission just to deal with chansey.
    - attacking wise normal never hits for super effective whereas psychic will and can competitively.
    - in gen 1 special star is all one stat for defense and offense. It’s hard to find a psychic type that doesn’t have a high special stat so the type basically benefits from this as a whole. On the other side normal rarely ever has a high special stat so it’s missing on that benefit. Plus it’s not guaranteed that a normal type has high attack and defense all in one like psychics do with special combined. The only 2 normal type that really benefits a lot special is snorlax and chansey. Chansey innately which is fine but with snorlax you need amnesia. But that’s not a global trend with the type as much as it is specific Pokemon.
    - move pool wise I think it’s unfair to say that psychics lack options. Yes there are more visible normal attacks being body slam double edge explosion self destruct hyper beam but with more options comes more commitment too. With double edge it’s strong but recoil. With hyper beam you recharge unless you kill. You recharge anyway in stadium. Explosion you die. Body slam is best all around with decent power and utility but much much weaker compared to other options.
With psychic you essentially get what you need all in one with no downside. With normal attacks versatility can be good but with limited move slots 2 spots for one type is also a big investment.
Normals in gen 1 are almost exclusively normal types besides pidgeot and dodrio yet they still get coverage moves like blizzard etc. however psychic types are not always pure psychic types. A lot of competitive pokes are duel types like Eggie, slowbro, star IE etc. and with that comes other coverage options that’s also hit for stab.
IMO it more comes down to utility. Normal is a better defensive type because it has low weaknesses but also more survivability often. Plus it can’t be paralyzed by body slam
However psychic is a better offensive type because it’s best move snowballs in effectiveness, it’s attackers usually all have very high special stat, it hits for super effective damage, it has the chance the run dual types fir more damage. Plus there are more faster psychic types that hit hard than there are fast normal types in the meta.
I think it’s unfair to blanket all 3 OU Pokemon in normal types to all 3 psychic types. It’s not the typing as much as it is the function of the specific mons. Tauros snorlax and chansey all operate completely different of each other completely independent of their typing. One is a sweeper. One is a special tank brittle on Defense. One is a mix tank who has attacking options on both sides of attack and special. That’s not a byproduct of normal typing.
All 3 OU psychic types have common threads. They essentially have no weaknesses because of their typing outside of pin missile. They can control the game with special drops with psychic. They all have high special stat which is basically universal to the type. You can even say they have a common thread in that they have status spread availability seeing that almost every competitive psychic type either has access to thunder wave or some form of sleep spread. They all fully resist their own psychic type which at worst leads to a stall fest. With normal types they hit for neutral. And back to my point because these 3 are independent of one another if you happen to be chansey vs snorlax or Tauros your typing isn’t going to save you.
I mean that makes sense right. Normal typing was intended to be a “neutral typing”. One that doesn’t give you any advantages or disadvantages. The only advantage you have is stab while the only disadvantage you have is one fighting weakness. Basically a trade off in theory (although stab in this game is far better than a fighting weakness that doesn’t apply much- gen 2 it’s more neutral). It just so happens that the best 3 Pokémon in the OU game happen to normal because of other factors.
Psychic typing is not just felt in the OU tier either. It is felt throughout almost every tier. That’s a byproduct of typing again not just 3 Mons in OU with unique qualities that happen to be normal type. The only other legit normal type in tiers under OU is probably dodrio unless I’m missing someone. Even clefable doesn’t do much. Kangaskan isn’t that great. In lower tiers you have kadabra, hypno, mr mime. Mr mine and kadabra control an entire tier. One is a non fully evolved poke.
Outside of the top 3 in OU psychics you still have jnyxx and slowbro. Again that’s a lot of typing reasons.
In gen 1 offense > defense
Great list though 👍🏻... hard to argue with anything else. A and B tier is hard to judge because it often depends on tiers. If you’re talking UU water is so good there. It has to be on at least A tier. Maybe even S.
If I could change anything on your list I’d probably bump water to a tier by itself... then make another tier below that for rock ground and ghost.
water still has good mons in OU while dominating UU. I believe it’s the only type in the game that universally resists blizzard while also being able to use it themselves. That not only allows them to check one of the best types in the game but also use it to check grass. Plus it doesn’t have to run water type moves in favor for more coverage and utility with freeze.
Also there are 3 water types that are ice and water type. So essentially you trading a rock and fighting weakness for a 4 time resist to ice, freeze immunity and stab blizzard. Nice trade. That 4 times resist and immunity is huge.
So while ice is still better because of the one hit KO element water has more utility overall and still can use blizzard just less effectively and with more weaknesses.
Rock and ground is always the hardest to judge foe me. It’s essential for OU but it’s hard to use in UU because of water only really checking a few electric like buzz. Not really checking raichu. Often slow and dual weakness so it requires high end decision making/ maintenance to get a payoff.
So for me this would be my final tier list.
    S- psychic ... then normal
    A+- Ice
    A minus- water.
B+. - ghost rock ground. Basically the immmunity tier for normal and electric types with attacking upside.
    B minus- electric and grass
C- fire, flying, bug, dragon. Can make a case for flying higher due to ground immunity and a few mons with drill peck but it doesn’t outweigh bolt beam weakness.
    D- Fighting and Poison.

Kyurem required Dragon Dance and Freeze-Dry to become as dominant as it is. Weavile and Alolan Ninetales are speedy enough to do whatever they need to. They’re not good because they’re Ice type, they’re good and Ice type.
Weavile specifically has Brick Break for the Steel types and nice STAB for many other things, including frailer Steel types because Steel does not resist Dark. Alolan Ninetales traditionally sets up Aurora Veil and plays Taunt tricks, and can also almost always attack being pretty fast. You also don’t keep your Alolan Ninetales in against Steel types. As for Kyurem, it’s only that good in OU specifically because it has legendary stats. And it still generally needs to be a stalling-like Pokémon with the general SubRoost/Pressure, or just Substitute in general for extra protection. Kyurem is mainly good not because it’s good, but because on OU level it’s versatile and stally. And it still required three generations, Dragon Dance, and Freeze Dry.

On the 1 player end it can be a casual power fantasy, or you can use every Pokémon you come across leveling them up evenly and entirely changing teams if it starts getting too easy. You can shiny hunt, breed perfect IV mon, or whatever in the post game.

@@marcoasturias8520 That's true, but that unfortunately doesn't make it a good type defensively, as most people with knowledge of competitive Pokemon will generally tell you that fire is a bad type from a defensive perspective. I feel like a lot of players make the pitfall of thinking that a type is good or bad defensively based on how many weaknesses and resistances it has, but there's a lot more to it than that. A big part of the reason why fire is considered to be such a bad type defensively is because most fire type Pokemon are built to be offensive powerhouses rather than defensive tanks/walls; this isn't to say that there are no viable defensive fire types (I'm looking at you, Heatran), but it's not a playstyle you see the type used in too much. It also doesn't help that the weaknesses the fire type has are not types that you really want a Pokemon to be weak against for one reason or another, and a LOT of the types it is resistant against are either ones that it's already good against offensively, bad types for the most part, or both, which don't really make the types defensive qualities all that appealing when you look at the whole picture, in my opinion

Bug has better resistances than fighting, with effectively equal offense, since the good fighting move is on Hitmonlee, which is shit.
So a ground and grass resist>anything fighting has in Gen 1.

despite it being a bit overpowered, i miss the old boom. since normal isn't SE against anything and resisted by one and ghosted by another, it was the perfect type to get overpowered moves. now it's like a firecracker because of the defense drop nerf and the addition of steel.

Now that I think of it, ghost type is actually the best type in the game if it was possible to find in isolation. Dark doesn't exist, so its' only weak to itself. And the only ghost type move is lick, which is so bad that it makes pin missile look like a blessing. A pure ghost type would hands down be the best, most busted defensive type in gen 1. If it did get moves, it would be pretty great too. Not hitting psychic (psychic is IMMUNE to ghost in gen 1) sucks, but otherwise hits everything neutrally. Only issue is its' a physical type, and the only ghosts are special oriented.
The best gen 1 pokemon you could engineer would be a physically offensive ghost type with useable special and a signature attacking ghost move. That would be untouchable beyond brute force, and it's immune to normal, one of the best types for dealing brute force damage. Makes me wonder what the game would look like if mewtwo was ghost or ghost psychic, that would make it even more broken.

Great video! The only things I would really change are small things like flying above fire tbh although I do think normal is more meta defining than psychic and deserves an s+ tbh, this is mainly due to the big 3 but also because of proof of its danger with rock and ghost being propelled up in the tiers due to how centralising normal is. Realistically ghost would be a rubbish type without normal being so powerful and rock whilst it would still be good, would probably not be as powerful. Normal versatility is what puts the final nail in the coffin for me though with plenty of different sets snorlax and chansey can actually run that completely changes which matchups they beat.

    • @BigYellowSilly

Wouldn't a Dragon/Normal version of Dragonite be way scarier than Flying/Normal?
Dragon type means it gets all the good resistances with the lessened Ice weakness and Normal STAB Hyper beam nuking everything anyway. Normal/Flying gets same coverage and scary STAB Normal moves but I feel it gets far less from Flying than it would Dragon while still having only a slightly better 2x Ice weakness anyway.
